What Design Actually Is ?
Design is a process of converting information
that characterize the needs and requirement for
a product.
Successful Design relies on closer co-operationbetween design, engineering, manufacturing and
planning than ever before.

Design is
-an art, not science
>Problem solving, decision,
Applying science.-Creativity & Imagination
v/s Heuristic search.
-Directing, leading &
Organizing.
>Dealing with people andteambuilding.
>Negotiating to achieve satisfactory
solution & optimizing.
>Foresight towards production, assembly, testing
and other processes.
>Considering the Bottom Line of Costs and Profits.
>Satisfying the needs and satisfying the customers.
>Ethical and Professional Conduct.

DESIGN PROCESS
>System, Subsystem and Component Design
>Sequential and Iterative Process.
>Starts and Ends with the customer.
>Comparison and contrast to scientific methodwhich include :
1.Need 2.Concepts 3.Feasibility
4.Produce 5.Sell
6.Time and Cost are Key Factors.
>Process of converting information ThatCharacterizes the needs and requirement
Product into knowledge about the product
and its implied processes.

MOOD BOARD
Mood Board is the stepping stone in the design
process. After the market research we make
particular mood board in order to accentuate our
ideations which helps us to create Initial
Sketches.

INITIAL SKETCHES
Initial Sketches are Backbone of Every design.Based on these sketches; final design of the
vehicle comes into execution.

HAND RENDERING
Hand rendering deals with color scheme of the
car whether it is interior or exterior.
Generally we use alcohol markers for quick hand
rendering but in actual every designer has its
own preferences and techniques. Here are some
hand renderings done with pencil colors and
alcohol markers for your reference.

2D DRAWINGS IN CAD
Generally we Refine the sketches in 2D CAD soft wares.
This helps us to understand the fundamental perspective an
basic dimensions of the vehicle.
Software's used in 2D Refining
>AUTOCAD >3ds MAX >AUTODESK ALIAS
>SOLIDWORKS >AUTODESK INVENTOR >RHINOCEROS

3D MODELLING
3D Model of an sketch can be made using CAD
Software's: Alias ,Solid works ,Catia, ProE.
These are Class B surfacing Software's. For
class A Surfacing i.e. for higher precision 3D
models we use Think3, Autodesk Alias and 3Ds
Max.

DIGITAL RENDERING
Digital rendering refers to the color scheme
chosen for the 3d model which is rendered
according to the lighting conditions (i.e. light
falling from a particular source) and is taken
into consideration.
SOFTWARES USED FOR RENDERING:>Photoshop >Blender
>Autodesk Alias >3Ds Max

CLAY MODELING
when the execution of 3D model and rendering has
been accomplished then we prepare scale model of
the ratio 4:1 then 1:1 which is the actual
replica of the prototype. Clay modeling is
dependent on the core expertise of the clay
modeler and hence its an essential step in the
Hierarchy of the Design Process.
4:1 CLAY MODEL

STATIC PROTOTYPE
Static Prototype is very much similar to the
Working Prototype except it does not have a
drive train in order to propel it. Static
prototype is only used for design study and to
get an clear idea of manufacturing processes
used to manufacture the same.

WORKING PROTOTYPEWorking Prototype is the sibling of the
production model. It has drive train too and all the mechanical
design aesthetics, interior layout and overall
look of the car is reviewed using working
prototype. The prototype is tested till all theproblems has been rectified to the fullest
satisfaction of the companys standard.

FINAL PRODUCT
It usually takes 3-5 years for a company to
bring a concept into actual production. After
rigorous design exercise to testing of the
prototype it requires quality manpower to get
engrossed in tons of hard work along with money.

General Design
Considerations
>Exterior
>Interior
>Safety
EXTERIORExterior of the car should be able to communicate with
people. Design should be expressive and should never be
conservative at any front.
>Designer should know the design language or the designheritage of a particular company.
For e.g. Buick car company has its own theme for
designing cars. They use bold lines at the front
and smooth splined surface at the side and rearas their Design language.

Interior
1.Occupant Packaging It depends upon workspace
anthropometry which includes:
-Conventional Static Measurements: These
measurements are performed on human body in
rigid and standardized position.
-Functional Task Oriented Measurements: These
measurements are taken with human body at work
,in motion or in workspace attitude.

2. VISUAL ASPECTS:
The Cars interior should visually attract the
customers and the ambience of the cabin should
be imposing and on the other hand it should beergonomically well sorted and should feel
elegant too.
3.Seat Design: The seats of the vehicle shouldbe well contoured in order to provide max
comfort to the driver and the passengers.

4.DESIGN AND SYMBOL FOR AUTOMOBILE CONTROL AND
DISPLAY:
The display of the Gauges should be easy to
read. The controls of the vehicle should be
nimble enough to handle hours of reckless
driving. The buttons used for SAT NAV and media
interface should be ergonomically placed.
SAFETYSafety of the vehicle should be taken into primeconsideration. Safe design is referred to those
designs which compromise their body shells at
the time of impact instead of injuring
passengers.

Design Tips For Achieving Optimum safety
in designing a car:
1.Use energy absorbing materials in collapsible
crash structures.
2.For lightweight vehicles use a stressed over
lightweight core material.3.Triangulate the driver Safety Cell to
prevent collapse.
4.Use clear windscreen or bodywork for optimum
vision.
5.Keep the fuel source away from the occupantsas well as batteries in hybrid cars which
would result in increased safety standards.
6.Never compromise on safety always use top
quality materials.

ON THE WHOLE:1.Design specification should be taken into considerations.
2.Selecting product ideas.3.Acquire and apply technical knowledge.
4.Priortize Design Goals and continue to refine.
5.Preliminary requirement list.
6.Cost Target and budget.
7.Design Embodiedment:-It starts from the concept and
develops the definite layout of the project.
-Evaluate against technical economic criteria.
-Preliminary layout
-Checking for errors and disturbing elements.
CHECKLIST FOR DESIGN EMBODIEDMENT INCLUDES:
>Function >Working principle >Layout
>Safety >Ergonomics >Production
>Assembly >Transport >Recycling
>Maintenance >cost >Quality Control

8.Prepare production document:
-Elaborate Detailed drawings and parts.
-Complete production, assembly, transport and
operating instructions.
-Checking all Documents.
9.Design Review:
-Review and redesign focuses on achieving the
performance, predictability, reliability, andcost objectives.
-Competitive benchmarking.
-Reverse Engineering of competitors products.
EMBODIED DESIGN IS CHARACTERIZED BY REPESTED
DELIBERATION AND VERIFICATION. THIS REQUIRES
APPROACH THAT IS PROGRESSIVE AS WELL AS
ITERATIVE
