There is onlyone thing we cansay about thisyear’s PaczkiDay.

Despite the bitter cold, PaczkiDay was another success By Charles Sercombe

Detroit rocker JackWhite was the first tostep up to the plate.

White, who now lives inNashville, pitched in$10,000 toward an on-line fundraiser, whichstarted last Monday, toreplace the grass field atthe historic Hamtramckbaseball stadium.

The Piast Institute andthe Friends of HistoricHamtramck Stadiumlaunched a fundraiser atpatronicity.com/hhs withthe hope to raise at least$50,000.

entertainment complex.There was no comment

from White, but he is nostranger to Hamtramck.

His band, the WhiteStripes, got their earlystart at the Metro TimesBlowout Festivals held inHamtramck back in the1990s. The White Stripeswent onto internationalstardom.

White also was a steady

customer at the formerHenry the Hatter store onJos. Campau.

The stadium is only oneof a handful survivingfrom the famed NationalNegro league. The DetroitStars once played at thestadium.

There was a time whenAfrican-Americans werenot allowed to play in thewhite-only major leagues. The color line was eventu-ally broke in the 1950sand 1960s.

Some legendary playersonce played at the Ham-tramck Stadium, includingSatchel Paige, possiblythe best pitcher ever, andDetroit’s own Norman“Turkey” Stearns, whosedaughter still lives in thearea.

As for funding the big-ger renovation, it is hopedthat the Ralph C. Wilson,Jr. Foundation will kick inthe money.

The Foundation hasbeen donating money tocommunities to help en-courage youth to get moreactive in sports.

Hopes for the Founda-tion to step up are not far-fetched. The Foundationhas already donated$800,000 to replace theartificial turf at KeyworthStadium, and to fund amaster plan study to ren-ovate all of Veterans Park, where the baseball sta-dium is located.

In Our Opinion

Good things continueto happen to Hamtramck, despite our occasionalbumps in the road.

Detroit rock and rollstar Jack White is donat-ing $10,000 in the effortto renovate the field atthe historic baseball sta-dium here in town.

The Piast Institute andthe Friends of HistoricHamtramck Stadiumhope to raise at least$50,000 through an on-line fundraiser.

Although White grew upin southwest Detroit, hehas a special liking forboth Hamtramck andbaseball.

His band the WhiteStripes first began play-ing here in the now de-

funct Metro TimesBlowout festivals.

He still stopped by,even when the WhiteStripes struck it big. Weremember seeing him fre-quenting Henry the Hatterwhen it was still operatinghere in town.

A big thanks goes outto Jack for his support.

The Friends of HistoricHamtramck Stadiumhave some mighty ambi-tious plans for the sta-dium.

We are awfully lucky tohave these volunteers, dedicating themselves torestore this stadium.

It is only one of a hand-ful of stadiums still sur-viving from the Negroleague baseball era.

Many legendary playersgraced that field back inthe 1930s when, shame-fully, black players werenot allowed to play in theall-white major leagues.

It is hoped that base-ball will one day return. There are plans to turnthe site into a multi-sportfacility, and also serve asa host for other types ofentertainment offerings.

Which could make itinto a huge destinationlocation, and a majorboost for Hamtramck’seconomy.

Check out the patronic-ity.com site to help bringthis stadium back to life.

And again, a big thanksto Jack White for lendinga helping hand.

Hamtramck’s historic stadiumis on track to being reborn

By Charles SercombeThis week’s arctic blast

of cold took a little breakfor this year’s annual 5KPaczki Day Run last Satur-day.

Maybe it was in honorof newly-elected Gov.Gretchen Whitmer and lt.Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, whocame to participate in therun.

Whitmer got the rockstar treatment here, withfolks clamoring to posewith her for a photo.

Once again, thousandsof runners – actuallyabout 2,000 -- swarmedthrough the city streets.

It didn’t take even theslowest runners – or walk-ers -- very long to makethe trek. The run was overin about an hour.

Afterward, runners andthe curious enjoyed freepaczki and cold beer in aheated tent.

A number of the partici-pants made a day of it,and later kept our localbars and restaurantsbusy for most of the day.

Once again, city streets werejammed for paczki run

Fest is upon us. Can youfeel it?

If not, we bet you canhear it.

Opening last night only atthe Ant Hall/Ghost loungecomplex on Caniff (afterthis paper went to press),nine acts were slated totake to the two stages inwhat was billed as the“Opening Night Party.”

The real meat starts siz-zling today, when some 96

scheduled acts are dis-persed over two dozenlocal venues; Saturday fol-lows up with an even-greater count of 105 moreacts. Detroit Threadshosts eight of these onSaturday all by itself, begin-ning at 4 p.m.

Other participating barsinclude Outer limitslounge, Bumbo’s, Kelly’sBar, Small’s, Whiskey inthe Jar, Baker Streetcar,Polka Dot lounge, The Pol-ish Sea league, Trixie’s,

Sanctuary, High Dive,Barter and the Paintedlady lounge.

Additional watching-and-listening spots are P.l.A.V.Posts 6 & 10, the Mooselodge, the HamtramckPublic library, Bank Suey,Café 1923, the Polish Vil-lage Café, and the DeliteCafé.

The acts are far too nu-merous to list here, num-bering as they do 213 (upfrom the official posted209 on the website, un-

less a couple bands areplaying more than once).

All-access wristbandsare $15 available at over20 local record stores andsuch, listed on the festi-val’s website.

drama students are beingoffered a theater ticketmost folks would kill for.

The Broadway smash hit“Hamilton” is coming totown soon, and while mosttheater-lovers will scram-ble just to find high-pricedtickets, HHS drama stu-dents can see the showfor a mere $10 bill.

And yes – a ten spot isalso known as a “Hamil-ton.”

But there is a catch. They have to work for it.The students had to

read material that Alexan-der Hamilton wrote whilehe and other founding fa-thers of the countryformed our government.

After that, they had tocome up with a creativeperformance to reflect onwhat they learned. Dramacoach Nancy Walter saidthat took the form of po-etry, rap, skits and creative

writing.The best of the perform-

ances were recorded, andthen sent to the folks whoproduce “Hamilton.” HHSstudents will be competingagainst other area dramastudents for a chance toperform their pieces onstage before the show.

In the meantime, the stu-dents need financial helpto offset the cost of rentingbuses, as well as to coverthe cost of the tickets.

A number of fundraisersare being held.

At the Polish Sea league(at Edwin and Brombach),two “Hamilton HappyHours” will be held onMarch 8 and 15, from 3-6p.m.

The suggested donationis $5, which will get youpizza and $1 off drinks.

At Trixie’s Bar (2656 Car-penter) on March 13, atrivia night will be heldstarting at 6:30 p.m.

They are asking for a

$10 donation. They arealso asking that teamsconsist of no more than

five people. Don’t have ateam? You can join up with
