What is Wind Energy? As stated by Wik ipedia , wind is the f low of gases on a large scale. On ear th , i t consists of the bulk movement of a i r. Fol lowed by what i t i s in outer space, p lanetar y . . .etc.

For us though, i t consists of the bulk movement of a i r. They are commonly c lass i f ied by their spat ia l scale, their speed, the t ype of forces that cause them, the regions in which they occur, and their ef fec t .

To mention some; gust which is a sudden, br ief increase in speed at least 16 k nots and durat ion less than 20 seconds. Strong winds of intermediate durat ion (around one minute) are cal led squal ls . Breeze, gale, s torm, hurr icane and t yphoon are of long- durat ion and with di f ferent average strength.

The hor izontal ax is wind turbine has the rotor shaf t and the generator shaf t in a hor izontal posit ion and point ing into the wind. The rotor and the generator are both on top of the tower or mast . I t has a yaw dr ive assembly that a l lows the turbine to face direc t ly into the wind.

Smal l turbines use a wind vane to point into the wind. Large turbines use wind sensor in combinat ion with ser vo motor to do the job. When pointed into the wind, the wind power turns the wind-blades and with i t the rotor. I n smal l turbines the rotor shaf t i s

d i rec t ly connec ted to the generator whi le in large turbines i t i s connec ted through a gearbox to speed up to rotat ion of the e lec tr ica l generator.

HAW Ts come in t wo t ypes the upwind and the downwind machines. The upwind t ype is the t radit ional ever y day vers ion where the blades are at the wind s ide. The downwind t ype receives the wind in the back of the blades. I t needs no addit ional mechanism to keep i t in l ine with the wind. But i t i s vulnerable to fat igue fa i lures due to c ycl ica l turbulence behind the mast .

Ver t ica l ax is wind turbines have their main axis perpendicular to the ground. The generators and gearboxes can be mounted c lose the ground. VAW T per form wel l in both rural and urban surroundings.

They per form better than hor izontal ax is in places where there are a lot of tur-bulences. They are not af fec ted by wind direc t ions, the wind may blow from any direc t ion. No yaw mechanism is needed.

They can be mounted on top of the roof. They are s imple to insta l l and easy to maintain . Their operat ion is quiet .

At low speed winds t radit ional hor i -zontal ax is wind turbines are more ef -f ic ient . But at h igh wind speeds, VAW Ts can be 7 to 8 t imes more ef f ic ient than hor izontal ax is .

They can withstand much higher wind speeds to about 140mph and st i l l producing power. And they have a nice appearance.

I f you’re l ike many Amer i -cans, you have recent ly made home improve -

ments to lessen your impac t on the environment. Whi le you’ve a l ready taken big str ides toward saving energy - and money - you can conser ve even more by mak-ing sure your new systems are running at peak ef f ic ienc y.

Whether you recent ly outf i t -ted your home with solar panels or invested in a new heat ing system or water heater, here are some t ips to make sure you are saving energy at the highest capacit y.

S olar panelsSolar panels capture f ree

energy f rom the sun, but they can lose a lot of their capacit y i f they aren’t c leaned regular ly. Depending upon where you l ive and other var iable condit ions, you may need to c lean panels as of ten as once a month. A dir t y panel can reduce the ef f ic ienc y of an ent i re ar ray by up to 40 percent . S ince panels can some -t imes be hard to reach, you may want to consider invest ing in a c leaning system l ike M r. Long-Arm’s Pro Cur ve Solar Cleaning K it , which a l lows you to reach and c lean di f f icult- to -access panels .

The system features t wo unique c leaning tools , a washer/squeegee that attaches to a cur ved ex tension pole as wel l as an ex tendable f low thru pole and c leaning brush that can be attached to a garden hose. To v iew videos on how to c lean solar panels , v is i t w w w.mrlong-arm.com.

Heating systemsA new energy- ef f ic ient heat-

ing system only gets you par t of the way to opt imal ef f ic ienc y. Before the heat ing season star ts each year, you should make sure your HVAC f i l ters and vents are c leaned, as you wi l l see an immediate loss in ef f ic ienc y i f there is any block age.

Another aspec t of heat ing ef f ic ienc y has nothing to do with your heat ing system. Mak-ing sure your home is proper ly sealed and insulated can save you up to 20 percent on energy costs, according to the U.S . De -par tment of Energy ’s Energy Star program.

Water heatersNo matter how large your

home or your fami ly, you can

eas i ly make your water heater more ef f ic ient by turning down the temperature on the unit to 120 degrees F. The lower temperature means the heater doesn’t work as hard, and your water wi l l s t i l l be hot enough to take a bath or wash dishes.

You may a lso want to con-s ider a tank less water heater, which only heats the water when i t ’s demanded. These sys-tems a lso take up less space in your ut i l i t y room by running the cold water through heated coi ls before i t goes through the pipes to your s ink or shower.

I f you’ve a l ready taken steps to become energy- ef f ic ient , you understand the benef i ts . By mak ing your current sys-tems even more ef fec t ive and economical , you can see even greater rewards for going green.

B iopics, as they are k nown in the industr y,

are only as good as the subjec ts under scrut iny.  When the subjec t i s the Pres ident of Braz i l , South Amer ica’s largest countr y and the produc t ion company mak ing the f i lm, L .C . Barreto, the legendar y f i f t y-year o ld Braz i l ian movie produc t ion company, i t ’s a given that ex tra care and attent ion wi l l be paid to the projec t .   The f i lm, based on the book “Lula , the Son of Braz i l ” by Denise Parana (who a lso is the co -screenwriter a long with Daniel Tendler and Fernando Bonass i ) , i s Braz i l ’s 2010 O ff ic ia l Entr y for the 2010 Academy Awards.

The movie, under the careful and creat ive eye of long t ime direc tor Fabio Barreto, i s set against the backdrop of the1940’s , to 70’s Braz i l , and is chock ful l of interest ing charac ters and incidents that char t the course of the man.  Born into a humble, pover t y-str icken fami ly as Luis I nacio da S i lva in 1945, we exper ience his r ise through Brazi l ’s union movement, as “Lula”, and to the highest of f ice in the land – The Pres idenc y.  “Lula” i s h is boyhood nick name and one that u l t imately became k nown throughout a l l of Braz i l .

          The movie

chronic les the ef for ts of Braz i l ’s more than for t y-mi l l ion poor and disenfranchised work ing c lass c i t izen’s as they seek upward mobi l i t y and a better l i fe.   Lula soon becomes the champion of the work ing c lass.   He becomes a popul ist Union leader among people whose yearnings for “a place at the economic table” have gone unanswered under a ser ies of d ic tatorships, for more than t went y years.

Boast ing a cast of 128 speak ing roles, the f i lm comes v iv idly a l ive under the sk i l led hand of d i rec tor Barreto, as he orchestrates the por trayals of some of Braz i l ’s f inest ac tors.   I n the pivotal and key role of Dona L indu, Lula’s mother, Glor ia Pi res del ivers a   haunt ing, nuanced, compassionate per formance.   The “ fami ly ” in Lat in culture is a l l - impor tant and no one is more inf luent ia l in Lula’s ear ly l i fe than his mother.

I n suppor t ing roles : the lovely Cleo Pi res, the real l i fe daughter of Glor ia , p lays Lula’s f i rst wi fe Lurdes, who succumbs in chi ldbir th ; M i lhem Cor taz por trays Ar ist ides, Lula’s a lcohol ic and abusive father ; Sostennes Vidal i s Lula’s brother Z iza ; Jul iana Baroni i s M ar isa

Let ic ia , the I ta l ian widow who becomes Lula’s second wife ; and Marcos Cesana is C laudio Feitosa the Union leader Lula replaces.   They are sol id in their suppor t .

I ’ve purposely lef t the best for last .  Union leader Lula , and ult imately Pres ident Lula is a larger than l i fe indiv idual , and according to Producer Paula Barreto, …” required an ac tor of except ional sk i l l s to por tray the popular former Pres ident with bel ievabi l i t y and pass ion, whi le at the same t ime, not give the audience merely an impersonat ion per formance”.   “ The ac tor ”, she cont inued, “ must infuse his own personal i t y into the charac ter and come up with an accurate yet compel l ing per formance”.  Not an easy task . However, more than equal to the chal lenge is Rui R icardo Diaz , a handsome and gi f ted stage ac tor mak ing his f i lm debut por traying one of h is countr y ’s most char ismatic indiv iduals .

I n a s ide bar note, concerning the produc t ion, the ac tor or iginal ly cast as Lula lef t the produc t ion just 30 days pr ior to when the cameras were set to rol l .   That ’s precious l i t t le t ime to f ind a replacement ac tor for such an impor tant role.   The wheels of f i lm produc t ion, however, gr ind away no matter the problems.     I t was ner vous t ime for a l l concerned. For tunately, one of the cast ing execut ives not iced Diaz , who had been cast in a smal ler ro le, and sa id to di rec tor Barreto and

producer Paula Barreto “ why spend dol lars and t ime look ing for a new Lula , when you a l ready have him r ight here in your cast?”  Such is the role that luck and serendipit y play in the careers of many per formers.

Diaz as Lula , del ivers a h ighly sensit ive and intel l igent per formance that runs the gamut of emotions f rom eager young student , to gr ieving husband and widower, to a reborn and determined, but compassionate, union organizer, to the popular Pres ident of one of the wor ld ’s largest countr ies.  I t ’s a t r iumphant journey for Diaz in what is a career- mak ing f i rst f i lm role.  Remember, Peter O ’ Toole was f i rst introduced to wor ld c inema audiences as “Lawrence of Arabia”, and he is st i l l per forming to this day.

For those indiv iduals interested in the technical detai ls of moviemak ing: the f i lm was shot in just e ight weeks, with a post-produc t ion schedule of only 14 weeks.   I n large canvas produc t ions such as this f i lm, post-produc t ion rat ios usual ly run one month for ever y week of f i lm shot .   L .C . Barreto and i ts creat ive team can take a bow for a produc t ion wel l done and highly enter ta ining.   According to producer Barreto, “Our f i lm is not sole ly an ‘Ar t House f i lm’.   Our f i lm appeals to a universal audience due to the scope of the pic ture and i ts subjec t matter ”.

Look for “Lula , The Son of Braz i l ”  in theatres later this year.   New York Fi lm is the distr ibutor handl ing the f i lm.

I have a controvers ia l confess ion to make: M y grandfather was an i l legal a l ien.

I t d idn’t used to be controvers ia l . I t d idn’t even used to be interest-ing. O ther people a lways had way better anecdotes about their granddads than I d id, s ince mine died before I was born, so I had no personal stor ies to te l l about him. But late ly, that fac t has become quite controvers ia l , and maybe even, uncomfor table for me.

Though my grandfa-ther came to this coun-tr y i l legal ly in the hope of f inding a better l i fe than he could in his b i r th countr y, he marr ied a le -gal res ident , and eventu-al ly received U.S . c i t izen-ship. St i l l , i f the bel iefs touted in my home state of Ar izona today had been around then, the government might have declared his marr iage a sham. I f Ar izona had had i ts way decades ago, with i ts demand to repeal the Four teenth Amendment — which declares that any chi ld born on U.S . soi l automatical ly receives c i t izenship — my moth-er might not have been recognized as a c i t izen, and she could have been depor ted to the countr y she’d never seen. Even more impor tant ly, I would not have existed.

I t ’s hard to think of yoursel f as never having been born. I t ’s equal ly

hard to accept that oth-ers might not see you as belonging in the countr y you regard as a centra l par t of your ident i fy. I ’m a proud Amer ican, an in-formed voter and I th ink I ’ve made valuable con-tr ibut ions to our societ y. But the laws and bel iefs of too many in my home state would have denied my fami ly three genera-t ions of mak ing those contr ibut ions.

Don’t get me wrong- other than sometimes dr iv ing with a lead foot , I fo l low the law. I bel ieve a nat ion has a r ight to secure i ts borders, and I don’t th ink people should be cross ing them i l legal -ly. I ’m aware that i t could present a threat to our nat ional secur i t y. But I a lso bel ieve in the words on the Statute of L iber t y, Give me your t i red, your poor, your huddled mass-es yearning to breathe f ree. Surely that descr ibes most of the poor wretch-es who i l legal ly cross our borders. I a lso understand that immigrat ion is a com-plex issue. I f we didn’t cre -ate a demand for cheap labor, i f we didn’t have so many low- end jobs that most Amer icans don’t want to do, would people keep streaming into the U.S . for that work? I f we didn’t have cheap labor-ers to pick our lettuce, would we be paying ten bucks a head instead of a dol lar or t wo?

I a lso have to won-der i f i t matters that my

grandfather ’s name was Pat O ’Br ien not Juan Go -mez, that he came here i l legal ly f rom I re land, not Mexico. That h is sk in was fa i r, not brown. That he spoke Engl ish f rom the moment he stepped i l -legal ly of f that merchant vessel that docked in New York . I s that what ’s at the root of the ant i - immigrant fever?

Maybe, maybe not . Whi le I ’ve never fe l t any scorn as a result of my ethnic i t y, h istor y te l ls us that when the I r ish were streaming into this countr y in great num-bers, they were a lso re -v i led, that post ings for jobs of ten read, “No I r ish Need Apply.” Maybe the anger we’re seeing today is s imply the in i t iat ion r i te we demand of ever y group that comes to this countr y, before we accept them as our own. Or may-be i t ’s s imply that in bad economic t imes, we need to blame someone else for our t roubles.

Granted, ever y group reshapes our countr y a l i t -t le. And change threatens some people, and threat-ened people come out f ight ing. But do we real ly want to deny ourselves the work that today ’s mi-grants, documented and other wise, per form, not to mention to the contr i -but ions they and their de -scendants might make for generat ions to come?

I don’t . But maybe I don’t get a vote.

The new year i s a great t ime to make some resolut ions to keep your sk in , hair and nai ls healthy. Your dermatologist can help you with these resolut ions. Dermatolo -gists are medical doc tors who have ex tensive t ra ining, exper ience and pass ion for keeping sk in , hair, and nai ls healthy throughout a person’s l i fet ime. Here are 10 t ips to keep you healthy look ing f rom head to toe.

Protec t yoursel f f rom the sun. Help prevent s igns of aging, such as age spots and f ine l ines, as wel l as s igni f icant ly decrease your r isk of developing sk in cancer by us-ing sunscreen, wear ing protec-t ive c lothing (a long-s leeved shir t , pants, wide -br immed hat , sunglass-es) and seek ing shade when appro -pr iate. Choose a sunscreen with a Sun Protec t ion Fac tor (SPF) of at least 30 and broad-spec trum pro -tec t ion (protec ts against u l t raviolet A and ult raviolet B rays) .

Do not use tanning beds. Ult ra-v iolet l ight f rom the sun and tan-ning beds can cause sk in cancer and wr ink l ing. I f you want to look l ike you’ve been in the sun, consider us-ing a sunless se l f - tanning produc t (such as a lot ion, foam or spray) , but cont inue to use sunscreen with i t .

Per form a sk in sel f - exam. Ex-amining your sk in for suspic ious moles and other les ions could save your l i fe. Use the Amer ican Acad-emy of Dermatology ’s body mole map, located at w w w.melanoma-monday.org, to record your moles and learn how to per form a proper sk in exam. I f you f ind a suspic ious les ion, make an appointment to see a dermatologist .

Don’t sk ip the hair condit ioner.

Dermatologists recommend using a condit ioner af ter ever y shampoo. Whi le a condit ioner cannot repair hair, i t can increase shine, decrease stat ic e lec tr ic i t y, improve strength, and of fer some protec t ion f rom harmful UV rays.

Eat a healthy diet . A diet r ich in f resh vegetables, f ru i ts , whole grains and other healthy foods can lead to healthier sk in . Be sure to include some lean protein in your diet . Our sk in is made of protein , so some protein is necessar y for healthy sk in .

I f your sk in feels dr y, moistur-ize. Af ter bathing is the best t ime to moistur ize so that you can trap water in the sk in . I f your sk in st i l l feels dr y with regular moistur iz ing af ter bathing, apply moistur izer a few t imes throughout the day.

Stop smok ing. People who smoke expose their sk in to toxins that accelerate the aging of their sk in . And, the repeat pucker ing to inhale can cause deep l ines around the l ips. Frequent squint ing to avoid gett ing smoke in one’s eyes can cause not iceable crow ’s feet .

Manage stress. To keep your sk in look ing i ts best , i t i s impor tant to ef fec t ively manage stress. Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your sk in , hair and nai ls . I t can worsen many sk in condit ions, inc luding psor ia-s is , acne and rosacea, cause br i t t le nai ls and r idging of the nai ls , and lead to hair loss.

Don’t b i te your f ingernai ls . You can transfer infec t ious organisms bet ween your f ingers and mouth. Also, nai l b i t ing can damage the sk in around your f ingers, a l lowing infec t ions to enter.

I f you have acne, do not pick , pop or squeeze the blemishes. Peo -ple mistakenly bel ieve that pick ing and popping pimples wi l l get r id of them quick ly. The t ruth is doing any of these can i r r i tate the sk in , make acne worse, and increase the r isk of scarr ing.

For more healthy sk in , hair and nai l t ips, v is i t the Amer ican Acad-emy of Dermatology ’s website at w w w.aad.org.

OK , so you purchased new running shoes, jo ined a gym, and are ready for a f i t and healthy 2011. But whi le gett ing in shape and los ing weight is an admirable New Year ’s resolut ion for you and your fami ly, i t ’s impor tant to remember that peo -ple aren’t the only ones who might need to shed a few pounds. The num-ber of over weight pets in Amer ica cont inues to r ise. Near ly hal f (45 percent) of dogs and 58 percent of cats are over weight or obese (at least 20 percent above ideal weight) , ac-cording to a recent sur vey of veter inar ians by the Associat ion for Pet Obe -s i t y Prevent ion.

“Pet owners might mistakenly think that a pudgy dog or cat i s cute, without real iz ing this ex-tra weight puts the pet at a greater r isk for develop -ing ser ious health prob -lems, inc luding ar thr i t is and diabetes,” says Dr. Grace Long, a veter inar-ian with Nest le Pur ina. “But the good news is that with proper nutr i t ion and exerc ise, pet obesit y can be reversed.”

Pet owners need to remember, however, that

whi le their weight loss success rests largely in their own hands, paws don’t have the same pow-er. I f pets are to be suc-cessful at gett ing in bet-ter shape - and health - their owners need to inter vene. For tunately, concerned pet owners can star t the New Year of f on the r ight foot . I n 2010, Dr. M eredith Rett inger, a vet-er inar ian with Laurel Pet Hospita l in West Hol ly-wood, Cal i f. , super vised a group of e ight over weight dogs and their owners as they par t ic ipated in Proj -ec t : Pet S l im Down - a 90-day weight loss journey documented onl ine at p ro j e c t p e t s l i m d ow n . co m . Dr. Rett inger current ly i s overseeing a s imi lar 120-day journey for dogs and cats and their owners. Projec t : Pet S l im Down is a nat ionwide program from Pur ina Veter inar y Di-ets that unites pet owners and veter inar ians in help -ing pets lose weight .

Dr. Rett inger of fers f ive s imple guidel ines, “2011 Weight Loss Resolu-t ions for Your Pet ,” to help you - work ing with your veter inar ian - help your pet l ive a leaner, healthier l i fe.

Resolution 1: Make an appointment with your veter inar ian. Just as peo -ple need exper t guidance and a physic ian’s super vi -s ion when attempting to lose weight and/or im-prove their f i tness level , veter inar ians have the k nowledge to help pet owners achieve sensible, last ing weight loss for their pets.

Resolution 2 : Set re -a l ist ic , measurable ex-erc ise and weight loss goals . Your veter inar ian can help you rule out any medical reasons for ex-cess weight and help you plan a f i tness and nutr i -t ion program that takes your pet ’s age, s ize and breed into account .

Resolution 3: Disc i -pl ine yoursel f to make exerc ise a pr ior i t y for you and your pet . Sure, our l ives are gett ing busier and we have less t ime to exerc ise, but even sett ing as ide t ime each day for shor t walks with your pet wi l l help both of you.

Resolution 4: Control por t ions. Just as l imit ing intake is impor tant to your own weight loss goals , ensur ing a dai ly volume of a l lowed food for your

pet wi l l be key to success. Your veter inar ian can te l l you the exac t amount of food to feed your pet each day to achieve a healthy weight , so you don’t have to guess. He or she a lso wi l l remind you not to say “ I love you” with food.

Resolution 5: Use t reats correc t ly. I t ’s OK to reward your pet with a t reat for a successful ly completed task . Just re -member that these calo -r ies need to be subtrac t-ed f rom the total ca lor ies a l lotted for the day, and they shouldn’t exceed 10 percent of that a l lotment. Consider low- calor ie t reats, or break t reats into smal ler p ieces for more rewards with the same amount of ca lor ies.

For more information on Projec t : Pet S l im Down, go to projec tpets l im-down.com or v is i t them on Facebook . Pur ina Vet-er inar y Diets recent ly do -nated $1 for ever y “L ike” to Adopt-A-Pet .com’s Vet-er inar y Care Fund, ra is ing $50,000 to help homeless pets. “L ike Us” to help cont inue spreading the word about pet obesit y.
