1959 In Scotland, the first homes of the Irvines (Irwins) were in that part of Ayrshire called Cunningham, where they gave their name to the river Irvine. Irvine is one of the 66 Royal Burghs in Scotland and has been such, since the days of Bruce. When the Irvines shifted to Dumfrieshire, they were for several generations, hereditary mayors of the town of Dumfrie. This was long before the reign of King Robert of Bruce. Crine Erwine (or Irwin) was abthane of Dull and Seneschal and Collector of all the King's rent in the Western Isles. He married Beatrix, eldest daughter of Malcom II, and was the father of Duncan I, King of Scotland. Duncan, slain by Macbeth, was actually an Irvine, as was his son Malcom III, who in turn overthrew Macbeth and restored the Irvines to the throne of Scotland. His descendants to Alexander III, predecessor of Robert Bruce were therefore Irvines. The period of these Kings is from 1034 to 1285. All the subsequent Kings of Scotland and England after the union of Scotland and England are therefore descendants of Crine Irvine, father of Duncan I. In Scotland the Irwin Clan runs far back into antiquity. The name is found in various forms: Irwin, Irvine, Irving and Erwin being the most frequent. The most complete published account of this ancient Clan of Borderers is found in a richly illustrated volume, now out of print. "The Irvings, Irwins, Irvines, Erinveines, or any other spelling of the name: An Old Scots Border Clan" (Aberdeen, Rosemont Press, 1907) was written by its then Chieftain, Colonel John Beaufin Irving of Bonshaw, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. A feature of this book is a series of colored plates illustrating the minor variations of the Coat of Arms in different families of the Clan. But in all appear the three Holly leaves, green upon a field of silver, two and one, familiar to all true Irwins. --"The Descendants of Wm. Irwin of New York" by Hosmer --World Book Encyclopedia, Vol. D, p. 2136 Children of SAMUEL SNODDY and SARAH IRWIN are: 9. i. JANE4 SNODDY, b. Feb 08, 1823, Lycoming Co, PA; d. We clipped the following from the Williamsport (Pa.) Gazette and Bulletin, concerning Chas. SNODDY, one of the oldest citizens of Lycoming county, Pa., who died in the 84th year of his age, July 24th. He is the father of Col. W.W.S. SNODDY, of this city. The deceased is worthy of more than ordinary notice. In addition to his long and useful life, being at the time of his death (probably with one exception) the oldest man in the valley, he was a man who was universally respected by all who knew him, endowed with good, moral principles, a devoted Christian, having been for more than forty years a consistent member of the Baptist church. Being born of sturdy Scotch-Irish parents, the early pioneers of Lycoming County (then Northumberland), inured to hardships in his youth, he became a man of large and vigorous frame, and having inherited good sound sense from his father, and more than ordinary intelligence from his mother, he was early in life imbued with sound, fixed principles. Never an ardent partisan in politics, he was however an old time Whig and supported General Harrison for President in 1840. The writer, having been intimately acquainted with him for more than half a century, takes pleasure in saying that he never knew him to deviate from the path of rectitude and honor. He died as he lived, an honest, Christian man. He married many years ago to Miss SCHOOLEY, who died about ten years ago. They had nine children, seven of whom survive them. His eldest son William, who distinguished himself for gallant services in the late war, and was promoted to Colonel, is now practicing law at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, and Chas. T. is a resident of Williamstown, Pa. The balance of the family reside in this county. Marv’s Comments: The above obituary was taken I have the deceased name as James SNODDY. He is listed as James SNODDY on all the census records that I have found him on. I believe that whoever copied this obituary saw Jas. and put Chas. But of course his name could have been James Charles SNODDY or Charles James SNODDY. [Provided by Marvin D. Snoddy] Children of JAMES SNODDY and CHRISTINA SCHOOLEY are: 20. i. Was a miller, merchant, farmer, and proprietor to the village of Snoddy's Mill, the fourth son, born in Lycoming Co, PA. In 1849, he married Susan Koons, who was born in the same county on December 5, 1832. Her brothers were: Samuel, John, Aaron, and William. In the same year of their marriage (1849), these young people, yearning for opportunities and broader possibilities, looked to what then was the great undeveloped West, and with high hopes, took up their journey by alternate stretches of stage and car ride, they reached Buffalo, New York. Thence, by steamboat by on Lake Erie, they made their way to Toledo, Ohio. Then by Wabash and Erie Canal Packet Line, they came to Lafayette, Indiana; thence, the Davis Landing, which was about four miles above Montezuma, Indiana in Parke County, by steamboat on the Wabash River. Near Davis Landing, they stopped for a short time with his uncle, William Snoddy. This was their honeymoon. With only thirty-five cents left in his pocket and having learned the trade of miller, he soon found employment at Wright's Mill, situated on Sugar Creek at Rockport in Parke County, Indiana. Later, he rented Wilkin's Mill. In 1851, he and John Hardesty bought (from John Headly) a saw mill and corn grinder, located 20 miles north, at the place later known as Snoddy's Mill, or Coal Creek. In 1852, he settled near it on twelve acres of land which was included in the purchase. In 1855, Samuel I. Snoddy purchased Mosier's interest and became the sole proprietor. At that time, it consisted of a saw mill and one set of burrs for grinding corn. In 1858, he bought 78 acres next to the mill acreage. A brush dam was first used, then a log dam. In 1867, he took away the mill and began the building of a 3-story and basement flouring mill, 36 by 40 feet, with a run of three sets of burrs. This was completed in 1868. At this time, he bought 160 acres of land. Samuel I. operated the mill until 1888, then sold it to his two sons, William Irwin and Milton Washington Snoddy, who remodeled and added the roller system machinery and operated it until 1898. William then sold his part to his brother, Milton. Up to this time, the mill had a wooden dam. In 1906, Milton had the Dody brothers build a concrete dam at the cost of $5,000. It extended

126 feet across Coal Creek, making a permanent reservoir and furnishing power to the mill. Upon the death of Milton in 1917, the mill passed on to his son, Walter, who operated it until 1946. It remained a landmark of history since then. The mill could grind up to 30 bushels a day - corn meal or flour. After completing the 4-story mill, Samuel I. prophesied this to be a good point for trade in provisions and goods. Before 1870, the opening of the coal fields, known now as Stringtown, brought to Snoddy's Mill it's railroad. It had several names; (1) Attica and Terre Haute, (2) Newcastle and Danville, and (3) Chicaro, Danville, and Vincennes. It extended from Coal Creek to Bismark, Illinois. Stringtown had a population of 2,000-3,000 at one time, scattered over and among the hills. Many buildings were erected in Stringtown, Bunkertown, and Snoddy's Mill. In 1872, Samuel I. built a store building near his mill in which he put a general stock and included a post office. In 1877, another building was erected and the dry goods store and post office relocated to it. The first store, a grocery store, was operated by George Keller. He was a step-son of Jane Snoddy Keller, whose first husband was John Snoddy (died in ca 1855-1857), son of William Snoddy and Mary Ann Irwin. The same store was later operated by a son of Samuel I., Chauncey Snoddy. He died on October 8, 1900 and his widow closed the store in April of 1902. Elmer O. Snoddy, fourth son, operated the dry goods store until 1904 when he relocated and operated a bank in Redmon, Illinois. The 2-story buildings were torn down and a large barn was built by Samuel Ellis Snoddy on his farm east of the bridge. Another building was a drug store managed by Charles M. Coggins, M.D., husband of Mary Odilla Snoddy. A blacksmith shop was the next to be built. Samuel I. also built several neat dwellings. His first home, southwest of the mill, was later damaged by flood. He then built at the top of the hill, south of Stringtown, looking down on the mill and the other six large homes. His house was torn down in 1921 and is not a part of the Harlan Weatherman home east of Cates. The six houses in a row at the foot of the hill were the homes of: 1. Martha Snoddy Staley - George Keller (torn down). 2. Sarah Elizabeth Snoddy Cook - Samuel E. and Leona Snoddy 3. John H. Snoddy - E.O. Snoddy (torn down and moved to the Coggin's farm). 4. Dr. Charles M. and Mary O. Snoddy Coggins (owned by Noble Adams). 5. Milton W. Snoddy - H. McClain. 6. Chauncey Snoddy - Walter Snoddy. On May 12, 1899, Samuel I. Snoddy became ill with pneumonia and at noon on Saturday, May 20, he passed away. His funeral, on of the largest that ever occurred in Wabash Township, was held on the following Tuesday in his home. Rev. Andrew J. Marshall of the Baptist Church, gave the funeral discourse. Burial was in Coal Creek/Snoddy Cemetery with Mont Board, funeral director of Covington, Indiana in charge. The customary black hearse, drawn by black horses, was used. The pall bearers were the following leading citizens of Wabash and Fulton Townships: J.M. Conover, Manford Conover, Philip Grubbs, Amos Grubbs, Harry and Henry Randolph. The family was all present, among whom were James Donaldson Snoddy, his brother, from Pleasanton, Kansas; daughters, Anna J. Roberts of Danville, IL and Emma M. Ferguson, Wichita, KS; and a son, John Henry Snoddy of Kansas City, MO; and Sarah Elizabeth Cook, a sister. Buired in the Snoddy Cemetery, Coal Creek, Indiana (12 miles south of Covington, Indiana). Samuel I. was an honorable man, who worked toward an honorable destiny, in an honorable way. He was a quiet and humble man, charitable to those in need who were worthy. He was acknowledged to be the leading man in his section. He began with comparataively nothing, and his success demonstrates the possibility for one to rise to fortune from proverty, when there is a will to climb. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Samuel I. Soon after marriage they emigrated to Parke Co IN where Mr. Snoddy worked in Wright's Mill. In 1851 he bought the saw and grist mill of John Headley, and in 1852 settled near it on 12 acres of land, which was included in the purchase. About 1858 he bought 78 acres adjoining the mill-seat. In 1868 he bought 160 acres more. He built a store near his mill about 1874 and began selling goods and in those 3 branches of industry (milling, merchandising and farming) Mr. Snoddy has succeeded so well that he owns 756 acres of land and the town he founded, containing 10 dwelling houses, all his own building. He is acknowledged to be the leading man of his section. He began with comparatively nothing and his success demonstrates the possibility for one to rise to fortune from even poverty's lowest depth, where there is "will" to climb. Mr. Snoddy is a quiet but thorough republican. his 3 brothers, John, James D. and George served in the Civil War. George died at his home in KS from disease contracted in the army. Notes for JOHN TENBROOK SNODDY: Found at: http://genealogytrails.com/mich/washtenaw/schoolunivbio.html JOHN TENBROOK SNODDY, B. S. Major 7th Regiment Kansas Cavalry Attorney-at-Law. Editor: Died at Mound City, Kansas, April 21, 1864. He was born in Lycoming County, Pa., November 10, 1835. He removed in 1851 to Indiana. During 1852 and 1853 he attended a part of the time the Western Manual Labor School near Annapolis, Parke County, Indiana. In the fall of 1854 he entered the University of Michigan and was graduated in 1858. He immediately went to Cleveland, Ohio and began the study of the law with Chase & Slade. At the January term of the Ohio Supreme Court (Jan. 2, 1859) he was admitted to practice. In the early spring of 1859 he located at Leavenworth, Kansas Territory to practice in partnership with Joel Moody, B. S., his college classmate. In the fall of 1859 he removed from Leavenworth to Mound City, in Linn Co., Kansas. In the latter part of that year, or early in 1860, he married Maria Moody of Oberlin, Ohio. From the time he located at Mound City, up to his enlistment in the Union Army he practiced law, and edited a newspaper at Mound City. In the fall of 1860, he was elected to the Territorial Legislature of Kansas and was serving in that body when the state was admitted to the Union. He took an active part with the free state men in the border troubles and defended them vigorously in his paper and on the stump. When the war broke out, and enlistments began in Kansas, for three years service he volunteered. This was in June 1861, but owing to some trouble, the batallion in which he had enlisted was not mustered into the U. S. service and he returned to Mound City. In July or early in August, 1861, the raising of the 7th Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Cavalry was begun at Mound City and he was commissioned Adjutant of it. The Regiment was filled and mustered in at Fort Leavenworth. In the capacity of Adjutant he served until the summer of 1862, when under an order from the War Department mustering out all Regimental Adjutants not line officers, he was mustered out. After a very short time, however, he was commissioned Major of the same Regiment, and returned to his command in the field and served with it in the capacity of Major until the summer of 1863, when he was compelled by the failure of his health to resign. He returned to his home in Mound City in the fall of 1863, almost a complete physical wreck. He again opened his law office, but was unable to do any considerable work. On April 1st, 1864, he and his brother James D. Snoddy, published the first number of the Border Sentinel. At this time, however, he had so declined physically that he was scarcely able to leave his house. On the 21st day of April, 1864, he died at his home in Mound City. Child of JOHN SNODDY and UNKNOWN is: i. JEROME GODWIN5 SNODDY, b. Abt. 1855, KS; d. Unknown.

He enlisted in Company C of the 137th Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry, and on the organization of the company was elected sergeant, and subsequently was advanced to the rank of captain. This company was mustered out of service June 1, 1863. Captain Snoddy at once undertook the organization of a new regiment, which was mustered in as the 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, with him as Lieutenant Colonel. He continued as one of the commanding officers of the much hard service, and as captain and colonel he participated in some of the most noteworthy engagements of the war, including Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and in all of the important battles in and around Petersburg. He was at Appomattox in April 1865, when General Grant accepted the surrender of Lee's forces. Following the assassination of President Lincoln his regiment was on provost guard duty at Washington during the trial and execution of the conspirators. Colonel Snoddy was twice seriously wounded during the war. Having gained distinction as a soldier, Colonel Snoddy then located at Sedalia, Missouri, and was in practice of the law there until 1885. In that year he removed to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, and from that point went to participate in the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1893. He was one of the successful homestead seekers and located a claim of Government land three miles south of Alva. He continued the practice of law at Alva until his death, which occurred suddenly at Montrose, Colorado August 12, 1908. In the year of statehood and the year preceding his death he was the republican nominee for justice of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma.

Notes for ERSKINE WILLIAM DURHAM SNODDY: Was a lawyer.ERSKINE WILLIAM SNODDY - "A Standard History of Oklahoma", Vol. 3. page 1168 In the law and in the realm of practical affairs the name Snoddy has many distinctive associations with Oklahoma, beginning with the pioneer development of the old territory. Erskine W. Snoddy is a prominent lawyer of Alva, and his father before him was distinguished in the same profession, both in Oklahoma and elsewhere. Erskine William Snoddy was born March 4, 1871, at Sedalia, Missouri, a son of William W .S. and May M. (LONG) Snoddy. His father was born January 25, 1837, in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, of Irish parentage. Erskine W. Snoddy grew up and received his education partly in Missouri and partly in Kansas. He attended a Catholic school at Sedalia, Missouri, and in 1887, at the age of sixteen, began work as a teacher and for four years followed that vocation in Barber County, Kansas. In 1891 he was appointed a United States deputy marshal for the Territory of Oklahoma and thus came into close touch with affairs during some of the most important openings of new territory. It was an office of great hazard and responsibility during the wild and wooly period of Northwestern Oklahoma, and he discharged his duties in that capacity for a period of seven years. In the meanwhile he had taken up ;and pursued steadily the study of law under the direction of his father. In 1900, having been admitted to the bar, he began practice at Alva. In 1901 he was appointed referee in bankruptcy for the old Sixth Judicial District, and held that office until Oklahoma became a state in 1907. In 1902 came election as city attorney of Alva, an office which by repeated re-election he has filled to the present time. For many years he has been one of the leaders in the republican party in Northern Oklahoma and in 1911 was nominated by that party for justice of the Criminal Court of Appeals. Mr. Snoddy is a member of the Masonic Order and the Benevolent and protective Order of Elks. At Kiowa, Kansas, December 1, 1892, he married Miss Sarah NICHOLSON, who was born March 4, 1873 at Shawneetown, Illinois, a daughter of Andrew and Martha Nicholson, early settlers of Barber County, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Snoddy have one daughter, Frieda May, who was born November 4, 1895, and completed her education in the Oklahoma Northwestern State Normal School at Alva. On March 25, 1915, she married Harold WHITE, a building contractor of Oklahoma City. 1900 Census, Fritzlen, Woods Co, OK Erskine Snoddy 29 Feb 1871 Sarah 27 Feb 1873 Freda 5 Nov 1895 Cook (brother) 26 July 1878 1910 Census, Alva, Woods Co, OK Erskine W. This article was taken from The Northwest Cattleman, First Quarter, 1947. The writer of this story was E. W. SNODDY aka William Erskin Durham SNODDY. In the spring of 1892, the Dalton gang robbed the southbound Santa Fe passenger train at Red Rock, Okla., about 10 o'clock at night. Red Rock at that time was just a handful of men and a section house. As the Daltons were leaving, they saw the telegraph operator with his instruments and, believing he was telegraphing news of the hold-up, very callously shot through the window of the office, killing the boy. About 10 o'clock the next morning the section gang, working on the Rock Island railroad at Wild Horse, north of Enid, saw the Daltons crossing the track and going west, but at that time the men knew nothing of the robbery of the night before. They saw that the Daltons had a pack horse, one white horse in the outfit, and the six men were heavily armed. At the time I was a Deputy United States Marshall of Oklahoma, in fact, the only one west of the Rock Island in the Cherokee Strip, and I lived at Kiowa, Kan., on the border. Guthrie was the Territorial Capital at the time. I received a telegram early the next morning after the robbery to load my horse on a cattle car, which, the wire said, the local freight would set for me at the stockyards at Kiowa, and go with a posse coming from Guthrie, via Winfield and Wellington, in Kansas, in pursuit of the robbers. Since I was more familiar with the country in the vicinity of Waynoka, that was where I planned to unload the posse and start chasing the robbers. My horse was loaded and waiting when the down 3 o'clock passenger train pulled into Kiowa with a cattle car attached, loaded with the horses of the posse. Seven of the best men on the United States Marshall's force, namely Heck Thomas, William Tilghman, Ransom Payne, Chris Madsen, John Hixon, sheriff of Logan County, Okla., at Guthrie, Tillman Lilly and a deputy sheriff of Logan County, and Frank Rinehart, made up the members of the posse. We unloaded at the stockyards at Waynoka. There was nothing there at the time but the section house and a small telegraph office, used only in cattle shipping season in the fall. The cattle had all been taken out of the Strip at that time, having been ordered out by President Cleveland, but there were a few small herds on the north line dodging the soldiers. When we unloaded at Waynoka the wife of the section foreman told us that two heavily armed men on horseback, had come to the section house and inquired for mail, and she had given them two letters from Independence, Kans., but had forgotten to whom they were addressed. At that time mail would be thrown out at the section houses, and was called "Outside Mail" by the trainmen. She told us the men had come from the southeast and had departed that way. As we had brought no lunches and there were no places where we could obtain anything to eat, we had the lady hurriedly put up a lunch for us, which we intended to carry with us. She also loaned us a coffee pot and some ground coffee. There was a dim trail going southeast from Waynoka, on the north side of the Cimarron River to the Twenty-One Crossing, and the trail being clearly visible and easily followed, it did not take long to find out the two men had taken that trail. When we came to the Twenty-One crossing we found out that four others had joined the trail of the two men, and then we were sure they were the same men who robbed the train at Red Rock. It was nearly dark, but we found out they had crossed the Cimarron, and had followed the trail up Greever Creek, going southwest. Going up Greever creek, the trail followed the divide, which had numerous dips and hollows in it, some were very deep. We followed the trail until dark caught us, and fearing we might leave the trail, we stopped for camp and supper in one of the hollows. We then staked out our horses, kindled a fire, made coffee and ate supper. The next morning, after a hasty breakfast, we saddled up and took the trail. Not much over a quarter of a mile from our camp, we found a

smoldering camp fire, dough poured out on the ground, a dear cleaned but not cut up, and one old saddle blanket. We knew it was where the Daltons had stopped, but either hearing us or seeing the light reflected from our fire, they had hastily saddled up and left. I have often wondered what would have happened if we had only gone on another quarter of a mile that night. Of course, we would have had a fight, but we could have cleaned up on them, for we had some mighty "good with the guns" men with us. I do not intend to include myself in that category. We hurried up the trail which they had followed, through the black jacks, over the divide and then on down to about where Seiling is now. There we met a herd of cattle of about 2,000 head, going to Dodge City, Kan., and right then, of course, we lost the trail. We did not ask the men in charge of the herd any questions, for it was well known to us that they would give out no information because they feared retaliation from the Daltons, and this was true of all the cattleman in the country at that time. We scouted all over the vicinity for several days, and never found where the gang had gone. Long afterwards we found out that the Daltons had a hide-out with a squaw man, who had married a Cheyenne woman, in the Cheyenne and Arapahoe country. This squaw man had a big pasture containing thousands of acres, and all the Daltons had to do was turn their horses into the pasture, near Independence, Kan., in the Indian Territory. While we were scouting around, Ransom Payne and I became separated from the rest of out men. We were combing the country around where Belva now is, but at that time there was only a section house there. The station was called Tucker, after the section foreman, who was a father fleshy man. West Creek runs east right south of Belva, with rather deep banks. It was Sunday morning and Payne and I were coming into Tucker from the north. Heavy elm timber at that time followed the course of the creek. Just before we got to the railroad we saw a white horse, tied in the edge of the timber. Payne said to me, "there they are, Snoddy, come on!" He pulled his Winchester out of his holster and spurred up his horse. I didn't want to follow, but I did. I was sure we would be mowed down before we ever got to the white horse. Just before we got to the creek, we saw a man run up out of the creek, look a moment, and then run back down out of sight. I was sure then that we would get a volley, but I couldn't back out, so away we went running to the edge of the bank. There we found---old man Tucker fishing in West Creek! Finally we gave up the hunt for the Daltons. The boys from Guthrie loaded their horses and went home. I went back to Kiowa. That's the story of when the Daltons came to Waynoka. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Alva Republican - November 30, 1894 - http://www.okolha.net/smock_sours.htm ????????? Questionable death date Snoddy, Erskine W. was assigned to Oklahoma Territory, Alva District on July 15, 1893, serving with Gus Hadwiger and was appointed by Marshal Evett Nix. During the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1893, Erskine was in charge of the settlers that came by train to Alva. In November of 1894, several drunk men from Wintan, Frank Brown, James Brown, J. R. Knight, and Charles Kitchen caught officer Snoddy alone to threatened him. Their anger, caused by an old grudge started in an argument and led to a drunken gun fight using Winchester rifles. Snoddy was fatally wounded, but before his death he was able to kill Frank Brown and wound the rest of his assassins, who escaped. He was born on February 4, 1871. 42. BEULAH CHRISTINA5 SNODDY (WILLIAM WALLACE SCHOOLEY4, JAMES3, JAMES2, ?SAMUEL1) was born Sep 16, 1882 in Sedalia, Pettis Co, MO, and died Jul 02, 1966 in Oklahoma City, OK. She married DAVID CANNON "PAT" OATES Bet. 1901 - 1908, son of WYATT OATES and CAROLINE EDWARDS. He was born Aug 1871 in Colbert Co, AL, and died 1914 in Alva, Woods Co, OK. Notes for DAVID CANNON "PAT" OATES: Obit: was taken from Renfrew's Record of Alva, Oklahoma dated Friday January 23, 1914. David Cannon "Pat" OATES A Gallant Officer Meets Death Bravely A thrill of horror and of grief filled the hearts of thousands of people throughout Oklahoma and more especially Old Woods county, when the fatal words were flashed over the wires about 6:00 o'clock, Monday evening, that Deputy Assistant Warden Pat OATES had been instantly killed in a desperate endeavor to prevent an outbreak of the convicts at the penitentiary at McAlester. It was one of the most desperate outbreaks on record and within a half hour, seven men lay dead, four officers, guards and a visitor, and the three desperadoes who made a dash for liberty, four persons being wounded. The dead are D. C. OATES, deputy warden; H. H. DROVER, head of the Bertillon department; F. C. GODFREY, guard, and Judge John R. THOMAS, of Muskogee; Charley KOONTZ, China REED, and Tom LANE, the convicts who made the break. The wounded, Miss Mary FOSTER, telephone operator; John MARTIN, turnkey and C. L. WOOD, guard. The attempted break for liberty occurred at the close of the day's work. The convicts held Miss FOSTER and Frank H. RICE, parole officer, in front of them, using them as a shield to protect themselves from the fire of the officers

Page 29: Descendants of James Snoddy, Sr. · 2011. 6. 29. · Descendants of James Snoddy, Sr. Generation No. 1. 1. JAMES2 SNODDY, SR. (?SAMUEL1) was born Abt. 1755 in Co Antrim, NI, and died

and the guards. Only one of the convicts, KOONTZ, was wounded, and after killing the four men in the warden's offices, they jumped into Warden DICK's light wagon to which one horse was attached and taking Miss FOSTER and RICE with them to confuse the fire of those who might follow them, they drove rapidly away. Half a mile out they were over taken by R. J. RITCHIE, keeper of the bloodhounds. Hearing RITCHIE coming, REED, who murdered Pat OATES, looked back and was shot squarely in the forehead, and fell out of the buggy, dead, pulling the girl out with him. In quick succession, RITCHIE, who was a crack shot, dispatched the other two outlaws, thus protecting society from such desperadoes and saving the taxpayers a whole lot of useless expense in dragging their prosecutions through the courts. It is believed that a gun was furnished the outlaws from outside the prison and with this they made the break for liberty. The girl had a terrible experience in seeing six men's lives so suddenly snuffed out. All of the men killed by the outlaws left families. The death of Assistant Warden, D. C. OATES, was a great shock, not only to his family, but to thousands of friends. He was a brave and fearless officer, a loving husband, father, son and brother, a true and loyal friend. He was one of the most sunny-tempered men we ever met, and had a smile that never came off. A friend remarked since the tragedy, "It is probable that Pat died with a smile on his lips." Few men were more courageous than he was. When he came running with his weapon, a boy said, "don't go in there, they have guns." "I have to," said Pat as he went on to the scene of the conflict. Even in the heat of the fight his love of fair play was uppermost. When he ran to the side door, heading the outlaws off and had the drop on REED, he withheld his fire and said "REED, you drop that gun," but REED, taking instant advantage of Pat's generosity, fired, killing the gallant officer instantly. Mr. OATES had almost entire charge of the discipline of the 1300 prisoners. Warden DICK's attention has been given almost exclusively to planning the prison buildings and overseeing their construction, the management of the prison farm, etc., and the assistant warden's work was devoted chiefly to keeping the books. Mr. Oates' discipline was so humane and just that the great majority of the convicts would have fought for him rather than against him. Notwithstanding the terrible confusion at the time of the tragedy, no attempt was made by any other prisoners to escape and those who could lend any assistance at all lent it in trying to assist the officers. A negro prisoner, who was serving a six year term, tried to get a gun off the guards in order to prevent the escape of the three convicts and said afterwards that if he could have got a gun he would have died with "Mr. Pat" or prevented their escape. Mr. Oates was a native of Alabama, and came to Woods County at the opening of the Cherokee Strip. While running a little store at Walthall, in the southeastern part of old Woods County, in the fall of 1894, two robbers undertook to hold him up one night on the road near his store. In the fight that ensued, Mr. OATES was shot through the body, but he succeeded in wounding one of the robbers severely, and help coming, they rode away. Mr. OATES was brought to Alva to receive surgical attention and in the course of a few months had almost entirely recovered from his wound. It was long afterwards that he learned that the robber he shot was fatally hurt and died some ten days after the fight. In the spring of 1895 Mr. Oates became a deputy in Sheriff Clay McGRATH's office and served in this capacity with Sheriff McGrath until the summer of 1898, when he enlisted in the First Territorial regiment and was with the regiment in camp at Lexington, Kentucky; Athens, Georgia and other states in the south until mustered out with the regiment, without having been called into active service. In the fall of 1900 he was elected sheriff of Woods county, serving for two years, and was re-elected in the fall of 1902, with a majority of over 1200, the largest majority ever received by a candidate in old Woods county, and served as sheriff for two years longer. He took an active part in the statehood campaigns and served as assistant sergeant-at-arms during the constitutional convention.

During the summer of 1908 he was appointed deputy assistant warden of the state penitentiary at McAlester, which office he held until Monday, January 19, 1914, when he fell fighting to prevent the escape of prisoners. In the spring of 1901, Mr. OATES married Miss Beulah SNODDY, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. W. W. S. SNODDY, of this city, who with two children, survives him. In his death a great loss has fallen upon his family and friends. He died in the discharge of his duty, giving his life for the protection of the citizens of this state and the people will not soon forget the brave officer who never flinched in the discharge of a duty. The Last Sad Rites Rock Island passenger train, Thursday afternoon, brought the corpse of our late fellow citizen, D. C. OATES, one of the victims in the fearful tragedy at McAlester, today. Accompanying the return were Mrs. OATES and the children, Margery and William, Mrs. OATES' mother, Mrs. W. W. S. SNODDY, and son Erskine, Mr. Robert OATES, brother of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. HACKETT, friends of the bereaved family. A large number of the friends and associates of OATES met the train and the remains were then taken in charge by the undertaker and escorted to the residence of Attorney E. W. SNODDY, by the pall bearers and friends. Funeral services were held at the home of E. W. SNODDY, Friday at 10 o'clock a.m., conducted by the Rev. Edwards, pastor of the Baptist church of this city, after which all that was mortal of D. C. Oates, the friend neighbor and citizen, was led by a large procession to the AOUW cemetery and laid to rest. The deepest sympathy of the community is with the bereaved wife and children in their loss. [Above information provided by Marvin D. Snoddy] Vol. 3. page 1168 - "A Standard History of Oklahoma" Pat Oates was a conspicuous character in Oklahoma affairs. He was a pioneer settler and a peace officer of old Woods County, Oklahoma, having served by election as sheriff of the original county for two terms prior to statehood. He was assistant sergeant at arms in the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention in 1907 and in 1908 was appointed a deputy warden of the State Penitentiary at McAlester, and assisted in the work of building and supervising the new state prison until January 19, 1914 , when he was killed in a prison outbreak, at which time six other persons lost their lives. Pat Oates was born in Alabama in August , 1871, and was also a veteran of the Spanish-American war, having been sergeant in a company in the First Territorial United States Volunteers. He married BERNICE FERGUSON Oct 10, 1909 in Redmon, IL, daughter of HUGH FERGUSON and IDA ?. She was born Mar 04, 1891 in Redmon, IL, and died Dec 08, 1931 in IL. Notes for LEWIS OWEN SNODDY: Information found at website: http://www.memoriallibrary.com/IL/South/Bios/S/Snoddy~Lewis.htm © 2006~ Pam MARDOS Rietsch [email protected] LEWIS OWEN SNODDY. As one of the more prominent men to be identified with financial matters of his community, Lewis Owen Snoddy, cashier of the Farmers’ and Merchants’ Bank of Golden Gate, is eminently deserving of some mention in a historical and biographical work treating of Wayne county. Mr. Snoddy was born on April 6, 1888, in Covington, Indiana, and is the son of E. O. Snoddy, also a native of Indiana, born there in 1865, and the son of Samuel Snoddy. The latter was born in England and emigrated to America in his early manhood. E. O. Snoddy removed to Illinois in 1904, and is now conducting a banking business in Redmon, Illinois. The mother of Lewis Snoddy was Mary Trueman in her maiden days. She became the mother of four children, namely: Eva, married to P. 1600 Sam Horton, and living at Shumway, Illinois; Lewis Owen, of this review; Dean A., of Indianapolis, and Sherman, of Redmon, Illinois. The public schools of Covington, Indiana, afforded to Dr. Snoddy his elementary education, after which he attended Westfield (Ill.) College. For one year after finishing his studies he was assistant cashier of the Shumway Bank, following which he accepted an offer from the Farmers’ and Merchants’ Bank of Golden Gate, and he has been cashier of that important institution since its organization to the present time. The bank was organized October 9, 1909, as a private bank by H. J. Metcalfe, who has since acted as president of the institution; and C. A. French, who is vice president. Other members of the concern are H. T. Goddard, president of the First National Bank of Mt. Carmel; A. M. Stern, president of the First National Bank of Crossville; T. W. Hull, president of the First National Bank of Carmi, and B. French, Sr., of Belmont, Illinois. With such a coterie of well established and thoroughly responsible men in control of the bank, it is unnecessary to lay further stress upon the solidity and reliability of the institution. It has an individual responsibility of one million dollars, with deposits of thirty-five thousand dollars, and stock subscribed to the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars. It enjoys the favorable regard of the people of Golden Gate, and is known to be one of the solid and substantial financial houses of the county. Since its organization Mr. Snoddy has been cashier of the bank, and has fulfilled his duties in a manner highly creditable to one of his years, and which has indicated his entire fitness for a career in the financial world. Mr. Snoddy was united in marriage on October 10, 1909, to Bernice Ferguson, of Redmon, daughter of Hugh Ferguson of that place. Two children have been born to them,—Christine Ferguson and Max Eldem, the latter born March 16, 1912. The family are members of the United Brethern church. Mr. Snoddy is a Republican, politically speaking, and is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
