Why do we need a vulnerability database?
• To take advantage of existing models
• To facilitate the modelling process
• To compare similar functions
• To develop new physical vulnerability models
• To share the results with the scientific/engineering community

Fragility Functions
Set of curves that describe the probability of exceedance certain damage states given an intensity measure level.
Continuous Discrete
Intensity measure (IM)• PGA• PGV• PGD
• Sa(T)• Sd(T)• MMI
• IA• CAV• RSD
• Discrete 5% and 95% prediction interval• Continuous Coefficient of variation of the Mean
and the Standard deviation Correlation matrix
UncertaintyMethod of estimation• Analytical• Empirical• Expert Opinion

Vulnerability Functions
Vulnerability functions represent the probabilistic distribution of loss ratio given a certain level of ground motion
• Discrete• Continuous
• Damage factor• Fatality rate per occupant• Nonfatal injury rate per occupant• Fatality rate per exposed population• Direct economic factor
Response variable
• Discrete Mean and Coefficient of variation Lognormal or Beta distributions
• Continuous Mean and Standard deviation + Coefficient of variation of the Mean and the Standard deviation
Uncertainty

Damage-to-loss Functions
Damage-to-loss Functions represent the distribution of loss given a damage state.
They are used to transform fragility functions into
vulnerability functions
• Damage factor• Fatality rate per occupant• Nonfatal injury rate per
occupant• Fatality rate per exposed
population• Direct economic factor
Response variable
• Coefficient of variation• Lognormal or Beta distribution

Damage-to-loss Functions
+Fragility Damage-to-loss = Vulnerability

Capacity Curves
Capacity curves characterise the structural behaviour in terms of physical damage
• Base shear• Base bending moment• Spectral acceleration
Response variable
• Interstorey drift• Global drift• Lateral roof displacement • Chord rotation• Curvature• Spectral displacement
Engineering demand parameter (EDP)
They are used to derive fragility functions using nonlinear static procedures
