    INTRODUCTION

These step-by-step instructions will lead you through the workflow procedure in order to get familiar with the software environment. »Starter .dwg files« should be used.

In this tutorial you will learn how to draw cross section views in the drawing and how to design cross sections with typical cross sections elements such as shoulders, embankments, substructure, ditches, pavements, etc. You will also learn how to edit typical cross section elements and how to label them.

    1. DRAW CROSS SECTION VIEW

This command reads the data from the source DWG files (Layout and Profile) or CRO and LS files and draws terrain lines and symbols in desired number of consecutive cross sections. It also enables to insert and label the roadway.

    Open the drawing »Profile.dwg«.

    1. Your alignment »Axis_road« should be set as active (the icon next to the alignment name is coloured blue).

    2. From the Ribbon under Cross Sections tab, on

Initial setup panel click Draw CS View.

    3. In Read terrain dialog box specify: Table type: Plateia Plot scale: 200 X-scale factor: 1 Y-scale factor: 1 Input Data: - Input file - Layout: current drawing

    - Input file - Profile: current drawing First cross section: P1 Last cross section: P94 Maximum section width left [m]: 30 Maximum section width right [m]: 30 Elevation [m]: 50 Humus thickness [m]: 0.2 No. of columns: 10 No. of rows: 10

    Check: Insert roadway.

    4. Confirm with OK.

    5. Select insertion point for upper left corner.

    2. TYPICAL CROSS SECTION ELEMENTS

Plateia provides capabilities for designing and editing roadway cross sections in a detailed way with almost no geometry limitations to the final project design.

The typical cross section elements (TSC) group of commands contains commands for inserting of individual TCS elements such as shoulders, embankments, substructure, ditches, pavements, etc. It is possible to insert TCS elements such as blocks, lines, points, etc.

    2.1 Draw shoulder

    1. From the Ribbon under Cross Section tab, on Draw

TCS Elements panel click on icon Shoulder. 2. In Shoulder dialog box define a set of cross sections, where shoulder should be inserted. Press

button to select all cross sections. 3. In Settings, define Slope: Fixed Check: Draw in fill. 4. Define Element label: SHLD (or any random name). Length [m]: 1 Slope on upper edge [%]: 6 Slope on lower edge [%]: 6 5. Confirm with OK. 6. In the drawing, select element and insertion point: click on the left edge of Lane_L2. 7. The same repeat on the right side. Once again click

on icon Shoulder , parameters stay the same as before, confirm with OK and click on the right edge of Lane_R2.

    2.2 Draw embankment

    1. From the Ribbon under Cross Section tab, on Draw TCS Elements panel click on icon Embankment. 2. In Embankment dialog box define a set of cross sections, where embankment should be inserted.

Press button to select all cross sections. 3. Specify output type Up to humus in full, up to terrain in cut. Check: Draw in fill Draw in cut.

    4. Define element label: EMBANK (or any random name). Slope: 1.5 Inclination unit: 1:x 5. Confirm with OK. 6. In the drawing, select element and insertion point: click on the left edge of left shoulder. 7. The same repeat on the right side. Once again click

on icon Embankment , parameters stay the same as before, confirm with OK and click on the right edge of right shoulder.

    2.3 Draw pavement

    1. From the Ribbon under Cross Section tab, on Draw

TCS Elements panel click on icon Pavement. 2. In Pavement dialog box define a set of cross sections, where pavement should be inserted.

Press button to select all cross sections. 3. In Settings, define element label: PAVEM (or any random name). Thickness [cm]: 5 Slope [1:x]: 0 Distance [cm]: 0 4. Output: check Select elements. 5. Confirm with OK. 6. In the drawing, select elements: click on Lane_L1 and Lane_R1 and press Enter.

    7. Once again click on icon Pavement , Parameters stay the same as before, only element Label change to PAVEM2, confirm with OK and

select elements: click on Lane_L2 and Lane_R2 and press Enter.

    8. The next step is to draw the second layer of

pavement. Click on icon Pavement. 9. In Pavement dialog box define a set of cross Sections, where pavement should be inserted.

Press button to select all cross sections. 10. In Settings, define element label: PAVEM3 Thickness [cm]: 20 11. Confirm with OK. 12. In the drawing, select elements: click on Lane_L1 and Lane_R1 and press Enter.

    13. Once again click on icon Pavement , Parameters stay the same as before, only Element label change to PAVEM4, confirm with OK and select elements: click on Lane_L2 and Lane_R2 and press Enter.

    2.4 Draw substructure

    1. From the Ribbon under Cross Section tab, on Draw TCS Elements panel click on icon

Substructure. 2. In Substructure dialog box define a set of cross sections, where substructure should be

inserted. Press button to select all cross sections. 3. In Settings, define element label: SUBSTR (or any random name). Type: Two slopes Thickness [cm]: 40 Distance from upper edge [m]: 0 Minimum slope [%]: 1 Constant slope [%]: 1 Check: Draw to embankment. 4. Confirm with OK. 6. In the drawing, select elements: click on Lane_L1 and Lane_R1 and press Enter.

    3. EDIT TCS ELEMENTS

With this command group it is possible to edit designed cross sections. Only Plateia commands should be used, not standard AutoCAD/BricsCAD editing commands.

    Open the drawing »Cross sections.dwg«.

    3.1 Edit

Assume that inclination of ditch's embankment should be changed from 1:1.5 to 1:1.

    1. From the Ribbon under Cross Section tab, on Edit

TCS Elements panel click on icon Edit. 2. Pick TCS element in the drawing: ditch. 3. In Ditch dialog box define a set of cross sections, where change should be applied.

Press button to select all cross sections. 4. First embankment inclination [1:x]: 1 Second embankment inclination [1:x]: 1 5. Confirm with OK.

    3.2 Other commands

There are bunch of commands, available for editing TCS elements:

    - Trim: to trim selected TCS element s - Extend: to extend selected TCS elements - Erase: to erase selected TCS elements - Move: to move selected TCS elements - Offset: to parallel copying selected TCS elements - Join: to join selected TCS elements
