Inscription reads: "Pleasant Hodgen born Mar 12, 1827 died Sep 20, 1896 aged 69 y 5m 23d" According to the 1880 Clinton County census, both of his parent were born in Kentucky. Also at this time he was living next door to his brother Jacob. His obituary (The Frankfort Crescent, Friday, September 25, 1896, p. 1) reads: "Pleasant Hodgen Dead Sunday about noon at his home three miles south of the city, Pleasant Hodgen, a well known and highly respected farmer, died of dropsy after a short illness. Deceased had long resided in the county and was one of its most honored citizens. He leaves several children, his wife having died about five years ago. He was seventy years of age. The funeral was held at 11 o'clock Monday at the Antioch church and was conducted by Rev. Kerr, of Mechanicsburg. His obituary (The Frankfort Crescent, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1879, p. 1) reads: "Died On the 3rd day of September, 1879, at his father's house in Jackson township, Josiah Hodgin, aged 24 years, 9 months and 7 days. Josiah Hodgin, cut off in the morning of his manhood, was a young man of uncommon promise, of more than ordinary ability and moral worth. For more than six years he has been a consistent member of the Christian church. A year ago he was studying medicine, but recently he was clerking in B. F. Cohee's store. He was an Odd Fellow and Frankfort Lodge attended his funeral, at which at least 1000 people were present. The procession was nearly one mile long; religious services by Rev. His father, William HODGEN, was of Scotch-Irish descent and grew to manhood in Kentucky, where he was married a number of years ago to Mary Magdalene. William HODGEN was a farmer and followed that useful calling in Kentucky until his removal to Daviess county, Ind., of which he was one of the pioneers. In 1828, he became a resident of the county of Clinton and entered a tract of government land, from which he developed a farm and upon which he resided until his death in 1831. His wife survived him a number of years, departing this life in 1864. William and Mary HODGEN had a family of ten children, only two of whom are living at this time --- Pleasant, who was born March 12, 1827, and Jacob, whose name appears at the head of this sketch. The names of those deceased are as follows : James, John, Sarah, Harrison, Joseph, and Eliza; two also died that were unnamed. Jacob Hodgen spent his boyhood days assisting with the farm work, and his education, by no means elaborate, was obtained in the subscription schools of the township where he resided. He remained with his mother until after attaining his majority, and in 1853 went to California, making the trip to that far away country by water, the journey requiring twenty-seven days. While there he followed mining, a part of the time in the employ of other parties, and for two years operated a claim of his own with very successful results. After remaining in California for a period of three and one-half years, he returned to Clinton county and purchased a farm, which he made valuable by good improvements and upon which he resided until 1890, in which year he moved to Frankfort and purchased a grocery store and meat market. He continued in business for about eighteen months, disposing of his interest at the end of that time and retiring from the active duties of life. He sold his farm in 1893 to his son and is now enjoying that rest and quietude so nobly earned by a long life of activity. Mr. Hodgen, on the eighth of April, 1857, was united in marriage to Mary McKINZIE, daughter of Mercer and Sarah (ELMORE) McKINZIE, natives of Ohio and of Scotch lineage. The following are the names of the brothers and sisters of Mrs. Hodgen: Jacob, Mary, Catherine, Noah, Patrick, Hale, Juliana (deceased), Melvina, Job (deceased), Thomas and Emeline. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. HODGEN have been born six children, namely: Laban C., born June I, 1861; Henry H. October 3, 1862; Oscar, July 9, 1864, died February 19, 1865; Josie, wife of D. V. Lucas, born January 18, 1867; Anna F., born August 27, 1869, died February 14, 1892, and Magdalene, who was born July 27, 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Hodgen are faithful members of the old Christian church. Originally he was a republican and as such served one term as trustee of Jackson township. Of late years he has affiliated with the prohibition party, the principles of which he believes to be for the best interest to the country. According to the 1880 census, Mary Maish (adopted) was living in this household, aged 21, born in Indiana and both parents born in Indiana. At the time of the 1850 Clinton County, Indiana census, he was living in the household of his mother and two houses away from his future wife, Mary McKinsey. At the time of the 1860 Clinton County, Indiana census, Joseph McKinsey, age 15, born in Indiana, was living in this household. Haller Had Been Correspondent for The Times 29 Years Mrs. Rida Haller, age 72, wife of A.P. Haller, died at her home one-half mile north of Mechanicsburg at 1:30 o'clock yesterday morning. Mrs. haller was one of the best known women of the community and was a twin sister of Mrs. Rebecca McConnel, 353 West Wabash street, Frankfort. She had been ill from a complication of diseases. Mrs. haller was born in Clinton county September 7, 1856, the daughter of Pleasant and Jane Hodgen. She was married October 24, 1878, to Alonzo P. Haller. Always taking and active part in the affairs of the community, she was a faithful member of the Mechanicsburg Christian church, had taught Sunday school for fifty-two years and had been president of the Ladies Aid Society of the church for more than thirty years. She had served as Mechanicsburg correspondent for the Frankfort Times for twenty-nine years. Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cora Richey and Mrs. Edith Ferguson of Mechanicsburg; two grandsons, Lowell and Lloyd Ferguson; two sisters, Mrs. McConnell of Frankfort, and Mrs. Mollie Potts of Mechanicsburg, three brothers, James Hodgen of Lebanon, Frank Hodgen of Frankfort, and Charlie Hodgen of Kokomo, and several nieces and nephews. One son, Bruce, died a number of years ago when he was seven years of age.


Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Mechanicsburg Christian church. The Rev. John S. Hussey of Zionsville will officiate and burial will be made in Buntin cemetery." His obituary (The Frankfort Weekly Times, Saturday, March 14, 1903 p.1) reads: "Is Called By Death Isaiah Mundell Succumbs to An Attack of Pneumonia The Deceased was Born on the Farm Where he Died - Funeral Service Friday Morning Wednesday morning at 3:30 Isaiah Mundell died of pneumonia at his home four miles south of this city. He had been ill about three weeks. The deceased was one of Jackson township's best known farmers and was a useful citizen. He was born in this county, first seeing the light of day on the farm where death found him, the house in which he was born and the one in which he died standing within a quarter of a mile of each other. He was almost fifty-five years of age, his birthday being on May 28th. He was twice married, his first wife having died some years ago. He is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. Daisy Wainscott, Guy B., and O. V. Mundell. HODGEN FOUND DEAD AT HOME Hemorrhage Believed Responsible for Death of Promin- ent Retired Farmer at Main Avenue Residence This Afternoon - Body Found by Mrs. Hodgen Albert H. (Ab) Hodgen, 66, prominent retired former, widely known over the county, was found dead in the bath tub at his residence, 352 Main avenus, shortly before 2 o'clock this afternoon. Death is believed to have resulted from a hemorrhage and it is thought he had been dead on hour when the body was found by Mrs. Hodgen. Mr. Hodgen had been in impaired health for some time and it had been his custom to rest a short time during the morning and each afternoon. He went upstairs shortly before ten o'clock, this being the last time he was seen alive. At two o'clock Mrs. Hodgen, who had been busy downstairs, never realizing the passing of time, went upstairs to awaken him. When she found the bedroom empty she stepped into the bath room and was horrified to find the lifeless body of her husband hanging over the side of the bath tub. Mrs. Hodgen ran screaming to the home of Mrs. Willliam Doty, a neighbor residing on the north, and Mrs. Doty hurried to the Hodgen home. Mrs. Doty states she believes that Mr. Hodgen had been dead for an hour when she first saw the body. Dr. Boulden was summoned and worked frantically to revive life, but was unsuccessful. The coroner was called to conduct and inquest in the death. Mr. Hodgen, who for many years resided south of Antioch on the Jackson highway, was widely known over the county. About six years ago he sold his farm and moved to Frankfort. James Hodgen, 72, a native of Jackson township and a former business man of Frankfort, died yesterday morning at his residence in Lebanon, following a three weeks' illness with pneumonia, according to word received by relatives in this city. He had resided in Lebanon more than thirty years, moving from Frankfort where he had at one time engaged in the retail grocery business on West Armstrong street and prior to that had operated a livery stable on West Washington street. He was born in the southern part of Clinton county in August 1860, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Pleasant Hodgen. As a young man he was united in marriage to Miss Mary March. The couple established their home here and made this city their place of residence until they moved to Boone county, where Mr. Hodgen had been employed in a poultry house for many years. The survivors are the wife and a son and a daughter, Virgil Hodgen, Elkhart, and Mrs. Fritz Richmond near Lebanon. Mrs. Rebecca McConnell, Frankfort, and Mrs. John Potts, near the Clinton county line, are sisters. Frank Hodgen, Jackson township, and C.E. Hodgen, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, are brothers. Mrs. Potts was a member of the Antioch Congregational Church. Atkinson, Area Pioneer, Dies at Age 91


N.B. "Bony" Atkinson, who came to this area via steamer and the old Baler railroad in 1879, died Tuesday at the home of a daughter at Waitsburg. He was 91 years old at the time of his death and had been well known in Walla Walla county as a dairyman, wheat raiser, legislator and county commissioner. Born January 15, 1859, in St. Joseph, MO, he was educated in Jackson, CA, where his family had migrated. In 1879 he left San Francisco by boat for Portland and Wallula and settled near Helix, OR, where he farmed on a homestead for several years. He married Margaret Hodgen, the daughter of a Umapine pioneer family and moved to the state line area where he entered the dairy business, continuing that until 1899. Just before the turn of the century, the Atkinsons moved to Waitsburg and took up the dairy business again. A few years later, "Bony" - for his given name, Napoleon Bonaparte - took up wheat raising which he continued until his retirement in 1920. He was one of the main organizers of the Waitsburg Farmers Union, holding the office of state president in that organization for several years. Atkinson also served on the Waitsburg school board several years in the state house of representatives for two terms and six years as a county commissioner. A charter member of Nasburg lodge No. 91, F. and A.M. at Helix, he also was a member of Waitsburg lodge No. 16, having been master of the Helix lodge once and three times master of the Waitsburg lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, and a son and since his wife's passing in 1944, had made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Gene Ray, at Waitsburg. Surviving are sons, Van of Prosser, Pete and Lewis of Walla Walla, Zo of San Jose, CA, and Jack of Bakersfield; daughters, Mrs. Verna Hampton of Navarro, CA, and Mrs. Nellie Ray of Waitsburg; brothers Ike of Walla Walla and P.L. Atkinson of Los Angeles. Born Sept. 13, 1910 in Waitsburg, he had been a resident of the Waitsburg and Walla Walla Area most of his life. For eight years, Atkinson was employed by the Standard Oil Company in Saudi Arabia. Following that, he was employed by the U.S. Government as a construction worker in Madrid, Spain. Here he met and married Antonia M. Medina in 1956. Since his return to Walla Walla, he was employed for eight years prior to his illness as custodial officer for the Washinton State Penitentiary. Atkinson was a veteran on WWII, having served with the Seabees of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the American Legion. Besides his widow he is survived by two daughter, Marisa and Wendy Lynn and two sons, Jack Jr. and James Michael, all at the home, two sisters, Mrs. Verna Hampton of San Francisco, CA and Mrs. Nellie Ray of Waitsburg, and one brother, Pete M. Hodgen Area Pioneer Dies in Kent John Edward "Ed " Hodgen, born in a log house in the Fruitvale district, October 14, 1869, died Sunday at the home of a daughter at Kent, Wash. He had been ill since January. The first son born in the West to John and Rachel Hodgen. Who crossed the plains from Missouri four years earlier. He had lived all his life in the Walla Walla Valley except for a short time spent at Spokane as a boy and the past few months at Kent. His education came from valley schools ending at the Old Weston Normal School. He had been a farmer until his retirement. In 1897 he was married to Sara Ellen Crabill. Eight children were born to them. Mrs Hodgen died in 1838. Hodgen was a popular figure at the Hodgen family reunions and he stated at the last one held January 1, 1951, that he had attended all of the 35 get-togethers that had been observed. He had been president of the group for a number of years. Surviving are sons, Dallas of Adams, Fay of Pendleton and Elmer of Port Orchard; daughters Fern Leidl of Boise, Priscilla Lewis of Kent and Aura Lee Larson of Kirkland; brothers Grover of Pasco and George of Fruitvale and a sister, Margaret Conrad of Walla Walla. Lewis Hodgen, 91, died Dec. 23, 2005, at her Willow Creek here. The memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 615 Kendall St. in Port Orchard. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, 2120 S. Second Ave., Walla Walla. Mrs. Hodgen was born June 11, 1914, in Milton. She graduated in 1932 from McLoughlin Union High School. She married Elmer A. Hodgen in 1934 in Walla Walla. They moved to Port Orchard in 1942, and she worked 27 years for the Bremerton Sun newspaper. She loved homemaking and gardening. She sold flowers, Edna's Dahlias, at the Port Orchard Farmers Market. In 1993 she was the fourth person to receive an honorary membership in the Farmers Market. She was a member of Pythian Sisters Lodge 17 in Port Orchard and held one of the state temple's highest positions of manager. Sher was a founding member of the Annapolis Homemakers and was a member of the Port Orchard Homemakers. Survivors include two sons, Dwight Hodgen of Oakley, Calif.., and Brian Hodgen of Belfair, Wash; and two grandsons, Matthew and Peter Hodgen. Mrs. Dominiak was born Feb. 23, 1912, in Fruitvale, near Milton-Freewater, to Edgar and Sarah Crable Hodgen. She grew up on the family farm there and graduated in 1930 from McLoughtlin Union High School. She and her husband Albert J. Lewis lived at her family's home place in Milton-Freewater. They moved to Seattle in 1936 and 10 years later to a 70-acre farm in Kent, WA, where they raised horses. She was an executive secretary for agents with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigation for 20 years. The Lewises divorced in 1955. She and Leo Dominiak married in 1959, and they traveled three to four times to Europe. She was a federal civil service employee at Fort Lewis( WA) Logistical Center Upon retirement in 1980, she received a Meritorious Civilian Service to the Department of the Air Force Medal. Mr. Dominiak died in 1997. She got a computer at 90 to e-mail family and friends and was working on her family history. She supported Unity Church of Tacoma and was a fanatical fan of the University of Washington Huskies and Seattle Mariners. Survivors include daughter Nancy Lewis Rawley of Kent, WA; son Kenneth Lewis of Huntington Beach, CA; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by infant son, Kevin Lewis; and six siblings. Hodgen Of M-F Is Dead George E Hodgen, 81 of Milton-Freewater, a resident of the Fruitvale area for most of his life, died Thursday afternoon in a Pendleton hospital following a lingering illness. Hodgen was born in Milton-Freewater on May 3, 1872. He attended the old Oregon Normal School in Weston and later lived a short while in Spokane. He farmed in the Fruitvale area for 50 years after that. One of the organizers of the Blue Mountain Prune Growers' Association, Hodgen was secretary of the Hodgen reunion for a number of years. During World War I, he received national recognition as an outstanding salesman of bonds. Survivors include two daughters. Mrs James (Mildred) Riley of Walla Walla and Mrs. E. S. (Leta) Ellison of Portland; three sons, Blaine Hodgen of Pateros, Wash., Roland Hodgen of Grandview and Darrel Hodgen of Milton-Freewater; one brother and one sister, Grover C Hodgen of Pasco and Mrs C.H. Conrad of Walla Walla; eight grandchildren and five-great-grandchildren. Hodgen's wife died in 1910. He was a member of the Blue Mountain Prune Growers' Association and the Farm Bureau. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in a local chapel with interment in Mountain View Cemetery. **************************

C. Weathermon Stephen Casswell Weathermon, 89, of 728 S. Wilbur, died Sunday after a short illness in a local hospital. Weathermon was born March 28, 1880 in Nodaway County, Mo. and came to Walla Walla at the age of nine. He grew up on the family farm near Umapine and farmed there until he retired seven years ago. Weathermon married Josephine Hodgen Nov. 13, 1904 in Walla Walla. Surviving Weathmon are his wife, at the home; a daughter Mrs. George L. (Bernadine) Converse of Walla Walla; two sisters, Mrs. Roxy Merrick of California and Mrs. Catherine Hoon of Umapine; and two brothers, Charles and Oscar Weathermon, both of Walla Walla. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Marshall-Herring Chapel with the Rev. Howard Baker of the First Church of God officiating. Concluding services and vault interment will follow at Mt.
