1. JOHN1 SHACKELFORD1 was born Circa 1785 in Virginia2, and died 1864 in Hazel Hill, Johnson, Missouri3. He married NANCY KEEN4,5 December 08, 1815 in Caswell, North Carolina6,7,8, daughter of JOHN KEEN and NANCY HORNBUCKLE. She was born 1793 in Caswell, North Carolina9,10, and died March 09, 1861 in Hazel Hill, Johnson, Missouri10. There is conflicting evidence of John Shackelford’s birth date, ranging from 1785 to 1789, but by all accounts, he was born in Virginia. One John Shackelford is listed as a member of the "Eleventh Company, detached from Caswell Regiment" in the War of 1812, which may be this John Shackelford, since he married Nancy Keen in North Carolina. Nancy Keen is mentioned in the will of her father, John Keen, and Caswell County North Carolina Will Books 1814 - 1843 contains an entry from Will Book I, 1821 as follows:

Allotment of negroes of estate of John keen decd to: Nancy Shackleford, Ellender Keen, John H. Humphreus, James Keen, David Keen.

John and Nancy married on December 08, 1815 in Caswell County, North Carolina, and apparently moved immediately to Kentucky where their daughter, Sarah, was born in 1816. I believe that they first moved to Madison County, which is inscribed as the place of birth on the tombstone of their son, James, born in 1824, and where John Shackleford, aged 26 to 45 years, is listed in the 1820 census with a family of three females. By the time of the 1830 census, the Shackelfords had moved on to Logan County, Kentucky, and the family included 8 children: four girls and four boys. Also in Logan county in 1830 was a Tarlton Shackelford and Sarah (Hornbuckle) Simpson, one of Nancy (Keen) Shackelford's aunts. Census records list Sarah and her sons, Levi and John, as heads of households. By the mid-1830’s, both John Shackelford and Tarlton Shackelford had moved from Kentucky to Missouri, as had Sarah Simpson and her family. Tarlton moved to Cooper County, Missouri, while the others moved to Johnson County. George Tarlton Shackelford was a descendant of Roger Shackelford (b. 1744 VA), and I have entertained the thought that Tarleton and John may have been related, but have no proof. Quoting from The History of Johnson County, Missouri, Kansas City, Mo., published by Kansas City Historical Company, 1881: "We get the following contribution of important facts from Judge Wm. McMahan: 'The early settlers of Hazel Hill Township are: ... John

Shackelford came here in 1835 from Kentucky -- deceased; Leroy Barton came here from Kentucky in 1834. ...' " Based on the children's ages and birth places given in census records, the Shackelfords actually entered Missouri by October of 1833 when son Andrew Jackson Shackelford was born, although they may not have gone directly to Johnson County. Two of Nancy Keen’s aunts emigrated to Johnson County, Missouri: Milly Ann Hornbuckle who married Thomas Bolen Windsor and died on November 25, 1843 in Johnson County, Missouri, and Sarah Hornbuckle (mentioned above) who married James A. Simpson and was buried in July, 1861 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Johnson County, Missouri. John and Nancy, along with many of their Shackelford descendants, are buried in the Liberty Cemetery on Highway 13 just north of Warrensburg in Johnson County, Missouri. According to research notes of long-time Shackelford researcher and original author of the Shackelford Clan Magazine (1945-1957), Johnson County, Missouri deed book 3, page 525 records

Jones, the original author of the Shackelford Clan Magazine (1945-1957), does not list Susan among the children of John and Nancy Shackelford, probably because a deed recorded for the sale of John Shackelford's property in 1866 by his heirs lists most of his other children, but not Susan. But her marriage in Johnson

County, Missouri in 1840, and earlier census records of the John Shackelford family indicate that she was their daughter. I believe that she was not listed as an heir on the deed because the John Young family moved from Missouri to Mendocino County, California, between 1850 and 1856 and lived there until their deaths. Also not listed on the above mentioned deed are Andrew Jackson Shackelford (who was alive, but probably living in Greene County, Illinois) and Mary A. Shackelford (who was probably alive, although I have not found a record of her marriage, so do not know what her name may have been).

From the Willits [California] News, Sat. 12 Feb 1910 Mrs. Susan Young Mrs. Susan Young, better known as "Grandma Young", died at her home in Willits, Thursday, aged 90 years and 9 months. She was the oldest person in Willits and has lived in this vicinity 50 years. She has been in failing health for a number of years and an invalid for the past five years. All of her near relatives are dead with the exception of her son, Robert, who resides here. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

From the Little Lake Herald 4 Mar 1903 Mrs. Jane Flanagan, aged 42 years, died at her home in this city Monday morning. She was the wife of Thomas Flanagan, the well known blacksmith of this city, was born in California, and came in early childhood to Little Lake valley. She was buried in the local cemetery yesterday and the funeral was attended by many sorrowing friends. The deceased was a generous and charitable woman; her many acts of kindness will long be remembered by grateful recipients. Besides her husband, she leaves a mother, Mrs. Young, a sister, Miss Nellie Young, and a brother, Robert Young, all of this city.

George W. REDFORD SR. A writer in the Holden Enterprise has the following on the life of one of Johnson county's late and most esteemed citizens. Mr. George W. Redford Sr. was born in Stokes county, N. C. March 20, 1817. He came with his parents to Missouri in 1825, to Johnson Countty in 1846 or '47 and with his older brothers, Noah and John, was identified with the improvements of the county. The three brothers improved quite a number of good farms. He was married near Warrensburg to Miss Deborah SHACKELFORD, April 20, 1848. To this union eleven children were born. One girl died in infancy, and a young man, Lewis, died in the town of Holden some years ago. The remaining children; six girls and three boys, are well known in Holden. Mrs. Meigs is a missionary in China and one daughter, Mrs. Fiske resides in Spokane, Washington. All ... with several grandchildren were present at the funeral. He died Jan., 5, 1904 lacking but a few days of eighty-seven years. Mr. Redford was highly esteemed as a citizen. His word and honesty were unimpeachable. He was a good father, dearly loved by his children, who showed their devotion by the tender loving care they gave him in his long and painful sickness. Until this last sickness came upon him he was one of the strongest best preserved old men in the county. Mr. Redford married an excellent Christian woman, a member of the C. P. Church, and he always respected religion and the church. He was not a member of the church, but in his last days claimed to have a Christian hope. His wife died about three years ago. Her death was a sad bereavment to him and he was not reluctant to go to meet her. The funeral was conducted Thursday at the residence by Revs. Revile and Russel in the presence of a great number of friends and relatives from all parts of the county.

Union) We are grieved to announce the death of Uncle Jim Shackelford, Friday October 28, 1892 at 6:40 a. m., Uncle Jim passed over the river of death and into the silent land. The funeral services were rendered at Mt. Moriah church Saturday at 11 a. m. Rev. G. W. Mathis, assisted by Rev. R. R. Coffee, preached the funeral. A large crowd of friends and relatives and the entire community were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased. At the close of the services the remains were interred at the Liberty cemetery. The community deserves praise for their generosity and respect to Mr. Shackelford during his protracted illness. Mr. Shackelford had resided in this section for forty years and was one of our best citizens. He was a man who loved and cherished his family, and was never known to intentionally wrong one of his neighbors, but to the contrary was esteemed highly and liked by every body. Uncle Jimmie will be missed in our midst, but we realize it was God who called him hence, therefore we are compelled to mark him off our list. We sing, read and know of our loved and faithful ones gone, To be with God and enjoy that Heavenly throng, And we know that many mansions are in Heaven prepared For the good and the faithful, who we on earth have spared. The sympathy of this community go with the sorrowing family in their great bereavement. Respectfully, A FRIEND.

From the Bluffdale News February 7, 1900 Andrew Jackson Shackelford died February 7, 1900, age 66 years. He leaves a wife and six childredn. Mr. Shackelford, although very peculiar and eccentric, was a man of great influence in his neighborhood. We shall miss him in the church and Sunday School, where his enthusiastic work was made all the more forcibly by his eccentricity. He was unusually warm hearted and sympathetic and deeply religious. His funeral was preached at the Haypress School House, and burial in the Walkerville Cemetery. From the White Hall Register February 16, 1900 Andrew Jackson Shackelford of Walkerville died on Thursday, February 8, 1900, and was buried at the Walkerville Cemetery Friday, February 9, 1900, at the age of 66. His first wife, who preceded him in death, was the former Ellen Newman. One of their two children, Freddie, died in infancy. The other, Benjamin Franklin survives. Shackelford later married the former Mattie Early. Eight children were born to this union, five of whom survive, William Ashury, Mary Medorah, Myrtle Ethel, Annie Caroline and Loren Eugene. Also living are one brother and two sisters.

Twelve years later, the tone of local newpaper articles was decidedly more upbeat as the John Barton Shackelford family prepared to move west.

Mr. Shackelford sold his farm some time ago to Mr. John Adams, who will move there next year. ________________________________ From the Journal Democrat. Warrensburg, Mo., Friday, December 4, 1903. F a y e t t e v i l l e. J. B. Shackelford and family left the first of last week for California. We wish him success in the far west. ________________________________

And so, in November of 1903, John and Mary and five children moved to the town of Clovis in Fresno County, California. Mary’s parents, Robert and Florilla Matthews, had already relocated from Missouri to Clovis in April of the same year. I had always wondered how people from the middle of Missouri would decide to move to the central valley of California. But I found while scouring the Warrensburg newspapers for information about the Shackelfords, Matthews, Bartons, etc. that the railroads at that time were advertising in the local newspapers. Their ads encouraged people to travel to the beautiful central San Joaquin Valley of California. John had been a farmer in Missouri, but it appears that when he moved to California, he decided to give up the country life. Subsequent census records list his occupation as laborer. He became active in community life, being a member of the first Board of Trustees for the city of Clovis and involved in the establishment of the Clovis Cemetery. During the hot summer months in the San Joaquin Valley, the family often moved to the Shaver Lake area, where several of the men in the family worked in the logging business. During one of those summers, on August 7, 1910, Mary died of tuberculosis. The family had to bring the body of their wife and mother down from Shaver Lake in a horse-drawn wagon to Clovis for burial. Mary was only 36 years of age and left behind six young

children. John lived another 22 years after Mary’s death. He raised his children and evenutally remarried to Esther Virginia Gwinn, widow of George V. Kious. In 1932, John died.

From the Fresno Bee-Republican. Fresno, California, Thursday, April 28, 1932. SHACKELFORD RITES SET Funeral services for John Barton Shackelford, 64, father of Mrs. J. P. Ruffman [sic], Mrs. J. M. Sheridan and L. B. Shackelford of Fresno, will be held at 10 A. M. Saturday at the chapel of the Sullivan Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Clovis Cemetery. He died yesterday in Stockton. He also is survived by his wife, Mrs. Esther Shackelford and a son, C. O. Shackelford of Visalia, and two daughers, Mrs. R. C. Wells of Visalia and Mrs. W. M. Weir of Glendale.

John and Mary are buried in the John Shackelford family plot, Clovis Cemetery, Clovis, Fresno, California. John was instrumental in the establishment of this cemetery and purchased a large plot in which several family members are buried. I believe that after the death of John Shackelford, Esther married a man of East Indian descent. Esther's death certificate and burial records are in the name of Esther V. Kious. We haven't yet learned where they had the nuptial knot tied, but the boys and a number of young ladies charivaried them Monday night. They were dressed in their wedding attire and both looked very happy. After congratulations the groom passed cigars around.

27 September, 1973--Standard Herald, Warrensburg, Mo.: Roy L. Whitsett, 91, prominent Holden, Missouri farmer and business man died at the Johnson County Memorial Hospital, Warrensburg, on Wednesday, September, 19, 1973. Besides being a farmer and stockman, Mr. Whitsett was president of the First National Bank in Holden until that institution merged with the Bank of Holden. He was a director of the latter bank for many years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a member of the Board of Directors of the Holden Cemetery Association. As a member of Holden Lodge #262 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, he recently received recognition for 65 years of service to the fraternity. He was a charter member of the board of directors of the Johnson County Memorial Hospital and served on the board as long as his health permitted. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ona (Groves) Whitsett in 1955, a daughter Ruth in 1917 and a son James Artemus in 1941. Surviving are one son, William Whitsett, Los Altos, California,one sister, Mrs. Margaret Atkins, Clinton; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September22 at the Ben Cast and Son Funeral Home, Holden with the Reverend Stephen Brown, pastor of the Holden Presbyterian Church, officiating. Music was organ selections by Mrs. Robert Alexander, organist. Burial was in the Holden Cemetery, Holden. California507,508. Florence Shackelford moved with her family from Johnson County Missouri to Clovis, Fresno County, California in November, 1903 when she was three years old. Florence graduated from Clovis High School and worked as a telephone operator before her marriage. James moved with his family from Fulton County Illinois to Laton, Fresno County, California in 1908 when he was twelve years old. According to the 1900 census of Fulton County, Illinois, James was born in May of 1896, not January, as his birth certificate indicates. The birth certificate is a “delayed” certificate that was issued years later, after all courthouse records were destroyed by fire. When he reached adulthood, James worked as a mechanic for the State of California Division of Highways, retiring in 1954. He was in the Army during World War I and he and Florence were subsequently active in the American Legion. Between 1944 and 1954, James and Florence lived at Route 9, Box 595, Fresno, California. The house was located on the east side of Brawley Avenue between Belmont and Whites Bridge. In 1954, they moved to Bass Lake, Madera County, California; and then in 1959 they moved to 80 acres just off of Triangle Road in Mariposa County, California. After Florence's death in 1963, James sold the Mariposa property and moved several times, finally living out his life in Fresno. He died in the Veterans Hospital in San Francisco. Mary Huffman was born on Backer Avenue in Fresno at the home of her parents, James and Florence (Shackelford) Huffman. According to family tradition, her middle name was chosen because her father, who wanted his second child to be a son, was determined to call the offspring "Jack". To her family and friends, Mary was always known as "Jackie". Mary graduated from Washington Union High School in Fresno, Fresno, California in 1942. Carl Powell was born on the family farm near Evansville, Monroe, Missouri, the seventh of twelve children. The highest level of school that Carl completed was Grade 8 at the Chandler School, after which he went to work to help support his large family. He was a private in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II, serving in the Pacific. He was on the island of Ie Shima where famed war correspondent, Ernie Pyle, was killed and where the Japanese and Americans met en route to the formal surrender of Japan. While in the army, Carl met and married Mary Huffman. After Carl was discharged from the Army in 1945, he moved his family to a farm in Monroe County, Missouri. They lived in Missouri for two years, and then moved to Fresno, California. In 1953, they moved to Bass Lake Annex, a small subdivision in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Madera County, California. From 1953 to 1970, Carl worked as an auto Mechanic for the U. S. Forest Service in North Fork, Madera, California. In September, 1970, Carl was on fire patrol in the forest when he received a report of an injured deer hunter who needed to be rescued from a canyon in the North Fork area. While on the rescue, Carl died of a heart attack. He is buried at the North Fork Cemetery, North Fork, Madera, California.
