Unity College Faith School - Extracts from school prospectus

Welcome to Unity College

We never forget you’re trusting us with your child’s future. And for us that means not just academic achievement but happiness, confidence and personal development.

Education at Unity is about working with the whole child - he or she is more than simply a pupil. Like you, we want your child to be a supportive friend, a citizen of the local community and enjoy the freedom to learn unhindered.

We work hard to create an environment that encourages all of these things at the same time as embracing diversity and allowing children to realise their potential – no matter where they’re starting from.

We provide a Church of England education for those members of the community to whom faith is a vital part of their learning. However no one is excluded and everyone is invited to find out more about Christian faith and values.

We embrace everyone as a unique individual whatever their personal beliefs, culture or religion and consider it our duty to place your child at the centre of their own learning, helping them to achieve the best they can.

Sharon Goode, Principal

Meeting the needs of every child

If your child is facing challenging circumstances we’ll do our utmost to make sure they have the same opportunities as every other student and extra support – not just academically but in helping to build self-esteem and increase self-knowledge.

We provide a caring support network that joins together curriculum leaders, learning mentors and heads of house with SEN staff. By working in this way we can make sure that no one falls behind and that everyone reaches their individual potential.

We believe that your child’s happiness is a vital part of their education. That’s why we foster a caring and supportive atmosphere that aims to understand the ‘whole child’ and their unique situation. We aim to encourage and nurture students so that they can feel good about themselves and increase their self-confidence.

Learning Support Assistants are on hand to guide students during normal lessons and our Inclusion Faculty provides additional support outside the classroom. Every child has their own individual strengths and those with exceptional gifts and talents will also benefit from extra support and encouragement.

Kersaint Cobb Natural Flooring - Extracts from product catalogue

Walk across the World…

…The hills of New Zealand, the beaches of India, the crests of Asia, the deserts of Africa and South America…

These are just some of the places where the story of our beautiful natural floorcovering range begins.

Subtle shades and rich tones have been sourced from the finest producers across the world. Their natural surroundings provide the inspiration for our traditional and modern designs that will bring character and richness into your home.

Explore our brochure and discover a creative and diverse collection of natural fibre floorcoverings. From the softness and warmth of wool to the exciting textures of grass, jute, coir and sisal, our selection reflects the variety and beauty of the natural world in which we live…

Jute

Soft and golden, the slender jute fibres from Bangladesh & India love the sun and the humid times of the monsoon season. This is reflected in its appearance when woven into gorgeous silky flooring.

Choose from machine made flat woven designs for a simple smooth surface, or try our more luxurious handspun styles; with chunky weaves and rich with natural colour they really highlight its natural source.

You’ll love jute in the quieter areas of your home and experience a calming, soothing feel. What’s more you can relax with the knowledge that jute is recyclable & biodegradable.

Grasses

The pale green and yellow hues of our seagrass are a natural reflection of the Vietnamese landscape where it is grown and harvested. After reaching China it is spun and woven into the most natural flooring we offer. With a thin latex backing seagrass will live and breathe in your home, ageing beautifully as its colour tone changes throughout its life.

For even more freshness choose our fine seagrass products, the fibres of which are harvested when the plant is much younger providing a more intense green colour and a vivid way to bring the outside into your living space.

For something durable and darker try fitting mountain grass. Its firm bronzed fibres act as a great contrast and offer a hardwearing option for the busier areas in your home.

Communicare - Extracts from brochure

Communicare believe that quality of life for those with the most debilitating illnesses means care at home.

Quality isn’t just about providing medical support - it’s about empowering seriously ill patients to live as independently as possible and giving a voice to some of the most vulnerable people in society.

With skills and expertise matched by few other companies, Communicare only look after the most critically ill patients. Moreover, they have led the way in developing care for conditions previously considered only appropriate in a hospital or care home situation.

At the forefront of critical care, Communicare are changing perceptions about what is achievable for the most serious cases. They understand how to treat them in the best environment possible: the home, and excel in looking after patients with the following illnesses:

Multiple sclerosisMotor Neurone diseaseSpinal cord injuriesSpinal muscular atrophy and associated conditionsVentilator dependencyLearning disabilitiesSensory impairment

Communicare provide the kind of care that goes beyond medical needs and recognise the role that patients still have to play in the family and the community. They never forget that a patient is foremost a person and believe that “minimum care standards” are simply not an option.

80% of Communicare’s patients come to them after failed care.

What’s more their own record is 100% having not failed a single provision. By making Communicare first choice for these kinds of cases you’re more likely to improve the lives of patients through less disruption and a tailor made care team that really understands the specific needs of each individual. Not only that you’ll be able to forecast more reliably and avoid unplanned spending.

Every care team is hand-picked to meet the needs of each individual patient. This might seem excessive, but when you consider that most provisions fail due to a lack of understanding of the nature of the patient’s condition, then you’ll realise the value of this in delivering reliability and support over the long-term.

Taylor Ice Cream Machines - Targeted letter to Dairy farmers after an episode of The Apprentice

It’s so easy – even an apprentice can do it!

Dear (name)

If you watched last week’s Apprentice you probably smiled at Alan Sugar’s recruits attempting to develop an ice cream business on behalf of two dairy farmers.

But interestingly enough, even under difficult circumstances and with limited time available, the winning team still managed to turn in £1400 selling artisan ice cream at £1 per litre.

And if you look at the facts and figures behind the TV hype you’ll see that there really is a genuine opportunity to generate significant profits from this growing business.

When you consider that an average cost for producing high quality ice cream in just the same way, is just £3 per 5 litres, the profit margin for the winning team would have been a huge £560! That’s 40p for every litre sold! Can you think of a more profitable way to benefit from your excess milk?

With our artisan ice cream equipment and a small amount of training, it’s an opportunity that you could easily take advantage of.

With over 35 years experience in the development, distribution and aftercare of gourmet ice-cream equipment, we can help you create your own ice cream business. We’ll advise you on the equipment you need as well as install and maintain it. What’s more we’ll show you how to produce high quality gourmet ice-cream that’s just irresistible.

In addition we can help you to market it more effectively and continue generating sales long after Alan’s last candidate has been given their marching orders.

So if you want to find out more about how artisan ice-cream could add to your income, then please call us to arrange for a FREE, no-obligation consultation or visit our website on www.taylor-company.co.uk/artisan.

Geosynthetics - Extracts from technical literature

Rock Box gabions and mattresses provide a robust and attractive solution for erosion control, protection and retaining structure problems. Strong, stable and flexible, Geosynthetics’ Rock Box gives you exceptional performance in these demanding situations.

Heavily galvanised woven wire and a durable construction make Geosynthetics’ Rock Box ideal for:

• Retaining walls• River training• Erosion Control• Soil conservation• Marinas and seashore protection• Landscaping• Structure protection• Canal, river and dam lining• Flood protection.

Filled with local stone they can easily blend in with the local surroundings. Unlike concrete or other solid structures, Rock Box gabions and mattresses allow vegetation to flourish. This gives an attractive appearance that reduces the visible impact of the structure and enhances the natural landscape.

AestheticsWhen used for walls the rigid construction provides straight edges and clean outlines for a neat ordered appearance. For a more natural situation planting can be encouraged to allow them to blend in with the local environment.FlexibilityBecause of their ability to settle without fracture, they are ideal for constructing on unstable ground. This ability is even more important in fast moving water situations where other solutions could be undermined.Strength and stabilityThe strength and flexibility of the steel wire construction enables Rock Box gabions and mattresses to easily withstand and absorb the forces of generated by retained earth or flowing water. And because every join is twisted together three times this also gives them excellent rigidity resulting in long-term stability.Corrosion resistanceEvery surface of the steel wire construction is heavily galvanised to BSEN ISO 10244-2, giving the zinc coating an average of 40 years life in exposed situations. What’s more as acid rain levels continue to decline this lifespan is expected to increase. This tough protective coating is achieved by total immersion of the steel into molten zinc, which is metallurgically bonded to the steel. This process also protects the steel from corrosion even when the galvanising becomes chipped or scratched.DurabilityThe combination of strength, stability, flexibility and corrosion resistance makes Rock Box gabions and mattresses extremely durable, giving you the reassurance of long-term performance Moreover its efficiency increases over time as the voids are filled with soil or silt, and this increases further still when vegetation becomes established.DrainageThe design of Geosynthetics Rock Box gabions and mattresses makes the naturally free draining to further improve performance an avoid rainwater build-up.Cost effectiveRock Box gabions and mattresses have been developed to provide an economical answer to erosion control, protection and retaining. Here are some of the key features that help you to save money:

• Low maintenance• Easy to construct on site• Easily assembled with non-skilled labour• Minimal preparation required for foundations• No need for additional, costly drainage systems• Easy to handle and transport

New applications for gabions and mattresses are regularly developed, increasing the versatility of this product. With our experience across a wide range of installations, we can provide expert advice on how to achieve the most cost-effective and efficient solution using Rock Box.

Magazine article

Give us this day

I'd always wanted one, but could never seem to justify the expense along with all the other outgoings. So when my sister offered to buy me a breadmaker for my birthday I

said yes (perhaps a little too quickly) Well, I figured she couldn't afford the holiday home in France.

I'm not one for kitchen gadgets. I can't stand all those things you see in the

Innovations catalogue: thimble size processors to chop a teaspoon of parsley or a plastic cow to tell you if your milk has gone off.

But I have two problems when it comes to bread.

Firstly I like bread. And when I say bread I mean bread. Not those white pasty squares

with a two-week shelf life, and definitely not those pre-baked crusts with hot air in the middle that some restaurants like to serve in a wicker basket with mean little packs of

rock-hard butter.

Whether it's a chunky corner of crusty white bread with really good cheddar and astringent pickle, or a thin slice of dense malted brown and cured herrings, it doesn't

really matter. As long as it's something that tastes and smells like it's been cared about rather than something from a factory.

The second problem is money (or not enough of it); all this handcrafted slow-food

carries a premium. And, as in most families there are other priorities for the household income, so the daily bread normally ends up as a supermarket loaf (and I'm sorry

Tesco and Sainsbury's but 'Finest' and 'Taste the difference' seem more an exercise in raising margins than raising quality)

I've tried making bread at home with varying results, from indifferent to inedible. I can

knock out pastry without thinking about it but I must have missed out on the kneading gene. So the idea of effortlessly throwing in a few ingredients and pressing a button

before going to bed then waking up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread had appealed for some time...

Extracts from an article in a London Hotel’s in-house magazine

Premium Bond

Said to have more "By Royal Appointment" awards than any other street in London, Bond Street lives up to its reputation as the most exclusive thoroughfare in the capital.

From an unlikely beginning as a swampy area close to a plague pit, the street was

named after Sir Thomas Bond the financial controller at the court of King Charles 1 in the 17th century. But it was only in the 1850's that Bond Street got into its stride as the

place for high society to practice its retail therapy - in that sense little has changed.

I always like to start from the Oxford Street end to give you that sense of leaving the high street behind for something a little more rarefied. To some extent you leave the

crowd behind too (and even if it's busy you're more likely to be squeezing past a Loius Vuitton handbag than a rucksack)

If there is such a thing as High Fashion then Bond Street is its peak. Where else in the

UK outside of a department store would you find Prada rubbing shoulders with Alexander Mc Queen or Yves St Laurent within a stones throw of Chanel? Add to that

Armani, Donna Karan, D & G and Gucci and you can understand why it's the favourite destination for the capital's well-heeled. But as well as these bastions of the fashion

establishment there's still room for more edgier, offbeat designers. It's labels like the quirky Miu Miu or the outrageous couture of Etro that rescue Bond Street from catwalk

convention.

Another thing that elevates Bond Street to its special status and prevents it from becoming yet another "retail experience" is the collection of fine art galleries and

auction houses that sit discretely between the mannequined windows. Sothebys is of course one of the most famous, but what's not as well known is that inside you'll find a

wonderful café. Small but elegant, it's the perfect place for a late breakfast when you're beginning to flag (I recommend the wonderfully creamy scrambled eggs...
