They spokeabout their teachers at the time, Timand Nora Kerrisk, Jim Lyons and SeanO’Dell, cycling and often walking toschool from as far away as Brosna,Knocknagoshel, Currow and Scartaglin, studying ‘Hamlet’, sitting threeMathematics papers for their Leaving –Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry, andmany other subjects. AN INTRODUCTIONMy work is extremely varied. I might see a person who simply wants tochange their glasses or consult about contact lenses, or someone whorequires a vision screening for a driving licence.Galvin Optometrists is a family practice and we have a special interest inchildren’s vision. Every child’s eyes should be routinely assessed on anannual basis. Good vision is essential to learning. If your child has aproblem, the key to preventing long term vision problems is earlydetection. However, I also deal with much more serious issues, including suddenvisual loss; glaucoma, which is most typically a problem with pressure inthe eyeball; infections such as conjunctivitis; or a condition called AgeRelated Macular Degeneration. It is important to realise that health and lifestyle are hugely important foryour eyes. A poor diet and smoking can be contributory factors to pooreye health.I cannot sufficiently emphasise the importance of having routine eyeexaminations, regardless of how good your vision might be. A full eyehealth check can prevent a small problem turning into a very seriousissue.IIff yyoouu hhaavvee aannyy qquueerriieess oorr nneeeedd ttoo aarrrraannggee aann aappppooiinnttmmeenntt ccaallll oouurr tteeaammoonn 006666 77114433558844 aanndd wwee wwiillll bbee hhaappppyy ttoo hheellpp..

THE LATEKATHLEENREIDYKathleen Reidy (neeO'Connor), Knocknagore,Castleisland, passed awaypeacefully surrounded byher family on the 19th ofSeptember ‘14. Kathleen wasborn 24th of June 1926 to Hughand Ellen O'Connor from Gortacappal, Scartaglin. Together they raised their five children, Kathleen theeldest, followed by Denis RIP, Willie, John and Bridie. In her early years Kathleen worked as a secretary forDr Moriaty in Castleisland and Dr Buckley in Tralee. Shemarried the late Michael Reidy. Michael was a nativeof Knocknagore, where they settled down and startedtheir family. They had four children, John, Ellen, Martin(Hein) and Kath. In the early 50s they had a greengrocer in Castleislandtown, formerly known as ‘Roches’, where they soldtheir home-grown produce. In the early 60’s theystarted their own cottage craft industry where theyproduced a range of handmade souvenirs. It developedinto a thriving business. These goods were distributed

throughout the country and beyond. As well as working alongside her husband Michael inthe workshop, she was a full time mother anddedicated homemaker. Kathy’s brown bread, sconesand tarts were known far and wide. Like many familiesat the time, money was scarce but it was never felt inthe home. These years formed the close bonds that she had withher children, which have lasted a life time. The arrival of grandchildren brought great joy toMichael and Kathy. Fond and lasting memories that arerecalled with much laughter are precious and will bepassed down to the generations to come. As well asraising her own grandchildren Kathy, who was fondlyknown in the family as Nancy, looked after Amy Pryaland Emer Brosnan, who have their own stories to tellabout Knocknagore. Kathy was a very sociable person and a well-knownface at the Bingo halls. Gales of laughter resoundedform the bingo bus as they travelled the roads of Kerryand further afield. She liked nothing more than tofinish the night with a song, with her husband Michaelin Tom Mc McCarthy and Monnies in Castleisland. Inlater years, The Castleisland Day Care Centre held aspecial place in Kathy’s heart. She attended everyThursday, travelling by bus with her lifelong friend andneighbour the late Mrs Hannah Leane. They were

treated with love and kindness by all the staff. Kathy had a lifetime devotion to prayer. She was nevertoo far from her well-thumbed prayer book, which wasone of the gifts presented to the altar at her funeralmass. The rosary was a daily routine at home and thelist of people she offered prayers for got longer by theday. As long as she was able to attend she participatedin mass, even after her confinement to home theintroduction of the mass transmitter allowed her topartake in mass from her local St. Stephen and John’schurch. This brought her great comfort through herlater years. The esteem with which Kathy was held was veryevident by the turn out over the days of her funeral. This brought much comfort to her family and is greatlyappreciated. The sun shone as the funeral cortegewinded its way to Kilbanivane cemetery whereKathleen was laid to rest alongside her husbandMichael. The strains of ‘Danny Boy’ rang out throughthe gathering of family and friends, as a fitting tributeto a Lady who loved Irish music. Kathy is survived by her four children, sons in law, daughters in law, ten grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren, her sister Bridie, brothers William andJohn, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.

JOHN MITCHELS 3-11 BALLYMAC 0-9: A windy and rainswept Currow was the venue for this Castleislanddistrict final in which our opponents were John Mitchels. This was always going to be a difficult task for us andthe conditions certainly didn't help our cause. Playingwith the aid of a strong wind Mitchels settled quicklyand were five points ahead inside ten minutes. DaraKeane got us off the mark with two pointed frees.Mitchels scored two more points while Dara Keane andBarry Lyons pointed for us. Just as it looked like we werecoming more into the game a defensive mistake let ouropponents in for a goal followed by a point to leave thehalf time score Mitchels 1-9 Ballymac 0-4With the wind at our backs there was hope of a bettersecond half performance. These hopes were quicklydashed as Mitchels goaled again with their first attackof the second half . Liam O'Brien, Dara Keaneand Josh scored points but in attempting to clear ourgoals another defensive mistake gifted the Mitchels agoal. Midway through the half we were 3-9 to 0-8behind. We needed goals now and these did not come.Mitchels adding two more points and Barry completingthe scoring for us. Davy Rodgers, Dara Keane, Josh,Tadhg, Barry, Cathal, and the outstanding Dara Leenwere best for us on a disappointing day.We play Mitchels again in the final of Coiste Tra-Li leaguethis Wednesday evening in Ballyseedy.FAOI 12: BALLYMAC GOLD TEAM 5-12 CURROW B 4-08 Last Friday night we played Currow in the final ofCastleisland District League in Castleisland Desmondspitch. SUPPORTING NATURE IN AUTUMN*Start putting out bird feeders. This will help birds startpreparing for the cold months ahead.*Leave leaf litter in place. Leaf litter, comprising fallenleaves, bark and twigs accumulates beneath shrubs andtrees during the autumn months. Plant litter performs anumber of important biodiversity functions includingproviding homes for many small and diverse creaturessuch as worms, and insects. These creatures areimportant food sources for birds such as wrens, robins, thrushes and blackbirds who rummage in theundergrowth.Leaf litter also plays a key role in returning nutrients tothe soil and maintaining soil structure as it decomposes. For these reasons it is important not to disturb fallenlitter and to leave it in place where possible. Also, leavesome piles of leaves in your garden for hibernating frogs.*If you grow sunflowers, leave the withered heads inplace so that birds can eat the seeds.

APPLES CAN FIGHT OBESITYA recent study (done on mice) found that intestinal flora— bacteria in the gut — have a significant impact onobesity. Mice without certain microbes actually gainedsignificantly more weight when they ate fatty foods thanmice with those microbes. That weight gain wasaccompanied by an inflammation that caused the mice toeat more as well as causing them to develop a resistanceto insulin, one of the early signs of diabetes. When thespecific-microbe-lacking flora was transferred from theobese mice to the skinny mice, the skinny mice began togain weight just like the obese mice. This means that it’s theoretically possible to change thebody’s tendency toward obesity just by changing thebacteria in the gut. And the apple study, from WashingtonState University, found that some of the indigestible stuffin apples actually encourages the growth of that friendly,obesity-fighting bacteria.According to the study the Granny Smith apple

nondigestible compounds actually changed theproportions of fecal bacteria from obese mice to besimilar to that of lean mice. All varieties of apple, not justthe champion Granny Smith, contain some level of theindigestible material that fights obesity. MAREMMA GUARDIAN DOGS HELP SAVE AUSTRALIAN FAIRYPENGUINSEudyptula minor, otherwise known as the little penguin or(in New Zealand) the little blue penguin, is dubbed thefairy penguin by Australians. It is the smallest penguinon the planet, measuring 13 inches in height when full-grown, and weighing two to three pounds on average.Fairy penguins spend most of their time in the ocean, butthey do return to land to breed (once they reach aboutthree years of age) and to moult. Between August andFebruary, mature penguins breed and raise their young inburrows or nesting boxes near the coast. While they were once widespread along the coastlines ofAustralia, the arrival of human settlers (and the smallmammals they brought as pets or stowaways) kicked offthe decline of the fairy penguin. Since the '80s, theseteeny penguins have been tracked and studied on MiddleIsland, a small island close to Warrnambool on the coastof south-eastern Australia that was once home to around1,500 fairy penguins. Researchers noticed in the early '90sthat the local population suffered increasinglydevastating death tolls thanks to predation by the redfox, a species introduced to the Australian mainland tocontrol rabbit populations. Researcher Rebecca Overeemdiscovered that the 2004-2005 breeding season saw justfour fairy penguins returning to Middle Island.Maremmas make sense as guardian dogs because theyhave been carefully bred to guard sheep in central Italysince the days of the Roman Empire. The dogs’distinguishing qualities are their thick white coats (whichallow them to sleep outside with the sheep and to blendin with the flock so that the shepherd can easily identifyintruders), strong builds, and protective temperaments.Maremmas are known to form a close bond with the landand creatures they protect, making it easy for them tospot outsiders. Instead of attacking would-be intruders, these huge smart dogs prefer simply to chase them away. Since 2006, the project has worked out a system forpairing dogs together for training and building theirfamiliarity with the land and the penguins from a youngage. During the breeding season, the dogs stay on MiddleIsland for several days at a time to keep away the foxes. Then the Maremmas go back to the mainland for a fewdays of R and R so they don’t get bored or worn out.Introducing the Maremmas and closing Middle Island tothe public have both helped the little penguin colonybloom to nearly 200 breeding adults. Researchers andvolunteers have documented no new instances of foxpredation since the first introduction of the Maremmas. The Middle Island Maremma Project is such a well-received conservation program that it has inspiredsimilar projects like the gannet protection program atPoint Danger. The project received the AustralianGovernment Coastcare Award in 2010, and its successinspired a full-length feature film called Oddball, whichwill be released in 2015.

CAT TRACKS DOWN ELDERLY OWNER AFTER SHE WASSENT TO LIVE IN A NURSING HOMEA few months ago, when Nancy Cowen was placed underthe care of staff at the Bramley House nursing facility inWestcott, England, she was forced to say goodbye to herloveable cat, named Cleo, whom she had adopted as astray eight years earlier. Ms. Cowen’s family had given thecat to one of her neighbours to take care of — but Cleoclearly had other plans.Staff at the home say that about two weeks after Ms.Cowen moved in, they began receiving visits from afriendly cat who lingered and slept out front, spendingher days wandering the grounds peering throughwindows of the home. They had presumed the cat wasjust a stray and started feeding her. A few weeks later, Nancy met the cat and remarked tostaff that she had a striking resemblance to the pet she’dbeen forced to leave behind, but my Cleo had lost most

of her tail. The care staff checked, and the cat wasmissing most of her tail, that’s when they realized that itreally was Cleo.Bramley House care staff was stunned at the discoveryand think it is just amazing that Cleo found Nancy. There’sno way she could have followed her, since it’s quite a waysfrom where Nancy used to live before she came here astaff member said.No one knows how Cleo, the incredibly faithful cat, managed to find her owner — but care staff say they haveno plans on ending the happy reunion. Cleo has beeninvited to stay with Ms. Cowen full time; in fact, she'shardly left her owner’s side since.

NEW PETITION ASKS THE GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDEINFORMATION IN PLAIN ENGLISHDetails of a new petition calling for plain English to beused by Government was launched in Dublin this week. The petition asks the Taoiseach to ensure that all publicinformation produced by Government and its agencies iswritten in plain English. Plain English is a style of writingand presenting information that helps the reader tounderstand it the first time they read it. It involves usingshort, clear sentences and everyday words. It does notuse small print or unnecessary jargon. The petition isbeing organised by The National Adult Literacy Agency(NALA). Recent research commissioned by NALA foundthat almost 95% of Irish adults are in favour of plainEnglish. About half of them (48%) find official documents, including information from the Government difficult tounderstand. They also find jargon, terms and conditions, and financial information challenging. NALA want peopleto sign the petition to help them to raise this importantissue with the Government and promote the use of plainEnglish in Government information to the public.Speaking at the launch, Director, Inez Bailey, stated: “Bothcitizens and governments benefit from clear information, written in plain English. Citizens are more likely tounderstand their rights and governments are more likelyto make better use of their resources.”“That’s why we recommend that all public informationproduced by Government and its agencies is written inplain English,” she continued. “After all, plain Englishencourages individuals to engage with public servicesand make informed decisions when doing so. Using plainEnglish can also save the public sector time, money andpossible frustration by having to take repeated requestsfor information.” Last year Britain’s civil servants werebanned from using the jargon that has kept comedywriters in gags for years. Out goes ‘deliver’. Pizzas andpost are delivered, it points out, not abstract conceptslike ‘improvements’ or ‘priorities’. Officials can no long‘drive’ anything out (unless it is cattle) or ‘foster’ (unlessit is children).Tackling is also banned (unless playing rugby or football)while the ‘key’ should always be in the lock.NALA’s petition calls for public information such asletters, forms and information leaflets to be written inplain English. This means: using everyday words where possible;explaining specialised words if they can’t be avoided;keeping sentences to about 15 to 20 words; andusing a readable font type and size.NALA’s petition is welcomed by the National ConsumerAgency (NCA). The NCA is happy to support initiatives, likethis, that encourage other organisations to write andpresent their information more clearly to consumers.Speaking before the launch, Chief Executive of the NCA,Karen O’Leary, said:“Using plain English has helped us to provide consumerswith clear and accessible information. Our website, consumerhelp.ie was developed using plain Englishprinciples. It has become a trusted source of informationand a ‘go to’ place for consumers seeking information.Providing clear information also makes good businesssense as it increases efficiency and value for money.”People can sign the petition online at www.nala.ieor www.change.org
