Generation 1

1. JEAN1 GAURY was born about 1645 in Soubise Province of Saintonge, Charente-Maritime, France.He died between Mar-Jun 1709 in Manakin, Henrico County, VA. He married Mary Rue about 1675in Soubise, Saintonge, France. She was born about 1660 in France. She died before 1716 in prob.Manakin Virginia Colony.

Notes for Jean Gaury:Jean Guerry was born in the village of Soubise, in the ancient Province of Saintonge, in Frnaceabout 1645. He left France before 1685, and came to the Colony of Viginia in 1699/1700accompanied by two sons, Pierre and Claudius. Jean Guerry and his sons were millers of grain, atrade that continued in the family for more than a hundred years.

In the first hundred years the name was spelled many different ways, but by the late 1700's it hadbecome Goree, though some of the decendants now spell the name Goray and Gore.

The descendants of Jean Guerry and his sons, Pierre and Claudius, migrated from Virginia toSouth Carolina, then to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Illinois during the1800's.

All of the Gorees in the United States are descended from the Jean Guerry, or from pre Civil WarSlaves of White Goree families in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas.

Source: Internet, Gene Ballentine Rooks <[email protected]>"Jean Gaury, sa femme, et un enfant" is on the list of French Huguenot refugees on board the ship[IT:Mary Ann:IT] that landed at Jamestown July 31, 1700. The refugees, part of a shipment of fourboatloads, actually settled several miles up the James River, a little less swampy area, that theynamed Manacan after the Indians recently displaced there. Huguenots, or French Protestants, hadbeen starved and slaughtered out of France, escaped to England, and then resettled whereverthey could find passage. Earlier groups had gone to New Amsterdam, Massachusetts, SouthCarolina, and finally Virginia and Delaware. Proof of descent from this ancestor will makedescendants on this line eligible for membership of The Huguenot Society. On the same ship washis son Pierre, wife and young baby. His other son, [BO:Claudius:BO], was a teenager. His will,probated March 20, 1709 in Henrico Co. refers to him as a French refugee of Manakin. In it heleaves 80 acres to wife Mary Rue during her life time, eldest son Peter (Pierre) to receive only oneshilling, younger son Claude Gory to have the land on death of his wife. Just as a side note, such aminor bequest doesn't mean a child was cut off, but usually means that child had already receiveda suitable distribution of assets. It is seen frequently in wills of that time.

Notes for Pierre Gaury:Pierre is included in lists of tithables in the records of King William Parish throough 1715. Thepresumption is that he died circa 1715, however, there is no record found to date of his death, andit is certainly possible that he migrated to the Carolinas. Jan. 1880

Notes for Unknown Gaury:A child brought in the "Mary and Ann" on the voyage to Virginia apparently diedshortly after arrival in 1700.

Notes for Isaac Gaury:Entries made in 1737 and in 1738 church records indicate Isaac is an invalid;possibly ill and dying. Jan. 1880

Notes for Claudius Gory:Source Internet, Gene Ballentine Rooks <[email protected]>Claudius was under legal age when his family arrived in Mannikin.By 1714 when a record of inhabitants of Mannikintown was taken, ClaudeGarry and wife, whose name is believed to be Jeanne, were shown. In1716 he purchased 50 acres on the s. side of the James River, then inHenrico Co., in King William Parrish. Through the years following heis found on the tax lists, once is mentioned as objecting to a roadchange, once assigned to keep the road cleared, and once paid forcleaning the church In 1735 he sold the 50 acres and bought anadditional 192 acres. This area later fell into Goochland Co. Hedied not long after. The inventory of the estate of Claudius Gory in1737 is available from Goochland Co., I have not yet located atranscript. Box 146, Gotha, FL 34734:Having sold in 1743 the property inherited from his father inGoochland Co., Va., Daniel and his wife Elizabeth Britton soonrelocated to old Lunenburg Co., VA, which became Mecklenburg Co. in1765. He assisted appraising the inventory of John Pankey in 1750,who had witnessed the sale of his Goochland property in 1743. Hisbrother John is shown with him on the tithable list of 1752. Hereceived a patent for 550 acres of land on both sides of Allens Creekin 1755, which he sold the next year. His wife's name of Elizabethappears relinquishing her dower rights to this property. He boughtand sold property in that county several times until 1767, often withhis brother John appearing as a witness.He is next found in Mecklenburg, VA , and then is found inNewberry, SC on a 1779 jury list, on a land deed when he purchased a300 acre plantation on Kelley's creek, and on the 1790 census., withtwo males over 16 and six females. A review of the will book ofNewberry Co. SC in the late 1700's shows his name often as witness orattending estate sales, in close proximity with the name of LewisHogg, who his daughter later married, Owen names, and the first namesof Claudius, Clarissa, and Britton, repeated in related Goreefamilies. One of the estate sales was that of his brother John, whojoined in the removal to Newberry Co. Daniel and Elizabeth had thefollowing children, Agnes Kelly, who was previously married to ThomasDurrett, grandson of Francis Durrett, another Huguenot emigrant,

DANIEL LAST APPEARS IN THE RECORDS OF LUNENBURG COUNTY IN 1767.In 1767 Daniel Gory and wife, Elizabeth, sell land to John Freeman.

IN 1777, AND IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY DEED BOOK 15, PAGE 10, APPEARS THEFOLLOWING ENTRY:"Robert Mumford to Joshua Moss. ... for consideration of 200 pounds. ..360 acres ...together withthe grist mill purchased by Robert Mumford of Daniel Gorre ."Apparently the trade of miller continues to be followed by the descendants of Jean Guerry, themiller. Grist mills were owned and operated by Gorees in South Carolina, and in Alabama until themid 18001s.

On market the 1st of January 1829, Constable Silas Goree served a writ for debt on Mr.Colman Williams on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse. Mr. Williams pulled his knifeand stabbed Silas Goree to death. The subsequent hanging of Colman Williams on the publicgallows for his crime of murder was the first judicial hanging of a white person in MontgomeryCounty. LJG files.

Email From Paul Goree (08-13-2001):OK, so Noah's father was George Castle GOREE and you've probably seen on theinternet where his father is reported to be George also. That came fromGeorge's death certificate and is inaccurate. I don't know when Noah cameback to TX, but both George and Noah were killed in a "gasoline explosion"according to their 1936 death certificates. I did some internet querying andcorresponded with a former GOREE daughter-in-law (still trying to get someclosure on that marriage to a GOREE). The story (I wasn't there, I don'tknow, I'm only repeating) is a grand jury was convened but apparently did notindict. Noah's half brother, George Washington GOREE, was suspected ofbashing a head or two with a shovel and torching the building. Hidden moneywas reportedly involved (end of story).Noah's other half brother Charles Ewing GOREE died in 1934. He is listed in1933 Bexar co TX lunacy records. A number of first and second GOREE cousinsshow up in institutions (state hospital, mental) in the late 1880s and early1900s. I suspect some sort of genetic medical problem, such as seizures buthaven't ever heard from family members about it. Do you have info on theabove?
