Plug and play expresses the process of gathering information in a spatial and sequential manner. Starting with the largest structure (the information nucleus) , one is presented with an abundance of literature and knowledge. These information spaces consist of the book collection, archive, and the digital technology lab. Each of these spaces are connected to either relaxation or reflection spaces in order to escape and reflect the information just extracted. The reflection spaces consist of reading spaces and a common program room for conferences, meetings, special events, etc. The main circulation can act as a reflection space as well with beautiful views toward either side of the near bay. After reflection, the visitor has the opportunity to relax on the third floor terrace, the plug and play cafe, or the beautifully articulated outdoor space joining the two separate buildings which completes the triad of information gathering.

Self-discovery for children takes place in middle school during the transitional period from adolescent to teenage years. This short period includes many different changes to a child’s body, opinions, and outlooks on the world. Exposing them to many different activities and challenges like performing, physical activities, forced social interaction, and beauty will unlock new and exciting characteristics of the child’s abilities. State Street Middle School in Chicago, IL literally bridges between 6th, 7th, and 8th grade clusters and maturity levels in order to help create a fluid transition. As you travel through the path the flow is interrupted by alcoves filled with furniture and objects in order to “slow the pace” during the transition between classes or in rout to the library. This process is meant to emulate Cannon Design’s learning ecology of “slow the pace.” This concept helps create a visual connection throughout the entire space, dis-courage bullying by minimizing blind corners and places of isolation, and introducing alcoves and furniture in hallways to discourage high-speed traffic and create places of pause.

• The cubby system in the homerooms bring the
controlled clutter of a home into a classroom space. The semi transparency between spaces also starts to emulate the comforts of a home.
• Equipping learning spaces with domestic features such as kitchens, pantries, and cupboards can help make a school feel like a home.
• This concept helps create a visual connection throughout the entire space
• Discourage bullying by minimizing blind corners and places of isolation
• Introducing alcoves and furniture in hallways, will discourage high-speedtrafficandcreateplacesofpause.
Climbing builds kids’ motor skills and self-confidence, so don’t be afraid to install walls and structures they can clamber up.

The network is a multi-programme building serving the habitants of the Jamalpur community in Jamalpur, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. This very densly populated are is full of local craftsmen, schools, community buildings like museums, churches, and event halls, and a never ending need for spaces for vegitable selling. This specific site in Jamalpur has a wishbone shaped road running straight through it causing safty hazards for many. The Network allows for a community center to be created allowing space for a roof top park throughout the entire architecture, niche like spaces for vegitable vendors on the ground floor, graftsmen workspaces with galleries at the beginning of each wing, restaurant facilities with ample seating, retail, and finally residential arms that house the local craftsmen producing their work in this area. The traffic has been sent under ground therefore alleviating the saftey hazard of crossing the street the vertical circulation as been exposed creating ease of access to other parts of the building. Local stone “gateways” mark different program types and allow for a beautiful spacial experience.

Daylighting was initiallly a problem with this form because of the contextual relationship and canyon like nature of the foot print. This problem is solved by a simple observation of sunlight throughout the day. Daylight can be optimized because of the north south orientation. Providing a surface exposed to southern light but shaded from heat gain will naturally light the spaces efficiently because the the floor area is so narrow. Also providing skylights towards the north ends of the roofs will also provide lighting into the lower spaces. Also the penetrations in the roof where vertical circulation is inserted will help achieve a well lit space.
This team design project encompassed the act of taking another designer’s project and emphasizing their main idea with a redesign and detailed execution. The original designer of this project was Mr. Andrew Porter and was taken over by Robert McLaughlin and myself. As the new design team, we made it our goal to re-establish the concept of Möbius organization. The re-invigorated design not only strengthens the literal expression of a continuous, looping and overlapping path of circulation, but has begun to form the architectural spaces to this expression as well. The primary circulation now runs through the re-organized clusters, creating a moment of interaction that we interpret as the particular clusters homeroom. The adjusted program layout integrates art-dedicated spaces throughout en lieu of a single isolated art-wing. The courtyards and atria created by the voids in the loop are now formed and occur in a way that seems natural to the rest of the project. The idea of through instead of along has generated an architecture that achieves the initial goal to promote a continuous and integrated learning experience.
