    DERRY INCORPORATED 1827

Derry was settled in 1719 by agroup of 16 Presbyterian fami-lies who fled Northern Ireland.

When the families arrived inBoston, they were not welcomedby the Colonists. They were, how-ever, granted land in what wasthen the northern wilderness.

In 1722, the town was incor-porated under the name of Lon-donderry. It covered what is nowWindham, Derry, Londonderryand parts of surrounding towns.Gradually the towns separated. In 1827 Derry was incorporatedunder its current name.

Derry has grown rapidlysince the 1963 with the openingof I-93, which links the townto Boston and Northern NewHampshire.

Derry has more than 33,000residents, five times the num-ber who lived there before thehighway opened. The town nowhouses many apartment unitsand industrial parks, which sup-port the booming population.

Derry offers many activitiesto residents, with an active Rec-reation Department and severalparks and playgrounds.

    Robert Frost, the celebrated

American poet, lived with hisfamily in Derry from 1900 to1911. The Robert Frost Farm is

a National Historical Landmarkthat is open to the public. Thefarm offers tours, displays and

readings that educate the publicabout Frost, his poetry and lifein Derry.

    WHERE WE LIVE2

    LONDONDERRY INCORPORATED 1722

Londonderry gets its namefrom the hometown of theIrish-Scottish settlers whofirst established the townin the 18th century. Manyof these settlers left homesin Londonderry, Ireland. Sowhen they enacted a new towncharter on June 21, 1722, theynamed their new home afterthe old.

Originally the town includedparts of Manchester, Hudson,Windham, Salem and Derry. However, over time many ofthese areas were claimedby other towns, leaving Lon-donderry with 42 square milesof its own.

During the late 1700s, Lon-donderry became known forthe linen that was produced intown. George Washington and

Thomas Jefferson are reputedto have worn LondonderryLinen, which was touted as thebest in New England.

The linen was so popularthat many people claimed theirproduct was LondonderryLinen. To combat this, theHouse of Representativespassed legislation saying thatall linen manufactured in Lon-donderry must have a seal toshow its authenticity.

Today, Londonderry is hometo more than 24,000 residents. Many people live in the south-eastern part of town, which isnear I-93 and N.H. Route 102.Businesses are concentratedin this area, or in the northernpart of town, which houses theManchester-Boston RegionalAirport.

    PELHAM INCORPORATED 1746

Although Pelham is a small town, itboasts something no other local town does:a full 18-hole disc golf course. This uniquesport follows the same idea as golf; getthrough the course with a few points aspossible. But instead of hitting a ball, discgolf players toss a disc (like a Frisbee) intoa basket.

The course is part of Muldoon Park, thelargest recreational area in Pelham. Thepark also offers venues for more conven-tional sports, including baseball and soc-cer, in addition to hiking trails. Some of thetrails lead to Beaver Brook, a small riverwhere residents can launch a canoe.

Pelham boarders Massachusetts andcontains the southern-most point in NewHampshire.

The town is home to about 13,000 resi-dents. It has its own school system, whichconsists of a preschool, elementary, middleand high school.
