International Dark Sky Sanctuary

• Swimming, fishing and paddling in the river.

• Devils River State Natural Area has been designated an

International Dark Sky Sanctuary by the International

Dark-Sky Association (IDA), making it the only Dark Sky

Sanctuary in Texas. As the sixth International Dark Sky

Sanctuary to receive the title, Devils River SNA is

recognized as a one of the darkest and most ecologically

fragile sites in the world.

NOTE: It’s a one mile hike from the parking lot to

the river. You’ll need to carry all your gear,

so pack lightly!

Seminole State Park and Historic Site

• Located on US Route 90, east of the

Pecos River High Bridge, 9 miles west of

Comstock in Val Verde County in the U.S.

state of Texas.

• The park is conducive to camping, biking,

bird watching, back packing and archeological

study.

• Cave art and archeological artifacts date back to the earliest human habitation in the area.

Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area

• The Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area is a natural bat habitat near the city of Rock-springs, TX.

• Home to the Mexican free-tailed bat, access to the area is available only through advance res-ervations.

• The Devil's Sinkhole is a vertical natural bat habitat. The 40-by-60-foot opening drops down to re-veal

Kickapoo Caverns State Park

• Located 22 miles North of Brackettville, TX, Kickapoo Cavern is about 1,400 feet long, the result of 4 million years of geologic change.

• Park staff lead cave tours every Saturday. Stuart Bat Cave is slightly shorter than Kickapoo and is the seasonal home to thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats.

• The bats live in the cave from mid March to the end of October. Many bird species also live in the park, and a number of migratory birds nest or fly through the area, as well.

• Birders come here to hunt for hard-to-find species such as gray vireo, varied bunting and Montezuma quail.

Amistad National Recreation Area

• A Borderland Paradise an oasis in the de-sert, Amistad National Recreation Area consists of the US portion of the Internation-al Amistad Reservoir.

• Amistad, whose name comes from the Spanish word meaning friendship, is best known for excellent water-based recreation, camping, hiking, rock art viewing, and its rich cultural history.
