This spring we open a new permanent gallery - noti ce nature, feel joy. This is the fruit of a year long programme in which we have asked Derby people, volunteers, academics and specialists to explore their natural world inspired by our natural history collecti ons. Hundreds of people parti cipated and together we have produced a gallery of marvel and wonder.

We are also bringing a beauti ful collecti on of decorati ve arts via The Craft s Council for the temporary exhibiti on Bud to Bloom. This show illustrates how the natural world inspires modern arti st and makers. There will be some fascinati ng events and acti viti es to accompany the exhibiti on including Nature Bites, a series of expert talks and live taxidermy event as part of the Museums at Night celebrati ons.

We conti nue to expand perspecti ves of what a museum could be by hosti ng TEDx Derby on Saturday 18 April at The Silk Mill. Here a series of speakers will talk about how they have used creati vity and a sideways view of the world to promote social change.

In June, along with many venues across the city, we will be hosti ng events for the fi rst Derby Book Festi val. This includes a lecture by renowned railway writer Nigel Lowey at The Silk Mill in the shadow of the much loved Derby Midland Model Railway.

The proposed funding reducti ons to Derby Museums Trust of 26% announce last December will now be phased over two years. This is good news as it gives the museums opportunity to raise additi onal income to become more fi nancially resilient. Pickford’s House will now remain open although the cuts mean it will close on Sundays. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last few months. It’s very clear that Derby Museums matt er.

Common Treasury

9 May - 21 JuneFREE

When it opened in 1879, Derby Museum was the culminati on of many years of planning and thought. Many of the objects that the people of Derby know and love were part of the founding collecti ons. The collecti on now contains thousands of items assembled in many cases through the generosity of Derby’s people. This exhibiti on describes how Derby’s collecti ons have grown over 150 years. It will also explore how the museum has perceived its role in the city and more importantly what the public has expected of it.

Common Treasury will ask questi ons of the purpose of a public museum. How can the past inform decisions as we collect material culture for the future? Derby has changed since the museum opened. How important is a freely accessible public space where everyone can learn about their place in the world?

EXHIBITIONSMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

Bud to Bloom

25 April - 14 JuneFREE

In celebrati on of the opening of our new gallery ‘noti ce nature feel joy’ we are excited to be able to bring to Derby work selected from the Craft s Council Collecti on inspired by the natural world and life-cycle of plants.

Ever since people fi rst started to decorate objects they have taken inspirati on from nature. We see wonderful examples of this in our collecti ons of Derby Porcelain in the Coff ee House.Plants, fl owers and fruit have infl uenced the forms and patt erning of these objects, as well as the selecti on of materials and the way they are made.

All of these works have been made by UK makers in the last 40 years. The exhibiti on includes leading UK glassmakers Angela Jarman and Neil Wilkin, texti le arti st Michael Brennand-Wood, designer Tord Boontje, silversmiths David Clarke and Junko Mori, and ceramicists Felicity Aylieff , Mary Rogers and Richard Slee.

John StobartAn Artistic Journey from Derby across the Atlantic

26 June - 6 September FREE

From his earliest beginnings as a student at Derby College of Arts and Craft s, John Stobart has always used paint to depict the people in the landscapes that he sees around him. Taking inspirati on as a young arti st from Joseph Wright of Derby’s work, he has become one of the best-known North American mariti me painters.

Over the last 60 years he has produced more than 600 painti ngs, a special selecti on of which can be seen in this retrospecti ve of his life’s work. This is the fi rst major exhibiti on of his work to be seen in the city where he fi rst trained and which was such a great inspirati on for his early work.

Crawling, jumping, swimming and fl utt ering… our natural history collecti on has found its way to its new home. Nestled in the heart of the museum, the new nature gallery profi les some of the amazing specimens from our collecti on. This fl exible display is open, playful, experimental and emoti ve and explores the themes and stories that you suggested from the start.

We’ve worked with visitors, friends, supporters and partners to co-produce the gallery and help us to share our collecti on in new and interesti ng ways. Our aim is for the gallery to act as a sti mulus, to excite and inspire you to take noti ce of your ‘own natural world’. We hope you will leave the gallery full of inspirati on and ideas with a desire to appreciate, take care of, learn about and respond to the natural world around you.

The gallery is a platf orm for three interventi onal commissions; a contemporary taxidermy response to the historic bird collecti on by Jazmine Miles-Long, a delicate silver insect by Justi n Gilday and an evocati ve soundscape by Richard Birkin.

Over the coming months, as we play and experiment with the possibiliti es for the new gallery, we’d love to see your nature drawings, photographs, facts and anecdotes.

STEAM MAKERS IN RESIDENCETHE SILK MILL

The Silk Mill is undergoing a transformati onal programme that explores themes of ‘making and social history’, drawn from Derby and the Derwent Valleys’ unique and on-going heritage stories. These acti viti es take place in the refurbished ground fl oor of the building and are directly informing our plans for the full redevelopment of the site as a Museum of Making, over the coming 5 years.

To ensure our developments are both relevant and resilient, we work together with our audiences, volunteers and specialists to develop our spaces and programmes. Our ‘Makers-in-Residence’ are an important part of this approach - with practi ti oners drawn from fi elds including art, architecture, design, science, and technology.

Our most recent residencies are part of our growing ‘Insti tute of STEAM’ and have focused on exploring the themes and concepts across the fi elds of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths to develop our ideas around how creati vity is integral to innovati on and making.

The residencies have explored the co-producti on of experiences of making for our audiences, inspired by the culture of making past, present and future. Our makers have been developing and testi ng their ideas, exploring spaces and collecti ons, whilst also informing their own creati ve practi ces.
