First Niagara Center, located in the heart of Buffalo’s waterfront, is home to the city’s National Hockey League team, the Buffalo Sabres. In 2011, the team’s new owner decided to renovate the locker room space, a 30,000 square foot multi-use facility which included the coaches’ offices, sports training and exercise areas, kitchen and medical training space. More than just a place for athletes to prepare for games, the space was intended to be used as a recruiting tool for the small market city of Buffalo. Potential talent needed to be intrigued, to see the type of investment the city was willing to make in their career.

The ChallenGe

The Sabre team owners challenged Cannon Design to go beyond the best locker room designs in the league. They wanted the space to make a huge statement for the players. The need for bold, high-end design elements in this renovation project was imperative.

The solUTion

Cannon Design designed a drop lantern ceiling center piece with the Sabre logo emblazoned on the bottom. This strategic focal point would simultaneously provide consistent lighting and be a key branding element.

Cannon brought the design to the experts at 3form®, who recommended Chroma for this installation because of it’s rigidity. 3form developed an entire pre-lit solution to be easily attached given the onsite conditions.

BUFFALO SABRES

“3form® was chosen because of the flexibility of the material to fabricate the form we wanted to create and the ability to light it.” KEITH ALF, Lead Architect, Cannon Design

Light solution

Factory installed proprietary lighting. Tested to ensure an even glow and desired intensity.

Installation strategy

Designed custom hardware brackets to attach the Chroma feature to an on-site support system.

Hardware detail

Guided the architect to design a ceiling recess to enable concealed hardware. A six inch reveal around the perimeter of the feature allows for future access to the lighting.

Panel -to-panel construction detail

Structurally bonded the material edge to edge to create a virtually seamless appearance.

Power supply

Guided the contractor to locate the power supply in a remote location.

THE INNOVATION

The 3form light seam creates a monolithic corner condition. Cannon Design’s innovative angled lightbox spurred 3form to pioneer a new light seam capability—a radiused, sloped joinery condition. This advanced method is now a standard 3form offering.

Juniper Networks a computer networking solutions provider located in Sunnyvale, California—employs close to 10,000 people. Their vision of connecting everything and empowering everyone is a brand story they wanted to integrate into the space. The cafeteria and café area is used by a large number of employees throughout the day and is an opportunity to visually reinforce the commitment to the company goals of connectedness.

The ChallenGe

Tasked with designing a new corporate cafeteria for Juniper Networks, RMW Architecture sought to deliver a hospitality-style destination space. They envisioned cafeteria patrons enjoying a sleek and modern environment.

The signature design statement evolved by marrying a very functional serpentine service line layout with a unique ceiling element.

The solUTion

RMW was inspired by the 3form Ready to Go solution of a series of straight lightboxes. They collaborated with 3form to modify the Ready to Go into a serpentine shape.

“The fun began when we chose 3form® Chroma®. It was then that we really knew we could sell our idea. The lit Chroma feature became the statement piece. Everything else fell into place after that.” SAL WIKKE, Interior Designer, RMW Architecture

THE INNOVATION

RMW had the vision to transform 3form’s standard Ready to Go™ solution into a sleek serpentine flow to align with the cafeteria servery. Ready to Go lightboxes are a standard 3’ long x 4’ wide. They partnered with 3form to modify them per their design intent.

Light solution

Installed proprietary lighting and pre-tested to ensure an even glow and desired intensity

Installation strategy

Engineered reflective panel to bear the weight of the feature, serve as the ceiling attachment, and create even illumination

Hardware detail

Specified a thicker gauge of material for longer spans with less hardware. Minimal center supports required

Panel-to-panel connection detail

Utilized a half-lap quirk connection to eliminate light leakage

Joinery detail

Utilized a light seam to create a monolithic corner condition

Power supply

Guided the contractor to locate the power supply in a remote location

Devon Energy Corporation is a Fortune 500 oil and gas company headquartered in Oklahoma City with a vision for optimistic environmental stewardship and results. The company values the teamwork from their employees and the support of their shareholders. Devon’s goal to maximize value is at the forefront of their design goals for their executive’s high-end social club called the Petroleum Club.

The ChallenGe

Devon challenged Gensler to design their prestigious Petroleum Club, a high-end social club for executives within their new corporate headquarters. As the spectacular view window seating would be the most popular with patrons, Gensler sought to make the dimly lit bar area as bright and engaging. To this end, Gensler conceived a curved, lit monolithic slab. They envisioned it to have a slim profile and glow evenly. This room centerpiece would additionally serve to draw people in from the back lobby side.

The solUTion

3form® developed an unprecedented curved, slim lighting solution with even-panel illumination. The Design Guide team collaborated with the architect to engineer this custom, two-sided wall feature.

“We know that restaurant/bar spaces are most beneficial when they are versatile—when owners have the ability to change the ambience. Spaces need to be quiet for a Tuesday lunch and vibrant for a Friday evening.” ROSS CONWAY, Architect, Gensler

3form® is the leading manufacturer of award-winning, sustainable building materials and complete material solutions for the Architecture + Design industry. 3form corporate headquarters lobby serves as the main portal to a bustling building packed with material innovators, project-support teams and craftsmen.

The ChallenGe

The 3form entryway needed a facelift. The goal was to create something that was architecturally integrated and expressed the vibrant nature of the company. In-house designers wanted to create a feature to activate the environment, and make a good first impression in a limited space. Mindful that the reception area would serve as the main location for corporate events, they desired an easy and efficient way to change the experience quickly.

The solUTion

The design team conceived a corner lightbox along the space perimeter leading to the main foot traffic path. Standing proud of the the existing wall, the box was read as a glowing cube. RGB programmable lighting would give the feature the transformative capability the team desired.

3FORMLOBBY

“We wanted an entry feature that could continuously transform the character of the space with the flip of a switch.”

JILL CANALES, Senior VP of Marketing & Design, 3form
