Notes for Edward Herndon:He was born about 1678 in New Kent Co., Virginia but as a result of the creation of new counties, his home in St. Stephen's Parish was from 1691 to 1728 in King and Queen Co., and thereafter in Caroline Co., Virginia. On November 9, 1739, Edward Herndon was paid, out of the County levy, 60 pounds of tobacco "for erecting posts with inscriptions along the roadside." This is one of the early references in American records to the erection of signposts for the guidance of travelers.

Notes for William Herndon:The 1860 Census shows William living in Palatka, Putnam Co., Fl., age 76, a laborer living in the household of James W. Herndon, age 45 and also a laborer. He was born in So. Carolina and probably was his second son. Concerning his service in the war of 1812, he filed papers in Putnam Co., Fl. on May 25, 1855: "William Herndon, age 70 of said County, declares he served as a Private in the Company of Capt. M. Singleton, in Col. Youngbloods Regiment, South Carolina Militia. He was drafted in Collerton Dist., So. Carolina, about August 11, 1813 and was discharged in Jacksonborough about August 30, 1813. Made application number 98483 for land under the Act of 1850, but a warrant was never received. William Herndon (his mark X)

The service records show that William Herndon was allowed 160 acres on July 14, 1856. William's name was shown in Capt. Moses Singletons Company, So. Carolina Militia."

It is thought that Philip's wife was the sister of Capt. Jesse Carter.

David settled in Irwin Co., Georgia where he farmed and raised cattle. Soon after he and his family moved to Irwin County, Georgia and settled in that portion of the county that was cut off in 1854 into Worth County, it was recorded that David Herndon

served as a Grand Juror in Irwin County in the September term of 1848 and at other times. The 1850 census for Irwin County, Georgia, shows living in the same household were David, age 37, born in South Carolina, a farmer; Eliza, age 38, born in Georgia; John, age 15; George, age 13; Louis M., age 12; Joshua, age 8; Rachel, age 5; David, age 3; and Rebecca Ann, age seven months. The census shows that all the children were born in Georgia. Information from Dudley Herndon

The following appeared in "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia", Vol. I, P. 127: After several years spent in Irwin County farming and stock-raising, David Herndon, in about 1855 sold his farm and moved to that part of Lowndes county, Georgia, that was in 1858, cut off and formed part of Echols County.

The 1860 census for Echols Co., Georgia, shows David Herndon, age 44, (actually 47) was living on vacant land and his personal property was valued at $580.00. Living in the household were his wife, Elisa, age 47; James, age 21; Joshua, age 18; Rachel, age 15: David, age 13; Rebecca Ann, age 10; William, age 8; and Howell, age 6. According to the census, all the younger members living in the household were born in Georgia and David and Eliza were born in South Carolina.

When the Sardis Baptist Church in Echols County was organized in April 1862, David and Eliza Herndon were among the early members.

David, age 51 years, a farmer, born in South Carolina appears in the list of men living in the 6th Senatorial District, 1058th Militia District, of Echols County, Georgia. This list identifies all free white males living in the district between 16 years of age and 60 years of age, except those in the Confederate Army or Navy or subject to conscription in the Confederate armed forces.

At the next Federal census, 1870, for the same county, 16th District; David Herndon, age 60 born in Georgia, a laborer on a farm, had living in the household: Rachel (probably an enumerator error), age 56; Rebecca, age 21; William, age 18; Howell, age 16; and John, age 32. Also living in the household was Nemo Now Herndon, age 6. According to the census all the household members were born in Georgia. The post office was Statenville.

John and Marcilla's families were early members of Sardis Baptist Church in Echols Co., Georgia when it was organized in April 1862.

He married Marcella Carter October 2, 1873 in Echols Co., Georgia (marriage number 310). Following is the wording on their marriage certificate:

"This certifies that Holy Matrimony was celebrated between John Herndon of Echols Co., and Marcella Carter of Echols Co., on the 2nd day of October, 1873 at G.C. Carter residence by Elder J.N. Reid, Minister of the Gospel."

Mr. Al Williams, great grandson of the Hon. John H. Herndon, said his great grandfather was Sheriff of Echols County, Georgia from 1864 to 1866.

The 1880 census for the 1211th District, Echols County, Georgia, shows John Herndon, age 46, had living in the household, his wife, Marcella, age 30; and children George M., age 5; and John, age 2. The census shows all members of the family were born in Georgia, and the parents of both John and Marcella Herndon were born in Georgia. Living on the next farm was Howell Herndon, a brother.

Mrs. Dot McLeod of the Echols County Historical Society wrote: "In going through some deeds at the Courthouse, I learned that Hon. John Herndon was the Ordinary in Echols County on deeds dated: December 8, 1882, July 13, 1888. On August 12, 1869, he witnessed a deed and on December 10, 1885, a deed was witnessed by Marcella Herndon and John Herndon, Ordinary."

Miss Ruth Blair, State Historian, Atlanta, Georgia, provided a list of Echols County Commissioners prior to 1897 which appears on page 473 of the book, "Chinkypin" published for the Echols County Historical Society. Following is a portion of that list: "The first Board of County Commissioners of Echols County was provided by a local act enacted in 1873 and consisted of five commissioners for a term of four years each, and this was changed in 1880 to provide for two year terms. Commissioned March 1, 1873: Isham T. Carter, William T. Green, Frank H. Hall, D.M. Jackson, and James T. Padgett. Note: Wm. T. Green resigned October 30, 1874 and was succeeded on February 19, 1875, by Daniel A Johnson. Padgett having been elected to legislature, resigned and was succeeded August 17, 1875 by JOHN H. HERNDON. D.M. Jackson having removed from the county, was succeeded January 18, 1875 by William Allen.

Cause of Death: The following appeared in The Valdosta Times (Lowndes Co., Georgia), dated Saturday, September 27, 1890."Hon. John Herndon of Echols County, died suddenly of heart disease at his home near Statenville, on Monday night last.

He was enjoying apparently excellent health... Mr. Herndon was Ordinary of Echols County, the Democratic nominee for Senator of the Sixth District and one of the foremost citizens of his county." He died at age 55 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Echols County, Georgia.

Notes for Marcella Carter:Marcella was born in Lowndes County, Georgia in 1852. Some time after John died in September of 1890, she married James Robert Williams. James and his first wife, Caroline Prescott Williams were parents of, among others, John B. Williams. John married Delia Herndon, daughter of John H. and Marcella Herndon. James and Marcella had one child, Carrie Williams. John was born in 1839 and died in 1921 in Echols County, Georgia. Marcella died in 1939 and is buried in Rosemary Baptist Church Cemetery about 10 miles from Live Oak, Florida. The church is still active today (year 2000) and the earliest headstone is from 1845.

Terrell, born January 5, 1828 in Georgia and died January 22, 1911, also in Echols Co., Georgia. The 1860 census for Echols County, Georgia shows George C. Carter, age 30, a farmer, with real estate valued at $1000.00, and personal property at $820.00. Living in the household were his wife Lydia, age 33, and their five children.

The 1910 census for Echols Co., Ga. shows James R. Williams, age 73, a farmer who had been married three times, was living in Wrights Chapel, 1211 District, near Lake Park, Ga. Living in the household were his wife, "Masillia", age 51, the mother of seven children, of whom six were then living. Also living in the household was their daughter, Carrie, age 15 and a grandson, Freddie Herndon, age 8. The census shows "Masillia" had been married twice, James and "Masillia" Williams had been married for 17 years.

The 1930 census for Suwannee Co., Florida shows Marcella H. Williams, age 78, a widow was living in the household of her son, George Herndon, age 57, a widower.

There has been some controversy over the spelling of "Marcella" but her daughter, Delia, said the correct spelling was Marcella and that is what appears on the headstone.

Also living in the household were renters, the Jammie Calhoun family. No children for James and Lillie were shown.

He and Lillie are buried in Kinsey Cemetery near the intersection of Beulah Church Road and Culpepper Road in Echols Co., Georgia. There is a nice marker at the entrance of the cemetery that reads: "Kinsey Cemetery established ca. 1887 by James K. Kinsey".Information on dates of birth and death on James and Lillie was copied from their headstones by Al Williams. James was his great uncle, brother of his grandmother, Delia Herndon Williams.

The census also shows, living in the household of William Howell, were his wife Rachel, age 44, born in South Carolina; John, age 18; Minerva, age 16; Matthew, age 14; Mary, age 11; Lesse, age 6; and William C., age eight months. All the younger members of the household were born in Georgia.

George served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was a private in Company G, 51st Georgia Infantry (Harrison's Rangers), enlisted by Capt. John P. Crawford on March 4, 1863 in Echols County, Georgia. The service record shows he was 6' 1" tall, dark hair, blue eyes and had a dark complexion. His service record also shows he was a prisoner of war at Camp Delaware on July 7, 1863, transfered to Camp Point Lookout, Maryland on October 22, 1863, and was an exchange prisoner on February 18, 1865. He was recorded on a muster roll as an ex-prisoner of war at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia on February 21, 1865. In March 1865, George re-enlisted in the Confederate Army. In May 1865 he was again taken prisoner, this time in Tallahassee, Florida, and was pardoned soon after.

The 1870 census for Echols County, Georgia, shows George Herndon, age 33, a farmer, with real estate valued at $800.00 and personal property valued at $400.00. Living in the household were "Mahalie", age 33; Elinder, age 12; Liza, age 9; William, age 5; and Rachel, age 2. According to the census all the household members were born in Georgia.

The1880 census for District 12 of Ocean Pond, Lowndes County, Georgia, shows living in the household of George Herndon, age 43, were his wife M.E., age 44; and children Elander, age 20; William, age 14; daughter T.R., age 12; daughter M.A., age 9; George W., age 7; and Mathew, age 4. According to the census, all of the household members were born in Georgia.

It was probably this George W. Herndon who was a County Commissioner of Lowndes County, Georgia for the periods of January 1, 1891 - 1894 and again in 1897 -1898.

When the 1900 census for Lowndes County was enumerated, George W. Herndon, born March 1837, had living in the household, his wife Mahaley, born December 1835; Eleandor, born May 1858, according to the census, a step-daughter (believed to be an enumerator error); and children, Massey M., born February 1875; and Frank M., born October 1880. Also living in the

household was Callie Peterson, born January 1881, a granddaughter. The census shows that all persons living in the household were born in Georgia.

The Census also shows that Mary Herndon was the mother of three children, of whom one was then living; and David and Mary "M." Herndon had been married 31 years.

Notes for John H. Herndon:John and Mattie McCall Herndon's marriage was recorded in Hamilton Co., Florida Marriage Book B3, p. 163 by D.B. Johnson, County Judge. John was 26 years old when they were married and Mattie was 24. In 1999, Gail & Harold Pearson went to White Springs, Fl., and saw the church where her grandparents were married, it is still holding church services and behind the church is a cemetery where some of the McCall family is buried.

The 1910 Census for St. Lucie Co., Florida shows John H. Herndon, age 32, born in Georgia, was living in election precinct #8. Living in the household were his wife, Mattie S., age 29, born in Florida; their children: Lloyd R., age 6, born in Ga., "Carrol" (Carl), age 2, born in Florida, and Effie, age 1, born in Florida. (Note: Carl died March 29, 1917 of a ruptured appendix.)

The 1920 Census for St. Lucie Co., showed John H., age 42, a fisherman, was living in Quay, Precinct #5. Living in the household was his wife, Mattie, age 39, and their children: Lloyd, age 14, born in Ga., the rest born in Fl.; Effie, age 12, Hugh, age 9, Thelma, age 5 and Clifford, age 3.

The 1930 Census for Miami, Dade County, Fl. - Election Precinct #9, shows John H., age 52, an elevator operator (in the Postal Building), who rented a house for $15.00 a month. Living in the household was his wife Mattie, age 50 and their children: Lloyd, age 24; Hugh, age 17; Thelma, age 14, Clifford, age 13, and Harrell, age 7.

Cause of Death: At age 63, his stomach became enlarged with fluid and painful. Before he died it had to be "tapped" several times to give him relief. The doctor was due to come to his home and tap his stomach the day he passed away. Cause of death was attributed to Liver disease and Mycarditis. His daughter, Effie, said the liver disease wasn't caused by drinking because he didn't drink. He and Mattie were both buried in Winter Beach Cemetery, Winter Beach, Florida where many of the family is buried.

Notes for Hugh Lamar Herndon:Hugh and Adele were divorced before 1940 and he remarried. His second wife notified the family that he was missing. From that time (the early 1940's) until Tom and Michelle Pearson checked the Social Security Death Index in 1999 while researching the family, nothing was known about him. He had died in Sacramento, California in March of 1974, one year and 2 months after his mother died. She always wondered what had happened to him. According to his death certificate, he had lived in California for 17 years and in Sacramento for 3 years. Cause of Death: Pulmonary Emboli with fatty alteration of liver. Died at age 61 years and 10 months.

She lived in constant pain even with pain medication. She went into a severe depression and took her own life on December 23, 1972 in Miami, Florida at age 57 1/2. She is buried in Miami Memorial Cemetery.
