Dear Delegates of the 2016 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference, Welcome to Johannesburg, or Joburg or Jozi as it affectionately known. Joburg is a world class African city, an economic hub of Southern Africa, that is vibrant, diverse and has vast business and leisure opportunities that you will surely enjoy. This year’s conference brings together our area after the 100 th Anniversary of the JCI Movement, in a time where JCI members are inspired to Just Act; a time when we are faced with the pressing challenges of massive youth unemployment, unprecidented migration, and economic crises and unrest in many nations. Therefore, we need to take advantage of this opportunity to unite to discuss these challenges and develop grassroots solutions, which advance the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Let’s use this time to direct our efforts to accelerate the Peace is Possible campaign. Transcript of Destination: Johannesburg, South Africa

Dear Delegates of the 2016 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference,

Welcome to Johannesburg, or Joburg or Jozi as it affectionately known. Joburg is a world class African city, an economic hub of Southern Africa, that is vibrant, diverse and has vast business and leisure opportunities that you will surely enjoy.

This year’s conference brings together our area after the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement, in a time where JCI members are inspired to Just Act; a time when we are faced with the pressing challenges of massive youth unemployment, unprecidented migration, and economic crises and unrest in many nations.

Therefore, we need to take advantage of this opportunity to unite to discuss these challenges and develop grassroots solutions, which advance the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Let’s use this time to direct our efforts to accelerate the Peace is Possible campaign. I believe that peace, in all spaces that we find ourselves, can serve as a foundation for human dignity, liberty and advancement. We therefore have a responsibility to mobilize individuals around the world to take a stand for peace. We can each start by unconditionally respecting fellow human beings and the environment. Together let’s make this conference an extraordinary human adventure.

The organizing committee has devised an exciting program in fantastic facilities with inspirational speakers, skills development sessions, company visits, forums and many other activities that will enable us to be better active citizens. You will also be able to experience the uniqueness of Joburg’s culture, the night life, lifestyle, and the famous shopping experience that this magnificent city has to offer. I wish you to make the best of the conference, have fun and enjoy your stay in Joburg.

Kind regards,

VenueSandton Convention Centre Most of the conference activities will take place

at the Sandton Convention Centre, which is

southern Africa’s leading and most prestigious,

multi-purpose exhibition and convention centre.

This 12-story structure was expertly designed to

provide convention, exhibition and special event

space over four main levels. It combines spectacular

double and triple-volume use of interior space in

its main and public areas, with smaller and more

intimate breakaway meeting rooms and galleries

on its mezzanine levels. The building has also been

designed to accommodate and provide access for

disabled visitors.

Situated in northern Johannesburg, in the heart of

Sandton’s business, hotel and entertainment district,

Sandton Convention Centre offers easy access to

over 5000 hotel rooms, is adjacent to the country’s

top shopping and entertainment complexes and

provides nearly 11,000 secure parking bays.Above: Explore Johannesburg by train —

RegistrationDelegates are strongly encouraged to register online before

arriving in Johannesburg. Upon arrival, registered delegates

should pick up their name badges at the conference

welcome desk located at O. R. Tambo International Airport.

The registration desk will be open:

• Tuesday, 3 May: 06:00–21:00

• Wednesday, 4 May: 06:00–21:00

• Thursday, 5 May: 06:00–21:00

Only registered delegates will be allowed to participate

in conference events. Admission will be restricted to

delegates wearing conference badges and holding event

entry tickets, when necessary.

Travel VisaThe majority of international travelers require a travel visa

to visit South Africa on a temporary basis for tourism or

business purposes for a period of 90 days or less.

You must apply for a visa at the nearest South African

embassy, mission or consulate — only the on-duty

consulate officer can determine whether you are eligible

to enter the country for a specific purpose. Make sure you

apply for the correct type of visa as entry into the country

may be refused if the purpose of visit is not correctly

stated. Visas are not issued on arrival at South African

ports of entry, and airline officials are obliged to insist on

viewing travel visas before allowing passengers to travel.

More information on South Africa Travel Visas can be found

here: http://bit.ly/1LaxzKO

Both the Conference Organizing Committee and JCI South

Africa will do their best to assist and ensure that registered

delegates obtain visas, however the final decision to grant

or deny a visa will be that of the relevant South African

embassy, mission or consulate.

TransportationAir Travel

Delegates arriving to Johannesburg for the conference

will fly into O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). The

conference is taking place in Sandton, Johannesburg

which is the city of arrival for international flights, therefore

there will be no need for domestic air travel except for any

personal or private travels.

If delegates are interested in flying domestically, South

Africa has a number of airlines flying between its major

cities as well as to a variety of smaller ones. Flights can be

booked online from anywhere in the world.

For more information on both international and domestic

flights entering and leaving Johannesburg please visit:

www.acsa.co.za.

If you are arriving at O. R. Tambo International Airport, you

have the option of taking a shuttle bus, rental car, Uber or

a metered taxi to your hotel. A public transport information

desk can be found on the public concourse in domestic

arrivals. The airport is 21km from the city centre and

approximatley a half-hour drive from most major parts of

the city.

Transportation to HotelsBy Train

The recommended mode of transport from O. R. Tambo

International Airport to Sandton is the Gautrain — a world-

class airport service, which is only 15 minutes between

O. R. Tambo International Airport Station and Sandton

Station.

If you are traveling with luggage and would like assistance,

this can be accommodated at the O. R. Tambo International

Airport and Sandton stations. In order to use the system,

you must purchase a Gautrain Gold Card, which is available

at all ticket offices and ticket vending machines at any

Gautrain station. For more information on the Gautrain, and

additional services, please visit: http://bit.ly/1puqqLt.

Conference Information

4

4–7 MAY 2016

O. R. Tambo International Airport Station is directly linked

to the departures level of the adjacent, new central terminal

building, which is one level below. You will also need to

purchase a return ticket; fares and routes are available

here: http://bit.ly/1puqqLt.

By Taxi

If you would like to use Uber, download the Uber app onto

your mobile device before leaving your country. If you have

the Uber app, and internet or data connection, you can

use this service to travel to and from the airport as well

as anywhere around Johannesburg and Pretoria. Uber is

more affordable than metered taxis. Please direct your Uber

driver to collect you from Terminal B Arrivals and identify

which pillar number you may be standing next to in order to

make it easier for the Uber driver to identify you.

Metered taxis, recognizable by the yellow “taxi” lights on

the car roofs, are available at the airport. While these are

considerably more expensive than Uber, they can transport

you directly to your destination. Please avoid anyone that

may offer you a ride from inside the airport building if they

do not have proper identification or licensing. Instead,

discover the taxi rank located just outside the arrivals

area. The journey to Sandton may take 30 to 45 minutes

depending on the traffic. Check that the driver is familiar

with your address, and insist they use the meter or agree

upfront on a flat fee that you are comfortable with.

an exuberant city, full of opportunities. A gem in Africa,

Johannesburg is celebrated as a vibrant megacity and the

economic powerhouse of sub-Saharan Africa. Home to

about 10 million people, Johannesburg continues to attract

those looking for opportunities. Johannesburg’s uniqueness

stands out and is unrivaled across the African continent.

Sandton, the host suburb of the conference, is the center

of the South African economy and has the most expensive

square mileage in Africa. It is also a place of opulence and

luxury as it attracts the most highly ambitious individuals

seeking opportunities in Africa.

CurrencyThe South African Rand (ZAR) is the only currency of trade

variety of foreign exchange facilities at the airport and at

the Sandton City Mall, adjacent to the convention center.

Africa. Visa and MasterCard are universally accepted, some

shopping mall and hotels. Please avoid withdrawing

and carrying large sums of cash if it is unnecessary to

do so. Exercise the same vigilance in terms of security

consciousness and discretion as you would elsewhere

when using an ATM.

Apartheid Museum Since its opening in 2001, the Apartheid Museum is

dedicated to illustrating apartheid and the 20th century

history of South Africa. The museum is the first of its

kind as it depicts both the rise and fall of apartheid.

The museum contains a series of 22 exhibitions, which

takes its visitors through the emotional journey of racial

discrimination and the struggle to overcome it. The

museum serves as a sign of hope and showcases how

South Africa has prospered in the fight against oppression.

Constitution Hill Dating back to 1892, Constitution Hill is a human rights

precinct and a world-class heritage attraction incorporating

cultural, historical, artistic, educational and recreational

spaces that celebrate South Africa’s ability to build

a peaceful democracy. Over time, Constitution Hill has

served as both a fort during war and a prison, which

infamously housed Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

Today, it exhibits African Art and a museum, which includes

the Mandela Cell. It is also home to the South African

Constitutional Court.

Lion Park Situated on 500 acres of land, Lion Park is a wildlife

conservation enclosure for lions located in the Gauteng

province of South Africa. While the park is home to over

80 lions, including the rare white lion, it also showcases

over twenty other African wildlife species including hyenas,

cheetahs, antelopes, zebras and giraffes. The Lion Park

offers stunning close-up views of the animals 360 days

a year through a variety of day or night-guided safari tours

and serves as both an educational and once in a lifetime

opportunity.

Johannesburg Botanical GardensThe Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, established in 1969,

contain a beautiful mix of both indigenous and exotic fauna

across 125 hectares. Its wildlife is surrounded by vast

lawns, which overlook the Emmarentia Dam, a popular

place to canoe or boat. Visitors also enjoy its special

gardens including the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose

Garden and the Herb Garden. The gardens also contain

a tea pergola and two smaller dams which are home to

many aquatic birds.

Cradle of HumankindDeclared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the

Cradle of Humankind contains a vast network of limestone

caves most known for its fossils that lie beneath the

47,000 hectares it occupies. The caves hold the fossilized

skeletons of hominids (the hominid family includes

modern-day humans and their direct ancestors). Overall,

nearly 900 fossils have been recovered from at least four

different hominid species in the region that date back

past 3.5 million years. Visitors to the site can take guided

walking tours to view several important aspects of the

historic land.

South African Museum of Military History grounds

in Johannesburg. It was constructed in memory of

the soldiers who served and passed with the Rand

Regiments in the 1899–1902 Anglo Boer War.

The structure was designed by British architect

Sir Edwin Lutyens and features an ornate angel

atop a dome. The pillars list the soldiers who were

lost during this conflict and in 2002, the memorial

was re-dedicated to recognize all men, women
