Proposed Rectification
i) Enlarge pile cap size about Y axis from 450 x 900 to 540 x 900 (90mm enlargement) with
additional 1 number of T16 for the main bars. Transverse reinforcements remain as original
design that is T10-100. Refer to drawing under Appendix 2.
ii) Enlarge stump size about Y axis as to re-align centroid of load within stump to be coincide with
the new centroid of pile group. With this kind of approach, the additional moment due to
eccentricity will induced within the stump. Stump will be enlarged from 125 x 450 to 300 x 450
(175mm enlargement).
Design will be based on BS 8110-1 Clause 3.8.4.2 and Chart No. 24 – BS 8110-3
N = 518 kN
N'/bh = 3.84
Additional Moment due to eccentricity, M' = 518 x 0.0875
= 46 kNm
For original of 125 x 450 stump, reinforcement provided = 6T12
Asc = 678mm2
Therefore, 100 Asc / bh = 1.21
Gives, Mori = 61 kNm
Therefore then; Total Moment, MT = 107 kNm
For new size stump, 300 x 450
MT / bh2 = 1.76
Therefore, 100 Asc' / bh = 0.5
Gives area of reinforcement required, Asc' = 675mm2 < Asc provided = 678mm

Proposed Rectification
i) Enlarge pile cap size about Y axis from 450 x 900 to 560 x 900 (110mm enlargement) with
additional 1 number of T16 for the main bars. Transverse reinforcements remain as original
design that is T10-100. Refer to drawing under Appendix 3.
ii) Enlarge stump size about Y axis as to re-align centroid of load within stump to be coincide with
the new centroid of pile group. With this kind of approach, the additional moment due to
eccentricity will induced within the stump. Stump will be enlarged from 125 x 450 to 340 x 450
(215mm enlargement).
Design will be based on BS 8110-1 Clause 3.8.4.2 and Chart No. 24 – BS 8110-3
N = 468 kN
N'/bh = 3.06
Additional Moment due to eccentricity, M' = 468 x 0.1075
= 51 kNm
For original of 125 x 450 stump, reinforcement provided = 6T12
Asc = 678mm2
Therefore, 100 Asc / bh = 1.21
Gives, Mori = 61 kNm
Therefore then; Total Moment, MT = 112 kNm
For new size stump, 340 x 450
MT / bh2 = 1.63
Therefore, 100 Asc' / bh = 0.4
Gives area of reinforcement required, Asc' = 612mm2 < Asc provided = 678mm
