Story and Photos by Pat KrauseCathedral City LGBT days

were held on March 25th-27th. There was an amazing amount of activities planned for this event. Fun days included a costume Charity Bed Race and Equality Balloon Rides. There was a Battle of the Bars. This was Easter weekend so many of the activities included an Easter Egg Hunt for the kiddies on the Cathedral City Festival Lawn and an Easter Bonnet Brunch. The Champagne Brunch was hosted by Bella da Ball and featured Coco Peru. Saturday night saw the screening of the iconic film, Sordid Lives. Fans of the movie stood in a long line to get in. The theater holds 400 people and it looked like every seat would be filled. It’s been awhile since the movie

has been shown in the Valley. The Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City hosted the movie. Guests came in Easter costumes like rabbit ears and one man wore his, I Love Ann Walker, tee shirt in honor of her role in the movie.

Director Del Shores arrived in a Hearse, which is befitting for the script of the movie. Several cast members arrived to the delight of the entire moviegoers and fans. Ann Walker, Rosemary Alexander, Newell Alexander, and Kirk Geiger arrived and posed for photos with fans. Some fans brought old DVDs of the movie to be autographed. This movie seems to have a special place in the hearts of all of Coachella Valley. It is probably the longest running film shown anywhere as it was shown at the

Camelot Theater for almost two years. It still fills theaters every time it is shown, as it is a really funny movie. Fans have seen it many times and never get tired of watching it again and again.

a Festival of Concerts. On March 20th, the concert was an extraordinary event featuring opera stars Placido Domingo and Renee Fleming, Maestro Domingo is hailed as the King of Opera during his

many years on the concert stage. The event started with music by the LA Opera Orchestra. What a thrilling sight to see the orchestra filling the stage. Conductor was James Conlon who made the music fill the room.

Renee Fleming came

on stage first and sang. Her beautiful voice thrilled the audience. Placido Domingo came out next and when he sings you don’t need to know the words as his artistry makes the song come to life. Not being a fan of Opera I was astonished at the power of their voices and the way they sing that

brings a special message to each song. They would explain each song before they sang that helped understand the words and story.

The crowd was especially pleased when they sang Some Enchanted Evening together and a medley of songs from West Side story, Maria and How We Danced. They last

performed together back in 1998. Fleming changed her gown and came out to sing Besame Mucho. She said she wore a Spanish dress including a fan just for her song, Morena. They received standing ovations when they finished. The guests wanted more but they finished their last duet together and waved goodbye.

The seats were filled in this 2200 seat auditorium, The Show at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. According to one of the ushers, The Show has been voted Best Venue for the last 7 years. Domingo had to catch a plane but was gracious enough to do a Meet and Greet after the show before he had to leave. Guests were given a special treat with an amazing violin solo between songs by the artists that again brought a standing ovation. Everyone commented while leaving that it was a wonderful show.

Meanwhile, the elderly and wealthy Osgood Fielding, Jr., Don Cilluffo, is pursuing Daphne, unaware she is actually Jerry in drag. Although Jerry is beginning to enjoy all the attention and expensive gifts from Fielding, he believes he must reveal his true gender to his doting suitor. If these shenanigans aren’t enough, re-enter mob boss Spatz and his gang as they discover who Josephine and Daphne really are.

Additional cast include PCT company members Ron Coranado, Steven Lee, Bianca Collins, Allegra De Angelo, Jaque La Blanqe, Jose Espareze. William “Bill” Layne directs sugar with musical direction by Steven Smith.

By Janice GoughAt one point

in my career, I considered Mutual Funds to be the Holy Grail of the

investment world. After all, rather than select one stock in an asset category, an investment manager or team would purchase the best stocks in that asset category, thus lessening your risk over owning one stock. However, I soon learned, these products can be complicated.

Using an advisor to direct you toward the Funds to invest in, would seem to be the best way to invest, however many Broker/Dealers have a

list of the funds they prefer their advisors to sell. Their bias may be based on the commissions their company will earn. By allowing an Advisor to have discretionary trading privileges may cause them to excessively trade to increase their commissions, which subtracts from your returns.

Mutual Funds can have twelve different expenses before the share price is calculated, which is referred to as Net Asset Value (NAV).

If you own Mutual funds you should review those funds by using the Morningstar reports. Morningstar, Inc. is an investment research and investment management firm for mutual funds. You can obtain use of their monthly reports at your local library. With this report, you can determine change of management, the top ten holdings of the fund, turnover

percentage (buying and selling within the fund), and current returns and how you fund rates among similar funds.

This tax season could turn out to be particularly uncomfortable one for mutual fund investors and their advisors. Despite losses or small gains in most major markets last year, many mutual funds distributed capital gains to investors who, in turn, have to pay taxes on those gains even though they made little or no profit on those investments and may even have incurred losses.

This “double whammy” is even more pronounced if the fund distributions were short-term capital gains, which are taxed at an investor’s income tax rate rather than the lower long-term capital gains of 15% or 20% for many investors, depending on their tax rate. (The 2015 capital gains rate

is 23.8% for investors with a modified adjusted gross income above $413,200 filing as a single taxpayer or above $464,850 for those filing jointly as a married couple.)

The average equity mutual fund has given up more than 1% a year in taxable distributions over the past 10 years, and the forfeiture is not limited to actively managed funds. While actively managed large-cap funds have forfeited 1.17% to taxable distributions, passively managed large caps have given up 0.8%. The numbers are even higher for small-cap funds.

There is a general lack of understanding of the impact that taxes cause. Taxes can turn fund gains into losses. Take the example of a $100,000 fund portfolio that gained 0.5% before taxes, or $500, and distributed 10% of its NAV in capital gains

(the average distribution was 9.7%, in 2015. That would cost an investor in the top tax bracket slightly more than $2,300, turning a $500 gain into an $1800 loss.

This tax liability is a “hidden expense ratio” that investors should consider when choosing mutual funds. In 2015, taxable contributions were especially high for a number of funds. Of the equity funds that distributed capital gains, 15% had a distribution that was greater than 15% of their NAV.

The Hidden Expenses in Mutual Funds

Tips Toward Fairer Disciplinary HearingsBy Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

In a perfect world, disciplinary hearings would be unnecessary because members all focused on being good neighbors to each other. However, disciplinary hearings are occasionally necessary, and if disorganized can be a negative experience for both board and homeowner. Consider these suggestions toward improved disciplinary and reimbursement hearings.

1. Give fair notice. Civil Code 5855(b) requires that disciplinary or reimbursement hearing notices contain at least the “date, time, and place of the meeting, the nature of the alleged violation… or … the damage to the common area and facilities for which a monetary charge may be imposed, and a statement

that the member has a right to attend and may address the board...” Many associations do not inform the member of the alleged violation. How can the member meaningfully discuss the issue with the board without knowing in advance what it is?

2. Have a published schedule of fines. Civil 5850(a) requires associations to have a list of fines, and that the list is part of the Annual Policy Statement packet (see Civil 5310). All too often, associations lack a written fine schedule, which jeopardizes its ability to impose fines and is also unfair to members.

3. Hold hearings in closed session. Members can demand a closed session, but such hearings should automatically be held that way without a request.

4. Set a reasonable time limit. Disciplinary hearings should not be open-ended. Ten to fifteen minutes should

be sufficient for an owner to explain themselves.

5. Let the member know what will happen. The member should be told the time limit, how many copies of information to bring, and if they can bring witnesses. The member wishing to contest the violation should know what is expected of the member at the hearing.

6. Keep the process confidential. Complaining owners often want the board to report on its enforcement regarding a neighbor, but the privacy of the violator should be protected if possible. Similarly, keep the identity of the complainer confidential - reduce risk of reprisals or confrontations between neighbors.

7. Avoid confrontations. If the hearing was initiated by a member complaint, there is no need for the complainer’s presence. The complainer does not have the right to

be present, and it could humiliate the other member and escalate the possibility of hostility. This is not a court hearing, and the accused does not have the right to cross-examine witnesses or argue with their accuser. This is an informal proceeding between neighbors.

8. Do not interrupt members while presenting their side of the issue. Let them explain their position, and avoid using their time by arguing or discussing the issue. After the member is finished, that is the time for any questions from the board.

9. Do not deliberate in front of the member. Excuse the member, explaining that the board will now discuss the subject, and will in writing inform the member of the decision within fifteen days.

10. Do not allow the member to speak through surrogates, tenants, or attorneys. This is an informal neighbor to neighbor event.

11. Adopt rules regarding disciplinary and reimbursement hearings. Members should know how the process works.

12. Be reasonable - neighborly conduct is the goal, and the board should also be reasonable as it consistently enforces the governing documents.

By Desert Star StaffAs many families in rural

communities struggle for economic security, experts say that the afterschool programs that keep students safe and inspire them to learn are in short supply.

A recently released report, “The Growing Importance of Afterschool in Rural Communities,” finds that just 13 percent of rural students in the U.S. participate in an afterschool program. While this number is up from 2009, it’s still considerably below the 18 percent nationwide rate.

According to America After 3PM, a household survey commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization, for every rural child in an afterschool program, the parents of three more say their child would be enrolled if a program were available. That amounts to 3.1 million children. Unmet demand is especially high among Hispanic, African-American and low-income rural families.

“Many rural communities nationwide are characterized by strong social ties,” says Jodi Grant, executive director of the Afterschool Alliance. “But poverty, food insecurity and low education levels

persist in rural communities. Indeed, in 2014, one in four rural children was living in poverty. Quality afterschool programs are a valuable gateway to a successful future, and it should be a high priority for leaders to meet the need in rural America.”

The new report, underwritten by John

Deere, finds that:• One in five rural students

is unsupervised after school.• More than four

in five rural parents support public funding for afterschool programs.

• Rural enrollment in summer learning programs is on the rise, yet there’s significant unmet demand.

• Both participation and unmet demand in afterschool programs are lower among children in white and higher-income rural families than African-American and Hispanic families.

• An overwhelming majority of rural parents report they are satisfied with their child’s afterschool program overall.

• An appreciably higher percentage of urban parents report their child’s afterschool program offers STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning opportunities than rural parents.

• Nearly three in four rural parents agree that afterschool programs should provide nutritious foods and 61 percent say they do so; 73 percent of rural parents agree that afterschool programs keep kids physically active.

In an accompanying online survey, rural afterschool program providers reported that the top challenge they face is raising funds to sustain their afterschool programs.

“The Growing Importance of Afterschool in Rural Communities” report offers

these recommendations for increasing access in rural communities:

• Make information about programs more readily available to parents.

• Increase national attention to the essential role afterschool programs play.

• Provide rural communities opportunities to share promising practices and resources through conferences and an online hub.

• Increase STEM programming.

• Increase investment.

“As we identify ways to address the challenge of feeding the world now and in the future, it’s clear we’ll need to utilize all our human resources, including future leaders growing up in America’s rural communities,” says Mara Sovey Downing, John Deere’s director of global brand management and citizenship. “It’s time to strengthen the afterschool and summer learning opportunities parents value and children need.” StatePoint

By Desert Star StaffTuberculosis (TB) is a

serious, highly contagious disease that kills about 1.5 million people each year

worldwide and has become the world’s leading infectious disease killer, according to a new report from the World Health Organization.

TB usually begins as a latent infection, which can be silent for weeks, months or years before developing into an active contagious disease

characterized by chronic cough, fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats and coughing up blood. With this in mind, regular testing for the early stage of TB infection is important, especially in children whose immune systems are not fully developed and thereby have a higher risk of it progressing into an active and possibly deadly disease.

However, “inaccurate,” “time-consuming” and “outdated” are the three terms most often used to describe the 110-year-old TB skin test, which is the most commonly used test to aid in the diagnosis of the infection. The TB skin test requires an injection of antigens to see how the patient’s body reacts, multiple doctors’ visits and can result in false positives, especially in those who have been

vaccinated for TB in the past.Luckily another option for

the detection of TB infection -- a TB Blood Test -- is now being offered and represents a major scientific advance over its predecessor, giving greater accuracy and a more dependable result.

Reliable results from the TB Blood Test can be obtained within 24 hours and provided by telephone, offering the convenience of a single visit, and confidence in an objective, laboratory-based result. More information can be found at www.TheTBBloodTest.com.

As a parent or caretaker, your children and loved ones come first, and when it comes to their health, you don’t want any surprises. Talk to your doctor about better testing methods for TB infection that offer greater reliability and convenience. StatePoint

-A local family of three had their vacation cut short as flames engulfed their truck in Palm Desert.

A faulty cell phone charger is being blamed as the cause of the fire.

The incident happened at an AM/PM gas station near Cook Street and Gerald Ford around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Quick action by the driver, Kavin Rubarth, may have been the only thing that prevented something worse from happening.

Rubarth said he was gassing up when his cellphone charger caught fire.

He was able to get his wife and child out of the truck and quickly moved the car 30 feet from the pumps to avoid a potential catastrophe.

“I was getting gas over

at number fourteen, once I topped off with gas I came over here and I put the charger in there to get the phone working. Next thing you know my wife said it was getting hot, so we yanked it out and next thing you know it caught on fire

and then we called the fire department,” said Rubarth.

Riverside county fire quickly responded and put out the fire. Fortunately, no one was injured.

By Desert Star StaffPHOENIX - Some angry

Arizona voters are calling for a federal investigation into possible voter suppression in last week’s Arizona presidential primary, after it took some Phoenix-area voters up to five hours to cast their ballots.

Maricopa County elections officials said they cut the number of polling places from 200 to 60 as a cost-saving measure, which led to long lines and caused many potential voters to give up.

Ruben Gallego, a Democrat representing Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, says the people responsible for the long lines need to be held accountable.

“At this point, if it was by chance or by planning, no matter what, there’s nothing that we can deny; that voter suppression

happened.” says Gallego.Arizona Democrats held

a news conference to blame Republicans for the problem, charging that election officials deliberately set up fewer polling places to discourage voters in low-income and minority neighborhoods.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, also a Democrat, wants the federal Department of Justice to investigate.

Some Republican officials, including Gov. Doug Ducey, are calling for election changes but deny deliberately suppressing votes.

Steve Gallardo, the lone Democrat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, says when that body approved the primary election plan back in February, it was clear to him there were going to be problems.

“We all saw the excitement

around both political campaigns coming forward,” says Gallardo. “We saw the excitement on both the Republicans’ and Democratic sides. We knew this

was going to a large turnout.”County officials estimate

about 50 percent of Maricopa’s more than 1.2 million registered voters turned out for the

primary. Election officials say no other county in the state reported excessive wait times at precincts during their primary voting.

By Desert Star StaffSACRAMENTO, Calif.

- Several environmental

groups are suing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife over a permit

the agency issued to the Panoche Valley Solar Project in central California, about 60 miles east of Monterey.

The plaintiffs in the suit, which include the advocacy groups Defenders of Wildlife, the Sierra Club and the Santa Clara County Audubon Society, argue the commercial solar installation threatens several highly endangered species, including the San Joaquin kit fox, the blunt-nosed leopard lizard and the giant kangaroo rat, whose population has declined 95 percent in recent years.

Kim Delfino is the California program director with Defenders of Wildlife.

“With these species this is literally the last place that they have left in the state of California,” she says. “Actually

in the world, because they don’t exist anywhere else. So we’re very concerned that if this project moves forward these species will become extinct in the end.”

The tiny Panoche Valley is one of three federal recovery areas for Central Valley wildlife, and this solar project would cover half of the valley floor.

The project still needs a Clean Water Act permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a federal Endangered Species Act permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which will be issuing the final biological opinion.

Sarah Friedman, senior campaign representative for the Sierra Club, says the group may seek additional legal action to stop construction before it begins.

“We just need to do whatever it takes to protect these species,” says Friedman. “The remaining habitat they have has been developed for energy, for oil and gas, for solar, for housing. They have nowhere left to go and if we don’t save this habitat they could really be pushed to the edge.”

The project is co-owned by Renewable Energy Trust Capital and ConEd Development, a subsidiary of the New York-based utility.

The companies say the project will contain 1.1 million solar panels and will contribute clean energy to the grid.

The environmental groups say they support solar, but would like to see it moved to a less-sensitive location.

By Desert Star WeeklyThe US Capitol complex

and White House were locked down after reports of an active shooter on Capitol Hill. Members of Congress and the tourists visiting the building were told to shelter in place.

No one was allowed to enter or exit any of the buildings in the congressional complex. Anyone outside was advised to “seek cover immediately,” local media reported.

Shots were reportedly fired at the Capitol Visitor Center,

an underground facility on the east side of the main building.

One police officer was shot, but “not seriously,” according to the Capitol’s Sergeant at Arms Frank Larkin. He said the shooter has been caught, but the shelter-in-place order is still in effect.

The White House was placed on lockdown as well. The lockdowns were lifted around 3:10 p.m. as

the shooting suspect was reported to be in custody.

By Desert Star StaffCellebrite, an Israeli

mobile forensic software company, is aiding the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its quest to unlock the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters, Israeli media reported.

Cellebrite, an Israeli mobile forensic software company, is aiding the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its quest to unlock the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters, Israeli media reported.

The FBI has been contracting with Cellebrite to break through a locked iPhone, “according to experts in the field familiar with the case,” according to Ynet, online outlet of the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronot.

This would be a step in a much different direction in the FBI’s ongoing battle with Apple over the device belonging to Syed Farook, one of the perpetrators of December’s massacre in San Bernardino, California, that left 14 people dead.

Cellebrite, considered a global leader in the field of digital forensics, hasn’t officially commented on

their involvement with the FBI. However, The Verge reported the company has had a sole-source contract with the Bureau since the 2013, specifically to help with data extraction – the very task at hand in the San Bernardino case.

The FBI initially attempted to force Apple to crack the iPhone via an ongoing court battle, one which the company’s CEO Tim Cook said he was willing to carry all the way to Supreme Court, to defend the privacy of its customers.

Just as the two parties were scheduled to go to court on Tuesday, a federal judge agreed to the FBI’s request to postpone the hearing, after prosecutors announced that an unnamed “non-governmental third party” had presented a potential way to crack Apple’s flagship product without the company’s help.

If the third party successfully bypasses the iPhone’s security features, it could have business implications for Apple that go beyond this particular case.

Other tech giants – and as of this month, the Department of Defense – routinely set

bounties for identifying and fixing exploitable flaws for outside hackers to claim. Facebook paid out almost $1 million total in such bounties to independent researchers who found bugs in 2015, and Google paid hackers $6 million in 2010.

Apple, however, doesn’t engage in this industry-standard practice, and hackers have turned to underground markets to sell knowledge of flaws in the company’s software that not even the company itself has, and this could be why the FBI is able to turn to third parties.

The showdown between Apple and the federal government has spilled over from the realm of the courts and technology, finding itself under the scrutiny of lawmakers. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-California) and Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) have been working since the Paris terror attacks in November, followed quickly by the one in San Bernardino, on an encryption bill that could be introduced to the Senate any day, reported The Hill.

Feinstein and Burr argue that it is currently too easy for criminals and terrorists to

“go dark,” and the new bill would force companies like Apple to comply with court orders that seek access to encrypted communications.

“The going-dark issue has been gathering momentum (in Congress) like a train coming down the tracks, but it still seemed for a while like it was going to be a long time before it got to the station,” said Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, according to Reuters. “But it arrived with a fury with this lawsuit.”

Ahead of the expected announcement of a $15 per hour minimum wage deal between the Governor, labor unions and legislative leadership, NFIB/CA reaffirms its opposition to this onerous burden on small business.

“Small businesses in California are still struggling to cope with the 25% minimum wage hike over just the past two years. Proposing a 50% increase

on top of that is reckless and ignores serious negative consequences including job loss and increased costs to job creators, senior citizens, and non-profits,” said NFIB/CA State Executive Director Tom Scott. “It is no surprise that CEO Magazine has consistently ranked California dead last for its business climate; raising the minimum wage to the highest in the nation is the last thing Sacramento should do to job creators in this state.”

Tom Scott added, “It is especially troubling that this minimum wage deal was crafted behind closed doors with no public input or transparency. It is clear Sacramento is broken when sweeping proposals such as this are crafted in the dark and quickly moved through the Legislature, ignoring the voice of our 22,000 small business members and others.”

Despite a change of opinion by the Governor, it is important to remember

that his Department of Finance estimated a state increase to just $13.00 per hour would increase costs to various state agencies by at least $4.7 billion over three years—in addition to fiscal impacts on individuals and businesses. Governor Brown also commented, “Raise the minimum wage too much and you put a lot of poor people out of work…There won’t be a lot of jobs. It’s a matter of balance.”

99.2% of businesses in

California are small business, many of which would not be able to continue operating at their current level with a $15 state minimum wage. Seattle is already seeing significant job loss and stagnation following their $15 minimum wage hike, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Representing the largest number of small businesses in California, NFIB opposes raising the state minimum wage to $15 per hour.

By Desert Star StaffSAN DIEGO - Rocky

De La Fuente, a San Diego businessman and lesser-

known Democratic candidate for president, announced on Monday he’ll make a bid for the White House as an Independent, should he fail to win the nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente is on the primary or caucus ballots in nearly two dozen states, including California.

He made his fortune in real estate, car sales and finance, and has loaned his campaign $2 million. In his view, the Democratic National Committee has been unfair in shutting him out of the debates.

“If my party continues to deny me, I will run as an

independent, so America has an option,” says De La Fuente. “Tell the Democratic Party, tell the DNC that we are independent people and we are smarter than they give us credit for.”

De La Fuente’s campaign emphasizes his experience as a job creator, and his position that undocumented immigrants are an asset to the country, who need to be allowed to work and pay taxes.

He is pro-choice and supports universal health care, as well as a state-by-state approach to gun control.

San Diego State University lecturer James Ingram, an expert on presidential politics,

says De La Fuente could make a difference in states where the general election is a squeaker.

“And if he’s able to parlay some of those financial successes into being taken seriously as a candidate, then it is conceivable that his spoiler will be important in a couple of states,” says Ingram. “If you do end up having a really closely-fought election.”

Ingram says history shows independent candidates are often passionate about their issues and manage to get them onto the national radar, regardless of whether they garner enough votes to win.

By Desert Star StaffSACRAMENTO - Adding

to Chipotle’s woes, workers from one of its suppliers protested at two California restaurant locations on Thursday, alleging food safety and labor violations - not by Chipotle, but by the supplier.

About 40 workers from Taylor Farms, which is based in Tracy, picketed at Chipotle restaurants in Manteca and Sacramento.

Taylor Farms supplies tomatoes and other cut vegetables to Chipotle, as well as to many grocery chains around the nation.

Doug Bloch, political director for the Teamsters Joint Council 7, helped organize the protest, aimed at the produce supplier.

“Workers report things like dirty water being used to wash tomatoes, freshness labels being changed on the products before they’re

shipped out,” he says. “And we think it’s a dangerous environment for workers and also for consumers.”

Chipotle has been forced to close stores multiple times in

the past year due to outbreaks of food-borne illness, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said tainted produce may be the cause, but the issues have not been

traced back to Taylor Farms. Taylor Farms did not

respond to a request for comment.

Bloch says the Teamsters Union represents 2,500 workers at the Taylor Farms plant in Salinas, and doesn’t see the same problems there.

He adds the union has been trying to organize 900 workers at the Taylor Farms’ location in Tracy for the past two years.

“In 2012, 20 workers were hospitalized after a chemical spill,” says Bloch. “Last year, the same accident happened and in the meantime, California OSHA has cited the company for almost 50 different violations of California law.”

Bloch says Thursday’s protests are just the beginning; the union plans to picket other Chipotle locations and grocery stores that get produce from Taylor Farms.

By Desert Star StaffTechnology, already

critical in many areas of health care, is poised to play an even greater role in medicine, especially in the area of pain management.

“Instead of pharmaceuticals, you are going to see the emergence of ‘technaceuticals,’ ” says David B. Sutton, CEO of Physician’s Technology LLC and co-inventor of the Willow Curve, a low-level smart laser that treats joint pain.

Such technology is being developed at an opportune time because many people prefer to avoid pain medication when possible. Also, the CDC recently urged doctors who prescribe opioids to cut down on their use because of the risk that patients can become addicted to these narcotics, as well as the alarming increased incidence of fatal prescription-

medication overdose.“You also have this

tsunami of aging baby boomers who have seen technology solving all kinds of problems their entire lives,” Sutton says. “It seems natural to them to look to technology to address more and more of their health care needs.”

A variety of gadgets are helping to re-invent medicine, from new scanning technology that gives a clearer picture of lung disease to magnetic nanoparticles that stop strokes caused by blood clots.

The Willow Curve™, which Sutton co-invented with Dr. Ronald Shapiro, is one example of how technology can work to temporarily ease chronic pain and is the leading product in the developing field of technaceuticals.

Because it’s also a smart computer, the device assesses the condition of the joint and delivers a

targeted digital treatment.A variety of ailments

can be treated with technaceuticals, including arthritis, general joint pain, knee pain, tennis elbow and rotator-cuff injuries, among many others.

“This is a way to use technology to temporarily relieve pain, reduce swelling, improve mobility and improve the quality of life,” Sutton says.

Such digital-therapeutic technology could be appealing for consumers who:

• Want to reduce chemical dependency. Technology may not replace pain pills completely, but it does provide a safe alternative for those who want to reduce their dependency on chemicals and avoid side effects.

• May not be surgical candidates. Some people may not be eligible candidates for surgery and others want more time to decide, Sutton says.

Technology that helps them temporarily reduce chronic pain puts them in a better position to remain active by temporarily relieving their joint pain while they decide.

• Want to manage health care at a lower cost. Health insurance provides limited reimbursements for many procedures and the cost of co-pays is rising. Treatment that continues over time – such as for prescription medication – can cause expenses to add up. In comparison, an in-home technological device is a one-time expense.

“This technology isn’t meant as a substitute for medical treatment, but can be used in tandem with it,” Sutton says. “Potentially, as the use of digital-therapeutic technology grows, the nation could see massive savings in health-care costs.”

Technology Stands Ready To Temporarily Relieve Pain

You’re the target, repository, fiery field, recipient, beneficiary, receiving instructions directly from God (Uranus) that everything must change. You’re initiator, designer, architect, inventor, leading the other eleven signs in building cooperatively the new world order. This is an interesting task since cooperation isn’t your specialty. However, since you’re the leader, you will learn. Call upon Uranus for help. Keywords: monumental change.

So much is being released from your body, emotions, mind. Perhaps you’re having headaches. There’s a new path to be walked upon. The previous one is fast disappearing. All that you’ve done up to this time is preparatory. A deeper spiritual reality appears through dreams, study, contemplation. A new journey to new lands, too. This will take time. You will be changed profoundly. Keynote: Saving the world.

You are to meet new people, enter a new group and social network. These people are unusual. They meet your needs for spiritual depth, esoteric and astrology study. A place has been prepared

for you. All that you have known now feels limiting, dull, uninspiring, tedious and without humor. Yes? What do you need to come forth? Keywords: Esoteric Group

In the coming years, beginning now, new gifts, talents, abilities and achievements appear, slowly at first, and then pouring down like a summer rain. You discover yourself, feel freedom for the first time, seek freedom for others because you understand not being free – from emotional obstacles, beliefs, thought-forms you thought were real. All past disappears. You stand “revealed.” Keyword: Talents.

Many and various events cross your path creating adventures, goals, and a new spiritual and/or religious state. You may travel far and wide, consider dual citizenship, study alien life forms. Everything foreign (different) and cultural becomes your focus. Study unexpectedly begins, ends, shifts dimensions. Are you to found a college, a publishing house, an animal sanctuary. Keywords: Perception radicalizes.

Pay close attention in the coming years. Everything concerning money, resources,

inheritances, wills, taxes alters. You will learn many things, enter new territories, new dimensions. You will learn how to value, safeguard and cherish what you have. You will transform, rise up like a phoenix, soar like an eagle, who mates for life. So much uncertainty at first, later leads to new and greater intimacy. Keyword: Experimentation.

An interesting new energy enters your relationships. You will learn to identify, live with, and be at ease with these changes. You will realize difference creates change and change allows everything to thrive. You will cultivate change in your relationships by introducing new and exciting ideas, plans, and ways of living differently than what most think possible. You will initiate the idea that all minds are created equal. This in itself is revolutionary. Keywords: Cultivation, as in a garden.

You will realize that all relationships must have, at their center, freedom and equality. You will not tolerate anything that creates a hierarchy of power-over or dominance in any part of your life. In your workday world, you will become free of restrictions, Daily routines unravel, your diet and exercise change to

meet your body’s new health needs. Locations, work, have all changed. Nothing stays the same. Keyword: Finally!

What’s important to you? Creative self-expression, fun, playfulness, spontaneity. You become the shining example of all things new. Many will embrace your emerging true self. Others will be disturbed. As you become more and more out-of-the-ordinary, creativity increases. There could be unexpected love affairs (they come and go), a pregnancy (real or metaphor), a risk-taking windfall. You become a protector of children (child within). You’ll feel you “have it all.” Keyword: Uninhibited.

Your domestic situation and/or routines will begin to change. You may seek a new location, completely redo or rearrange your home. You may be called to travel, seeing a new location of beauty. Be sure, by working on this daily with family, that communication, kept open and sharing, the seasons change, the family changes. Keywords: Contact (communication) releases Love.

What was written for Aries, applies also to you, but in a different context. You, along

with Gemini, are responsible for the distribution of ideas to the minds and hearts of humanity (the masses). You’re responsible for exposing new concepts that help create the new era through art and the art of conversation. You are to make the “contacts that release the love that underlies all happenings”. Always have hope. Keywords: Conscious Intention.

Your values and sense of self-worth, resources, assets, finances and possessions shift unexpectedly, fluctuate radically until they reach a balance and equilibrium. Your skills increase, your wounds will heal, recognition occurs, and brilliance from the Raincloud of Knowable Things becomes available. The magnetic center is revealed. The rollercoaster eventually comes to a stop. Keywords: “Build it and they will come”.

If you’re part of a family business, there’s good news and bad news, says Family Business USA president Henry Hutcheson.

More than 70 percent of all businesses in the United States are family businesses, generating more than half of the U.S. Gross National Product (GNP). However, two out of three don’t survive to the next generation, and with 500,000 new businesses starting each month in the United States, family businesses are replaced at a rapid rate.

How does a family business remain on the plus side of these statistics?

“There are a number of sound practices while sustaining a family business,” Hutcheson says, “but there’s a big difference between working with your children and lining up your succession plan with your kids in mind.”

Hutcheson, author of “Dirty Little Secrets of Family Business” dirtylittlesecretsoffamily-business.com), provides tips for dealing with the biggest threat to a family

business – surviving transition to the next generation.

• Identify your children’s individual strengths. It’s impossible for your son or daughter to think and act exactly like you. If you’re the founder of the business, this may be even more difficult to keep in mind because you started a business from scratch. Your children may not have the same entrepreneurial spirit. That’s perfectly okay, because your business is in a different stage from when you started it. While experience has given you a large bank of knowledge, allow your successor to shine and contribute at their pace. Guide them gently; they will want to do some things their own way. Let them know when they’ve done something exceptional, especially if you wouldn’t have thought of it.

• Expose your children to all aspects of the job. Merchandising, production, management, buying, marketing, financial planning – the list goes on regarding all the things to understand in general management. You may not be an expert in all

areas, but you know more than the average employee. To start preparing your children for the top position, they must understand how things work at the bottom. When they’ve spent time in the trenches, they better comprehend operations, and the kind of people they’ll need to employ in the future.

• Stretch your children’s

abilities by having them work for another company. The period after graduation is a scary phase of life, but jumping into the family business right away isn’t the best move. Children have an urge to distinguish themselves from their parents, and working for another company is a great way to do so. Let them spread their wings, learn

new things and appreciate small victories outside of the business. If and when they choose to work for the family business, they’ll feel better about the decision.

“A mentoring relationship toward the next generation is also extremely helpful,” Hutcheson says. “It provides a realistic but loving perspective.”

Make Room for ‘Room’ on DVD

If you were not able to catch the eight nominated films for this year’s Academy Award, fear not because they are now available on Blu-ray and DVD. “Room,” from Lionsgate, did not take home the gold for Best Picture, but lead actress Brie Larson won an Oscar for her stellar leading performance as Ma in the film. Young Jacob Tremblay, who played her 5-year-old son Jack, was not nominated, but he too turned in an Oscar worthy performance.

The film, based on the best selling novel by Emma Donoghue, is the heart-wrenching story of a young woman and her 5-year-old

son, who was born in captivity after she was abducted seven years earlier. His mother’s love and the shed they call “room” is the only life the young boy has ever known. What he observes about the real world comes only from watching the small TV set in their tiny, confining “room.”

The film, like Donoghue’s novel, is divided into two segments--the mother son relationship in captivity and their life after they discover a way to escape. While the young mother has suffered as a prisoner, she has been able to cope and survive by taking care of her little boy.

In the second segment of the story, we meet her family. The kidnapping has been devastating for them as well. But being reunited after seven long years is not easy for any of them. Freedom is a wonderful thing, but it is difficult to adjust to after seven years in confinement. Readjusting to the real world is particularly difficult for the young woman who is now psychologically disturbed and damaged. This terrible incident has also taken a toll on the family she left behind. Bill Macy and Joan Allen play her parents and Sean Bridgers (HBO’s “Deadwood”) is the man who abducted her.

At War,” by filmmaker Michael Kirk (United States of Secrets, League of Denial), takes a revealing look at political relations between the United States and Israel, long one of America’s closest allies. Now, with new waves of violence between Israelis and Palestinians unfolding and Israel-U.S. relations already emerging as a 2016 campaign issue, FRONTLINE presents this two-hour documentary tracing Netanyahu’s path to power, his combative relationships with multiple U.S. presidents and the implications in America and the Middle East.

KIrk and his investigative team draw on more than 30 remarkably candid interviews with Netanyahu’s current and former advisors, top Israeli, American and Palestinian officials, foreign policy analysts, authors and journalists for this unprecedented look inside the relationship between the U.S. and Israel during the Netanyahu years. A polarizing figure on the world stage, Netanyahu’s hardline policies on Iran and

Israeli -Palestinian affairs have won him both intense support and bitter criticism at home and abroad, particularly after his dramatic attempt in March 2015 to derail president Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran in front of the U.C. Congress. Running time, approximately 120 minutes.

‘A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder’

By Jack LyonsTheatre and Film Critic

Music maybe the food of love per the

Bard, who urges us to play on. However, it’s devilishly difficult when everyone is laughing and having a great time to think about squaring the circle concerning the murderous aspects in the title of the brilliant and entertaining musical comedy/farce production now on stage at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

It must be the perverse nature of human beings that we claim to revile the darker aspects of our nature, yet revel in its powerful and seductive attractions. Many of us are drawn to chocolate in all its addictive forms, and how can one explain the hypnotic fascination of watching the aftermath of a train wreck or a

roadside traffic accident? We are a strange species indeed.

Regardless of your quirk, one can’t help but enjoy the sparkling and inventive on-stage musical comedy machinations of ‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder’ in one of the Ahmanson’s slickest and audience-pleasing productions this season.

The multiple Tony-winning production written by librettist and lyricist Robert L. Freedman, with music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak, is based on the 1907 Roy Horniman novel ”Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal”, which in turn became the inspiration for the 1949 British Ealing Studios movie “Kind Hearts and Coronets”, making Alec Guinness an international movie star in the process.

The Ahmanson stage audience buzzed with

anticipation and excitement prior to curtain up on opening night as many celeb’s and stars could be seen chatting in the audience. I was seated next to an original Broadway cast member and star performer Jane Carr. Seated next her was the legendary Gordon Davidson, Artistic Director Emeritus of Center Theatre Group. Davidson’s thirty-eight year stewardship and personal vision helped make The Mark Taper Forum, The Ahmanson, and The Kirk Douglas Theatres become ‘must attend’ venues over the years, thus cementing Los Angeles’ reputation as a theatre town as well as a movie and TV oriented city.

The story of our anti-hero (after all, the character becomes a serial killer) Monty Navarro sensationally played by Kevin Massey, is a tale that takes place in 1907 Edwardian London.

The plot is driven partly by revenge for past family slights, partly by the ambition of young Navarro - a man with no prospects of bettering his life - who learns that he is a disinherited member of one of England’s leading aristocratic families – the D’Ysqith’s. It’s a family of eight relatives, all of whom, are in the line of succession to become the Earl of Highurst, and, all are played by the incredibly talented John Rapson, in a tour de force turn.

Complicating Navarro’s life is his hormone-driven infatuation with the sexy Sibella Hallward, seductively played and sung by Kristen Beth Williams. Sibella has plans other than to be involved in an affair with a

penniless store clerk; that is, until Monty informs her of his recent news. Suddenly his prospects and appeal have greatly improved in her eyes.

Monty is now faced with the reality of coming up with a plan to remove all eight impediments standing in his way in order to become the Ninth Earl of Highurst without drawing suspicion to himself. How he goes about the competition removal process is the hilarious stuff of invention and execution (no pun intended) performed by an inspired cast of actor/singers who act and perform in true ensemble fashion.

Halfway through his quest, Monty meets his cousin Phoebe D’Ysquith, (a lovely Adriennne Eller who also boasts a set of soaring soprano pipes) a sweet young lady who becomes smitten with him. Fortunately for her, Phoebe is not on Monty’s removal list. But she has him on her husband-to-be list. And the plot get thicker… but no spoiler alerts here.

The musical features nineteen songs and musical numbers that crackle with energy and precision. Under the baton of musical director Lawrence Goldberg, the show has the look and feel of a precision Olympic synchronized Swim Team that at times is breathtaking in its execution. Visually it’s a lush and stunning-looking production that has the audience applauding after every scene break, which by the way, is richly deserved. All of the above mentioned comedy/farce story components and stage business is the

province of the production’s gifted, and inventive director Darko Tresnjak.

His creative fingerprints are all over this splendid production. This is the second production of the show directed by Tresnjak that I’ve seen and each time he imbues the production with a fresh and inventive quality that has become his hallmark.

When he was the artistic director at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre (2004 -2009) audiences eagerly looked forward to plays that were directed by him knowing full well that theatrical surprises were just a scene ahead.

The technical arsenal available to directors at the Ahmanson is limitless. The creative technical team led by Tresnjak has scenic design wizard Alexander Dodge deliver a magnificent set along with design projections and special effects galore that are sprinkled throughout the production. Keep your eyes on the doorway connecting two rooms in Act 2 ...priceless!

The costumes designed by Linda Cho are stunning, colorful, and functional, as they must be for this physically and athletically performed production. Making sure we get to see every nuanced moment on stage, falls to Lighting Designer Philip S. Rosenberg who doesn’t disappoint. Choreography is by Peggy Hickey.

“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” performs at the Ahmanson Theatre, and runs through May 1, 2016.

General David Petraeus Story and Photos by Pat Krause

General David D. Petraeus was the final speaker for the 2016 Desert Town Hall series presented by The H. N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. The event is always held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in the Emerald Ballroom. There is a Youth Town Hall that is held prior to the main speaker that is held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel. A buffet is provided for 150 students from all the local high schools in the Coachella Valley. Gen. Petraeus is a highly decorated four star General, Former director of the CIA, Led many commands, earned many medals and awards by the U.S. and foreign countries, and continues to spread his knowledge in his new careers.

The students were able to hear from Jason and Suzanne Matthews, a best selling author of, Red Sparrow. This couple worked undercover for 33 years in the CIA, lived overseas and passed on secrets to our government. They spoke

about their life in the CIA and what it was like to be a foreign agent. The couple answered questions from the students about their concerns of working with the CIA.

Gen. Petraeus spoke to the students and also answered their questions. One student asked if going to the military academy was helpful in his career. He said yes but also that other colleges offer as good training and have specialized classes for all careers. He said he could tell them to be good citizens, stay away from drugs etc. but they have all heard that before. He told them that they needed to take head winds and turn them into tail winds. He noted that many of the students were in the ROTC programs and was proud to see that. He left by saying that their life is ahead of them and he would trade

places with them in a minute. A moderator asked Gen.

Petraeus questions that came from the audience. Topics of the questions ranged from Benghazi to Hillary Clintons role as Sec. of State. He was asked about his thoughts on Donald Trump but said he didn’t know him well enough to make any remarks. Patraeus spoke about the Surge and it didn’t mean manpower. It was mainly a

Surge of Ideas. He said, that we need to learn from all the mistakes we have made and that ISIS is not going away. It will be a generational struggle on terrorism.

He said that our country needs to lead and others will follow. We need to strike all areas at once and we need more intelligence. We made a mistake when we left Iraq and didn’t help Syria when it needed help. He said the

Bergdahl matter was one where we never leave a serviceman behind. He believes in privacy in the case against Apple but we have people that can do that without them. He remarked that we all must share intelligence, every country, bureaus and law enforcement and work as one. He asked all Viet Nam vets to stand and be recognized as they had a difficult role to play and we should honor them.

GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ:GPRO) is

excited to welcome champion swimmer Missy Franklin to its elite roster of athletes. Missy

Franklin is the first swimmer to join the GoPro team and will be featured in a GoPro original series called “Finding Missy,” offering a personal portrait of Missy the daughter, the student and as the world-class athlete.

“We are stoked to welcome Missy to the GoPro family,” said Todd Ballard, Vice President, Global Sports Entertainment Marketing at GoPro. “In addition to being one of the world’s most amazing athletes, Missy’s spirit is infectious. We know that Missy’s fans are a huge part of her journey, and we are excited to be able to give her a platform where she can connect with her fans on a

new level from a perspective that is entirely her own.”

After exploding onto the international scene in 2012, Missy Franklin became a countrywide sensation at just 16 years old. As a four-time Olympic gold medalist, world record holder in the 200-meter backstroke, eleven-time World Championships gold medalist and the winner of three NCAA individual titles in 2015 alone, Missy now prepares for perhaps her biggest summer yet. GoPro has enabled her to tell her story in her own words with the “Finding Missy” series. The two-part series, premiering April 11, will take viewers on

Missy’s journey from Hawaii for mental conditioning to Berkeley, California for a glimpse at her college life, and finally to Colorado for elite training.

“GoPro works with some really incredible athletes, and I love how they are able to capture the integrity and dedication of every single athlete they work with,” said Missy Franklin. “As someone who cares so deeply about my fans, GoPro has enabled me to connect with them in new, different ways and show them what I do on a daily basis. I want them to feel like they are on this journey with me.” Source: PR Newswire

World Class Swimmer Missy Franklin Joins The GoPro Family

Melissa Rauch & Haley Lu Richardson Discuss Their Latest Film Melissa Rauch is an east

coast native who began her career doing stand-up. She did a one-woman show playing Jenna Bush in “The Education of Jenna Bush” and later segued into television where she had a recurring role on “The Big Bang Theory” as well as guest appearances on “The Housewives of Orlando” and “True Blood.”

Her latest film is “The Bronze,” written by Melissa and her husband Winston Rauch. The story revolves around a former Olympic gymnast who competed with a ruptured Achilles heel, winning a Bronze medal for the U.S. Olympic Gymnastic team, and her subsequent unfulfilling life.

Haley Lu Richardson, who plays the fledgling gymnast, began her career as a dancer. Subsequently, she made guest appearance on several television programs including the long-running series - “Law & Order.” The rest of the cast includes Gary Cole, Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan, and Cecily Strong.

Rauch and Richardson recently sat down with a select group of journalists to discuss their latest film and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

Do you feel by writing this with your husband that it was a way of taking charge of your career?Melissa: I love writing so

there’s writing for the love of writing and getting the story out there. When Winston and I are writing, we have our writing hats on. I like taking control and not waiting on the industry. I’m not getting the roles in films that I want. I think writing is a great way to write yourself out of the box. There were people interested

in the script but wanted to cast someone else in the role of Hope. So, we held onto it and decided to do it ourselves on a shoestring budget. Ownership was important to us.

It took a while to get the movie out there. How did it finally happen?Melissa: We screened

at Sundance and eventually Sony Pictures Classics pick up the distribution rights.

What we see onscreen is a foul-mouthed, spoiled, very unlikeable brat. As the actress/writer, how

would you describe Hope?Melissa: Playing her

made me realize that she’s all talk on the outside and that under layers and layers of muck is her sweetness, but you have to chip away at it. She’s just doesn’t like herself very much. We could have made her a bit more likeable but decided not to.

Besides the USA Team warm-up suit, how

important were her bangs to the character?

Melissa: She had those bangs way past the time it was socially acceptable and those bangs are where she holds her pride. She doesn’t really know how to properly express herself, so she plays with her bangs.

How did your audition go?Haley: I was forty minutes

late and literally called my agent afterwards. I told him that if these people call you and tell you to drop me as a client, I would completely understand. I really screwed up.

Melissa: Haley taught me so much about acting that day. She has this monologue at the end of the movie. She started and then stopped

saying she was sorry.Haley: I skipped over my

lines and didn’t know what I was saying, so I had to stop.

Melissa: When she finally did it, it was perfect and when she left the room, we all said, “That’s our Maggie.”

Did you base your character on someone and how did you train for your gymnastic scenes?

Haley: I’m obsessed with Shawn Johnson.* I’ve always been obsessed with gymnastics. It’s my favorite sport in the Olympics. I watched a bunch of videos but as far as the physicality, I worked with a trainer and trained for a month getting the body, the stance, and the hand movements. I’m a dancer and something that I really didn’t know until I was working with my trainer is that the form is very different. Gymnasts are very strong and tight and compact while dancers are long and fluid. It was really hard for me not to have ballet arms while I was running and doing cartwheels.

Melissa: Her hands literally ripped open from hanging on the bars.

Haley: The rite of passage for gymnasts.

Hope does a lot of nasty things to Maggie. As the character, did she ever suspect her motives?Haley: Maggie considered

everything Hope said as gold coming out of her mouth.

What was it like having to eat all that junk food?Melissa: It was sitting

around and eating cold French fries. Actually, people had set up lawn chairs to watch us.

During the shoot, did you make any script changes?

Melissa: Yes. There were some long days – shooting 14 or 15 hours. A lot of times we didn’t have money to shoot at certain locations, so we would go home and do a rewrite of a particular scene. Some of the obstacles you face end up informing your creative decisions.

Do you have a favorite film?Melissa: “All About Eve”

is my all-time favorite film. I watched it again recently. It’s incredible how it still holds up.

What advice would you give to people who want to get into the television

or film business? Melissa: If they want to

go into the film or TV business, if there’s any part of you that likes to write, you should try to create your own stuff. Most people in this business love it. It’s their passion as well as a job. So, there’s a sadness that comes along with it when you’re not given the opportunity to work.

(The PR rep signals the end of the interview.)

Good luck with your film.Melissa & Haley:

Thank you.

*Shawn Machel Johnson is the 2008 Olympic balance beam gold medalist and team, all-around and floor exercise silver medalist.

By Desert Star StaffThe Paris and Brussels

attacks have rightly caused outrage across the globe. However, while millions in the West took to social media to share their grief, there are numerous attacks across the world that go largely unreported in the mainstream media.

NIGERIA – Over 80 killed, children burned to death

On January 30, Boko Haram terrorists killed 86 people after they attacked a village in northeast Nigeria. The assault took place on the outskirts of the city of Maiduguri, which is the birthplace of the Islamist militant group.

Citing an eyewitness who managed to survive the attack, AP reported that Boko Haram extremists firebombed huts. The survivor said that he had heard the screams of children burning to death from a hiding place in a tree.

There is a real bias against media coverage of terrorist

attacks in Africa, and especially in Nigeria,” Max Abrahms, assistant professor of political science at Northeastern University in Boston, told RT.

“I think many people would be surprised to know how much killing power the main terrorist group Boko Haram has,” he said, adding that if such attacks were carried out against people in European or North American countries, “there would be much more media coverage.”

IRAQ – 29 dead after ISIS suicide bomber

strikes football match Iraq is doing its best to try

and return to some semblance of normality following the violence that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has brought to parts of the country. However, on Friday, three days after the Brussels attacks, at least 29 people were killed at a football match south of the capital, Baghdad.

“They were just handing the trophy to the winners, the suicide attacker blew

himself up in the crowd,” Al-Asriya, a police captain from the village, told AFP. The match was taking place at a small stadium in the town of Iskanderiyah located 50 kilometers south of Baghdad.

Earlier in March, an IS attack killed 60 people when a truck rigged with explosives slammed into a security checkpoint near the southern Iraqi city of Hilla, according to Reuters.

PAKISTAN – Easter suicide bomb kills 70Taliban faction Jamaat-

ul-Ahrar claimed responsibility for Sunday’s suicide blast outside a public park in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore that killed at least 70 people and injured more than 280, many of whom were women and children.

“The targets were Christians,” Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the faction, said, threatening that more attacks in the region would follow.

This was Pakistan’s

deadliest attack since the December 2014 massacre of 134 school children at a military-run academy in the city of Peshawar that prompted a large-scale government crackdown on Islamist militants.

SYRIA – ISIS massacres dozens in morning

rush hour On February 21, a series

of explosions rocked a district of the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing at least 83 people. Two suicide bombers, who were linked to Islamic State, carried out the attack.

The first explosion was a car bomb that targeted a busy school street in the Sayeda Zeinab district during rush hour. The blast was followed by two explosions allegedly carried out by suicide bombers wearing explosive belts, and targeted the crowds gathered at the site of the tragedy.

The attacks claimed the lives of at least 83 people, according to local media, while at least 178 were injured,

many of them severely.LEBANON – ISIS strike Shiite stronghold a day

before Paris attacks A day before the Paris

attacks, two suicide bombers struck in the Lebanese capital of Beruit, killing at least 43 people, with a further 240 people injured. Islamic State claimed responsibility, with members of the militant group blowing up a motorbike with explosives in the middle of a street.

The first blast took place outside a Shiite Mosque, while a second blast, also in the early evening, occurred near a bakery. A second bomb reportedly went off seven minutes later as passers-by tried to help those injured in the initial blast.

A potential third attacker was killed before he managed to blow himself up. He was found dead with his legs torn off but still wearing an explosives’ belt, a Lebanese security official reported, according to AP.

“Mr. Lewandowski is absolutely innocent of this charge,” Trump said. “He will enter a plea of not guilty and looks forward to his day in court. He is completely confident that he will be exonerated.”

It’s not the first time Trump has defended his campaign manager against Fields’ complaint. The incident occurred at a time when the real estate mogul was facing increasing scrutiny for violence at his campaign rallies.

The incident also led to the resignations of both Fields and Breitbart News editor-at-large Ben Shapiro from the conservative website, accusing the outlet of being biased in favor of Trump. Two other reporters ‒ national

security correspondent Jordan Schachtel and editor Jarrett Stepman ‒ followed them out the door the next day.

Lewandowski is also accused of manhandling a protester at a different rally.

“That was somebody else pulling him. I mean, I get ‒ I give him credit for having spirit. He wanted them to take down those horrible profanity-laced signs,” Trump told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos at the time.

Why It’s Important to Carve Your Own IdentityBy Desert Star Staff

As a society, we sometimes tend to put people in boxes and narrow an individual’s character to a single label -- especially if he or she is different from us.

While accepting the labels people apply to us seems only natural at times; doing so can be limiting. However, when you defy labels, you can set the tone for your own life, say experts. Here are a few things to consider:

Labels Start Early: As early as kindergarten, labels are used at school to define children. Teachers label students according to skills, abilities and behavior. Children label other students according to social status.

At such a young age, children often internalize these general ideas about themselves; and overcoming the idea that one is a “slow learner” or a “dork” can be an uphill battle. Without a bit of will, a label can be a

self-fulfilling prophecy.Descriptions vs. Labels:

Describing people, places and things is a big part of how we communicate. But there’s a difference between providing valuable or specific information about someone, and simply labeling them. Evaluate your words and see if you can stick to facts and insights. You can help others define themselves but not participating in labeling.

Defying Labels: Most everyone has been labeled at some point. However, labels are not only applied to people, but also to the cars we drive and the homes we live in. For example, ever since the first MINI car was built in 1959, it has been called many things.

“People have put labels on the MINI brand for years. We`ve been called the ‘small car’ or the ‘cute car,’” says Tom Noble, department head, MINI Brand communications.

Noble says that while the brand has acknowledged those labels, they’ve also sought to

innovate and have defied them in certain ways -- and this has led to product innovation.

In that spirit of self-definition, MINI has launched the Defy Labels contest. Anyone can nominate himself or others who have defied labels in a bold and powerful way. After the nomination period, there will be a series of votes to determine finalists and a winner. The winner gets a two-year lease on the new MINI Clubman.

“The contest isn’t about rebellion, but rather about creating your own path regardless of the labels you’ve been given; a concept the MINI brand understands and embodies,” says Noble.

To learn more about the contest, visit mini-defylabels.com or follow the conversation at #DefyLabels.

Shedding Labels: Whether you’re with friends or foes, family or strangers, you’ll likely have to deal with being

labeled by others. And the longer you’ve known someone, the harder it can be to shed the one-word conceptions they have about you.

In the face of having others define you, being true to oneself isn’t always easy, but it can be done. Consider the labels assigned to you. If you don’t agree with them, defy them. It may take others time to notice the change, but it can be worth the effort. StatePoint

preliminary hearing is scheduled Monday for a convicted felon accused of killing two people and wounding three during an unexplained hour-long rampage in the Banning Pass.

James Paul Diaz, 34, of Hemet was arrested last Sept. 26 following attacks in Banning and Beaumont.

Diaz is charged with two counts each of first-degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment and three counts of assault with a firearm.

A special circumstance allegation of taking multiple lives in the same crime could make him eligible for the death penalty if he’s convicted and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office elects to pursue capital punishment.

Monday’s hearing at the Banning Justice Center will determine whether there’s sufficient evidence to warrant a trial for Diaz, who is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.

According to investigators, the rampage began about 11:30 in the morning in the

700 block of East John Street in Banning, where the defendant allegedly opened fire with a shotgun, striking two men sitting in a vehicle.’

One of the victims, 66-year-old Paul Lesh, was dead by the time officers arrived to investigate the shots-fired call. His friend, whose identity was withheld, suffered minor wounds, according to police.

Witnesses described the shooter’s vehicle as a white SUV.

Banning police Chief Alex Diaz -- no relation to the defendant -- said that a little under 15 minutes later, there was another vehicle-to-vehicle shooting near the intersection of San Gorgonio Avenue and Nicolet Street.

The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, told police that a man in a white SUV had fired a shotgun through his windshield, shattering it and leaving him cut by the broken glass.

The man was treated for minor injuries and recovered. Ten minutes later, Banning police officers responded to a report of an assault with a

deadly weapon at a gas station near 22nd and Ramsey streets.

The victim told officers he was inside his parked vehicle when an unknown assailant stepped alongside, began throwing punches, and struck him with an object.

The man was not seriously injured. Again, the suspect was said to have fled in a white SUV, according to police.

At 12:13 p.m., Banning police were called to the 200 block of East Lincoln Street, where a vehicle had crashed into a wall outside a city vehicle yard.

Officers found 34-year-old Benjamin Johnson shot to death inside the vehicle.

Witnesses reported an SUV racing away from the location, and Beaumont police, sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers were alerted.

About 12:20 p.m., Beaumont police officers received a call that a man fitting the defendant’s description was knocking on doors in the 700 block of American Street, trying to get residents to open up.

Tara Shawn Ruehle was

in her car, getting ready to leave her house in the 1300 block of Eighth Street with her two young children, when Diaz allegedly ripped off a door handle and banged furiously on the car.

``I could tell that he was manic and crazy,’’ Ruehle said later. ``He told me that his kids were in the car and that I had his kids. And I had no idea who he was. I had never met him before.’’ Ruehle and her children were not injured.

By the time officers responded to her 911 call, the convicted felon had fled, but his white GMC Suburban was spotted moments later, and he stopped when officers signaled him to pull over, according to investigators.

Diaz was arrested without incident, and a shotgun was seized from his SUV, investigators said.

The defendant did not know any of the victims, according to police. He has prior felony convictions for shooting at an occupied dwelling and battery resulting in great bodily injury. Source KMIR

is issuing an alert today to payroll and human resources professionals to beware of an emerging phishing email scheme that purports to be from company executives and requests personal information on employees.

The IRS has learned this scheme – part of the surge in phishing emails seen this year – already has claimed several victims as payroll and human resources offices mistakenly email payroll data including Forms W-2 that contain Social Security numbers and other personally identifiable information to cybercriminals posing as company executives.

“This is a new twist on an old scheme using the cover of the tax season and W-2 filings to try tricking people into sharing personal data. Now the criminals are focusing their schemes on company payroll departments,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “If your CEO appears to be emailing you for a list of company employees, check it out before you respond. Everyone has a responsibility to remain diligent about confirming the identity of people requesting personal information about employees.”

IRS Criminal Investigation already is reviewing several cases in which people have been tricked into sharing SSNs with what turned out to be cybercriminals. Criminals using personal information stolen elsewhere

seek to monetize data, including by filing fraudulent tax returns for refunds.

This phishing variation is known as a “spoofing” email. It will contain, for example, the actual name of the company chief executive officer. In this variation, the “CEO” sends an email to a company payroll office employee and requests a list of employees and information including SSNs.

The following are some of the details contained in the e-mails:

• Kindly send me the individual 2015 W-2 (PDF) and earnings summary of all W-2 of our company staff for a quick review

• Can you send me the

updated list of employees with full details (Name, Social Security Number, Date of Birth, Home Address, Salary) as at 2/2/2016.

• I want you to send me the list of W-2 copy of employees wage and tax statement for 2015, I need them in PDF file type, you can send it as an attachment. Kindly prepare the lists and email them to me asap.

The IRS recently renewed a wider consumer alert for e-mail schemes after seeing an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents so far this tax season and other reports of scams targeting others in a wider tax community.

The emails are designed

to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software companies. The phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics. E-mails can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal information, ordering transcripts and verifying PIN information.

If you suspect that you have been targeted in a W-2 phishing scheme, you should immediately report the incident to your local IRS Criminal Investigation office. If you are in the Los Angeles area, the number to call is (213) 576-3232.

would have thought that a ‘white canvas painting’ three feet by four

feet without a frame, could wreak such comedy havoc between three old friends? That in a nutshell is the gist of the story of the blisteringly funny comedy ‘ART’, written by Iranian-born, but French-raised, Tony Award winning-playwright Yasmina Reza.

English playwright Christopher Hampton (who works on all of Reza’s plays) provides ‘ART’, with not only a witty, and insightful translation, he delivers a script chock full of biting dialogue for the sensational trio of gifted actors: Chuck Yates (Marc), Larry Raben (Serge), and David Engle (Ivan) spin his words into theatrical gold under the deft direction of Don Amendolia.

‘ART’ is a story that crosses generational lines, international borders and multi-cultures, that resonates with people everywhere because we have all seen our friends and relatives in situations the three characters find themselves in, despite the fact that it’s set in Paris. The play is not just about a painting; it’s about how we react when our friends’ secret agendas bubble up from their subconscious when they’re innocently asked for an opinion. The meat of the play unfolds in the interaction of these three friends and is a favorite device

in many of Reza’s plays like ‘God of Carnage’, another of her Tony-winning plays.

In ‘ART’, Serge, a divorced, successful dermatologist and a culture-driven art collector, has purchased a painting for $50,000 dollars and can’t wait to share his purchase with Marc his best friend of fifteen years. Marc has always fancied himself as Serge’s mentor in all things cultural. In the past, Serge usually consulted with Marc before making a purchase; this time, he didn’t. He made a spur-of-the-moment- decision and now is eager to get Marc’s approval.

Marc can best be described as an anal-retentive, irritating nitpicker who has a gift for always being right and enjoys the rough and tumble of these spirited exchanges with Serge and Ivan, or anyone else who will listen to him spout-off. When he and Serge discuss the painting, Marc is appalled, not only at the priced Serge paid for it, but he disses the painting as utter crap, forcing Serge to defend his purchase. The result is both men agree, after verbally fencing and insulting one another, to see what Ivan thinks of it.

Ivan is not the cultural or monetary equal of Serge or Marc. He is a middle-class working type who has just begun a job in a stationery store owned by his future father-in-law. The three despite their backgrounds, however, are compatible best friends.

The beauty of this stellar production lies in the performances of its three extremely talented actors and the deliciously incendiary dialogue of playwright Reza. Just when one thinks that all the one-upmanship lines each actor hurls to the other, that the final salvo has been fired, another round of sparkling, zinger-laden put-downs begins all over again. I’ve seen four professional productions of ‘ART’ over the years and I wouldn’t exchange this trio for any who have performed

Reza’s lacerating comedy of male friendship and honesty.

Director Amendolia keeps the pace crackling and wisely allows his three stars to flesh out and mine every comedy nugget to the fullest. It’s a terrifically entertaining comedy production that also affords the audience time to absorb what is taking place on stage, and to reflect upon its deeper and more sobering meanings.

“ART’’s creative team led by director Amendolia delivers solid technical support from set designer Josh Clabaugh,

and a tricky lighting design by Moira Wilkie (who just created the lighting design for CV REP’s ‘I Am My Own Wife’ which I saw last week), required to see the costumes designed by Bonnie Nipar. This splendid production should not be missed by Coachella Valley audiences.

The production performs at the Annenberg Theatre, Palm Springs, and runs through April 3, 2016. For reservations and ticket information call the box office at 760-318-0024.
