WHAT IS SUCCESSFULLY AGING IN PLACE?
Life span increase
60% of individuals with Downs Syndrome have Alzheimer's by the time they are 60
Impact of aging related declines Increased risks for falls, choking, & skin breakdown
Multiple chronic diseases requiring complex support care by nurses, therapists, and well trained caregivers
OUR JOURNEY 65 years of providing community
residential care Aging of our population
Alzheimer's-Dementia Accessibility issues Access to good health care
Less than 30% of homes are fully accessible
Over 100 locations to consider for health aging 38 single family homes 11 homes require immediate change
UNIVERSAL CHALLENGE…AGING IN PLACE
6
Accessibility barriers in current living environments • Narrow hallways and steep staircases • Bathrooms and kitchens not accessible • Fall Hazards • Poor line of sight for supervision • Fire safety concerns – no sprinklers Typical response for health safety concerns: General population: adding in home supports Group home living: adding staffing each year to meet safety/supervision needs because of environments that are not appropriately designed to support aging in place Physical inventory of homes must be changed.
