Homes and buildings consume about 40% o the energy produced in the US.1 Construction activity consumes an additional %.2
ogether these account or over hal o our countrys energy demand. As a product leader in the building and construction industry,
James Hardie recognizes its obligation to promote energy ecient building design and sustainable communities. o meet this
obligation, we oer products that reduce the cost o maintaining your home. Additionally, James Hardie works very hard to reduce
the energy needed to make these products and deliver them to our customers.
Te durability and longevity o our products set us apart rom alternative materials. James Hardie products are being
specied on sustainable building projects all over the US.
James Hardie invented ber cement in the 970s and continues to be the global leader in ber cement technology. Signicantinvestment in R&D, manuacturing know-how and product design have brought the most in durable and low maintenance siding
and trim materials to the market, including HardiePlank lap siding, HardieShingle siding, Hardierim boards, HardiePanel
vertical siding, HardieSot panels and HardieWrap.
We pride ourselves on product development, building science and innovative manuacturing, all o which support
sustainable building practices.
James Hardie believes sustainable building and construction practices are important and addresses it in the ollowing ways:

Our latest technology advancement includes products that are engineered or
climate, namely, the HardieZone system. Tis categorizes the United States into
two specic zones based on climate.
HZ5: reezing wet climates, and HZ0: climates with a combination o hot, humid or
high moisture conditions.

ColorPlus echnology not only delivers a high-quality, long-lasting nish, but also provides a number o green advantages over eld
applied paint.
Te proprietary manuacturing process involves baking on several coats o paint in the actory, which eliminates Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOC) on the job site.
ColorPlus echnology is supported by a 5 year limited nish warranty.

Installing ColorPlus products also decreases the need or overall maintenance
compared to eld paint solutions. Having a durable ColorPlus nish results in
a reduced need to re-paint and a reduction o materials that would end up in a
landll. And, ColorPlus echnology is available on our ull range o products so
homeowners benet by having the entire exterior on the same extended paint cycle.

SuStainable raw MaterialS
We use natural and sustainable raw materials such as cement, sand, wood ber and
water. We are committed to delivering the quality product people have come to expect,
while minimizing the impacts the use o these materials have on the environment.
Te Right Mix
We continually assess opportunities to use waste or recycled materials; however, such
materials must show that they have no impact on our products perormance beore
they can be used. Our brand promise is to deliver durability and low maintenance. o
keep that promise we are very selective about the raw materials we use. We continue
to assess additional raw material alternatives; however, durability o the resultingproduct is the determining actor in making raw material decisions.
Local Sourcing
Each James Hardie plant uses local sources o sand and cement. James Hardie was also
the rst ber cement manuacturer to develop North American cellulose ber sources,
reducing or eliminating the need to rely on imported ber.
No Fly Ash
We do not currently use fy ash in our ormulations as we believe it can adversely
impact the durability o ber cement.

Additionally, James Hardies manuacturing operations maintain several sustainability programs ocusing on:
Waste Minimization/Recycling:
We continually test new waste minimization and solid waste recycle technologies in our Zero to Landll program.
Raw materials:
We source about 90% o our raw materials rom local or
regional suppliers.
Reduced uel usage:
Our nationwide network o actories reduces overall
shipping distance and uel consumption.
Reducing VOC emissions:Installers using our ColorPlus prenished siding have
less exposure to paint umes.
Water recycling:
We are developing technologies that enable us to recycle
00% o our process water used in manuacturing.

We recognize that green practices can sometimes limit options or design, material
selection, construction and operation o buildings. Architects, builders and developers
have to make inormed product decisions in order to create quality and high
perormance structures that also deliver on their sustainability obligations. It is possible
or green construction to accommodate a variety o designs rom traditional to modern.
James Hardie products, rom wood-grain lap to smooth panel and trim provide a
range o textures and colors that can satisy several architectural and environmental
aesthetic requirements.James Hardie ofers a ull range o products that meet a wide
variety o design needs.

Energy Efciency with HardieWrap and Foam
According to the US Department o Energy, heating and cooling account or 50% to 70% o the energy used in the average
American home.1 Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes o energy waste, and so homeowners are demanding
more energy ecient homes. James Hardie building products may be combined with HardieWrap weather barrier and rigid oam
insulation panels to design walls that help designers and builders achieve Energy Star certication.
James Hardie siding and trim products:
provide durable, impact-resistant protection and superior aesthetics
are compatible with advanced raming techniques may be installed directly to rigid oam insulation panels2
