Disney Broadway Hit Newsies Coming To Deshler Stop the presses! This Disney film turned Tony-winning Broadway hit inspires everyone to fight for what's right and seize the day. Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by the true story of the 1899 Newsboys strike, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken ( Beauty And The Beast , Sister Act, Aladdin, Little Mermaid ) and Jack Feldman ( Lion King ) and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein ( Kinky Boots ). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience. This class is for parents, guardians, grandparents and foster parents. It is sponsored by the Thayer County Coalition, Rooted in Relationships and Blue Valley Community Action. Presenter is Rachel Degenhardt. People can register by calling 402.768.6727 or by emailing Rachel at [email protected]. The name of the class is: Circle of Security. Call with questions and plan to expand your parenting skills through this program. You might earn some dough and increase your family connections.

ACT for Juniors ...John Baylor All Juniors will take the ACT on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. This is a special opportunity. The Nebraska Department of Education will be paying the bill for this test for juniors….on this date only (one possible make - up date will be offered in May). Dept. of Education will not pay for the other National ACT Test Dates that are offered throughout the year. Any other times the student wants to take the ACT, they will need to sign up online and pay the testing fees. Students that qualify for free or reduced lunch program can obtain a waiver for test fees up to 2 times.

John Baylor Test Prep The school will once again offer the John Baylor Test Prep sessions to students. This program has been a wonderful service for students and many students can increase their score because of the John Baylor training sessions. The scores are then used for college entrance and in competition for scholarships. The scores are also used in placement in college classes; for example an 18 in English is required to qualify for the College English Composition class offered in the senior year. John Baylor’s product will now be online and students can more easily taylor the study sessions to their own perceived needs. More details will follow.

Boys State and Girls State Juniors are getting ready to apply for Girls and Boys State through the American Legion Post and Auxiliary. Juniors need a short application completed and a full resume of their high school activities, awards and employment. See Mrs. Unruh for further information.

Scholarship Search: Use EducationQuest.org All seniors and juniors are interested in learning about scholarships in a timely manner. One of our best sources is the college you are interested in attending, a second great source is the Scholarship Search on EducationQuest.org. Their database has over 2,000 scholarships for Nebraska students. Most seniors already have an account. This year, many scholarship opportunities are emailed to the school and then it is forwarded to the senior class. Our local applications are available in the guidance office. Parents and students are always welcome to visit the guidance office to look at and collect the appropriate applications. Seniors…where are you in the FAFSA process? Getting financial aid for college involves more than completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Make sure you get through each step of the process so that you don’t miss out on money for college.

Page 5: Deshler Public School€¦ · now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message,

Did you complete and submit a 2019-20 FAFSA? If you haven’t, complete the form at FAFSA.gov using 2017 income tax data. Before you start, you and a parent must each get an FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov . You’ll need the FSA IDs to access and sign your FAFSA. If you DID submit a FAFSA, here’s what happens next:

● Expect a Student Aid Report (SAR) via an email link. The SAR acknowledges that your FAFSA was received and lets you know if you need to take further action before the form can be processed.

● You might receive a “verification” notification. The college(s) you listed on your FAFSA may contact you requesting documents to verify information you included on your FAFSA. You must provide those documents before your financial aid can be processed.

● Watch for an award letter from the college(s) you listed on your FAFSA. This will detail the types and amounts of financial aid they are offering you. You must have been accepted for admission before the college will send an award letter.

It’s critical that you watch your email and/or student portal carefully to ensure you don’t miss important information about admission and financial aid.

What you need to know about scholarships! Most scholarships are based on academics, but others are based on community service, school involvement, or talent. Some are based on financial need as determined by the results of your FAFSA. Here’s where you can find scholarships:

● ScholarshipQuest at EducationQuest.org houses over 2,000 Nebraska-based scholarships. After you create a profile, you’ll be matched with scholarships that fit your criteria.

● Your school counselor’s office. Visit regularly to check on local and national awards. ● The college you plan to attend. Contact the school for a list of scholarships they provide and application

procedures. ● National search sites such as College Board , Peterson’s , and Chegg . ● Other resources could include your coach, clubs and organizations, and your parents’ employers and civic

organizations.

Sophomores take PreACT Sophomores took the Pre-ACT test on January 30th. The test gives them a preview of what the ACT (American College Testing) College Entrance exam will be like. The program also includes an interest inventory the students can use to explore future careers. When results arrive, students will get their test booklet back, they can review the test questions and increase their test taking skills by analyzing their thought process and look for strengths and weaknesses in their skills. Sophomores have two more years of high school to try to maximize their knowledge and skills and make a strategy for reaching their potential.
