ABOUT THE BOBCATS

Quinnipiac is 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in

the MAAC as the Bobcats beat Siena, 12-11.

Four of the Bobcats’ games this season have

been decided by just one goal and they have

also played two overtime contests.

Jame Tomsik leads the team in scoring

with 24 points on 13 goals and a team-high

11 assists. Brian Feldman has a team-best 16

goals and Foster Cuomo and Mike Fletcher

have 14 markers.

Will Vitelli has won 58.6 percent of his

faceoffs and has a team-best 45 ground balls

and Mike Ruane and Riley Palmer have 12

caused turnovers apiece.

Joe Zukaushas has taken over as the starting

goalie and has a .537 save percentage and an

8.77 goals against average.

JESUIT PRIDE

Detroit Mercy is one of just eight Jesuit

schools playing Division I lacrosse.

The others are MAAC-rival Canisius,

Fairfield, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Loyola

(Md.), Marquette and St. Joseph’s.

The Titans have actually played four of the

other seven Jesuit institutions in Canisius (5-4),

Marquette (0-6), Georgetown (0-1) and Saint

Joseph’s (0-1).

BACK AT WISNER STADIUM

The Titans will play their fourth home game

of the season at Wisner Stadium.

Detroit Mercy hosted nationally-ranked

Marquette in February as well as the Midwest

Classic in early March, when the red, white

and blue played Bellarmine and top-10 Ohio

State.

QUICK OVERVIEW

The Titans return over 25 letter-winners from

last season and most of their starting offense

and defense will be back.

The offense returns more than 70.0 percent

of its point scorers, while the defense has all of

its top line long pole and midfielders back.

YOUNG AT HEART

Detroit Mercy (2009) is still one of the

youngest teams in the nation.

Since 2009, Division I lacrosse has also seen

programs added at Jacksonville (2010), Mercer

(2011), High Point (2013), Michigan (2012),

Marquette (2013), Boston (2014), Furman

(2014), Monmouth (2014), Richmond (2014),

NJIT (2015), UMass Lowell (2015), Hampton

(2016) and Cleveland State (2017).

DETROITTITANS.COM @DetroitTitans

GIVE ME THAT

Detroit Mercy has had a history of being

among the leaders in caused turnovers and

the Titans are regaining that form this season.

The Titans currently lead the MAAC and are

tied for eighth in the nation with 8.67 caused

turnovers per game.

The Titan trio of Charlie Hayes (20),

Sam Horton (13) and Alex Akins (10) have

combined for 43 caused turnovers, tied for the

fifth most among a trio of defenders at DI.

The red, white and blue led the nation in

caused turnovers in 2011 (11.63) and 2012

(10.47) and finished tied for second in 2013

(10.00) and third in 2010 (10.47).

MAN DOWN, NOT A PROBLEM

The Titans are second in the MAAC on the

penalty kill at 66.7 percent, allowing just 13

goals in 39 opportunities.

They trail only Manhattan (76.9%) in the

conference.

BALANCED OFFENSE

The Titans have had 14 players score a goal

this season, with eight registering at least five

goals and six with eight markers.

The team lead in goals is currently shared

by three players in Brett Erskine, Brennan

Kamish and Patrick Walsh, who each have 10

apiece.

LOOKING TO FIND A NETMINDER

The Titans have been fortunate to have a

seamless transition in goals in their history,

going from four-years starters in AJ Levell

(2010-2013) to Jason Weber (2014-17).

All three goalies on the team came into the

season having not played a single minute of

college lacrosse.

Weber is a big loss as he ended his

career with a school record 690 saves, 13.02

saves per game and a 10.07 goals against

average,

He is currently finishing up his degree at

Detroit Mercy and will serve as a student

assistant coach as he prepares for an

opportunity to play with Team Canada at the

world lacrosse championship later this year.

NO ROOKIE JITTERS

Redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin showed

no signs of being nervous as he earned the

start in net at No. 6 Notre Dame.

He finished with 11 saves - five in the third

period alone - and picked up three ground

balls in the tough 10-7 setback.

He picked up his first win at Mercer allowing

just seven goals - one in the second half - and

making 10 saves in the game.

Shamblin made 28 saves at the Midwest

Classic with 14 apiece against Bellarmine and

No. 4/6 Ohio State and had nine against Marist

in the MAAC opener and 11 at Monmouth in an

overtime victory.

On the year, his 95 saves is second in the

MAAC, while he also stands third in goals

against average (9.46), fifth in save percentage

(.528) and saves per game (10.56).

VANTASTIC

Sophomore transfer Matthew Vangalen had

a great start to his Titan career challenging the

school record for points in a single season last

year, and his 2018 is shaping up to be another

banner year.

He already leads the team with 18 points

on a team-best 10 assists and is tied for fourth

with eight goals.

Vangalen tallied a team-high five points on

two goals and three assists at Notre Dame and

also caused a pair of turnovers. He added two

goals at Jacksonville, notched a goal with three

assists versus No. 4/6 Ohio State and had two

goals with a helper against Marist.

He was selected All-MAAC Second Team in

2017 after posting 47 points – third in school

history – 26 goals – seventh in school history –

and 21 assists – tied for second in Titan record

books.

He now ranks eighth in school history with

31 assists, tied for 10th with 65 points and is

11th with 34 goals.

HAYES TOP 10 IN THE NATION

IN CAUSED TURNOVERS

Senior captain and short stick midfielder

Charlie Hayes - a Preseason All-MAAC

Selection - has started the season playing like

an All-American as he already has

20 caused turnovers and 40 ground balls -

both team highs - to go with career highs of six

goals, two assists and eight points.

In fact, he is approaching his career highs of

21 caused turnovers and 42 ground balls from

last season and is already fifth in school history

with 56 caused turnovers and eighth picking

up 104 ground balls.

He leads the MAAC and is ninth in the nation

with 2.22 caused turnovers per game, while his

4.44 ground balls per game is second in the

league - behind Quinnipiac faceoff specialist

Will Vitelli’s 5.00 - and tied for 38th in DI.

He posted three ground balls, a caused

turnover and a goal at Notre Dame, while

playing some great defense.

He had a goal and an assist at Mercer, four

ground balls and four caused turnovers at

Jacksonville and two caused turnovers with

four GB’s versus Marquette.

In the last few weeks, he posted a career-

best six caused turnovers with seven ground

balls against Bellarmine and scooped up a

career-high nine ground balls against Marist.

ERSKINE ARRIVES

Freshman Brett Erskine made a name for

himself and the nation took notice of his play.

At Mercer, he recorded his first collegiate

points on two goals and an assist and all three

came in dramatic fashion, earning him the

MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week.

His assist came on the Titans’ sixth goal in

a comeback victory at Mercer, while his first

goal tied the game at 7-7 with 19 seconds left.

Erskine’s final marker was the game-winner

in overtime.

He posted two goals in the MAAC opener

against Marist and has now tallied two goals in

four games this season and is leading the team

with nine goals and tied for second with 12

points.

He has also attempted just 21 shots and 20

have been on goal for a .952 shots on goal

percentage.

KAMISH CONNECTION

Freshman Brennan Kamish has had a strong

start to his collegiate career scoring a goal in

six of the nine games on the season and is tied

for first on the squad with 10 goals.

He tallied his first career marker at #6/6

Notre Dame. He also posted two at Mercer and

against Bellarmine and #4/6 Ohio State.

His last time out at Monmouth, he tied the

game at 8-8 with six seconds left and then won

it in overtime just 46 seconds into the extra

period.

DÉJÀ VU?

Twice this season, a Titan freshman has tied

the game late and then won it in overtime.

At Mercer, Brett Erskine tied the game

with 19 seconds left and then had the game-

winning goal, while at Monmouth, Brennan

Kamish tied the contest with six seconds

remaining and then had the winning strike in

overtime.

CANADIAN POWER

The Titans top two point scorers are both

Canadian in junior Matthew Vangalen (18) and

freshman Brett Erskine (15).

When you add in junior Patrick Walsh’s 10

goals, senior Lucas Ducharme’s seven goals

and three assists and senior Marcus Butter’

one marker, Canadians have accounted for 35

goals, 18 assists and 53 points.

As a team, the Titans have 77 goals, 44 assists

and 121 points.

LEAVE IT TO AKINS

Sophomore defender Alex Akins had a

strong start to his second season posting a pair

of caused turnovers and limiting Notre Dame

attackers in the season opener.

He has now caused a turnover in six of the

nine games on the season and is third on the

squad with 10 caused turnovers.

Akins recorded a career-high three caused

turnovers and seven ground balls at Mercer.

As a freshman, he earned All-MAAC Second

Team and All-Rookie Team recognition after

playing in all 16 games with 12 starts and was

third on the team with 12 caused turnovers

while picking up 15 ground balls.

WALSH WEARING A HAT

Junior Patrick Walsh recorded his first career

hat trick scoring three goals against Marist in

the MAAC opener.

Walsh now has a career-high 10 goals and is

just five points shy of his career best 15 points

(8g, 7a) from last season.

MENDELL NOT A ROOKIE ANYMORE

Sophomore Seth Mendell was named to the

MAAC All-Rookie Team after tying for second

on the team with 26 points and eight assists

and tied for third scoring 18 goals

Mendell led all MAAC freshmen in goals and

was second in points

He recorded his first collegiate hat trick in

a big way as he exploded for six goals versus

Bellarmine, tied for first in the MAAC and the

second most in school history, and it was also

tied for the fourth most goals by anyone in

Division I on the season

This season, Mendell has eight goals and

three assists for 11 points, and has posted two

goals three times in the last five games against

Bellarmine, Air Force and Marist.

LOOKING FOR MORE

Senior Alec Gilhooly will look for another

career season as he set career highs in almost

every statistical category as a junior finishing

second on the team with 19 goals, tied for

second with 26 points and tied for third

handing out seven assists.

He also tied for the team and conference

lead with seven man-up goals, which was also

tied for sixth in the nation.

In the MAAC semifinals against eventual

conference champion Monmouth, he recorded

a career-high four goals.

He has found the back of the net at least

once in five of the last six games, including

three against Bellarmine for his third hat trick.

In his career, he has 40 goals and 18 assists

for 58 points.

BIRNEY BOMBS

Senior Sean Birney is back at midfield after

finishing fifth on the team with a career-high

15 goals and 21 points last season.

He also handed out six assists, sixth on the

squad, and tied for the team and conference

lead with seven man-up goals, which was also

tied for sixth in the nation.

In his career, he has 33 goals and 57 points

and is eighth in school history with eight man-

up goals.

ALEX THE GREAT

Sophomore Alex Jarzembowski is back at

the faceoff-X position winning seven faceoffs

at #6/6 Notre Dame and eight at Mercer.

Against Marist, he tied a school record

winning 16-of-25 and that was after winning

13-of-18 versus Air Force. He was also 11-of-20

at Monmouth with five GB’s.

As a rookie, he saw action in 14 games and

led the team in faceoff winning percentage at

57.4 percent (74-of-129), a new school record

and second in the MAAC.

WHEN IT IS A COMEBACK,

COUNT BUTTERS IN

Senior midfielder Marcus Butters has two

career goals and both have been when the

Titans have needed it the most - during a

comeback.

At Siena in 2015, Detroit Mercy was down 13-

10 entering the fourth when his first collegiate

marker sparked a rally as the Titans won, 14-

13.

At Mercer earlier this season, the Titans

were down 7-3 in the fourth and he scored

another goal as Detroit Mercy came back to

win, 8-7 in overtime.

DON’T MESS WITH TEX

Senior Will Kane had two ground balls in

the season opener at Notre Dame and tied his

career high with three caused turnovers at

Jacksonville.

Last week at Monmouth, he had two caused

turnovers and two ground balls.

He played in all 16 games with 15 starts

last season and was second on the Team with

a career-high 17 caused turnovers and sixth

racking up a career-best 22 ground balls.

He has played in 45 career games and has

tallied 31 caused turnovers - eighth in school

history - and 59 ground balls.

PAT IN THE TOP 10

Senior LSM Pat Masterson had registered

a caused turnover in each of the first nine

games as well as three ground balls at #6/6

Notre Dame, five versus #4/6 Ohio State and a

season-high six against Air Force.

He is now top 10 in school history in both

categories as he is seventh with 34 caused

turnovers and ninth with 97 GB’s.

BLOODLINES

The program might only be just 10 years old,

but the Titans have already developed some

family ties.

Senior Sean Birney is the younger brother

of former MAAC Championship Most

Outstanding Player Mike Birney (2012-15) and

Detroit Mercy women’s lacrosse player Kylie,

a four-year letter winner who was the Atlantic

Sun Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the

Year as a junior and senior.

Also on the team is senior Pat Masterson,

the younger brother of 2014 graduate and

one of the top scorers in school history

Tom Masterson, a member of the 2013

championship team.

ACADEMIC TITANS

The University of Detroit Mercy men’s

lacrosse team added another piece to its

academic resume as 27 student-athletes

were named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic

Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll.

To be eligible for the MAAC Academic

Honor Roll, a student-athlete must hold a

cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or

higher on a 4.0 scale. The Honor Roll is open

to both full-time and associate members in

the MAAC. All 24 sports that the conference

sponsors are represented.

Back in May, Detroit Mercy tied for the

MAAC high with 19 student-athletes on the

All-Academic Team, the sixth-straight year

the Titans have led or tied for the most in the

conference.

BORN AND RAISED IN MICHIGAN

While the Titans do recruit nationally -

witnessed by eight states plus Canada on their

47-man roster - there is no arguing that Detroit

Mercy loves to keep players in their home

state as 23 of its 45 players (51.1%) hail from

the Great Lakes State.

The next on the list is Canada with seven (6),

Minnesota (3), Indiana (3), Ohio (3), Maryland

(2) New York (2), Texas (2) and Oregon (1).

TOUGH SCHEDULE

Eight games in the state of Michigan, five

match-ups with teams that made the NCAA

Tournament a year ago and hosting the

Midwest Lacrosse Classic are all on the docket

for Detroit Mercy this season.

The five NCAA Tournament teams that the

Titans will battle are Air Force, Marquette,

Monmouth, Notre Dame and Ohio State and

three of those games will be in the Metro

Detroit area (Air Force, Marquette, Ohio State).

TITANS IN THE PROS

Detroit Mercy has had a few Titans go on to

pro careers and three of them won a MLL title

last season.

Two Titans who helped Detroit Mercy

capture a MAAC title were drafted by the MLL

last year in Mike Birney and Paul Bitetti.

Birney was selected in the 11th round by the

Ohio Machine, while Bitetti was tabbed in the

13th round by the Atlanta Blaze.

They were the fourth and fifth players,

respectively, to be drafted professionally

joining Shayne Adams (second round, 21st

overall, in 2015 by NLL’s Vancouver Stealth),

Joel Matthews (fourth round, 31st overall, in

2012 by the NLL’s Buffalo Bandits) and Jordan

Houtby (fourth round, 29th overall, in 2013 by

the NLL’s Minnesota Swarm).

Meanwhile, another two Titans that were part

of the 2013 MAAC Championship in Brandon

Davenport an Chris Shevins were a part of the

Ohio Machine practice team.

Birney, Davenport and Shevins also won the

Steinfeld Trophy with the Ohio Machine last

season.

TITAN CAREER HAT TRICKS

HEAD COACHCHRIS KOLON

4th SEASONOne of the best defensive minds in the game, Chris Kolon is in his 10th season on the sidelines – and fourth as a head coach - for Detroit Mercy in 2018. On June 2, 2014, he was tabbed the program’s interim head coach and then was named the permanent head coach on July 14.

During his time with Detroit Mercy, Coach Kolon has overseen all aspects of the Titans’ defense and served as the team’s recruiting coordinator. He has tutored four players that have gone on to get drafted in the MLL and NLL and his teams have always been at the top of the MAAC in academic accolades.

In 2017, he led the Titans back to the MAAC Championship semifinals after the program was picked to miss the conference tournament in the preseason polls.

In 2016, men’s lacrosse team had a banner year in the classroom as 29 student-athletes earned a spot on the MAAC Academic Honor Roll - tops in the league - while Detroit Mercy led the MAAC for the fifth-straight year with 20 members on the All-Academic Team. In addition, Paul Bitetti was selected a USILA Scholar All-American, just the second player in program history to earn that honor.

In the fall of 2016, former standouts Mike Birney and Paul Bitetti were both chosen in Major League Lacrosse’s Supplemental Draft by the Ohio Machine and Atlanta Blaze, respectively.

In his first season as the head coach of a young Detroit Mercy squad that featured 10 seniors and 16 upperclassmen on its 46-man roster, he guided the Titans to their first-ever winning record with a program best eight wins at 8-6 in 2015. Detroit Mercy also tied a school record with four conference victories and recorded wins over Ohio State, Bellarmine and Robert Morris for the first time in the program’s seven years. Detroit Mercy received votes in the USILA Coach’s Poll for the first time during the regular season.

The Titans were also 6-0 at home and advanced to the MAAC Championship semifinals for the fifth-straight year. He also saw sophomore goalie Jason Weber lead the nation in saves per game for the second-straight season (14.43) as well as finishing third in the nation and second in the MAAC with a .589 save percentage.

As a team in 2015, Detroit Mercy was number one in saves per game (15.14), marking the fifth time in the program’s seven-year history that it has led the country in a stat, as well as 11th in clearing percentage (.883) and 13th in man-up offense (.451). In the MAAC, the Titans were number one in clearing percentage and caused turnovers (7.29), second in man-up offense, scoring offense (9.93), shot percentage (.286) and scoring margin (-0.29), while placing third in points per game (15.14) and scoring defense (10.21).

Off the field, 35 Titans earned a place on the Detroit Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, while Detroit Mercy led the MAAC with 16 All-Academic selections.

Kolon’s defensive mind and aggressiveness can be seen right among the nation’s leaders as Detroit Mercy led the nation in caused turnovers per game in 2012 (10.47) and 2011 (11.63), while finishing tied for second in 2013 (10.0) and third in 2010 (10.47).

He helped tutor two of the top caused turnover leaders in NCAA history as three-time MAAC LSM of the Year Jordan Houtby finished his career number one in the NCAA record book with 158, while 2013 graduate and All-MAAC honoree defenseman Jamie Hebden was second at 123.

In 2014, Kolon saw freshman Jason Weber earn the MAAC’s Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year as he topped the nation with a pair of school records, finishing with 16.27 saves per game and a .642 save percentage. The netminder made 179 total saves – tying a Detroit Mercy record – and was 16th in the country and first in the MAAC with a 9.07 goals against average.

As a team in 2014, Detroit Mercy was also tops in the NCAA in saves per game (16.07), while ending 19th in caused turnovers per game (7.79) and 20th in man-down defense (.673). Sophomore Paul Bitetti was the latest defenseman to shine in Coach Kolon’s scheme as he was 12th in DI and led the conference with 1.85 caused turnovers per game.

In MAAC play, Detroit Mercy was the top man-down unit at 67.3%, while ranking second in the league in caused turnovers. The defense also set a school record in allowing just 9.61 goals per game – second in the MAAC – and a number that has dramatically decreased in the Titans’ first six seasons going from 16.00 in 2009 and 12.00 in 2010 to under 10 in 2013 and 2014.

In 2013, the Titan defense gave up just 9.93 goals per game, second in the MAAC and 25th in the nation. His defense held the top scoring team in the MAAC, Marist, to just six goals in the conference semifinals and then allowed just nine goals to No. 2 Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament – the least amount of goals ever allowed by a MAAC squad in NCAA Tournament history.

#DetroitsCollegeTeam Game #10 Quinnipiac

DETROITTITANS.COM @DetroitTitans

The Titan defense was also second in the MAAC and 14th in the nation in man-down defense (.708). Hebden finished second (2.53) and Houtby sixth (2.33) in caused turnovers per game, while goalie A.J. Levell was 15th in saves per game (11.83) and 17th in save percentage (.557). Houtby was tabbed Co-MAAC LSM of the Year, while Hebden was First Team All-MAAC on defense and Levell was a Second Team selection inbetween the pipes. In 2012, Detroit Mercy was also top 10 in saves per game (11.73), 12th in ground balls (32.27) and 13th in man-down defense (.738), and that was after finishing 15th in ground balls (32.94) in 2011.

Three of his defensive players ranked in the top 50 in caused turnovers in 2011 in Houtby (2nd - 3.25), Hebden (5th - 2.5) and Jason McDonald (48th - 1.31). Houtby and Hebden would come back to post another strong junior campaign in 2012 as Houtby was again second tallying 2.53 per game, while Hebden was 35th

at 1.2. Houtby has also earned Second Team All-Conference, while Hebden was a second team pick as a sophomore and junior.

In 2010 in just the Titans second season as a varsity program, Detroit Mercy was third in the nation in caused turnovers at 10.47 per game. That number trailed only Maryland (11.38) and Syracuse (10.67). A pair of rookie long sticks were among the nation’s best as well as Houtby was sixth in the country in caused turnovers at 2.13 turnovers per game, a number that also led the MAAC. Hebden’s name could be seen just under Houtby’s as he was 25th in the NCAA with 1.6 caused turnovers per game.

No stranger to lacrosse in the Metro Detroit area, Kolon has long been dedicated to the growth of lacrosse in Michigan. He began his coaching career with former Titan head coach Matt Holtz at Michigan State (2000-2001). Kolon then spent the next few years as a high school coach at Detroit Country Day (2003-2004) and Birmingham Seaholm (2006-2007), serving as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at all three stops, while maintaining a collegiate lacrosse officiating schedule.

Kolon, a 1999 Rutgers University graduate, lettered for four years as a defenseman for the Scarlet Knights. He is a local graduate of Seaholm, where he quickly picked up the game as a sophomore and parlayed his love of the game into a collegiate scholarship, earning him the distinction of the first player from Seaholm history to play and earn a scholarship at the Division I level.

Kolon earned his MBA from Detroit Mercy in 2009. He is also on the Advisory Board of All-American Lacrosse Leagues.

Kolon, and his wife Elizabeth, are the proud parents of eight-year old twins, John and Thomas.
