1. JAMES EDWARD1 WISE, SR. was born February 01, 1817 in Kent County, DE, anddied August 28, 1904 in Berlin. Md. He married ELIZABETH TUNNELL. She was bornApril 15, 1829 in DE, and died April 17, 1898 in Berlin. Md.

Mr. James E. Wise Dead

Mr. James E. Wise died at his home in Berlin Monday night at the advanced age ofeighty four years. He received a gold headed cane in 1899 for being the oldest manin the undertaking business in the United States. He was born in Milford, Del.,February 1, 1817. His parents were originally from Virginia, and at the age of nineyears he went to Philadelphia and became a clerk at a grocery store. At the age of 17years he became an apprentice to a cabinet maker, and three years later he finishedhis trade. He worked in Milford, Del., in the year 1842. In 1844 he married MissElizabeth Tunnel Short, of Dagsboro, Del., and in 1845 took up residence in Berlin,where he was actively engaged in the undertaker's business until his death. His wife,who was 12 years younger than himself, died in 1898.

He was a Democrat in politics, and was enthusiastic for the success of his party,though he never held public office, nor was he ever a candidate. He was a prominentmember of Stevenson Methodist Episcopal Church, of Berlin, and served on theofficial board in that church for about 45 years, have joined the church by letter in1849.

He leaves one son and five daughters, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grand-children.

James was a cabinet maker before moving to Berlin who according to censusrecords had a number of apprentices work for him while also living at their home.This would seem to indicate a successful word working business. The family alsobuilt furniture and at a 1980s estate auction, a chest of drawers as spotted withJames' name on the back as the maker.

He started an undertaker and cabinetry business called James E. Wise & Co., anoperation which became a family business. He and his sons were cabinet makerswho built the caskets, and his daughters were millinery workers who lined them.

James Sr.'s sons, Willis (Mark Willis) and Edward (James, Jr.) both became

undertakers and worked with their father in the business. We are not sure where, butJames became formally trained as an undertaker - one of the first on the easternshore to be trained in the skills of embalming.

Mr. "Jimmy" Wise, as Ms. Anna Burbage called him, trained his sons Willis andEdward, as well as, many of the local undertakers at the time including: JohnBurbage, Sr. & Henry Burbage from Berlin, MD; as well as, Mr. Hearn from SnowHill, MD; and Mr. Vernon Stevenson from Pocomoke, MD.

In 1899, James was honored as the oldest undertaker still active in the United Statesby Batesville Coffin Company in Batesville, Indiana. At that time they estimated hehad made over 7,000 arrangements. He was awarded a gold tipped cane which hewas ultimately buried with him. His picture still hangs in the lobby of what is nowBatesville Casket Company and company representatives have noted that they makedaily reference to "Mr. Wise" for his length of service to the community and the canethat he carried to his grave.

Although his son Mark Willis Wise died in 1900 (at age 45), James Sr. and James Jr.continued to operate the funeral home. James Sr. passed away in 1904 (at age 87)and Edward passed away four years later in 1908 at the age of 42. At the time ofJames Sr,'s death, Edward sold a 25% share of the undertaking business to Mr. JohnBurbage. In 1910 after Edward died, the remaining 75% interest of James Wise &Co. was sold to John Burbage and his brother, along with 100% interest Edward'sstone and marble business.

The obituary for James' son, Edward, included later in this report, speaks of theposition the family held in the local community.

The business operated for a while a John Burbage & Brother Funeral Home, then asJ. Burbage & Son and eventually became Burbage Funeral Home. Kirk Burbage, thecurrent owner, is the 4th generation Burbage who has carried on the tradition sinceJames Wise Sr.

At the time of James Sr. death at the age of 87, he had also buried his wife, 4 of his10 children and three grandchildren. He is buried under what is now the rear sectionStephen's Methodist Church. His headstone was later moved to EvergreenCemetery in Berlin, MD.

The Wise family was very involved in the Stevenson Methodist (Episcopal) Church inBerlin, MD. James joined the church in 1849 and Elizabeth in 1843. There is astained glass window on northern wall noting "In memory of James E. and ElizabethWise and family".

As a point of curiosity, in 1890, there was a the Stevenson Methodist minister thatcame in for a year and moved to Pocomoke named W. Allen Wise

James Sr.'s family home was on Main Street and lived in by at least threegenerations. In a later section, we discuss the family home and properties owned by

Notes for ANDASIA ROBIN WISE:Daisy was baptized at Stevenson Methodist Church on 3/4/1859(witnesses Robert Baker & Mr. Wise), joined the church in 1870, wasTreasurer of the Sunday School, Secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary, andwas a member of The Ladies Society.

Daisy never married. She taught her nephew, John W. Oltman, in the4th grade and when in school required that he call her Miss Wise likethe rest of the students. She also taught music for the 1st and 4thgrades John Wise Oltman and Mrs. Anna Burbage both remember heras their school teacher.

Aunt Daisy lived with family at the family residence in Berlin her entirelife until her death in 1940.

Her obituary in the Snow Hill, Democratic Messenger, 9/5/1940 readas follows:

Miss Wise, 82, Former School Teacher, Dead

Miss Daisy Robins Wise, Age 82 years, prominent resident of Berlinand a former school teacher in the Worcester County public schools,died Tuesday afternoon at her residence in Berlin, following anextended illness. She had been in declining health since a fall shesustained a few years ago.

Born at Berlin in November 1857, the deceased was the daughter ofthe late James E. Wise, widely known undertaker and cabinet maker,and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Tunnell Wise.

For around 50 years Miss Wise taught in the schools of WorcesterCounty, retiring 22 years ago when she became 70 years of age. She

taught several generations and lived to see her students attain fame invarious fields of industry.

Miss Wise was a faithful and active member of Stevenson MethodistChurch in Berlin all her life. At one time she was a member of thechurch choir. She was also a Past Worth Matron of Holly Chapter,Order of the Eastern Star, at Berlin.

Highly respected by everyone, she was a kind Christian woman, adevoted sister and a valued member of her community life.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Alfred F. Powell, of Berlin, and byseveral nieces and nephews. One niece, Mrs. T. Edward Taylor andone nephew, Mr. Edmund Powell, resided with her.

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) from the residence inBerlin at 2 o'clock P.M. conducted by the Rev. O.H. Connolly,Methodist minister. Internment was made in the family burial lot inEvergreen cemetery, Near Berlin.

Edward Wise's Sudden Death

Prominent Undertaker in Berlin and Esteemed Citizen Passes Away.

Mr. J. Edward Wise, after a short illness passed away quietly Sunday,April 12th. Mr. Wise was a comparatively young man, yet had made ahost of friends who were shocked to hear of his very sudden anduntimely death. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in the M. E.Church, which was filled with sorrowing friends. His pastor, Rev T.F.Beachamp, officiated, assisted by Rev. H. G. Budd of Crisfield, andRev. W. H. Bancroft, of the Presbyterian Church, Berlin.

The singing was very impressive; a trio by Rev. and Mrs. Bancroft andC.B. Taylor and a duet, "The Home of the Soul," by Mrs. Bancroft andMr. Taylor, after which his remains were interred in the churchyard.

The great number of floral offerings spoke silently of many sincere andloving friends. He leaves five sisters: Mrs. Annie Powell, Mrs. A.F.Powell, Mrs. Sarah Lecato, and Miss Daisy Wise, all of Berlin; and Mrs.John Brittingham of Wachapreague, VA.

The active pall bearers were: Messrs. R.J. Showell, Ara Burbage,Samuel Quillen, Jr., Orlando Harrison, George Bratten and WilberKeas. Honorary pall bearers: Messrs. Charles Taylor, Jehu Quliien,Herbert Powell, G.E. Henry, W. J. Collins, C.B. Taylor, Dr, EbeHolland, J.E. Smith, Thomas J. Whaley, L.T. Quillen, Jenkins Bowen,George E. Hammond, W.A. Disharoon, G.W. Purnell, H.L. Jarvis,Frank Bartlett, and H. W. Taylor. Funeral Directors - Messers. J. W.Burbage of Berlin and George Hill, of Salisbury.

We should not mourn as those having no hope, for he has been aChristian and a member of the M.E. Church for several years.

3/24/1869. Witnesses included Sallie M. Wise, D.C. Hudson, George W. Marshall,Ellen Powell (or Powders), John W. Pitts and others. The minister charged $10 forthe service.

Mary and John stayed in Berlin initially and in 1870 were living next door to Mary'sfather, James Wise, Sr.

Granville W. was born in Maryland in 1872 and then Mary & John moved toAccomack County, Virginia by 1880 where the census notes John as a merchant. Allof their other children, Annie M., John R., William J., and Daisy W. were all born inVirginia.

Also in 1880, Mary's sister, Sarah M. (Wise) Hudson, by then a widow, and one ofSarah girls, Lillie D. was living with Mary and John.

John A. Brittingham continued to be listed as a merchant in the Pungoteague areaand appears to have died between 1910 and 1920. Mary & John's daughter Daisy,married William H. Whealton and the 1920 census shows Mary living with them inChincoteague.

It seems likely that Mary E. (Wise) Brittingham likely died between 1920 and 1930since she no longer appears in census records

probably in Berlin. Her husband must have died between 1875 and 1880. By 1880,Sarah was a widow and along with one of her daughters, Lillie D. was living with Maryand John Brittingham in Virginia. Sarah's trade was listed millenary. Sarah's otherdaughter; Henrietta was living in Berlin, with Sarah's father, James Wise, Sr.

Lillie died in 1883 and Henrietta in 1886.

In 1900 Sarah was living in same area, Pungoteague, Accomack County, Virginiaand her trade was listed millenary. In 1910, Sarah, now Sarah M. Lecato, was livingwith her sisters Daisy & J. Anna (Wise) Powell in Berlin, MD. The census lists her asa retired merchant.

Her second husband, George W. Lecato is listed as one of her nearby neighbors (acouple houses down) in 1900 in VA. It appears she married and was again widowedbetween the years of 1900 and 1908.

We assume Sarah died between 1910 and 1920 since she drops off the censusrecords.

In the Berlin Advance (of which only two copies are known to exist) 10/31/1908

There is a social listing that says: "LeCato & Wise have opened up a nice line ofFancy Goods and Notions in the Adkins building, which they will be glad to have youcall and examine." This is Miss Dora Wise and the widow Sarah (Wise Hudson)LeCato.

The 1880 census shows Julia Annie Wise Powell living with her husband, Edwin J.Powell, at Edwin's parent's home in Berlin, MD. Edwin is listed as Proprietor of aLivery Stable and Julia as being at home.

As of the June 5th, 1900 census, Annie, Edwin and their children Edmund (Edwin)and Elizabeth, they were living in the Wise family home on Main Street in Berlin withher father, and siblings - Daisy & James. Annie's husband, Edwin and her father,James Wise, Sr. both died in 1900.

In the1920 and 1930 census records, Annie, her sister Daisy and daughter Elizabethwere living in the Main Street home. In 1920, another of Annie's sisters Sarah wasliving with them.

Within the Snow Hill, Democratic Messenger, 9/25/1925 we read:

Mr. Edmund Powell returned Saturday to his home in Philadelphia after attending thefuneral of his other, Mrs. J. Annie Powell, whose death occurred on Wednesday,September 16th. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. H. C.Hallman, from her home, on Friday afternoon. Internment was made in the familyburial lot in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. William Whealton, of Chincoteague, Va., attended the funeral of heraunt, Mrs. J. Annie Powell, here last Friday.

It's not known how long she operated her business, butvarious people have commented on how good her homemade ice cream was. Funeral services for Mrs. Georgiana Wise, 80, who died at her home on Baker Streetin Berlin last Friday afternoon, were held Sunday at 2 o'clock by the Rev. J. E.Connelly at the home.

Mrs. Wise had been in ill health for a number of years. She was born in WorcesterCounty and was the daughter of the late William and Mary Marshall. In November of1877, she was married to M. Willis Wise, who died in 1900. Until her healthprevented it, she was an active member of the Methodist Church and a member ofthe Ladies' Aid and Missionary Society.

Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Pallbearers were Edmund Powell, JohnBrittingham, C.W. Marshall, Paul M. Rhodes, A.P. Christopher, and Edward Taylor ofBerlin.

She was survived by four daughters, Miss Dora Wise, Mrs. Nellie Johnson, Mrs. JaneOltman and Mrs. Mary (Wise) Curran, of Philadelphia.

IIn 1900 Clara (Wise) Powell and her husband Alfred were living in Berlin with theirtwo daughters, Anna Louise and Etta. Alfred was listed (I believe) as a farmer. By1920, one of their daughters, Louise, had married Alonzo Christopher, a fruit grower,and were within a house or two of Clara and Alfred. Etta was still at home with herparents.

By 1930, the census clearly notes that they were living on Main Street. Etta hadmarried Paul Rhodes who was born in PA. Paul was a haberdashery merchant.Louise and Alonzo were still living a few doors down the street.

Alfred passed away in 1934 and Clara in 1943.

Notes for ELLEN MARINER WISE:Nellie joined the in Stevenson Methodist Church in 1896 and was the President of theJunior League. She was a teacher when she married Garfield Johnson, then acarpenter, on 12/16/1903. The fee was $5.00 and W. J. Collins & others werewitnesses.

Ellen aka Aunt Nellie and Uncle Garfield ran a country store in the location of theDMO Oil Company in Berlin (at the corner of Williams and Bay streets).

The 1910 census has Nellie, Garfield then a Merchant at a General Store and theirdaughter Beatrice, then living at the Baker Street home with Georgina Wise, as wellas, Dora and Jane, Nellie's sisters.

By 1920, that had moved into or built the house on North Main Street on the Wiseproperty along the south border of the current Oltman property. Nellie and Garfield'shome is where Barb Evans now lives.

After Uncle Garfield died of kidney failure in 1942, she moved back into the BakerStreet home with her sister Dora. She lived with her sister Jane (Wise) Oltman thelast six months of life. Nellie died in 1959.

Either before or after Nellie moved in with Dodie, her daughter Bea and husbandPaul, moved into the family North Main Street home, next to Murray & Jane Oltman.Bea and Paul had been living down the street a bit closer to Berlin until then.

Notes for MURRAY OLTMAN:He took a correspondence course in drafting when he was approximately 17(perhaps from Pittsburgh Civil Engineering School) he then went on to Carnegie Techfor two years. He first came to Berlin, MD around 1908-9, presumably to see thefarm his father had acquired. Murray later purchased the farm in Berlin from hismother and afterwards him and his wife, Jane Wise Oltman, moved there.

He probably met Jane in church in Berlin. He was working at the Presteel CarCompany in Philadelphia, PA (a division of Balwin Locomotive Co.) as a draftsmanwhen they were married. The marriage was witnessed by Mary E. Wise and RebeccaOltman. Jane probably got homesick and they returned to Berlin approximately sixmonths after their marriage. By this time she was pregnant with a boy who was laterstillborn. After arriving in Berlin, Murray tried farming for a while and then worked witha local plumber, Carson Baldwin. Eventually, in 1920, he went into the plumbingbusiness for himself.

Murray was visited at least once by the wife of one of his half brothers, BlanchOltman, who lived in New Jersey. He also had relatives in New York whom he visited.We aren't sure of who they were or how they were related. Murray recalled thatfather was at times a stern man and once or twice pinned Murray 's ears back foravoiding a fight. In his younger years he took violin lessons and worked in a machineshop. He delivered papers as his father had a large paper route.

He was active in the community and the church. Joined the Stevenson MethodistChurch on 1/21/1916 and was President of Epworth League 5/1919, on the Board ofTrustees, Treasurer of the Church and a member of the Methodist Men.

He was extremely well liked and respected by those who knew him. An avidmusician, he sang in the church choir and played a variety of instruments in severalof the local bands. In his later years he maintained an extensive rose and flowergarden.

Murray died on June 23, 1971 while in a Peninsula General Hospital and is buried atEvergreen Cemetery in Berlin, MD.

Some time later Bea and Paul moved into Bea's parents home, where they lived untilPaul passed away. Shortly after this, Bea built a home just north of Jane and MurrayOltman's home. Bea and the kids stayed with Aunt Dodie at the Baker Street homewhile the new home was being built.

The 1880 census shows James E. Wise, Sr. living at his home in Berlin, with his wife,Elizabeth, his daughters Andasia and Clara, his son James E. Wise, Jr. and hisgranddaughter Henrietta (by Sarah wise and William Hudson). Sarah was a widow andliving with her sister, Mary Elizabeth, in VA at the time. Also listed is Angeline (Annie)Hudson, age 36, teacher, and is listed as a sister. She was the sister of Wm. Hudson.

According to the Oltman family's N. Main Street deed, the land where Barb Evanscurrently lives belonged to James Edward Wise Jr. before his granddaughter Nellie(Wise) and Garfield Johnson lived there.
