What is Fatigue?

Lack of energy, physical exertion, physical discomfort, lack of motivation, and sleepiness.

◦ Mental fatigue: dificulties with concentration, attention, visual perception, andsomnolence.

◦ Physical fatigue: loss of muscle strength, speed or agility, thus limiting the performance of physical tasks.

Categories of Fatigue?

◦ Acute Fatigue: which occurs normally between a pair of major sleep periods.

◦ Cumulative fatigue: which accumulates over period of days or weeks to the insufficient recovery from successive periods of acute fatigue.

◦ Chronic fatigue: Psychoneurotic syndrome characterized by difficulty in committing oneself to an aggressive course of action.

Fatigue DetectionThere are three different ways to detect and monitor mental fatigue:

◦ Physiological Measurements:

◦ Human Performance:

◦ Subjective Measures:

Physiological MeasurementsA way of measuring mental fatigue is to measure the physiologies responses to behaviours of mental fatigue, response is usually measured by the energy expended in perform a set of tasks.

Performance

11

Performance decrement due to fatigue may be considered as a function which compares the time on task and the total quantity and/or quality of work performed in a given unit of time.

Factors of influence:Task difficulty;

Task workload;

Motivation;

Type of Task;

Others FactorsAge - Defines the mental age of the individual. It is important to understand the

expected cognitive abilities of the individual, which may have a tendency to degrade

with old age.

Gender - The mental states are different between men and women.

Professional occupation - Many occupations are intrinsically more tiresome or

exhausting than others.

Consumption of alcohol and drugs - The use of certain substances for short or

prolonged periods may cause dependencies and other effects that lead to a state

of mental fatigue.

Conclusions

There are three different ways to detect fatigue.

Current systems do not consider the environment information.

User profile is often not taken into account.

Objective measures typically used for vehicle drivers.
