NCJW “Back to School” Event

National Council of Jewish Women|MI held their 7th annual Back 2 School in Detroit. Over 700 Detroit children were invited to shop for new coats, gloves, hats, shoes, socks, shirts, pants, underwear and receive a backpack filled with school supplies and personal care items. Everything for the children was either newly purchased or donations of new items. Thanks to the generosity of many – donations and grants – the children enjoyed a day of shopping and fun! For the past several years, one of our generous donors has been U of D/Mercy’s Dental School, providing toothbrushes and toothpaste that put a smile on their faces!

*SPECIAL APPRECIATION TO

HONORARY MEMBER DEAN MERT AKSU,

DEAN U OF D DENTAL SCHOOL, FOR DONATING 400

TOOTHBRUSHES AND TOOTHPASTE.*

Regent’s MessageAs the school year begins President Allen Hwang of AN and Co-Presidents Tasha Deb and Lauren Paolini of Chi are excited to begin their year. Our students are the lifeblood of our Detroit Alumni Chapter and I anticipate terrific programming to continue growth and maturation toward graduation of our student members.

The Chi Chapter's annual Student/Faculty/Alumni dinner including new member initiation is planned for Oct 30 at Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor. Alpha Nu's Initiation Dinner event will be held Nov 1st at Andiamo's in Detroit at the Renaissance Center.

Other student programming is in the works. Last Spring the AN Chapter conducted its annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic where 28 UDM students, as well as 8 faculty, treated 236 patients, performed 414 dental procedures which included restorations, extractions and prophys. Oral health instruction was provided at the dental clinic and a local middle school. Their next trip will be in the spring of 2020.

Recently, the AN Chapter had a rush event at Hockeytown in Detroit with 100 students attending and will be having an event at the Yates Cider Mill. You will be informed of new events. How wonderful it would be to have our alumni chapter members in attendance at our student functions. Working (and playing) together is beneficial to all of us as we are one big happy AO family.

I look forward to seeing our students in attendance at our Sunday morning CE seminars and our Detroit Alumni Chapter's Paid-up Dinner on Wed Nov 13th.

AO International conducted a strategic planning seminar, Sept 19-21,in Boca Raton, FL. You'll be apprised of the results and the future course of AO.

The Hebrew year of 5780 is here. Fran & I wish everyone a sweet New Year filled with health, love, joy and peace; peace for all of us and peace in Israel.

DR SUSAN H. CARRON GRANT FUND TO BENEFIT CHILDREN AND VETERANS

Dear Fellow Fraters,

As you may know, I have been in the MDA Foundation from its inaugural year of 1998. I began as a board member, then became the Vice President and recently ended my 3.5 years tenure as President and last year was named President Emeritus. I’m proud of the work I and the MDA Foundation have accomplished and continue to do. Today, I want to tell you about a wonderful opportunity to help me continue the growth of the organization.

As I was ending my tenure as MDA Foundation President in 2018, Dr. Norm Palm and his wife Jan Palm honored me with a donation to start the Dr. Susan H. Carron Grant Fund to benefit Children and Veterans. This was a wonderful and unexpected surprise!

In order to begin making grants to organizations serving children and veterans in perpetuity, we must grow the grant fund. As a start, my husband Howard and I have agreed to match gifts up to $10,000. I’ll be honest; this is hard for me to do because I’m more comfortable working behind the scenes.

Please consider making a gift to the MDA Foundation designated to my grant fund today. It is easy to do. Go online at www.michigandental.org/foundation and click on the giving button, or you can call the MDA Foundation at 517-346-9458, ask for Foundation staff and they will be happy to take your gift over the phone. I will be so grateful and humbled by your gift, but most importantly, the children and veterans we serve with my grant fund will be happier, healthier and forever grateful.

Gratefully and Fraternally yours, Dr. Sue Carron - Past President of Detroit Alumni Chapter and active member of AO Detroit Council and Trustee, President Emeritus, MDA Foundation
