The Master’s Word

Greetings from the East,

Spring is here at last and as we busy ourselves with the task of cleaning and yard work neglected

in the winter months remember to help your neighbor and especially a Brother should the need

arise.

“March was a busy month with the DDGM official visit, The Order of Eastern Star installation of

officers and Ladies of the Oriental Shrine installation.” I know these ladies will have a great year

and if there is anything we at Desoto Lodge can do for you please don’t hesitate to ask.

“As I write this article we have three new EA’s starting their journey east and five potential candi-

dates who will be petitioning our lodge.” We also have nine Fellow Craft waiting to be Raised to

the sublime Degree of Master Mason on April 2nd. “Desoto Lodge is growing and I couldn’t be

more proud of our lodge and the support of our brothers.”

“On April 14th we will be visiting AW Windhorst Lodge #185. It is hoped that we can get 100 Ma-

sons from around the district to attend AW Windhorst lodge on this night.” Our Senior Deacon

David StJohn is the architect of this event. Please plan on attending and be part of the excitement

that is the 23rd Masonic District.

April 30th author Andrew Hammer will be speaking at Hillsborough Lodge #25 about his book

Observing the Craft. This event is open to everyone and all members of Desoto Lodge are prepaid

to attend. Start time is 9am to 11am then lunch and will resume at noon. He is a great speaker and

loves our fraternity.

From the West

S.W. Bill Miller

To the Brothers, Sisters, Friends and Masonic Family;

This has been a busy year already, Spring and Easter were in March this year, it was a Leap Year and I could go on. In addition to the Masonic Officer Installation, we have had the DeMolay, the Eastern Star and now most recently the La-dies Oriental Shrine. It is not very Often that I am at the lodge and some thing is not going on, and that is good. It shows that we are active and involved in many ways.

I would like to ask all of you to help be good stewards of the building. If you are the last one to leave, please make sure the lights are off, the coffee pots are off and emptied and the doors are locked. If you notice anything that needs the Senior Wardens attention, please leave a note in my mail box in the office or give me a call at 757-635-2195 so I can address it.

The weekend of April 7,8 and 9 we will be working with the Boy Scouts to replace the tiles in the Dining Area. Please come out and assist us - we will need allot of help. To paraphrase Worshipful Tracy, if every Mason could give an hour, it makes a huge difference.

Last year I wanted to use an article on the that had been on the bulletin board and had gone missing. I recently found it and think it is a good subject as we bring in new Masons.

Do You Recognize Me?

I’m the guy sitting by himself off to the side. I asked to join, I paid my dues, and I promised to be faithful and loyal. I’ve come to the meetings but hardly anyone pays attention to me. Everyone says, “Hi” but no one really talks to me. I’ve tried to fit in but everyone seems to huddle up in their own special group. I felt awkward and out of place when I sat down beside you for dinner, perhaps I should have waited for you to invite me to join you. I want to be active in the Lodge but I’m just not sure how to do it-the same guys always seem to do the work but they don’t seem interested in having anyone new join in to help them. I missed a few meetings after joining but no one asked me at the next meeting where I had been. I want to get involved, I want to know more, and I want to feel like I’m part of the Lodge. But right now I’m thinking about the TV show I’m missing.

Don’t Expect Him to Be a Good Mason If You’re Not Willing to Do the Same.

All of Us Are Mentors, Whether We Realize It or Not!

On April the 2nd, we are raising 8 new Masons. This is a good lesson to keep in mind as we bring new men in the lodge. Every one of us can sets an example of some sort.

Fraternally

From the South

J.W. Steve Williams

Fraternal greetings from the South,

March was an especially busy month for the kitchen and I would like the thank the members of the Walter Fishback Chapter of DeMolay for all the hard work cleaning up during the DDGM visit. I would also thank Brother Gator Castello's for all the assistance during the EA Degree in my ab-sence.

Our family night meal was canceled due to the elections but Worshipful Divito did a great job coordi-nating the Brothers to provide hot dogs for voters as per our DeSoto Lodge tradition.

Our pancake Breakfast went well last month with a total of 99 guests. All the extra food was donat-ed to Portamento of Hope to be distributed in food baskets to the needy.

Looking forward to April. I'm ready to hit the ground running with the guy’s night meal of baked pork chops, stuffing fresh vegetables, and dessert. Family night's meal is going to chicken parme-san with carbonara, Caesar salad and, dessert.

The special item for pancake breakfast is going to be baked French Toast casserole with maple syr-up. I look forward to seeing everyone at lodge in the coming weeks.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

By Bill Bartman

What About the Lonely?

As a Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, we try to make our presence known through many phil-anthropic activities like supporting an elementary school with much-needed supplies, participating in the “Adopt a Highway” program for a 2-mile stretch on Highway 301, donating to good, wholesome charities like the guide dog program and underprivileged children, but what about those scores of lonely people out there who are really hurting emotionally? Isn’t there something we can do for them? Let’s think about this problem a little. We became a mason so we could better control our emotions, and become better men … every day and in every way! There are many kinds of lonely people out there, like singles, surviving spouses, senior citizens, workaholics, and many others. But we have a Masonic Home in St. Petersburg, so let’s focus our attention on those who are elderly or are in need skilled nursing care. Most of these folks experienced child-rearing, making sacrifices for their kids just like we do today. They labored long hours to provide food, clothing, and shelter for their families, and now they feel like they’ve been put aside and nobody re-ally cares about them anymore. That isn’t good, is it? We have all heard the expression, “The Graying of America,” and realize that with the advances in medicine and diets, people are living much longer than they did in the past. We have moved from an agrarian society to an urban-technical one, so we just don’t have the time to spend with each other any more like we used to. Kids are involved in all sorts of activities, parents are working hard and involved in many organizations and activities, so when our parents or grandparents start needing our time and assis-tance, we just can’t give it! When they can’t prepare their own meals anymore, or take care of their prop-erty, we have to decide whether to take them in to our homes, or look for an assisted living facility, or whatever, but do they really understand what is happening? Are they hurt or insulted that we have “our own lives” to live, and can’t really make the necessary sacrifices to care for them? My mother-in-law went to an assisted living facility, and it didn’t take long in that new surrounding for her to feel lonely in spite of there being many other residents and activities available to her. When I went to visit, I was saddened by stories of so many “forgotten” seniors there, who hadn’t had a visitor for months on end. How sad. I started visiting with some of these folks, and they have marvelous stories to share about their experiences in life, yet they have nobody to share them with any more. How often do we drive past a nursing home or assisted living facility without even giving a thought about stopping in to visit and cheering someone up? It only takes a few minutes, and any of the staff can point out who is being neglected and in need of a visit or a friendly hello and a smile. We are told to care for widows and orphans, aren’t we? Wouldn’t it help you feel better to know that you actually cheered up someone who is lonely and in need of a visit? Maybe it could even be a family member that you haven’t visited for a while. Put on your best smile, a positive attitude, and give someone a heartfelt hug or handshake, and “make their day!” It’s the sign of a good man getting better and better,

De Soto Lodge #105

Free and Accepted Mason

10801 Desoto Rd Riverview, FL 33568 6 March 2016

Past Masters of De Soto Lodge #105,

I would like to request your assistance with a project that is dear to my heart; and that is preserving the histo-

ry of De Soto Lodge. Each and every one of you played a key roll in ensuring that De Soto #105 is to this day, still

holding on strong and making a difference in our community. Now it’s time for you to permanently record your ef-

forts in a De Soto lodge history book.

“I would like to ask that each Past Master of De Soto lodge submit a brief report (2000 words max) to tell us

about their year in the East.” What went well? What did not go well? Provide the details of your year, both positive

and negative. What problems did you encounter? How did you resolve the issues that you had to resolve? What

words of wisdom would you like to pass on to the future Worshipful Masters (WM) of De Soto? I would like to ask

that each of you put your ego aside and tell us the good, the bad and the ugly of your year as WM. We can only

learn from each other on how to improve this Fraternity. My year was far from perfect and I upset a few with my

decisions, but these are learning points for Masters to come and the must be shared.

As a fairly new Mason I look at our lodge and wonder, who built the chairs that our officers proudly sit in to

this day? I know they were hand made by a Brother. I know a brother built the Altar that many of us have knelt at to

take our sacred obligation to the Fraternity. There are other intricate woodworking pieces displayed throughout the

lodge, but few know who created such works of art? “What is the story behind famous mural of the building of King

Solomon’s Temple by Worshipful Doc Rivera, where each new Brother begins their journey?” Each of you has a

story to tell. Please help us record the history of one of the best lodges in the 23rd Masonic District.

Your inputs will be compiled into a history book that will pick up from the last history book, which recorded

up to 1988. Your submission will then fall into the hands of the editors or history committee where it will be re-

viewed for grammatical errors. You release editing rights to the history committee once you submit your report. You

will be provided a chance to review the end product before it goes to press.

Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this endeavor. I would really like full participation on

this project to give our new brothers new Brothers an idea of how De Soto Lodge #105 has become one of the best

lodges in not only in the 23rd Masonic District, but in the entire state of Florida.
