GREETINGS from the Executive DirectorIt is a busy and exciting time at Schuylkill Area Community Foundation(SACF). As we move closer to our 50th anniversary celebration in 2017,we have great hopes for the future!

Since 1967, it is YOU - our fund holders, donors, professional advisors,and community partners - who are the greatest measures of our success.It is evident by your dedication to nonprofit organizations, students, and the quality of life in Schuylkill County. We are very grateful for yourdedication to create a stronger and more vibrant community for us all to share.

Community Foundations are designed to build charitable endowment fundsthat benefit the community forever and help create personal legacies. Yourgift and all future earnings from the fund are permanent sources ofcommunity capital, helping to do good work now and into the future.

During this past year:• SACF proudly awarded $460,111 in grants and scholarships;• Four new funds were created, bringing the total number of funds to 158; • Contributions totaled $789,582 from many donors; and• Market value of SACF’s assets reached $17,394,914 as of Dec. 31, 2015.

TYPES OF FUNDSDesignated FundsONGOING SUPPORTDonors may create a fund at the Foundation to benefit aspecific organization or to establish an education award.In the event the specified organization ceases to exist, theFoundation is able to adjust the distribution to insure thefund carries out its original purpose and intent.

Donor Advised FundsINVOLVED ANNUAL GIVINGThrough Donor Advised Funds, a donor can have an activehand in his or her charitable giving by having the right torecommend annually to the Foundation which organizationsshould be supported by the fund. Grants are then made, in thename of the fund, to qualified charities. Since the Foundationadministers the fund, donors are assured of its permanencewell beyond their own ability to advise.

Field of Interest FundsTARGET SPECIFIC ISSUESField of Interest Funds provide donors the opportunity to supportparticular areas of interest that reach many organizations. TheFoundation distributes earnings to the most appropriate programswithin the areas of arts and culture, education, environment,health and wellness, and human services.

Scholarship FundsEDUCATIONAL SUPPORTDonors may create scholarships to support students who aregraduating from a particular school, attending a particularschool, or studying a specific field. Each scholarship is uniqueand is accomplishing the criteria set forth by the donor.

Unrestricted FundsPROACTIVE AND RESPONSIVEUnrestricted Funds provide the Foundation with the greatestflexibility to meet the most pressing and ever changing needsand opportunities within our community.

The Walk In Art Center (WIAC) established an endowment fundon December 21. The fund earnings of the endowment will bedistributed annually to the Walk In Art Center and used at thediscretion of WIAC’s Board of Directors to support the missionof the organization.

The mission of WIAC is to inspire, equip and celebrate thecultural and creative talent of Schuylkill County.

The Walk In Art Center is home to individual creative studiosfor working artists, The WIAC Haven Gallery, The Main Gallery,The Student Gallery, rotating exhibits, activities for all ages, andart education covering a broad spectrum of disciplines.

The Walk In Art Center:• Inspires the community and artists with our working

artist studio concept and the multiple rotating exhibits.• Equips the community and artists through education.• Invites the community to experience, explore and create art

through classes, workshops, art camps and informal discussions.• Celebrates the arts through the various

WALK IN ART CENTERENDOWMENT FUND REAGAN REILLY

HOPE FUND The Reagan Reilly Hope Fund wasestablished as a charitable endowmentfund at the Schuylkill Area CommunityFoundation (SACF) in July 2015 byBrianna Osceles. She wants to make apositive impact in the community byhelping people with drug and alcoholaddiction and by giving hope andinspiration!

Brianna is a native of New Philadelphia.She is now 24 years old, lives in LasVegas, is on the fast track to musicsuccess, and is recording a demo withGranny-winning producer Damon Elliot.The song is about drug addiction andrecovery, a biographical narrative of her life.

The fund earnings of the endowmentwill be distributed annually to qualifiedorganizations or qualified activities orprograms, which support people inSchuylkill County who are in recoveryfor drug or alcohol addiction.

FRED V. KNECHTMEMORIAL FUND

WILLIAM J. JONES, JR.MEMORIAL AWARD Mr. William Jones, a long-time resident of MahanoyCity, passed away on January 14, 2015. As a tributeto his life, his family accepted memorial donations toestablish the William J. Jones, Jr. Memorial Award.

He was an educator for forty-two years serving theSpring Grove and Mahanoy Area School Districts. Heserved in the United States Army and graduated fromEast Stroudsburg Teachers College. During histhirty-eight year tenure at Mahanoy Township, andthen at Mahanoy Area, he taught elementary physicaleducation and high school health education. Mr. Jonescoached football, basketball, track and field, andwrestling. He also served as a bus driver, assistantathletic director and recreation director. As recreationdirector he instituted, supervised and facilitated manyprograms, including boys’ intramural basketball, women’svolleyball, adult swim, summer swim lessons, elementarytrack and field meets, elementary wrestling, rollerskating trips, Teen Canteen activities, playgroundrecreation, and Summer Camp at Lakewood Park.

The William J. Jones, Jr. Memorial Award Fundprovides an award to graduating seniors of MahanoyArea High School who during their high school careerhas exhibited a commitment to education, sportsand/or activities within school or in the community, hasmaintained a G.P.A. of 2.5 or greater during high schoolcareer, and plans to attend on a full time basis aninstitution of higher education or military service.

Fred Knecht, a longtime resident of Schuylkill Haven,passed away on July 9, 2010. He was publisher emeritusof The Call and The Press & Herald weekly newspapers.Born Nov. 6, 1915 in Calhoun, Oklahoma, he was a son ofthe late William K. and Agnes Norbeth Knecht. His wifeof 68 years, the former Eleanor Hand, Muir, preceded himin death in 2008.

Fred was the third generation publisher of his familyin Schuylkill County. His grandfather, William F. Knecht,originated the West Schuylkill Herald, Tower City, in 1898.That paper was acquired by his father, William K. Knecht,in 1922, and then by Fred in 1967.

For the past 118 years, the Knecht family’s publicationshave served the communities of southern and westernSchuylkill County through the following predecessor newspa-pers: The Valley Echo, Tower City; The Tremont News and TheWest Schuylkill Press, Tremont; The Pinegrove Herald, PineGrove; Orwigsburg News, Orwigsburg; and The News-Observer,Tamaqua. The merger of The Call and The Press & Herald shortlyafter Fred’s death in 2010 formed South Schuylkill News.

During his lifetime, he worked with Attorney HarryRubright to write the bequest through his Last Willand Testament. The estate settlement of $359,151.58 isnow pooled for investment purposes with 158 endowmentfunds managed by the Community Foundation. These fundssupport different charitable giving goals as determined bythe wishes of each donor.

The Fred V. Knecht Memorial Fund will continue Fred’sservice to southern and western Schuylkill County communities.The annual earnings from the fund will be granted byhis children to financially support qualified organizations,projects, or programs principally serving one or more of thegeographic areas encompassed by the Blue Mountain SchoolDistrict, Schuylkill Haven Area School District, Pine GroveArea School District, and Williams Valley School District.

Mr. Adams,a resident ofPine Grove,has been apart of the

Community Foundation family since2001. At that time, he established twoendowment funds when his wife,Dolores, “Tootie,” passed away:Dolores D. Adams Memorial ScholarshipFund and Dolores D. Adams Pine GroveCommunity Memorial Fund. Then in2012, Mr. Adams requested adding hisname to both Funds.
