DEAR COLLECTORSIt’s said that those who never fail, never learn

By no stretch of the imagination could Sir John Franklin’s Arctic expedition be termed a success – the entire crew perished without finding the passage they sought between Europe and Asia. But consider all that we’ve learned in the more than a century and a half we’ve spent searching for evidence of what really happened.

In 1989, we issued a stamp celebrating the discovery of some of Franklin’s relics. The stamp set featured in this issue of Details will be released just before the first anniversary of the momentous discovery of Franklin’s ship, the HMS Erebus, by Parks Canada and its partners.

Over the years, we have issued other stamps illustrating the ways in which Canadians have been shaped by tragedy. With the sinking of the RMS Titanic,

Halifax showed the world what it was made of in responding tirelessly to the dangerous recovery effort. Just a few years later, on the opposite side of the country, the Komagata Maru incident helped spur Canada’s move away from the discriminatory immigration policies of the 19th century. With the Franklin expedition, we celebrate the ambition of Sir John and his crew and the tenacity of those who refused to allow their story to be lost in the depths of time.

The Dinosaur Provincial Park U.S. rate commemorative, issued July 3, features an incorrect image. The stamp and related products have been withdrawn from sale. A new version of the stamp, OFDC, postcard and souvenir sheet will be available in the near future.

The first paragraph of our UNESCO story should have read: Our multi-year journey through the wonders of Canada’s UNESCO World Heritage sites continues in this second issue of three U.S. and two international rate stamps. The series of U.S. and international stamps, along with a separate issue of domestic definitives is in response to requests from Canadians over the years for stamps depicting the natural and cultural beauty of the country.

When Sir John Franklin and his expedition entered Arctic waters in 1845, he and 128 sailors hoped to find the last link between Europe and Asia: the Northwest Passage. In command of the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror – two state-of-the-art ships equipped with reinforced hulls, auxiliary steam engines and supplies for three years – Franklin had every reason to believe his mission would end in triumph. By the fall of 1846, however, both ships were trapped in ice. By 1848, conditions had grown dire, and the ships were abandoned. No one survived.

The f ir s t search for Frankl in and his men was launched later that same year. More than

30 government and private expeditions followed in just a dozen years, each failing to find the ill-fated crew. Gradually, small artifacts, graves and Inuit testimony shed partial light on the final, desperate days of Franklin’s expedition.

In early September 2014, Parks Canada and its partners discovered the remarkably well-preserved remains of the Erebus – Franklin’s flagship – in just 11 metres of water. The crucial discovery brought the world a step closer to solving one of the greatest mysteries of the Canadian Arctic.

These stamps not only commemorate Franklin’s bold journey and the tragic loss of his life and his

crew, but also celebrate the monumental discovery of the Erebus.

Stamp designer Roy White, of Subplot Design in Vancouver, focused the se-tenant pair of domestic stamps on the story that has sparked the imagination of Canadians for generations.

“We wanted to capture the despair of being trapped in such an unforgiving landscape, so the ship and the map both appear as if they have been carved out of ice on the stamp,” explains White.

“The map, written in Inuktut, also pays tribute to the continuation of Franklin’s story through Inuit stories and culture.”

White mixed a traditional-looking drawing with a modern image to make the international rate stamp a fitting tribute to the discovery of the Erebus. A 19th-century style diagram of the ship’s deck plan – matched with incredible, high-tech sonar images from Parks Canada – illustrates the good condition of the long-submerged ship.

“This project gave us the opportunity to really dive into Franklin’s story,” says White. “Even more amazing than the discovery itself is the fact that the remarkable condition of the Erebus makes it, essentially, an underwater museum.”

These stamps reveal the depth of a story that has developed for more than 150 years.Roy White
