Description of Garment: Checkered Shirt Manufacturer: Ralph Lauren RN#: 41381 Care Label Instructions: Machine Wash Problem: These shirts contain a red and black checkered design. When laundered as instructed by the care label, the black

yarns may disintegrate throughout the shirt. Responsibility: The manufacturer’s. The black yarns are sulfur

dyed. When sulfur dyes are not properly neutralized after the dyeing process, a sulfuric acid build-up takes place on the yarns. The heat and mechanical action found in the laundering process activates the sulfuric acid, causing the affected yarns to disintegrate.

Drycleaner/Launderer: Advise the customer that this shirt may fail in the

laundering process due to the defective nature of the dyestuffs.

Recommendation: We have advised Ralph Lauren of the above-

mentioned problem. They have agreed to facilitate any claims concerning this shirt. If this shirt fails when laundered in accordance with the care label instructions, contact Alan Spielvogel at the N.C.A. 212-967-3002
