It appears that Aurie's Creek in Montgomery County, New York, on the Mohawk Flats across from the Lower Mohawk Village on the west side of Schoharie Creek was named after this man. Even in much later times it was recalled that the creek derived it's name from, The creek flows by a hill with a sharp perpendicular wall known as Caudaughrita. It appears that family derived its surname from the geographical circumstance of residing near this hill. Two separate accounts provided by Hill family members in the nineteenth century give this same story of how the surname came into being. This version gains support from eighteenth century record sources as diverse as the Papers of Sir William Johnson and the Jelles Fonda Account Books. Here Aaron is referred to as "of the hill" by Johnson in English, and as "van der barrick" by Fonda in Dutch. Both have exactly the same meaning. By the end of the eighteenth century the "of the" had been dropped, and the surname became simply "Hill". Peter and Mary Katehriunigh Hill had the following child:

    i. ELIZABETH5

was born about 02 Feb 1746.

    6. MARGARET KAYADONTYI4

    HILL (Aaron Oseraghete3, Cornelius Thannewanege

    2, Aurie

Kanaghowende1) was born about 1729 in Pr. Tiononderge, Lower Mohawk Village, New

York, USA. She died after 06 Jul 1789 in pr. Mohawk Village, Brant County, Ontario. Shemarried Nicholas Canadiorha Brant, son of Brant Canagaradunkwa and CatharinaTagganakwari about 1746. He was born about 1727 in Pr. Tiononderge, Lower MohawkVillage, New York, USA. He died between 08 Jun 1766-06 Nov 1768.

Notes for Margaret Kayadontyi Hill:Although the Johnson Papers make note that Nicholas was waiting for "his uncle White Hans"Johannes Crine Anequendahonji of the Astawenserontha Bear Clan, this is almost certain torefer to the uncle of his wife Margaret.

Notes for Nicholas Canadiorha Brant:The name appears to be Onondaga. In Evert Wendell's account book there is an entry for an

  • Generation 4 (con't)

Onondaga boy, Kanaedeijorhae. Nicholas's clan was Beaver (Draper Papers). This was triplechecked and so he was likely of Onondaga and or Huron ancestry (both have Beaver clans).John Norton reported in his diary that Joseph Brant's ancestors on both the mother and father'sside were Wyandot (Huron) captives adoped by the Mohawk. The Onondaga adopted manyHuron after the raids of the 1640s, as did the Mohawk. Joseph Brant's son Joseph also reportedthat his father's father was an Onondaga - although this may be the biological father Peter ratherthan the adoptive father Brant. Nicholas appears to have had ties at Schoharie (a verymulticultural settlement led by those from Caughnawaga and likely Huron) where he had one ofhis children baptised in 1758, and was also a sponsor for a child of his likely sibling in the sameyear, it being noted that Nicholas and Margaret were from Canajoharie.

A condolence ceremony was held at Ft. Stanwix 6 November 1768 during a time when most

Mohawks were in attendance. A black belt of wampum was given to "cover his grave"

(symbolically). It cannot be asserted that Nickus died there, however, since these ceremonies

tended to address these issues of mourning for chiefs who died since the last Council meeting.

It is possible that his children assumed the surname Brant or Claus (a contraction of Nicholas) or

Hill due to his wife or perhaps no surname (most Mohawk did not use surnames at this time).

Nicholas Canadiorha Brant and Margaret Kayadontyi Hill had the following children:

Kanaghowende1) was born about 18 May 1749 in Pr. Tiononderge, Lower Mohawk Village,

New York, USA. She died after 1817 in pr. Huron Reserve, Anderdon Township, Ontario,Canada. She married PAULUS SAHONWADI. He died about 1787 in pr. Mohawk Village, BrantCounty, Ontario, Canada. She married NICHOLAS COTTER.

    Notes for Paulus Sahonwadi:

In October 1775, Rev. John Stuart "reappointed" Paulus as reader at the Upper Castle,Canajoharie. On 10 October 1781 Daniel Claus reported that the buliding constructed in Montreal(Lachine) for Rev. Stuart to minister to the Mohawks then settled there, which "in Week daysserves for a School for their children, which is carefully attended by one Paulus Sahonwadi, aFort Hunter Indian who is very capable in that employ" as a schoomaster. On 7 August 1785Paulus Sa hon wa dy wrote a leter in Mohawk to Claus providing information of the situation atthe Grand River, where many wanted him to take up the work of teaching again. He added, "Inow have four children - two boys - and these are their names: Margaret, Paul, Peter and Mary."In 1780 Claus began a new version of the Mohawk Prayer Book which was published in 1787.Paulus Sahonwadi, the Mohawk sachem and schoolmaster was present to ensure the properbinding of the pages. Hence Paulus must have been in London in 1786, where the book waspublished, with Joseph Brant who was present to supervise the project. A plate from this book, published in Johnston's book (1964), shows a Mohawk schoolmaster with his pupils. This is likelyPaulus who is depicted. Paulus Sahonwadi was one of the Mohawk Chiefs who, on 26 February1787 signed the "Mohawk Deed" to the Nelles, Young, Huff and Dochstader families. This is thelast occasion when Paulus appears in any record, and so he presumably died soon thereafter.

Paulus Sahonwadi and Margaret Hill had the following children:

    i. MARGARET6

    PAULUS.

    26. ii. PETER PAULUS was born about 1778. He married CHRISTINA. She was born in 1781. She

Notes for Paulus Shagoyadiyostha / Karonghyontye:Paulus appears to have signed his first name on the 1789 deed from the Mohawks formerly ofCanajoharie, and someone added in Shagoyadiostha. This is a Astawenserontha Bear Clanname according the the Seth Newhouse Manuscript. Oddly, both he and his cousin Margaret Hillwho married Paulus Sahonwadi had male children of the same name and in the same order.Peter and Paul (Powless) who resided at or near the Mohawk Village.

It appears that Paulus inherited the "high status" name of his uncle David Hill, Karonghyontye,in 1790. He still used his original name in some deeds but in those available, from 1808 to1810 he used his inherited title. He disappears from the records at this time, and after 1812 hiscousin's son, Paul Powless, exchanged his given name of Onwaneharon for Karonghyontye.

    26. FRANCIS TAHATONNE6

    COTTER (Margaret5

    Hill, Mary Katehriunigh4

    Hill, Aaron Oseraghete3

    Hill,

    Cornelius Thannewanege2

    Hill, Aurie Kanaghowende1

Hill) was born about 1789 in pr.Mohawk Village, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. He died on 29 Sep 1852 in Wyandotte,Kansas. He married CATHARINE BROWN.

Notes for Francis Tahatonne Cotter:In 1815 there was a fourth Bear Clan / Tribe title and associated with the ancient sachemship,Astawenserontha, created perhaps at the beginning of the War of 1812 for reasons not stated in anyextant record. The title was Tahatonne and was held by Francis Cotter. In documents both before andafter, this name does not appear - except in the obituary of his apparent successor, Warner HenryNelles. In a petition sent to Indian Department officials 9 January 1814, the Six Nations Chiefs listedCotter as being among a group of Mohawks who acted in an "Unbecoming manner" by refusing tofight the enemies of the King, and so they recommended that he not receive any of "His Majesty'sbounty" - annuity payments. This appears to be part of an ongoing feud between the Lower Mohawksand Upper Mohawks. Cotter and 8 other Mohawk chiefs blamed this schism on the behavior of theLower Mohawks formerly of Fort Hunter, where members of the Upper Mohawks formerly ofCanajoharie "are treated like outcasts" (Indian Affairs, RG10 Series, Vol. 118, p. 169562, no date butbefore November 1818). Francis Cotter is thus an Upper Mohawk chief. Hence, as of about 1816,Cotter appears to have been "shunned", both by the factionalism within the Mohawk community andby his behavior during the War of 1812. Doubtless at some point Cotter would have been "dehorned"- his chiefship removed and given to a more suitable candidate from within the matrilineal family, either due to his behavior or his departure for the Detroit area. The evidence shows that on 17February 1816 Francis Cotter was still a "Principle Chief" when he signed a certificate (Archives ofOntario, Street Papers, MU2928) - it being noted with an asterix that he was among those still living14 April 1835. On 8 November 1843 Abraham Kennedy Smith of Brantford petitioned to have landshe possessed confirmed. On

13 April 1817 he had paid Margaret Cotter, mother of Chief Francis Cotter and Nicholas Cotter,Mohawks, for lands owned by the family. The chiefs in council validated the sale on 12 May1817, but none of the Cotters was then present suggesting that they had by then (i.e., April1817) moved (Indian Affairs, RG10 Series, Vol. 120, p. 4834). An Indian Department documentspecifically stated that sometime before 27 November 1818, Francis Cotter had "gone toDetroit", specifically the Wyandot settlement at Amherstberg, Anderdon Township where his sonNicholas, later counselor of the Nation to Washington in 1875, was born in 1822; later moving tothe Wyandott Purchase in Kansas where he died 29 September1852. It seems odd that hewould join the Wyandot Nation, unless he had connections there of some sort. According toPhillip Henhawk, Tahatonne may mean, "Hither He Grows".

In the Fall of 1830 a Wyandot named Soodenooks killed another man and was sentenced todeath but the vote of all eligible men of the tribe. Of the six members of the firing squad, one wasFrancis Cotter.

Francis Cotter Sr. was among those who removed from Upper Sandusky to Kansas in 1843. In

his household there were 2 over age 25 and 6 under age 25.

3 January 1848 William Walker signs the recommendation for F. Cotter to operate the

    Shawnee Ferry.

He died in what is today Kansas City in 1852 and was buried there in the Wyandotte Cemetery.

Francis Tahatonne Cotter and Catharine Brown had the following children:

ARMS. She was born in 1839 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. He married ELIZABETH. She

was born in 1824. She died about 1867.

iv. JOHN H. COTTER was born about 1825.

Notes for John H. Cotter:William Walker notes that on 8 June 1848 John Cotter was assaulted by MiltonKarraho and John Williams at the Upper Settlement. On the 16th the matter wasto be tried but none of the parties showed and the case was dismissed. 14 May1854, Walker wrote a long letter to John H. Cotter in California.

    v. AMOS COTTER was born in 1837. He died in 1870.

Notes for Amos Cotter:In 1864, Amos Cotter, a Wyandot, returns to Wyandotte (Kansas) after 3 years

service in the Union Army, only to find that his farm usurped by J.A. Bartles.

  • Generation 7 (con't)

Ontario. She died on 06 Oct 1892 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

Notes for Warner Henry Tahanata Nelles:Warner Henry seems to have had a bit of a checkered career, from an Indian chief, highly respectedmilitary officer, prominent figure in the social life of St. Catharines (see obituary below), to an accusedmurderer. With respect to the latter, despite the accolades noted below, it appears that in his earlierdays Warner H. became involved in at least one incidence of violence - in this case to the point wherehe killed a neighbour (who was also a cousin). In November of 1822 Warner and Peter Young went toa party at the home of John Young on the Grand River. They began to argue. A fight ensued, andWarner struck Young on the side of his head with an open hand - killing Young. From then until atleast January 1823 Warner was in Jail in Niagara awaiting trial - being eventually acquitted (NAC, RG1, E3, Vol. 56, pp. 116-121). He seems to have bounced back from this incident since he became aColonel in the militia (see below), and by 1846 a magistrate (St. Catharine's Public Library, NellesFile, Smith's Canadian Gazatter 1846).

During the 1881 census, Warner Henry (a Farmer), wife Sarah, and son Howard (a Surveyor),

all Methodists, were enumerated in Grantham, Lincoln County.

Warner Henry signed his will on 11 September 1896. The probate papers give his date of deathas 9 October 1896. Herein he mentions his daughter Charlotte Taylor, bequeathing to her all hiscash and monies owed, as well as all his personal effects. He directed his executors to sell 8acres off the southwest corner of his homestead farm being the south part of Lot 15, Concession4, Grantham Township - the entire lot being 30 acres. The rest of the property was to go to friendRobert Jones, with the provision that he pay legacies to Charlotte Taylor, and his fivegrandchildren - namely, Marion Nelles, Kate Nelles, Annie Beshgetoor the wife of Rev. HoraceBeshgetoor, John Lewis Taylor, and Gertrude Ball (AO, Lincoln County, Surrogate Register 10,No. 1866, p. 701).

    1896 OBITUARY:

    "Col. Nelles Buried.

Sketch of his long life - He was made the Chief of a tribe of Indians - His great physical powers.

St. Catharines, Ont., Oct. 12 (Special). Col. Warner Henry Nelles, who died here on Friday inhis 98th year, was buried to-day. there was a large attendance at the service. The following is a short sketch of his career;-

In 1776 before the war of Independence, Henry William Nelles son of old Hendrick Nelles, thefirst of that name who came to America, feeling his German heart would not allow him to take uparms against Great britain decided to go to Canada and make a home for himself and family.

Accordingly, he, with his sons Robert, William, John, Warner, Abram, and Peter with five slaves, started in canoes, via the Mohawk River to Fort Plain. From there, they passed over the portagefrom wood Creek, and on into Oneida. Later, from there they commenced that long and arduousjourney by the Oswego River to Fort Oswego, and up Lake Ontario to the Niagara River, wherethey landed. They tested the soil here, and finally pushed on to Grimsby, the father saying to hissons "Here we shall make our home". After peace was declared the American Governmentoffered them their land back if they would return to the United States. All except Peter remainedin Canada. His heart yearned for his old home, so, leaving friends and kindred he returned andclaimed the lands left by his father and Mother, The old Palatine Church in New York State, whichstill stands until this day, was built on land given by Hendrick William Nelles.

The subject of ths sketch, colonel Warner Henry Nelles of Grantham, who passed away onFriday morning at the advanced age of 97 years and 5 months, was a great-grandson of theabove named Hendrick William Nelles. The deceased was born in Haldimand County, May 2nd,1799. He was educated at Grimsby by the Rev, Mr. Fell, took his first commission as a lieutenantof the First Regiment of Haldimand Militia in 1822 which commission was signed by Sir PeregrineMaitland. He was made captain of the First Regiment of Light Infantry, a company he raised intwo days in 1838. His commission was signed by Sir George Arthur. His last commission asLieutenant - Colonel was signed by Sir Edmund W. Head in 1859.

  • Generation 7 (con't)

His popularity as a young man may be judged when, being only seventeen, he was made achief of a tribe of Indians called the Beavers. Upon the death of the old chief, they saluted him asTahanata, and the chain of wampum they threw over his head is still in the family. Up to the endof his death he was still recognized as chief, though the tribe is greatly scattered. He was marriedat York in 1825 to Sarah Uhlein and they enjoyed sixty eight years of a happy life together, hispartner passing away about four years ago. He leaves one daughter only, Mrs. Taylor, andseveral grand-children: two of whom reside on Chestnut Street in this City, the Misses Nelles;Mrs. P.S. Ball, Niagara-on-the-Lake; and Mr. J. Lewis Taylor, of Santa Barbara, California.

To show the great physical powers of Col. Nelles, sone six or seven years ago, when the colonel

was more than 90 years of age, he walked from his home, near St. Catharines to Niagara-on-the-

Lake, a distance of more than eleven miles to visit an old friend, the late Mr. Alma."

It appears that the informant for the information that appears in the obituary made a couple ofmistakes. On 22 February 1815 George Martin, a Mohawk chief, wrote a list of all the Principle(hereditary sachems) and War chiefs for each of the three Mohawk Tribes (clans). In every listbefore and after there have been three sachems for each clan, relating to the principle families. Here there is a number four sachem linked with a bracket to Astawenserontha (the Hill familylineage). So after 3. John Johnson Astawenserontha is 4. Francis Cotter Tahatonne. It appearsthat around the time of the War of 1812, in addition to 5 war chiefs, there were 4 hereditarysachems for the Bear Tribe. The obituary informat(s) gave the Tribe as Beaver (it was Bear) andthe sachemship as Tahanata (it was Tahatonne). The latter was a simple switch of the last twosyllables. None of the children of Nelles grew up on the Grand River so it is debatable how muchthey knew about their father's Native heritage. The Cotter family left the Grand River about 1816to reside among the Wyandot of Amherstburg, thereby opening up the sachemship. Reg Henrytranslated Tahatonne / Tahanata as, "He is puting pine trees between". It appears to beequivalent to the man's name in the Akwesasne Mohawk dialect, Tehanetorens, "He walksthrough the pines". A modern interpretation is probably "Between the pine trees". However PhillipHenhawk sees them as two different names. Tahanata means "Towards his Village", and"Tahatonne" means "Hither he Grows".
