the world’s finest pencils

our heritageIn Borrowdale, under the roots of an upturned tree,

shepherds first discovered graphite. At first they

used it for marking their sheep

but 300 years later pencil

making in Cumbria

was thriving as a

cottage industry.

The Cumberland Pencil Company created its first

pencil in Keswick in 1832 and the first Derwent fine

art colour pencil was introduced in 1938.

are, naturally, closely entwined. The Cumberland

Pencil Museum in Keswick

is a fascinating journey

through our unique

history and the history

of pencil making.

It has recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary

and is one of the most popular tourist attractions

in the Lake District.

our environmentOur factory is located in one of the most beautiful

parts of England and using pencils is a very natural

art-form, so we are doing all we can to minimise

our impact on the environment. We have reduced

our energy consumption, we recycle our sawdust

and we are using sustainable resources wherever

possible. Also, we have been awarded the Queen’s

Award for Enterprise for our unique solvent-free

paint application system which has greatly

improved the air quality.

For the background I masked out the

bamboo and cranes then selected

the colours I wanted and, with a

pencil and brush mixed the colours

in a saucer.

I then sprayed the paper with water

and poured the colour over the

sprayed paper creating a lovely run

of colours.

Aquatone range features

Paint in a stickWatercolour pencils are amazingly versatile and Aquatone

offers four times more useable material than a wood cased

pencil. This solid stick of pure, water-soluble colour can be

used wet or dry, and you can apply broad sweeps of colour in

seconds. For even faster colour lay down, simply peel off the

protective wrapper and apply Aquatone on its side. Aquatone

Derwent Artists Pencils have an

excellent range of colours. They’re

particularly suitable for landscape

drawings and can be mixed optically

to create beautiful coloured greys.

They also work well when I create

texture in my drawings through

repeated layering and lifting

of colour.

The colour on the bract of the

Strelitzia is very complex and dense

and requires a lot of subtle blending

to reproduce. The Studio pencils

ability to mix subtle shades

and to sharpen to a fine point for

detail was ideal.

Coloursoft suit my style perfectly.

They meet my need for intense

colour that goes onto the paper

faster than other harder pencils with

excellent colour saturation.

I built up the intense colours using

many layers, light to dark, and then

burnished them which adds a glow.

Derwent’s new Pastel Pencils are a

major improvement on their previous

range. The same intense, vivid

pigments have been retained, with a

much improved binding agent that

allows multiple layering, including

adding darker layers over light ones.

These new and unique pastel pencils

also allow me to produce finer, more

detailed drawings than with any

other pastel pencils I have tried.

Black graphite pencils ideal for dark sketchesDerwent Onyx is made from smooth, dark

graphite and delivers dense, rich, jet- black

tones, darker than a Graphic 9B. Due to its

non-crumbly texture, the 4mm wide core

WaterbrushThe Waterbrush is an artist’s

dream. The brush houses water

in the barrel of the pen which

is supplied to the fibre brush

via a valve. The flow of water is

controlled by slight pressure on

the barrel when the brush meets

paper. For wet on wet techniques

just squeeze the barrel of the

pen lightly, and to clean it simply

apply pressure to the barrel and

the dirty water will work its way

out of the brush. Available with a

medium or small brush head.

BlenderIf you want to create a subtle

blend of colours then the

Derwent Blender is the ideal

accessory. The Blender pencil is a

soft colourless pencil made from

the binder used for coloured

pencils. It allows you to blend

two or more colours together

to create a new colour. At the

and smoothes the colours so

individual strokes and hard edges

BurnisherThe Derwent Burnisher is a hard

colourless pencil which when

used over layers of pigment

provides a rich polished finish.

Burnishing pushes the pigment

into the paper and leaves a well

blended, photo like finish. By

sealing the image with a heavy

layer of colourless wax it gives

the image a polished or reflective

look and makes the colours
