How do manufactured stone and natural stone differ?Ply Gem Stone is cast from molds of real stone. This process makes the stone lighter in weight than natural stone. With natural stone, wall ties and footings are oftentimes required, which, in turn, can increase installation cost and difficulty.

What are the benefits of using manufactured stone?There are many benefits to using Ply Gem Stone for your next project. Manufactured stone’s lightweight properties eliminate the need for wall ties or footings. In addition, manufactured stone is about one-third to one-half the cost of natural stone and has a 2% waste factor versus an average of 10% with natural stone.

Where can Ply Gem Stone be installed?With proper preparation, Ply Gem Stone can be installed to almost any structurally sound surface. Our manufactured stone is ideal for indoor and outdoor applications, buildings of all sizes, commercial or residential. We invite you to visit plygemstone.com for installation ideas.

Who can install Ply Gem Stone? Almost anyone can install our lightweight Ply Gem Stone products. We do, however, recommend a fundamental understanding of stone masonry for the best result. Please follow our installation recommendations, or contact your Ply Gem Stone representative with any questions.

How does Ply Gem Stone hold up to freeze/thaw cycles?Ply Gem Stone products are tested for freeze/thaw durability. We recommend that you incorporate adequate building practices, including proper flashing and water diversion techniques to help ensure a successful installation and long-lasting result.

How much does manufactured stone weigh?Ply Gem Stone recommends that you estimate approximately 10-12 lbs. per square foot. Our manufactured stone qualifies as an adhered veneer because it weighs less than 15 lbs. per square foot.

Will Ply Gem Stone fade?Ply Gem Stone blends the base color throughout with permanent mineral oxide pigments applied and absorbed when the veneer is cast. The color becomes an integral part of the veneer and, similar to natural stone, there are minimal noticeable color changes after years of weathering, similar to natural stone.

How important is installation?How your finished stone veneer project ultimately looks is dictated by a number of factors, including how well it is installed. With Ply Gem Stone, careful consideration should be given to the type of profile and color selected, the stone pattern as it is installed, and the type of grout technique used. Before starting a project, we recommend creating a sample board with the look you desire.

How can I contact a professional mason?Your area Ply Gem Stone distributor can recommend local masons who are familiar with our product lines and installation processes.

Can Ply Gem Stone be installed near water?We do not recommend Ply Gem Stone for use below the water line in a pool, fountain, or below grade. We recommend applying a high-quality penetrating and breathable sealer that is either silane or siloxane-based in areas where the stone may be subject to water.

What is the thickness of Ply Gem Stone?Depending on the texture, most stone types are 1.25" to 2" in thickness.

What is the R-Value of Ply Gem Stone?The average R-Value of Ply Gem Stone is 0.41 per inch of thickness.

How is Ply Gem Stone cleaned?We recommend you try a simple soft bristle brush to remove dirt or other debris. If necessary, try a granulated mild type of detergent mixed with water or a solution of (no more than) one part white vinegar to five parts water. Rinse with clean water to remove any cleaning solution that might remain on the surface. DO NOT use wire brushes, acid cleaners, power washers, bleach, paint remover, or any other type of concrete cleaner.

Can Ply Gem Stone be sealed?Sealing Ply Gem Stone is not required; however, a sealer will provide added protection and will create a surface that is easier to clean. If you decide to seal your stone veneer, use only a silane or siloxane-based penetrating, breathable masonry sealer. Please note that you should test a small area beforehand because a sealer may affect stone color.

Are movement joints required for Ply Gem Stone?Expansion joints usually pass completely through a wall. Control joints are often placed on the surface of the wall and relieve strain on the skin of the wall. Terminate the veneer installation where control and expansion joints occur in the substrate. Do not span these joints with veneer because this will lead to cracking. Expansion joints in a building must be specified by the architect or engineer. The architect or engineer should consider the ASTM C 1063 control joint requirements when determining the location of control joints on any structure. The weakest point on a wall is usually immediately above and below the penetrations.

How is Ply Gem Stone installed when there is an expansion joint?You will need to treat each section as its own installation. Do not span movement joints with the veneer.

What is Ply Gem Stone’s recommendation for flashing around windows and doors?To maintain the weather-resistance of the exterior wall on which the stone products are installed, a firm and corrosion-resistant flashing should be installed at all penetrations and terminations of the veneer cladding. There should also be a means of drainage incorporated. Flashing type and locations will need to fall within accordance with the requirements of the applicable code. Please refer to ASTM E2112

or any information from your window or door manufacturer.

Does Ply Gem Stone need a ledge detail at the bottom for structural support or can it hang freely?No footings or support ledges are required. The product is an adhered veneer and is supported on the wall by the bond of the mortar to the stone and scratch coat.

What type of Weather Resistive Barrier (WRB) can be used?Ply Gem Stone recommends using two separate layers of WRB in all applications where WRB is specified (interior applications can use one layer of WRB). The WRB must meet the requirements of ICC-ES AC 38 Acceptance Criteria for Water-Resistive Barriers. When using Grade D paper, a 60-minute rating is recommended. Felt paper must be clearly marked that it meets the requirements of AST M D 226 for #15 or #30 asphalt saturated felt (we do not recommend felt meeting AST M D 4869 or non-AST M #15 felt for use behind veneer). It is acceptable to use one layer of housewrap covered by a second layer of WRB meeting the requirements above. The WRB should be free of tears and holes.

Should a rainscreen drainage plane system be used?Ply Gem Stone does not require the use of a rainscreen drainage plane system for all applications. There are some building codes, however, that now require the use of rainscreen drainage plane systems behind cladding materials such as manufactured veneer.

Can Ply Gem Stone be installed around a fireplace?Ply Gem Stone works well when installed around a fireplace. The veneer needs to be installed a minimum of 18" from any open flame.

Are there measures that should be taken for hot or cold weather installations?The temperature should be 40˚ degrees or higher at the time Ply Gem Stone is installed in cold weather conditions. Mortar should be heated between 40˚ degrees F – 120˚ degrees F (not to exceed 140˚ degrees F) if the temperature is below 40˚ degrees F. If the mortar freezes it should be discarded. Wall surfaces may need to be covered and heated after the veneer has been installed to avoid freezing. See section 2104.3 of the International Building Code (IBC) for additional cold weather requirements.

Hot weather applications should follow the requirements in section 2104.4 of the IBC. Mortar should be kept under 120˚ degrees F and be utilized within two hours of initial mixing.

What measures should be taken for Ply Gem Stone applications higher than 30 feet?Ply Gem Stone can be installed on any structurally sound surface. Please refer to the Installation Instructions for all applications up to 30 feet in height. Please note that there is a 30 foot height limit for installations over wood-frame construction (unless special construction techniques accommodate different movement approved by a code official). For installations over non wood-framed sheathing (such as steel studs, concrete walls, etc.) there’s no specific height limitation. However, Ply Gem Stone recommends that you consult with a building code official regarding any project exceeding 30 feet in height.

Sustainable Resources:Ply Gem Stone’s quality control process results in more usable stones — and less • production and jobsite waste. Ply Gem Stone has a waste factor of 2%; compared to 10% average with natural stone.

Ply Gem Stone can be installed over existing cladding materials, resulting in less site • waste on remodeling jobs. Old cladding isn’t removed, so it never ends up landfills.

Ply Gem works with its suppliers to recycle as many materials as possible, including • cores, cardboard padding, batteries, light bulbs, toner, and paper.

Energy Efficiency:Ply Gem Stone stone veneer is lighter weight than brick and stone, so it requires less • energy to transport. And because of its thinner profile and lighter weight, more square footage can be shipped per truckload, reducing transportation impact.

Ply Gem Stone uses larger molds than most other brands, so we are able to produce •

more stones per man hour on the production line.
