The Problem• The Hispanic population is the fastest growing group of

people in the nation. • There are approximately 19,300 Hispanic Memphis

residents. • In order to adequately provide healthcare to the patient

population, the number of Spanish-speaking physicians must increase at a paralleled rate.

• Currently, the University of Tennessee offers no form of medical Spanish education to students in the College of Medicine.

The goals included:

• cutting down on time for each patient visit,

• establishing patient-doctor trust, and

• minimizing harm to patients due to language barriers.

Background

Page 6: Design Domicile Showcase

To meet these goals and solve the problem presented by UTHSC, the educational goal for our course became:

To communicate conversationally with Spanish speaking patients in a clinical setting.

Solution

Page 7: Design Domicile Showcase

To achieve this goal, we would provide the UTHSC medical students with an asynchronous, Web-based curriculum to learn Spanish for a clinical setting.

“You organized the content in a manner that has improved upon the original flow of the material.”

“The sequence flows very well. Learner interaction is good.”

One-to-one evaluators felt confident that they would be successful learning the content in this course.

They also found the layout and design to be easy to follow and uncluttered.

“The illustrations were very helpful, as well as the audio buttons for the words that were difficult to pronounce.”

“The course seemed great. It was easy to follow.”
