Our AVC Pasifika team Assoc. Prof. Hon. Luamanuvao Winnie Laban was appointed as Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) in November 2010. Victoria is the first NZ university to establish an AVC(Pasifika) role. Rochelle Nafatali joined Luamanuvao as her Executive Assistant in November 2010, and Ruth Toumu’a joined the team in March 2011 as Executive Officer to the AVC(P). The newest member of the team is Opeloge Ah Sam, Pasifika Music Coordinator, appointed December 2011.

Pasifika in NZ 2006: Pacific Peoples = 7.2% of NZ’s total population. 60% of those were NZ-

born.

48,408 or 18% of Pacific Peoples = 15 – 24 years. 60% of Pacific Peoples were under 30 years of age.

Projections for 2026: Pacific Peoples = just under 10% of NZ’s population (1 in 10 people), and the Pacific youth population will be 14.4% of NZ’s total youth population.

In 2001: 67% of Pacific people did not own their dwelling, compared to a 31% national average.

77% of Pacific Peoples earned under $50,000 p/a in 2006.

44% of Pacific Peoples had no qualifications in 2007, compared to a national average of 25%.

December 2009: Unemployment rates for Pacific Peoples = 14%, compared to 4.6% for the European ethnic group

The PSSP Working Group The Working Group comprised: - The PVCs (or nominated HoS representative) of all VUW faculties - A representative from Victoria International - Two representatives from the Central Service Units - A student representative from the Pasifika Students’ Council

The Working Group met three times (9 Aug, 30th Aug, 5 Sept) and developed the Plan.

PSSP targets

The PSSP is an action plan with three main areas of focus:

1) Pasifika Enrolment 2) Pasifika Retention and Qualification Completion 3) Pasifika Course Completion The Plan is designed to help Victoria to meet and exceed its Investment Plan targets for Pasifika students. These targets state that:

• 4.6% of enrolled students will be Pasifika • There will be a 62.8% Pasifika course completion rate • There will be a 54.2% Pasifika qualification completion rate

Aim

1.1 Broaden understanding amongst the Pasifika community &

families of benefits & opportunities of a University education (with

particular emphasis on approved subject areas in which Pasifika

are currently underrepresented).

1.2 Increase familiarisation with University at schools and include

family involvement.

1.3 Develop targeted Pasifika Communications & Marketing plan.

1.4 Increasing targeted Pasifika Scholarships.

1.5 Create a VUW Pasifika accommodation environment that will

2.3 Ensure timely, reliable Pasifika data RE successful course

completion and achievement is made available, from one source,

aligned with TEC reporting requirements.

2.4 Create VUW environment that is strongly inclusive of Pasifika.
