Among the prominent pioneer families of Muskingum county, Ohio, the Rileys take a foremost place. Joseph Riley's grandfather, William Riley, came from the north of Ireland and was of Scotch-Irish descent. He emigrated to America at a period antedating the Revolutionary war, served as a soldier in the struggle for independence, and was under Mad Anthony Wayne, against the Indians. He was married in the Old Dominion and became the father of seven children: John, William, Mariah, Robert, Hannah, Polly and Samuel. When an old man he came to Muskingum county, Jackson township, Ohio, and settled north of Frazeysburg. He brought all his family with him except Samuel, and lived to be quite aged. He had been wounded when a soldier and always felt the effect of this. He lived the life of a true Christian and was honored and respected. His son Samuel, father of our subject, was born in Washington county, Penn., October 30, 1796, received but little education, and came to Muskingum county, Ohio, in 1813. He married Miss Anna. K. McDonald, daughter of Joseph McDonald, who was originally from Ireland. After coming to the United States, the latter settled in Muskingum county, Ohio, and was among the early pioneers. The Catholic church now stands on the land which was part of his farm. he was a Presbyterian and an elder in the same for many years. He was the prime mover in building the old log Presbyterian church, the first in the township, and Mrs. Riley, when a girl, cooked for the men who built the church. Mr. McDonald's children were Margaret, Anna K., Rev. John (Presbyterian minister), and James. Mr. McDonald lived to be an old man and was well respected. To Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Riley were born nine children - George, Mariah, John, Joseph, Aaron, Alexander, Charles, Emily and Eliza are those who lived to grow to maturity. Mr. Riley settled on the farm now occupied by his son Charles, and as there was but little of the land cleared at that time he went actively to work to make improvements. He soon accumulated a handsome property and owned at the time of his death, which occurred on the 17th of September 1879, over 400 acres of excellent land. He began with nothing, and all that he accumulated was the result of his own industry and good management. In politics he was a republican and a strong Union man, during the was, sending three of his sons to fight for their country. Aaron enlisted in the Ninety-eight Ohio Volunteer infantry, served three years, and was in many battles. Charles was in an Ohio regiment. Alexander also served three years. Mr. Riley was a man well known and respected among the old pioneers. His son, Joseph Riley, was born June 25, 1833, on the farm in Muskingum township, and received an ordinary education in the district schools. On the 8th of September, 1865, he married Miss Frances Spencer, who was born on the 15th of July, 1842, and who was the daughter of Wilson and Sarah (Cole) Spencer. Wilson Spencer was the son of Foreman Spencer, who was of the early settlers of Muskingum township [See sketch of Joseph Spencer.] To Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Riley were born eight children: Wilson, Sarah K., Odessa, Joseph E., Orie F., Rose F., Laura S. and John T. After his union Mr. Riley settled on land purchased from his father, and gave his entire attention to tilling the soil. He is a prominent man of the county and is enterprising and industrious. he has educated his children and Orie F., after

His early education was received in the schools of his neighborhood, and at the high school at Dalton, Ohio. He followed the avocation of a teacher for several years, commencing at the age of seventeen years. He began reading medicine under the preceptorship of his father, and later attended Rush Medical College of Chicago, Illinois, graduating from that institution. He was married in 1850 to Miss Elizabeth Dorwin, a native of Mansfield, Ohio. Three children were born to this union - Charles D., Miles F. (a practicing physician of Fort Wayne, Indiana), and Jennie (deceased). Dr. Porter began the practice of medicine at Decatur, Adams County, Indiana, which he followed until 1862, when he was commissioned First Surgeon of the Eighty-ninth Indiana Infantry and went South with his regiment. He was taken prisoner at Munfordville, Kentucky, and returned home on parol. He was afterward exchanged and joined his regiment, and November 1, 1864, he was shot and killed by bushwhackers, near Lexington, Missouri. During his military service Dr. Porter attended the sick and wounded and is yet remembered by his comrades for his many good qualities and kindness to all, and they have perpetuated his memory in the name of the Grand Army post at Geneva. He was a true Union man, and in politics was a strong Republican. Kathleen,

I sent you three emails for review. You mentioned that George W. Riley, the son of William, age 16, was living in Ohio, but you didn't mention that he is also listed in the 1850 census, 10 years earlier, and he had a brother named Jacob. This makes me want to look at this family a little closer. When a child is very young, you can usually find him with his parents or grandparents. Since George was about 6 years old in 1850, one of the searches I did was of ALL Riley's living in Ohio in 1850. I found 45 individuals and began viewing each census page. Of those 45 individuals, 4 were George Riley and 1 was George W. Riley. You discarded this possiblity because of the pension information.

PENSION INFORMATION? You are basing a lot of assumptions that the pension information is for your G. W. Riley. Is there some verbal famiy history to confirm his seizures? I didn't see mention of family members in the information you sent me. It appears that George, himself, filed for the pension and provided medical records. There is a possiblity there were two different George W. Riley's living in the same area. One of the very first things I noticed when I began my research was that there were quite a number of George Riley's in Indiana.

TICKER CONNECTION: Sometimes it means taking the time to research another family tree to find the connection to your person.

ROSE FAMILY CONNECTION: William Riley, age 70, was living in Indiana with the Rose family. There must have been a reason for the migration from Ohio to Indiana. When a spouse died it was quite common for an older family member to go and live with a relative.

These are some thoughts and possibilities. Explore what I have sent you and I will keep on looking.

True RILEY Birth Date: 31 Oct 1904 Death Date: Jan 1959 Social Security Number: 308-28-2865 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Indiana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I heard the story about True from my Mom in bits and pieces over the years. I know Grandma Riley and my Mom never really liked to discuss True and it was a "don't speak ill of the dead" thing too. From what I recall, True got involved with a woman (I don't remember ever hearing a name) in Canada who relocated to Fort Wayne at the same time they did. The night he died, he told Grandma Riley and Mom (who was still living at home) he was going back to work, but he went to this woman's house and died on her doorstep. The woman was hysterical and called the house on Winter St. and told Mom that True had passed out. (Mom recalled telling the woman to loosen his tie and call an ambulance.) True wound up going to a different hospital than they thought and by the time they got to the right hospital, he had died of a heart attack. Grandma Riley fainted when she heard. Mom said the woman sent a big floral arrangement to the funeral and when Grandma Riley saw who it was from, she tore the whole thing to shreds. I can totally see her doing that - she was quite formidable. Anyway, that's pretty much all I ever heard about it. I wish I had a better story about him, but that's about all I ever knew. [From Susan Streeter Billian] ~~~~~~ Canada Wire and Cable Canada Wire and Cable Company was the first industry to locate in Leaside. In 1914, it contracted to manufacture 9.2 inch shells for World War I, so it purchased a sizeable acreage in the new Town of Leaside and formed the Leaside Munitions Company for production of the shells. After the war ended, the plants of the latter company stood idle for a while until the Durant Motor Company took over to produce the Durant and Star cars and Rugby trucks. This company ceased operations when the Great Depression set in, just a little over ten years later. By this time, the production of the Canada Wire and Cable Company had increased so substantially that it was able to take over the remaining buildings and added some. In 1959, the vertical continuous vulcanizing extruder tower was built, allowing the rubber around the cable to mold evenly as it was vertically dropped. This was installed to improve the quality of large size thermosetting insulated cables. Well into the 1960s, Canada Wire and Cable was continuing to expand across Canada, leading to reorganization and development during the 1970s, with the updating of facilities in full process. The work force reached 2,700 employees by1978, with annual sales of 100 million. In the 1990s, Alcatel, a French company, which started life a hundred years earlier as a electric utility and is now a major player in the high tech industry, bought Canada Wire and Cable, by then a division of Noranda Inc. Alcatel moved its operations from Leaside to Markham in 1996 and sold the Leaside property. The buildings were demolished in 1999. For a while the vulcanizing extruder tower was left standing as a memento of this early enterprise, but it was demolished in 2002. . For more about the industries and people of Leaside see "Leaside" Jane Pitfield editor. ~~~~~ True B. Ida attended various schools, including North Brick, two years at a county school near Colon, Michigan, and a short time at the Jacob School, later known as the Lincoln School, the Washington School, two years at the Old Central School in Decatur where Margaret Moran and Iva Spangler taught, two years at Anthony Wayne School in Fort Wayne and she graduated from Central High School June 14, 1930, and in the midst of the Depression, Ida and her brothers, Herman and Ernest Girod, set up housekeeping together and made a home for themselves. Herman and Ernest worked at whatever jobs were available and also did some farming. About two weeks after Merle and Ida were married, they moved into a house in Salem, owned by Brent Riley, Merle's father, to whom they paid the sum of $5 per month rent, for eight years. They bought and lived there four more years and then sold the home to Merle's youngest brother Norris and his wife Ruth. At the time they had two children, Steven Brent Riley five and Gale Nelson Riley, one year old. In 1946, they purchased a farm of sixty acres from John Harold Eley, on Blue Creek, one and one quarter miles east of Salem. The farm originally belonged to Linza Okeley. The Riley's third son was born there on August 18, 1947. The Riley's sons grew up and married and established their own homes. On April 14, 1963, Steven married Pauline Louise Schwartz, daughter.... Hello: My name is Marlin Carr. My wife, Diana, is a descendant of Oliver Girod and his wife Rosina Baumgartner, through their son Henry, who married Sarah Laizure.

In 1981 (I know - some 25 years ago), she communicated with Ida Girod Riley via US mail. She is one in your Riley genealogy page, I believe. Ida gave some very valuable Girod family information to her and also mentioned a large genealogy book about the Girod family and, those in Ohio and Adams Co., IN. Also some talk about the Baumgartners. Ida wrote that the Girod book then would cost about $50.00.

We are wondering if you know of the book and if it is still available or where a copy might be.

Thank you,

Marlin Carr

Hello Kathleen: The Girod Book: I am absolutely now convinced that the "Girod Book" that Ida Girod Riley wrote about is really the "1979 History of Adams County, Indiana, Vol. 1", edited by Dick D. Heller.

There is one biographical article about Oliver Girod written by Daisie Girod Smith. There is much more information on Girod, Baumgartner, and other Swiss families.

There are two (2) volumes. Each cost $50.00. I bought Volume 1, it was the one most important to me. It can be purchased from the Heritage Room, Berne Public Library, Berne, Indiana.

Dear Kathleen,

I came across your Philbee Family History website while performing a Google Search for James Riley - the sea captain in your history who founded the town of Wilshire, Ohio in 1821. I wondered if you were aware that this is the very same James Riley who led a forlorn group of shipwrecked Americans on a torturous journey across the Sahara Desert where they were captured by the local tribes, treated as slaves, and suffered ignominious trials before a kindly Bedouin finally conducted

them to the city of Mogadore where they were bought from captivity by the British consul, William Willshire? It is one of the great stories of the early 19th century, and just last night was the subject of a 2-hour History Channel special (which was the first time I had ever heard the story!) It is said that Abraham Lincoln cited Riley’s account of the ordeal (which was a very popular book in that half-century) as one of his readings which were most influential in the formation of his beliefs regarding slavery. Therefore, we might deduce that sea captain James Riley of Wilshire, Ohio was indirectly one of the most influential Americans of the 19th century.

Just an FYI - tangential to your family history, but thought you would like to know.

Best wishes,

Larry A. Neel
