description

The Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS) is an exciting new development, inspired by London 2012 and unique to Derbyshire. Its purpose is: "To provide high quality support to Derbyshire’s emerging talented sports performers, enabling them to achieve greater national and international success and in so doing, to enhance the reputation of Derby and Derbyshire." The Derbyshire Institute of Sport has been designed to help support this potential, to leave less to chance and to develop a conveyor belt of success in those sports which have a strong base in Derbyshire. The three principal funding partners of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport are Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council and the University of Derby.

for England Hockey, GB Weightlifting and GB Wheelchair Tennis, and was

the Venue Medical Manager for the North Greenwich Arena (O2) for the

2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

• Former international badminton player Donna Kellogg, who represented

Great Britain at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics, appointed to develop

the Team Derby Performance Programme. Donna will mentor students who

are awarded scholarships through the performance programme and ensure

close links with the DIS.

• DIS lead coaches have been appointed in basketball, badminton, golf,

hockey, table tennis and swimming and they are all working with athletes in

these sports on a weekly basis. The basketball and table tennis coaches

are joint appointments with the University of Derby.

• Three strength and conditioning coaches have been appointed - Luke

Storey, Paul Joyce and Spence Brown. Two associates, Tim Lawrenson and

Donna Kellogg, have also been appointed and they are now each working on

a regular basis with squads and athletes.

• Three physiotherapists, Jenny Knibbs, Carl Butler and Rachel Royer, have

been appointed to provide physiotherapy services to DIS athletes.

• 76 athletes from 12 sports are now members of the DIS and are receiving

coaching and sports science/medical services on a regular basis. Some

noticeable performance improvements have already been seen.

• To date more than 60 athletes have started appropriate and

professionally-led strength and conditioning programmes - which they

would not have had access to without the support of the DIS – and more

than 500 hours of S&C coaching has already been delivered.

• A medical support programme has been established, allowing athletes to

receive high quality support with initial assessment and treatment usually

within 24 hours.

• A voucher system has been set up to allow athletes to access free

physiotherapy sessions on a needs-led basis. Each athlete may access up

to ten sessions. To date around 70 hours of physiotherapy have been

delivered to athletes.

• A monthly DIS Coach Forum has been established to allow lead coaches to

share information and best practice. The coaches are also now regularly

attending CPD opportunities together.

• Hub sites have been established at the University of Derby and Brampton

Manor. The delivery of strength and conditioning and medical support

services are being coordinated through these two sites.

Andi Manley – Swimming

Performance Coach

Andi Manley, head coach of Derbyshire’s

performance squad Derventio eXcel, is the

Swimming Performance Coach for the

Derbyshire Institute of Sport, leading its

swimming programme. Andi, who joined

Derventio eXcel in 2009 and is also involved as

a coach in the GB Junior International

Programme, is working to improve the

performance of Derbyshire’s emerging

swimmers.

Andi said: “The support DIS has provided our

programme is fantastic and has come at such an

important time for Derventio eXcel and the

swimmers of Derbyshire. There has been an

impact on so many levels - the facility provision

in pools at Moorways, Etwall, Ripley and

Matlock has been fundamental to ensuring we

can provide the correct training programme for

all our athletes.

“There has been a clear coach and athlete

education programme which is already reaping

rewards both in and out of the water. Lastly the

sports science and sports medicine support is a

resource that ensures the swimmers are the

most ‘athletic’ I have ever seen them and are

given physio and rehabilitation support by a

team that we know and that understand the

demands of our sport. ”

“We have seen results already in the short

term but more importantly are laying the

foundations for continued national and

international success for many seasons to

come. As a total package, DIS has made a

huge impact to Derventio and has given us

long term stability and support.”

• Eleven swimmers have been selected for the England Talent Squads:

Elle Pryce, Imogen Clark, Abbie Wood, Jamie Ingram, Oliver

Davidson, Imogen Morris, Kevin Wallbank, Ben Goodall, Sarah Vasey,

Coach for the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, leading its badminton programme.

James, who is now one of the England Junior Coaches, is working to improve the

performance of Derbyshire’s emerging badminton players. James is also Head Coach

of the Derbyshire Badminton Performance Centre, a Derbyshire Junior County

Coach and National Talent Coach. He is a former Junior International and was a

European Junior U19 medallist and National Junior Doubles and Mixed champion,

and also competed on the many Major Senior International Tournaments such as All

Josh Hong – Reached the quarter final in the singles at the Cardiff U17 gold

tournament.

Grace King - Represented England in Denmark. Played a crucial role in the

team which won a bronze medal in the team event.

Grace King and Tiara Samuel

James said: “So far the DIS programme has had a major impact on my players. They have become far more

professional and it has inspired them to push themselves even harder to try to become the best player they

can be. I have seen huge all round improvements.

“Players are much more responsible for their training and much more professional. They also have increased

their work rate as they know how lucky they are to have this opportunity. The results will keep getting

better but the main thing I've noticed is how much closer we are getting to those players above us and some

of the players are starting to establish themselves as in the top group in their age. ”

Basketball

James Maudsley - Basketball

Performance Coach

James Maudsley is the Basketball

Performance Coach for the Derbyshire

Institute of Sport , leading its basketball

programmes and the University of Derby

Men’s Basketball club.

James, who led the Derby Trailblazers to win

the EBL Men's National Trophy as Head Coach

earlier this year and spent two years working

with the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball

team, is working to improve the performance

of Derbyshire’s emerging basketball players.

James’ role includes establishing a process for

identifying, developing and monitoring

talented players, working with GB coaches to

nominate potential GB players, and supporting

selected basketball players within the DIS

with a strength and conditioning programme.

James also organises and delivers coaching to

the University of Derby Men’s Basketball

Team, with the aim of improving performances

and results in BUCS competitions.

James said: “I’m delighted to be part of the

Derbyshire Institute of Sport. We have a

number of talented players for the Derby

Trailblazers who can only benefit from the

support which the DIS offers. We have seen

many of our most gifted players offered

scholarships at universities in America in the

past few years, meaning Derbyshire is losing

some of its talent, but with the additional

support to them from the DIS and the

partnership with the University of Derby and

hopefully they will see that America isn’t the

only option.”

Derby Trailblazers welcome new player

from America thanks to partnership

with University of Derby and DIS

The Derby Trailblazers basketball team has welcomed a new player

from America, thanks to its partnership with the University of Derby

and the Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS).

Nick Rose has joined the team from Colorado, USA, on a partially-

funded scholarship programme with the University of Derby. Nick

will play a season for the Derby Trailblazers while at the university

and will also play for the university's Team Derby Basketball team.

Nick was a Division Three All American at Colorado College, and

was a major contributor that completely transformed the

programme from a team that struggled to win a game to a team

which beat the Division One Air Force Falcons.

During his time playing for the Derby Trailblazers and the Team

Derby basketball team Nick will be supported by the DIS, which

provides athletes with access to high quality strength and

conditioning, sports science and sports medicine services within

Derbyshire. He will be coached by James Maudsley, who is the

Basketball Performance Coach for the DIS, Head Coach at Derby

Trailblazers and coaches Team Derby Basketball.

Also joining the University of Derby programme will be two players

from the Derby Trailblazers U19 National Colleges Championship

winning team, Benson Arogbo and Tom Brown. Both players have

been involved with the Division One programme at the Trailblazers

and will continue to develop at university and National League level.

The vision is to continue to develop the link between Trailblazers

Academy based at Derby College and Noel Baker School, and the

University of Derby. The goal is to see more players progress from

the junior age groups at the Trailblazers through the academy and

then remain in Derby and study at the University of Derby.

Derby Trailblazers player Rema Lascelles has already been reaping

the benefits of the support which the Derbyshire Institute of Sport

provides, having received some vital physiotherapy support. With

only a few weeks of the 2011/2012 season remaining, Rema suffered

a potential season ending ankle injury. But thanks to physiotherapy

support from Carl Butler and his team, Rema was able to play a part in

the Final Fours where the team finished as runners up, and went on to

be selected for the U20 GB Mens squad for the European

Championships. Rema has been with the Trailblazers programme from

Mini's (U12) right the way through to being the starting point guard

for the National Trophy winning team. 6

winning a bronze medal in 1998, is working alongside current hockey coaches at

club and regional and national level to help further develop the most talented

junior players in Derbyshire.

He is also working with coaches in the county to identify a performance level

group of players to receive additional targeted support, and is providing

additional “hands on” coaching to the performance group to develop their

technical and tactical skills.

Duncan said: “I’m really excited to be part of the Derbyshire Institute

of Sport. A number of Derbyshire players are currently playing for

England or Great Britain at age group level and I will be working

closely with other coaches in Derbyshire to ensure that those

players can reach the next level.”8

Steve, who is also Head Coach for Derbyshire (DUGC) Boys and Lead Coach for

the Derby College Performance Golf Programme, will work alongside current

coaches at club, regional and national level to help further develop the most

talented young players in Derbyshire.

The part-time role will include identifying a performance level group of players

to receive additional targeted support from the DIS and developing a system

within the county to increase the regular coaching, guided practice and

competition support to these players.

Steve, (37), will also work with other coaches in Derbyshire who are producing

talented players to establish a group of coaches driving golf performance, as

well as developing links with colleges and University of Derby to strengthen

their golf clubs and programmes. Steve, from Derby, is also Head of Instruction

at Lee Westwood Golf Academy and received the Derbyshire PGA Professional

of the Year Award 2012.

Individual Athletes

The Derbyshire Institute of Sport is also currently supporting

a number of individual athletes:

Caroline Povey – Olympic Trap Shooting

Caroline represented Great Britain at the World Cup in Tucson, Arizona

earlier this year. She was part of a team of three women and three men to

be selected, and finished in a World Cup career high of 9th place and as the

top British competitor.

Caroline said: “Competing against the best shooters in the world, many of

whom would compete in London 2012 was a fantastic experience and I

hope to be selected to represent Great Britain again during 2013.”

Ellie Koyander – Skiing

Ellie competes on the FIS World Cup circuit for freestyle moguls skiing.

This year she achieved a Top 20 World Cup finish and she is ranked No.30

in the world. Ellie competed at the Winter Olympics in 2010, becoming the

youngest female member of Team GB, and she is now aiming to be a medal

contender at the next winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.

James Machon – Skiing

Derbyshire freestyle skier James Machon is half way to qualifying for the

Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics after taking 20th place at the FIS World Cup

in New Zealand. 21-year-old James, from Bamford, competed at the first

Olympic qualifying event for ski halfpipe at Cardrona in New Zealand, and

did enough to keep him on course on his journey to the Winter Games

despite injury.

James said: “The BOA qualifying criteria is 2 x Top 20 results in World

Cups and I came 20th in the first one which was the result I needed as

part of the qualification process for Sochi 2014, so I'm really pleased.

The week before the competition I was learning a double flip and had a

crash, which bruised my sacrum bone and a ligament in the gluteus

maximus. I was able to ski through the pain and secure 20th place, and

after needing a top 20 result as part of the qualification process I’m

relieved the tactics of a conservative run paid off, and every bit of

training over the last five months has been worthwhile.”

There are six more qualifiers between now and the Olympics, with the next

qualifier in Park City, Utah, in December.

Hannah Jones - Snooker

This year Hannah has won the World Ladies U40 Northern Snooker Shield,

the World Ladies Northern Snooker Plate, the World Ladies British Open U

40 Shield, the EABA U19 Ladies Championship and the Derbyshire Ladies

Snooker Championship. Hannah was also placed third at the European

Team Championship and was a semi-finalist at the European Ladies

Snooker Championship.

Plans to further develop

‘hub’ sites after busy first

six months

The first two ‘hub’ sites for the DIS at the University of Derby and

Brampton Manor have enjoyed a busy first six months since the

official launch of the DIS, and plans are also in place to further

develop services offered at both sites.

The University of Derby has recently begun work to refurbish an

existing building to create a high performance strength and

conditioning facility, which will provide a base for DIS athletes as

well as a unique opportunity for athletes on the University of

Derby’s new Performance Programme.

Meanwhile at Brampton Manor in Chesterfield, DIS athletes who

use the facility are given free membership and the DIS is given free

use of the facility for strength and conditioning specific

workshops.

Brampton Manor also recently held a fundraising event to support

DIS athletes. Staff at the gym at Brampton Manor have also been

offered free CPD to enable them to provide strength and

conditioning support to DIS athletes outside of programmed

session times.

The facility management team are also currently analysing the

potential to develop its training environments to become more

performance related. Additional ‘hub’ sites are also being

explored, to allow for a more local approach. Discussions are

currently being held with the University of Derby’s Buxton campus,

John Port School in Etwall and Derby College.

A physiotherapy suite is also being developed at the university to provide standard access times

for when DIS athletes can receive treatment and advice.

Physiotherapy

The demand for physiotherapy treatment throughout the

summer has been very variable across sports, mainly due to

the fact that some sports and athletes have been

undertaking much more intensive phases of training than

others.

But as coaches and athletes are becoming more aware of the

physiotherapy services available more are making use of them. A

physiotherapy base has recently been established in a medical room

within the Medical Suite at the University of Derby. Appointments are

currently available three evenings per week, and there is potential to

extend working hours if demand increases. This site provides a

temporary physiotherapy facility until such a time as the proposed DIS

hub site - that will house a gym, medical area and offices - becomes

available.

If any athlete who is supported by the DIS sustains an injury, their coach can refer them to the clinic for a physiotherapy

opinion. The physiotherapist will then assess the injury and will either advise the athlete how to self-manage the

problem or the required number of treatment sessions to resolve the problem will be provided. If the injury is

significant, the DIS physiotherapy team can advise on an appropriate specialist referral.

A voucher system for physiotherapy access has

been introduced. Vouchers will be distributed to the

coaches to make it easier for them to

manage physiotherapy referrals.

Carl Butler and Rachel Royer are the two physiotherapists who are leading on treatment delivery and they have also

started to implement a screening programme for all DIS athletes. All athletes will be invited to attend for a musculo-

skeletal profiling assessment that will allow potential issues such as poor posture, reduced flexibility, muscle

imbalances or other anomalies to be identified.

If anything that could lead to injury or performance problems is found, athletes will be told and

provided with a corrective exercise programme.

The physiotherapy team will also liaise with the S&C coaches so that the teams can work together to supervise and

progress the athletes pre-habilitation programme with the aim of reducing the risk of injury and contributing to the

enhancement of sporting performance.

GB wrestling, GB boxing and a host of professional

boxers, as well as GB Canoeing and triathletes.

Freddy specialises in performance nutrition – supporting

the specific demands of certain sports.

DIS awarded £9,500 grant for

performance analysis

equipment

Sport England has awarded the DIS a grant of

£9,500 which will be used to purchase a range of

performance analysis equipment. This will include

ipads, an underwater camera, Dartfish software and

FlightScope, a portable indoor-outdoor ball-flight

and launch monitor. The equipment will allow the

performances of DIS athletes to be tracked and

analysed, providing objective feedback which will be

used to help improve performance.

Swimmers turn to gymnastics

Swimmers from Derventio eXcel have begun

gymnastics training through the DIS. This land-

based training with a specialist coach is designed to

increase the depth of strength and flexibility of

individual swimmers.

Talks take place to build

Academy programme for DIS

sports

Further talks have taken place to build the Academy

programme for DIS sports.

Basketball has operated an Academy run by Derby

College and Noel Baker School for a number of

years, linked to the Derby Trailblazers basketball

club. The goal is to see more players progress from

the junior age groups at the Trailblazers through the

Academy and then remain in Derby and study at the

University of Derby.

A Netball Academy will start at Derby College in

September 2013, operating in a similar way, and

opportunities to create academies in other sports

such as table tennis and badminton are being

explored.
