Montrose is a hamlet in the Town of Cortlandt located in the NW corner of Westchester Co, NY. The Town of Cortlandt includes

the villages of Croton-on-Hudson & Buchanan, the CDPs of Crugers and Verplanck and the hamlets (communities) of Montrose

and Cortlandt Manor. It also includes Lake Peekskill and a section of Mohegan Lake. The rural character of the town is defined

by the Hudson River, numerous wooded hills and steep slopes, wetland areas and beautiful streams. If you live in Manhattan or

are planning a visit to New York City, you can easily take a train from Grand Central to Cortlandt. Go to Grand Central Station

and take the MTA Metro-North Railroad to the Cortlandt Manor Station located at 2 Memorial Drive Cortlandt Manor, NY, 10566-

1244. Cortlandt Manor station is 52.5 miles to Grand Central Terminal.

Hendrick Hudson discovered the Hudson River in 1609, sailing his ship the Half Moon north anchoring at Verplanck’s Point.

Cortlandt derived its name from the Van Cortlandt family who began purchasing land in 1677 from the Croton River north to

Anthony’s Nose and east to Connecticut. Cortlandt was the site of many skirmishes during the Revolutionary War. Local Roads,

such as Watch Hill and Furnace Dock Road, where the furnaces that made ammunition for the war effort were located, bear

names reflecting the Revolutionary time. During the 19th century the railroad was extended to the area and industrialization

began to occur with the hamlet of Verplanck becoming an important brick making center.

During the Revolutionary War, Lieutenant Colonel Cortlandt commanded the 2nd New York Regiment in the Continental Army.

He was awarded the rank of brigadier general for gallant conduct at the siege of Yorktown under General Lafayette.

the Revolution there was almost no inhabitants in the area that was to become Greene County, except along the Hudson River. It was not until after the war that the movement

westward began and pioneers came in to take up land back from the river and in the Catskills. In 1800 the towns of Coxsackie, New Baltimore, Athens, Cairo, Greenville and

Durham were taken from Albany County, and the towns of Catskill and Windham (and a portion of Woodstock) later to be divided into the towns of Catskill, Hunter, Lexington,

Jewett, Halcott, Windham, Ashland and Prattsville, were taken from Ulster County to form Greene County, names in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, of Revolutionary fame. The

sections along the west bank of the Hudson, where military units were organized during the war, were designated simply as the Coxsackie District and the Great Imboght (southern

Valley to Paltz River. Said property adjoined the land of Joseph Rich.

According to George D. A. Combes 1925 Manuscript, Solomon Combes (Comes) in 1748 petitioned the

Governor’s council for a permit to operate a ferry from Staten Island to New York City but the permit was

denied. Solomon’s will was proved Mar 19, 1753. Letters of Administration granted to Joseph Royall. Solomon was

the son of Richard Combes, Jamaica, Queens Co, NY. He was baptized Mar 14, 1714 in Grace Church, Jamaica,

seat. Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, midway between New York City and Albany, from 1782-83

Newburgh was headquarters of the Continental Army. (Later home of the Edison power plant and first city in America

Sarah Lee was the daughter of Joseph Lee and Abigail Price. She was born in NY in 1718 and her grandfather was Willam Lee of Leehall who came to NY in 1675. She married Solomon Coombes in 1738, he died before Oct. 31 1750. She married Benjamin Maple JR., their first child William was born about 1751. v. BENJAMIN GUIOU (GUION) [b. Jan 10, 1777 – d. 1831] (Married Lutheran Church of NY City?) Married Dutch Reformed Church;

Cartman on Mulberry St. with father and brother Nathanial through 1815. Cartman was like a Teamster, hauled

products between the docks and the merchants. In 1800 live NY City, Ward 7.

THIS IS THE BENJAMIN THAT SOME SOURCES SAY DESCENDED FROM DAVID GUION, SON OF

ISAAC GUION AND GRANDSON OF LOUIS GUION ECUYER OF NEW ROCHELLE.

Note: Benjamin Guion and wife Hannah purchased lots on NE corner of St. Nicholas & Mary Sts

(today Pump & Orange Sts) for $300 on Dec 24, 1802 and sold part of the lots in 1805 for $1,375

and the remaining lots for $3,000 in 1814. Then, he and his mother-in-law, a widow, sold lots from

estate of John Bonte` for another $3,000. They moved to Cincinnati, OH in 1814. In 1815, they

acquired a farm in Dearborn Co, IN. ($6,000 in 1800 = $105,600 in 2012) Lived Lawrenceburg, IN in 1820;

Agriculture, Owns 8 Slaves; 1830 Census lives in Cincinnati, OH with oldest son David & wife Caroline along with

sons John & Benjamin and dau Sarah (Peter not counted, not yet 10 yrs old);

Benjamin reportedly died in New Orleans. This seems curious as he would have died the same

year (1831) and perhaps it is just a coincidence that his grandson William Rogers Guion later moved to New Orleans

where he shared a residence with most of his unmarried grown children. The mystery of what happened to Benjamin

and where he is buried is yet to be solved.

m. Oct 13, 1799 Johannah “Hannah” Bonte` (Bonta or Banta) [b. Sept 6, 1781 – d. Dec 10, 1820] Born Essex Co, NJ;

Hannah is buried with an infant dau in East Fork Chapel graveyard, Gilford, IN.

Dau of Johannes & Jane Van Zile Bonte`, Bergen twp, NJ, about 5 miles from Staten Island. (Johannes died in 1812

Jane died in 1839.) Hannah is descendant of Epke Jacobse Bonte, immigrated to New Amsterdam

Feb 12, 1659 on the ship “De Trouw” (The Faith);

Epke Jacobse's father, Jacob Epkese, married a landed wife, Reytske Sickedr, who acquired land at her families plantation at Bonte. After

marrying Reytske, Jacob Epkese signed his name Jacob Epkese te Bonte (Jacob Epkese at Bonte). The name was misspelled when his sons took it

for a surname in the new world. Some Bantas in Kentucky still pronounce the name as Bonte though they spell it Banta. In Dutch the word means

"Spotted." They very likely had a dairy farm at Bonte with the traditional Friesian "spotted cows (In Dutch, "Bonte Koe").

Explanation by Theodore M Banta, author of “Conquest of a Continent: Nine Generations of the American Frontier.”

(Note Hannah Bonte’s sister Catharine married David C. Perrine. Her brother David Bonte married Margaret Myers, dau of Cornel ius Myers.

After David’s death, Margaret and her two sons John Bonte, b. 1808 and Cornelius Bonte, b.1809 moved to City Island, Westchester Co, NY)

Interesting History: Perrine’s Bridge derives its name from James Perrine, a French Huguenot immigrant who built a tavern near the site of the bridge in 1820. The old covered bridge was built in 1844 by James Wood and spans the Walkill River between the Town of Esopus and the Town of Rosendale. It was built for the Kingston to New Paltz Road. James Perrine's son was hired each winter as the "snower." He would spread snow the 138 feet length of the structure so horse-drawn sleighs could cross. The Burr Arch Truss design of the bridge is the only one left in New York State and is listed on the National Historic Register.

- DAVID BONTE GUION [b. Mar 4, 1801 – d. Nov 4, 1868] Born New York, Baptized May 17, 1801 in NY Methodist Church;

Struck down by the sword of Col. Smith of the Patriot Army; Young Gilbert was ordered to shoe the horse of Col. Smith at the family

blacksmith shop. It was Sunday and Gilbert refused. The officer drew his sword and struck Gilbert to the ground. This barbarous act

forever changed the allegiance of the Vincent family. Elijah Vincent took a commission with the British army. The Vincent homestead

was later called “Halsey House” and was used as the Capitol of the U.S. for six months during 1797 when Philadelphia ran rampant

with yellow fever. During this time President John Adams resided there. [According to the Nov-1914 Journal of American Ancestry]

"In many cases- the Head Stones- simple fieldstone, uninscribed, marked the first early graves, row on row in the old Huguenot

graveyard in New Rochelle, one of the oldest in the country. While undated, most of them went back to the late 1600's.

In a plot '60 paces east' reserved under an ancient grant from old Bonnegrand, an iron picket fence with a massive iron gate

inscribed ‘The Descendants of Louis Guion, a native of France' enclosed the plot reserved for his descendants. This cemetery
