Abstract

Page 11: Design Thinking For Cultural Tourism: Wuxi Workshop 1

This workshop was a unique opportunity to demonstrate the value of shared knowledge and lived experiences between two groups from different education backgrounds and mixed professional fields, architecture and design students.

Throughout two weeks the group of students visited 3 different sites — Wuxi, Suzhou and Shanghai — each of them with very old sites that were, until a few years ago, at an abandoned status, with only a few residents remaining or half destroyed without any maintenance at all... however they all have been renovated, some following the original patents and others recreating new ones according to the new commercial trends. The aim was to raise awareness within the population regarding the historic interests of these places and link them with the current life style!

The "concept" mostly used was to convert the old houses into traditional goods commercial shops or bars in a "copy/paste" fashion that only showed a disorganized area without any personality or identity! This is spread all over china, creating open commercial streets with same “faces”, where there is no reason to visit more than once.

The aim of this research and study was to rethink the present situation, explore what’s already been done and create concepts which express a better integration in today's communities’ lifestyle, bring a strong identity and personality

emphasizing the history of those places, buildings that play with the passing of times and add value to a community. This is the Design Thinking for Cultural Tourism concept!

It was summer time and all universities campuses were on holidays except for a small group of 20 students and 4 professors. And though conditions were extremely hot, everyone made a tremendous effort, keeping themselves motivated to face the full working days ahead while creating a happy and enjoyable atmosphere.

A lot of emotions were gained through these weeks’ experiences! This is the spirit, working process and results we want to bring to future exchange workshops, therefore I want, on behalf of all professors, to express my deepest appreciation and care for the valuable time, effort and attitude spent by this group of students.

This book is the reward for such behavior, a record for their future professional lives!

I look for the next workshop - Design Thinking for Cultural Tourism II

Introduction

Page 15: Design Thinking For Cultural Tourism: Wuxi Workshop 1

Interchange is a project developed between the Schools of Design of Jiangnan University (JNU) and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ Design Course) in Macao. Jiangnan University School of Design accumulated 50 years of experience in teaching design, while the School of Design at the University of Saint Joseph is a new institution inspired by East and West culture, fostering dynamic and creative concepts. This workshop promoted cross-cultural and multidisciplinary dialogue, in search for a new approach to research and design methods. We are expecting this will bring out a fascinating and outstanding work.

Over the last 5-years the Department of Architecture and Environment Art School of Design, Jiangnan University has exchange activities and research, on Macao heritage conservation and urban rehabilitation, established with several academic and professional institutions in Macao. The achievements of the “Wuxi-Macao 2011” workshop will form a good basis for further international cooperation, an opportunity which both institutions wish to continue.

The Interchange "Wuxi-Macao 2011” was held from the 1st to the 15th of July 2011, in which participated different groups

from the two universities. From USJ participated 1 professor and 6 design students. From JNU participated 2 professors and 14 students. They work in the rehabilitation project of San-Li-Bridge Cathedral historic site in Wuxi. The main contribution from the workshop is to learn on Wuxi history, tradition, to research on existing problems on dilapidated historic areas, and to find urban design solutions for adding value and the historical identity in the contemporary urban context.

The results obtained from the workshop are not just another academic experiment, but its conclusions could be submitted to Wuxi Government and hopefully partly implemented on site.

The strategic objective of this project is also to create an interest group that can act as a central point for extending knowledge and transferring expertise in the field of creative design, architecture conservation, urban rehabilitation and management of East- West Heritage legacy in Asia. This could be achieved through design-led research and by promoting activities– strengthening the academic collaboration between Wuxi and Macao.

and strengthen the cohesion as a community that contributed for the wealthy diversity for Wuxi social and cultural fabric. The Cathedral neighborhood represents an important part of Wuxi tangible and intangible historical legacy, which has great cultural and tourist value. Damaging will be losing part of Jiangnam History.

Threatened with the fast economic boom of recent years, the cathedral and the adjacent areas is under threat by the overall urban development with the concentration of high rise residential towers. Old buildings and communities, part of our long history, could disappear. This workshop identified the area as an important city centre, a “nucleus” which can create synergies and encourage the cultural, social, and economic integration due to its great cultural, historic and tourist values.

San-Li-Bridge Cathedral site and surroundings could be rehabilitated by designing a multi-use area and by improving existing conditions of valuable buildings in the community, thus enhancing its historic and cultural legacy. The multidisciplinary design teams are constituted by JNU students of architecture, industrial design, visual communication design, and public art, and from USJ Design School. It was required that each design team will develop high quality design plans and models taking in to account the site history, landscape and society backgrounds

Situated in the south of Jiangsu Province, Wuxi is a famous cultural city with a history of over 3,000 years. the original site of the Wu Culture, which has dominated the region of Yangtze River South. The Grand Canal passes through the centre of city creating a network of water alleys and riverside buildings which was typical of Jiangnan's cities. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Wuxi used to be the famous agricultural centre with a significant national rice market. Later became a hub of the textile industry and was called the cradle of national industry and commerce.Neighborhood

Due to its good location and its historic background, Wuxi has more opportunities to exchange with different cultures. San-Li-Bridge Cathedral is a good case study. Located in Minzhu Street, Beitang District, San-Li-Bridge Cathedral is one of the biggest Catholic churches in Jiangsu Province, reflecting the mixed cultural influence by Chinese, Italian and French. The Cathedral was firstly built in 1640 and repaired and reconstructed respectively in 1892 and 1990. The surroundings buildings are 1 or 2 floors brick-wooden local style dwellings. The great majority of the local residents in the church neighborhood and some fishermen living on boats constitute the Catholic community of Wuxi that lived and worked here for centuries. Like during the 1000 years of Middle Ages period in Europe 1000, this community was built around the cathedral, from there was enrich its cultural identity

The project will investigate the history of the Wuxi Catholic Church historic site, analyze its topography, use, streetscape and architectural character, as well as assess its overall development and relationships within the town. The particular strengths and weaknesses of the area should be discussed and recommendations made for the enhancement of the character and value of the area.

The proposed/final concepts that will be developed should serve as tools that integrate with the local community and emphasize the historic background of Wuxi.

This workshop activity includes lectures, field survey, historical research, discussion, design project and modeling. Workshop activities were developed in two axis.

The first is based on a theoretical approach with lectures and research. Topics covered include church design, restoration and preservation techniques, historical building materials, adaptive use of historic buildings and monuments, and new directions for the protection of urban heritage. The second one is instead on an applicative approach to engage participants on the sites of project so that they may experience first-hand existing problems and intend to find the best practical solutions.

The two axis can be expressed as training for participants (the theoretical one) and research and improving knowledge on field for the second, working directly in Wuxi historical sites.

The main aim of the workshop is to provide to all participants an interdisciplinary forum for discussing various ways to deal with rehabilitation and improvement on built environment. The results could contribute for enhancing the city’s management of cultural heritage and to create a more meaningful sense of social community and urban identity.

This workshop is devoted to design methodologies and how to answer challenges created by emerging problems related with urban development and heritage sites protection. To learn how to provide a positive social and urban use promoting their historical, artistic, and cultural importance. During the workshop urban public spaces and facilities are encouraged to be designed in such a way that they could improve the qualities of a particular urban environment increasing its chances of survival as well as promoting their social and economic development.

On December 1, 1594, Alessandro Valignano SJ founded the University College of Saint Paul in Macau, the first Western university in East Asia. The University was succeeded in the middle of the 18th century by the Royal Seminary of Saint Joseph, which, like Saint Paul, educated ecclesiastical and lay students. Saint Joseph was discontinued as a place of learning in the late 1960s, mostly due to the political uncertainties of the times. The students were sent to institutions of higher learning in other places, especially in Portugal.

In the 1990s, the then President of the Portuguese Republic, Mário Soares, asked the Rector of the Catholic University of Portugal to re-establish the university in Macau. This happened in 1996 through the Catholic Foundation for Higher Education, created for this purpose and constituted by the Diocese of Macau and the Catholic University of Portugal. The Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, the Magnum Chancellor of the Catholic University of Portugal, assumed the Chancellorship of the university in Macau.

On December 1, 2009, exact ly 415 years af ter the establishment of Saint Paul, the university re-assumed an earlier designation and became the University of Saint Joseph (Executive Order Nº 64/2009).

The Saint Joseph Academic Press was established to publish and disseminate the University’s academic research and cultural contributions.

Tthe USJ Design Course prepares designers to become creative leaders through an innovative curriculum that emphasizes experimentation. We motivate constant rethinking of the way users live with existent objects and encourage students to further challenge the boundaries between human needs, technology and manufacturing processes. We focus on developing a human and socially-open individually cooperative methodology. In effect, the methodology is strengthened by communication through projects, and continuous analysis of market realities to better implement new life concepts.

At USJ Design Course, we help students realize their ideas, regardless of their future professional field; it is their outstanding capacity for innovation that makes them leaders.

Filipe Bragança

The philosophy behind the Design Program is inspired by the Renascence period, where masters from different fields gathered together with their pupils to go through a work in process based on experimentation and knowledge exchanges.

Design is undertaken as an interdisciplinary program where a group of professional designers guide and lead the students through assignments and projects from initial conceptual ideas to the final product.

We live in a world in which society constantly faces new challenges. Due to financial crises, stress levels are high and people must learn to keep moving to create new social changes, new digital technologies and new communicating changes. The need to rethink the way products are used and how new materials can be incorporated for a sustainable environmental system is at its peak. It is the designer’s responsibility to create a new life style for the changes we seek in the 21st century.

1 The lack of church atmohsphere and harmony with surrounding environment2 Historical context surrounding the loss of3 Lack of public space and rest areas4 Road is too narrow, confusing people and vehicles5 Lack of basic public tools (W.C., rubbish can, etc.)

The land is located in Wuxi city Beitang District, adjacent to the Grande Canale and Wuxi branch, the landscape is superexcellent.

The area with the development of the city and surrounding the development of highrise building, the church gradually lost, while landscape vision has been covered, now no longer difficult to appear before a few kilometers away can see the church tower cross spectacles. At the same time, surrounding a large residential buildings facing demolition, it not only destroys itself in balance with the texture of the church itself, also brought adverse effect, peripheral regions according to the existing plan will be fully taken into high-rise residential and commercial district. Therefore, to place protection be imperative.
