NOTES: FINISHES
General Notes - Finishes
A. Acceptable finishes are indicated. Other locally available low-maintenance
surfaces may be used.
B. Provide base as appropriate for flooring material.
C. Acous*cal ceiling *le is 2 x 2, typical.
D. Provide vinyl-coated grid at loca*ons of vinyl-coated ceiling *le.
E. Provide high-durability, moisture-resistant, washable paint at GWB ceilings.
F. Consider the use of large tackable wall surfaces as tackboards in instruc*onal
areas, especially Art, Neighborhood, and CTE/Compu*ng Center spaces.
G. Provide acous*cal wall treatment as appropriate for all open, tall and/or noise
-producing spaces.
H. Provide acous*c seal at all doors in walls with a required STC ra*ng.
I. All ceiling heights indicated are minimum requirements. Higher ceilings may
be provided for acous*cal or aesthe*c reasons.
J. Terrazzo may be used as a floor finish in high traffic areas if project can bear
the addi*onal cost of this long-las*ng, durable material.
K. Use of carpet flooring must be specifically reviewed and approved by DoDEA
area personnel.
Schedule Notes – Finishes
1. Wall finish must be capable of enduring ball strikes. Impact-resistant (IR) GWB
or perforated IR-GWB may be used above 10’-0” (1830mm) AFF, but 2-layers
with minimum thickness of 5/8” are required.
2. Provide appropriate acous*cal treatments for music and performance spaces.
3. Perimeter walls of the en*re music suite and the division of the instruc*onal
spaces (band room, keyboard lab, choral room, and prac*ce rooms) shall be
STC-60. Other walls within the suite may be STC-45.
4. Acous*c wall treatment must be capable of enduring ball strikes.
5. Provide floor finishes that will not build up a sta*c charge in the OT/PT area,
Technology Service Center, LAN closets, and CTE/Computing Center spaces
where students may be working with computer components.
6. Records room shall be minimum 1-hour fire rated construc*on.
7. Acous*cal ceiling *les may be provided in Auxiliary Gym if it will not be used
for ball sports.
8. The floor in the tatami room is raised 12” and shall have tatami mats as the
floor finish. If the kitcheneFe is also provided, it will not be raised and will
have appropriate floor finishes.
9. All surfaces should be easily sani*zed and long wearing.
10. Sound-rated doors with the same ra*ng as the wall.
11. Provide ceiling height of 16’ – 24’ as appropriate for the acous*cs of the
room.
12. Acid resistant flooring.
13. Provide finishes in the serving line similar to the dining area.
14. Refrigerator/freezer is a built-in equipment item with wall and ceiling finishes
by the manufacturer. Floor finishes may be a part of this built-in equipment
or match the flooring material in the food prepara*on area.
15. Provide finishes and sound ra*ng as appropriate for the individual student
ac*vity areas within the CTE/Computing Center spaces. Refer to the specific
requirements for spaces such as Video Communica*ons, Family Consumer
Science and Culinary Arts.
16. Provide acous*cal treatment within this space and sound-ra*ng for the
perimeter walls as required for the containment of the decibel levels of the
specific firing range training equipment.
17. Use of area rugs in educa*onal spaces is encouraged to promote floor-based
ac*vi*es and as a means for sound aFenua*on within these spaces. Use of
carpet flooring can be considered, but must be specifically reviewed and
approved by DoDEA area personnel. Documenta*on must be provided if
there is a belief that carpet is needed for sound aFenua*on. Documenta*on
and jus*fica*on must be provided to DoDEA Area personnel that not only
substan*ates aFenua*on effec*veness but also addresses exis*ng concerns
about indoor air quality rela*ve to sanita*on/cleaning and mold/mildew
development.

General Notes – Built-in Items and Special Systems
A. In order to ensure the future flexibility of the student and staff spaces within
the building, the use of furniture or equipment to meet the work surface or
storage needs is encouraged. Built-in casework and shelving should be
minimized.
B. All windows in spaces that are occupied on a regular basis shall receive shades
or blinds. The food service area, supply room, corridors, stairways, public
restrooms, and mechanical/electrical rooms do not require them.
C. Minimum size for tackboards & markerboards is 4’x4’. The preferred size is
4’x6’ or 4’x8’ if space permits.
D. All sinks shall have wall mounted paper towel and soap dispensers.
Coordinate with plumbing schedule. Coordinate with facility manager to
provide accessories compa4ble with supplies currently being purchased.
E. Refer to Space Types and Requirements sec4on of this document for further
informa4on on student coat storage, cubbies, and lockers within the facility.
F. Display cases installed at various loca4ons around the facility are encouraged
for the viewing of awards, pictures, student work, and items related to the
course of study. These items should be lockable and observable from the
corridors or commons areas of the building and could also be used to feature
different departments.
Schedule Notes – Built-in Items and Special Systems
1. A por4on of this counter shall be at appropriate height for grades K-3 at
elementary schools and meet accessibility requirements at all loca4ons.
2. Lockable medicine cabinet.
3. Book shelves - varying heights for stacks; 42"h in center; 60"h - 84”h at
perimeter (depending on grade level).
4. Provide lockable storage, including one ven4lated cabinet for paints and
thinners.
5. Provide large, electrically operated, projec4on screen (minimum 10’ x 10’)
with ceiling mounted or mobile projector (FF&E).
6. Sliding markerboard, one panel with permanent staff markings.
7. Personal Emergency Aler4ng Sta4on (PEAS), controls for PA, intercom, clock
and bell systems, monitor for security system.
8. Provide scoreboards in the Gymnasium at the middle schools and high
schools.
9. Provide ceiling hook (two loca4ons preferred for flexibility in arranging the
room).
10. Provide lockable cabinets for storage of computer equipment.
11. Provide one-way glass to view OT/PT from observa4on room.
12. Provide cage par44ons and/or high-density storage, as required.
13. Built-in base cabinets with counter area for the circula4on desk.
14. Built-in shelving on one wall only, to provide space for storage of large items
such as a wheelchair.
15. All built-in and special system requirements for the Food Service area to be
coordinated and designed by food service consultant.
16. Cabinets for instruments and other class materials.
17. Provide catwalk above stage. Stage should be approximately 40”high.
18. Protect all devices from ball strikes.
19. Provide work surface for the repair/tes4ng of computer equipment.
20. Provide large work counter (standing height) in the middle of the space for
the sor4ng of materials.
21. Provide dishwasher and small range and hood in neighborhoods serving Pre-K
and Kindergarten students.
22. Provide built-in items and special systems as appropriate for the individual
student ac4vity areas within the CTE/Computing Center spaces. Refer to the
specific requirements for spaces such as Video Communica4ons, Family
Consumer Science and Culinary Arts.

DESIGN GUIDELINES NOTES: LOOSE FURNITURE
AND EQUIPMENT (FF&E)
General Notes – Loose Furniture and Equipment (FF&E)
A. In order to ensure the future flexibility of the student and staff spaces within
the building, the use of furniture or equipment to meet the work surface or
storage needs is encouraged. Built-in casework and shelving should be
minimized.
B. All furniture must meet local fire safety quality standards.
Schedule Notes – Loose Furniture and Equipment (FF&E)
1. Provide cots and small bedside tables.
2. Assis/ve technology devices (sound field system) and audiometric booth may
be required for Hearing Impaired, Speech and/or Learning Impaired
programs. Coordinate with special educa/on department.
3. Wheelchair, refrigerator with ice maker (lockable), cubicle curtains, and
physician's scale (all FF&E).
4. Commercial washer and dryer. Provide door clearances leading to the
Laundry room from the exterior for the installa/on of this large equipment.
5. Coordinate with special educa/on instructor for appropriate dining room,
living room, and bedroom furniture to be provided in home living area.
6. Provide adjustable height changing table (freestanding, not wall mounted) in
Pre-school Services for Children with Disabili/es (PSCD) and Learning Impaired
Severe instruc/onal areas.
7. Work bench.
8. Provide furniture for the broadcast of television programs and other
associated planning and storage requirements.
9. Provide photo backdrop and laminator.
10. Shelving, min 7' stacking height. Ensure that shelving does not interfere with
18” clearance for sprinkler heads. Ensure shelving is secured to floor and/or
walls.
11. Lounge furniture.
12. Mail boxes. Provide counter or table for sor/ng mail.
13. Stackable chairs.
14. Provide demonstra/on table in instruc/onal area.
15. Provide kiln. The kiln is considered FF&E. Provide proper electrical
connec/ons. Kiln should be connected with a plug, not hard-wired.
NOTES: LOOSE FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT (FF&E)
16. All FF&E requirements for the Food Service area to be coordinated and
designed by food service consultant.
17. Tables for Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) or keyboard sta/ons.
18. Provide flexible furniture that can be used for dining and assembly purposes.
All items should be easily stored.
19. Specialty storage for armory, rifle racks, etc.
20. Provide refrigerator in Neighborhoods serving Pre-K and Kindergarten
students.
21. Provide icemaker in Training Room.
22. Provide finishes and sound ra/ng as appropriate for the individual student
ac/vity areas within the CTE/Computing Center spaces. Refer to the specific
requirements for spaces such as Video Communica/ons, Family Consumer
Science and Culinary Arts.

General Notes – Mechanical/Plumbing/Electrical/Communica7ons
A. Coordinate dishwasher and washer/dryer loca�ons with Built-in Items and Special
Systems Schedule and Loose Furniture and Equipment Schedule.
B. Provide tamper-resistant covers for thermostats and other wall-mounted devices
located in public areas.
C. Provide dedicated HVAC system in the administra�ve suite if this space will con�nue to
be used when school is not in session.
D. Provide power for appliances and equipment listed in Built-in Items and Special
Systems Schedule and Loose Furniture and Equipment Schedule.
E. Emergency ligh�ng and exit ligh�ng shall be provided throughout, as required by code.
F. General purpose electrical outlets shall be provided throughout, as required by the
code.
G. One LAN drop consists of one duplex data receptacle and two duplex power
receptacles.

1. Provide emergency shut-off for all HVAC equipment.
2. Provide quench sink for use in stopping firing process.
3. Vent Kiln to the exterior. Interlock supply and return air in kiln room.
4. Refer to Space Types and Requirements sec�on for informa�on on restrooms in the
Neighborhood.
5. Provide icemaker and dishwasher connec�ons in Neighborhoods serving Pre-K and
Kindergarten students.
6. All Mechanical and Plumbing requirements for the Food Service area to be coordinated
and designed by food service consultant.
7. Protect all devices from ball strikes.
