ORANGE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL - POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: DEPUTY PRINCIPAL CLASSIFICATION LEVEL: SENIOR EXECUTIVE LEVEL FULL TIME / PART TIME: FULL TIME REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL The core purpose of the Deputy’s position at Orange Christian School is to support the Principal, contribute to the Executive Leadership Team and ensure the efficient day-to-day organisation of the School.

Appointment • The Deputy Principal is appointed by the Board • The Deputy Principal is a senior position within the management structure of the

School • The appointee will be expected to work in consultation with the Executive Leadership

Team • All members of the Executive Leadership Team report to the Principal directly and

through regular meetings • The Deputy Principal will act for the Principal when the Principal is absent from the

School

Spiritual Leadership Requirements

• To show godly leadership to the staff, expressing an outworking of a personal faith in all interactions and management tasks.

• To possess a passion for Christ and a desire to live a life of integrity; a growing Christian who is wholeheartedly seeking a relationship with Christ.

Educational Leadership

• Lead the Junior, Middle and Senior school coordinators in the provision of Christ-centred, visionary, and dynamic educational leadership in learning and teaching.

• Lead staff in Christian Education and oversee the professional development of staff to continually provide best practice in learning and teaching across the whole school, consistent with the school’s Strategic Plan, Vision and Mission.

• Attend Executive meetings and ensure high levels of confidentiality are maintained • Enunciate the school culture

• Bring recommendations re Administration, Curriculum, Student Welfare and Staff Welfare and school tone to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to ensure smooth operation of the school

• Deputise for the Principal as necessary in meetings/interviews and represent the School at various functions

• Assist in the development and review of School Policies/Procedures ensuring they meet all legislative and regulatory requirements

• Ensure School Policies/Procedures are carried out • Liaise with Principal and Business Manager on building developments and strategic

planning • Lead and speak at public events as required • Ensure Reporting Processes are in place • Oversight of Student Welfare in conjunction with Section Coordinators, School

Chaplain, and parents, as needed • Maintain good communications with Executive, students, and teachers • Take preventative measures, discussing potential problems with teachers, students,

and parents • Take necessary action as required in a crisis to maintain the safety of students • Undertake negotiation and mediation both with groups and individuals • Participate in School Budget process

While the Deputy Principal has oversight of both Curriculum and School Organisation, the successful candidate will have more direct implementation of one focus area, and will supervise other Executive staff for the alternative focus area, depending on the skills set of the successful applicant:

Focus Area One: Teaching & Learning

• Oversee the professional development of staff whilst leading and inspiring commitment and enthusiasm among all teaching staff in developing a genuine Prep – Year 12 professional learning community, dedicated to excellent Christian education.

• Implement and evaluate policies, processes and practices in areas that are relevant to learning and teaching, such as assessment and reporting.

• Knowledge of the Australian and NSW Curriculum from Kinder – Year 12 and provide effective leadership and guidance to staff in curriculum development and the implementation of the Australian and NSW Curriculum with a Biblical worldview.

• Maintain knowledge and understanding of contemporary education issues and their implications for learning and teaching at Orange Christian School.

• Lead the School to deliver best practice in learning and teaching pedagogy. • Write reports on the progress of learning and teaching at the School for the Principal,

School Board, Newsletter, School Magazine, Annual Report and School Website. • Identify, plan, and lead appropriate staff professional development

workshops/programs in Christian Education and teaching pedagogies that support and enhance student learning in liaison with other curriculum leaders and Section Coordinators.

• Be a visible presence in and around classrooms, modelling and assisting staff with curriculum implementation and best practice of teaching and learning methods.

Alternative Focus Area Two: School Organisation

• Assist the Section Coordinators to ensure the smooth running of the school • Organise playground duty/whole school rosters/class timetables • Oversee employment of relief teachers, extras, etc. • Liaising with the Principal for the allocation of classes and duties in preparation for

timetabling. • Supervision of the timetabling process • Be responsible for day to day organisation in the school including approval of

variations to routine – to come through the Section Heads • Oversee organisation of Parent/Teacher interviews, orientation, and information

nights, in consultation with other Executive staff • Lead and direct staff to comply with all Government legislation, NESA requirements

and regulations and School polices in regard to learning and teaching. • Analyse relevant student performance data (NAPLAN, HSC results, National

Competitions) to raise student achievement levels and strengthen identified areas of learning and teaching.

• Inform and educate the School community (Parent/Staff/Board) about current learning and teaching initiatives, results in national academic competitions, NAPLAN and HSC results.

• Conduct annual review of Staff and Student and Parent handbooks • Assist in the development and maintenance of the School calendar • Conduct evacuation/lockdown drills and oversee evacuation and lockdown

procedures • Monitor tidiness both in the playground and classrooms • Support targeted staff on a regular basis by visiting classrooms, listening, advising,

counselling, helping, encouraging, resource assistance etc • Assist new staff and casual staff as required • Oversight of the student teacher programme at the School • Work collaboratively with the KLA Coordinators and Team Leaders to ensure the

upkeep of all NESA documentation – including program registration, assessment schedules and mark book

• Implement and upkeep NESA requirements for the school, including student enrolment, grades and disability provisions applications

• Oversee Senior secondary subject choices and selection including Distance Education, TVET and VET requirements.

• Liaise with the primary, middle and senior school coordinators to develop a K-12 Scope and Sequence for curriculum at OCS

• Liaise with the library and KLA coordinators concerning the purchasing of resources for the library.

• Oversee the implementation of the literacy and numeracy continuum K-10 • The provision and maintenance of student records and files and of student

achievements and other relevant details. • Coordinate and train student leaders through involvement in the Student Leadership

Team (SLT), including the nomination and selection process for the SLT on a yearly basis.

• Attend and/or facilitate Parent Information Evenings when necessary • Monitor the Parent Involvement program and make recommendations to the

Executive as seen fit. • Determine and enforce day to day procedures within Board policy guidelines.

Self-Development

• Attend professional development conferences, seminars etc • Undertake professional and Christian Education reading • Establish and maintain professional contact with equivalent professionals in other

Christian schools and Independent schools throughout NSW and Australia • Provide guidance in curriculum matters, liaising with curriculum coordinators and

team leaders as required. • Allocate and delegate responsibilities as and when appropriate to other staff

members in conjunction with school executive. • Facilitate curriculum meetings in conjunction with KLA Team Leaders and any other

meetings required for the smooth functioning of the school staff.

Other Responsibilities

• Deputise for the Principal as required • Chair/attend committees as required • Serve as the intermediate point between sub-school issues reaching Principal's

office • In consultation with the Principal, the completion of other tasks/projects as

required • A teaching load of approximately 0.25 FTE, as required.

Selection Criteria:

• A committed Christian active in their local church, who models Christ-like behaviour in both word and action.

• Be a registered teacher with NESA and have met Child Safety regulations. • Excellent skills in leading and managing teams, with proven ability to inspire all staff

to deliver excellent learning and teaching programs and processes.

• Demonstrates a commitment to Christian Education. • Knowledge of Australian and NSW curriculum, Government legislation and requirements

of NESA in areas of Learning and Teaching. • Knowledge and experience in leading staff in the implementation of a Christ-centred

curriculum from Prep to Year 12. AND/OR Proven experience in day to day school organisation in a K-12 school contact.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

We believe:

1. That the Bible alone is the inspired Word of God and the final authority for Christian belief and conduct.

2. There is one God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, as

sovereign Creator and Ruler of the universe. 3. In the Deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious

and atoning death through His shed blood, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father and His personal return in power and glory.

4. In the actual existence of Satan who is the father of all evil and opposed to God
