    °F.C = FOUNDATION CONDITION

    1. All concrete shall be Class 30/19 MPa unless otherwise indicated.

    2. Pitching on inlet side to be to design high flood level (100mm min.)

    3. Design mass of fill = 2000 kg/m³

    4. Load factor for proof load of SABS 986 = 1.5

    5. Reinforcement shall comply with the requirements of SABS 920 Type C ,Class 2, Grade 1

    6. Concrete cover to steel = 40mm min.

    7. High tensile reinforcement (Y)

    - Working stress = 207.5 MPa

    - Characteristic strength of steel (fy) = 450 MPa

    - Characteristics strength of concrete (fcu) = 30 MPa

    8. Precast concrete cukverts shall comply with the requirements of SABS 986 and additional

    test loading as specified.

    9. Dimensions and reinforcement details for in-situ base slab are valid only if:

    - The height of fill above the culvert is less or equal to the ones mentioned on the above tables.

    - The type of material under the base slab is not a rock.

    10. Dimensions in the above tables may not conform to all marketed units, it may become

    necessary to revise tabulated dimensions.

    11. Permissible fill heights :

    - The relationship between the proposed S-load culvert Classes defined in SABS 986 and

    the corresponding maximum permissible fill heights to meet the TMH 7 requirements was

    calculated and is given in the table above.

    If culverts are to be placed under higher fills than those given in this table then a

    higher S -load Class must be specified.

    The manufacturer may be consulted in this regard.

    12. Definitions:

    - Yielding foundation conditions occur when the founding material and the fill material are

    expected to settle at equal rates (compressible material).

    The loading is calculated in accordance with TMH 7 Part 2, Clause 2.3.3.2(2).

    - Unyielding foundation conditions occur when the founding material is incompressible

    (softrock or other harder material). The loading is calculated in accordance with

    TMH 7 Part 2, Clause 2.3.3.3(3) and (4).

    - Trench condition occurs when culverts are laid in a narrow excavation and backfilled to G.L.

    - Embankment (untrenched) condition occurs when culverts are laid at G.L. and

    backfilled to final formation level.

    13. The combinations of foundation and installation conditions used in TMH 7 are defined as :

    Condition 1 : Culverts in trenches on unyielding foundation with no projection.

    Condition 2 : Culverts untrenched on yielding foundation.

    Condition 3 : Culverts untrenched on yielding foundation for h>1.7 X Sw.

    Condition 4 : Culverts untrenched on yielding foundation for h
