Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler Term 2 2020 It was during the second week of the Easter break that we were informed of the phased student return to school. As part of this plan, students continued online learning during weeks 1 and 2. From week 3, each student was given the opportunity to come into school one day a week. We as a school, decided to bring Year 12 back five days a week. By the start of week 5 all students had returned to campus. All in all a very eventful term. Here are some of my take-awaysfrom term 2: 1. Students actually missed school and started to say things like When can we come back?2. All students are now connected to Google Classrooms for each of their courses. This has benefited many students as they now have class resources on a central platform. 3. Staff were fast to adapt. Class resources and assessments were modified for the online environment. As a whole we are all more confident when engaging students and facilitating collaboration in an online setting. Some of the skills learnt are also helpful in the face-to-face setting. 4. We appreciated the huge amount of support from our parents and this inspired many staff to go the extra mile. 5. Our students stuck with us through the journey! Due to the asbestos remediation works, we currently have no access to blocks B and D. This has resulted in many demountable buildings on the top oval. We were amazed how everyone (staff and students) simply got on with the job upon returning to face-to face learning. High Achievers Morning Tea Congratulations to our Year 11 students who were invited to our high achievers morning tea on Wednesday. After every reporting period we hold high achiever s morning teas to recognise and celebrate outstanding academic achievement. There are three high achiever morning teas; one for Year 12, one for Year 11 and a combined Years 7 to 10 event. Congratulations to the Year 11 students who attended Wednesdays celebration. It was great to see some new faces among the regulars. How do we decide who attends these morning teas? An average is taken of all the rank positions and the lower this average the better a student has done across all of their subjects. Our Year 11 girls secured 18 of the top 25 places. Next term, I am going to meet with our Year 11 boys and challenge them to gain the majority of places at the next high achievers assembly. This will be held at the start of term 4. Here are some of my ‘take-aways’ from term 2: 1. Students actually missed school and started to say things like “When can we come

back?” 2. All students are now connected to Google Classrooms for each of their courses. This has benefited many

students as they now have class resources on a central platform. 3. Staff were fast to adapt. Class resources and assessments were modified for the online environment. As a

whole we are all more confident when engaging students and facilitating collaboration in an online setting.

After every reporting period we hold high achiever’s morning teas to recognise and celebrate outstanding academic achievement. There are three high achiever morning teas; one for Year 12, one for Year 11 and a combined Years 7 to 10 event. Congratulations to the Year 11 students who attended Wednesday’s celebration. It was great to see some new faces among the regulars. How do we decide who attends these morning teas? Friday lunchtime staff v student games Each Friday lunchtime, we have a large gathering of students looking to burn off some post lockdown energy. Last Friday we had over 50 students and staff involved in touch football and Oztag matches on the bottom oval. The holidays will come at a good time for the students to do some additional training. At the moment our staff team is undefeated ;)

Mid Year School Reports – Years 7-10 Reports will be made available via the Parent Portal on Friday 3 July (today). If you do not receive your child ’s re-port please notify the appropriate Year Adviser or Deputy Principal. Years 7 and 8 – [email protected] Years 9 and 11 – [email protected] Years 10 and 12 – [email protected] Subject Selection Year 10 The time has come for our Year 10 students to start thinking about what courses they will select in years 11 and 12. We have designed a series of steps that will hopefully mean students are informed and supported in this pro-cess. Here are the steps moving forward: Week 10, Term 2 - Friday

A PDF of the Subject Selection Booklet will be emailed to students and parents on Friday afternoon. A link will also be forwarded to provide access to clips for some courses. Each of the clips star past students dis-cussing their course.

SUBJECT TASTER SESSIONS - Week 1, Term 3 – Friday 24th July

During periods 1-3-5 on Friday 24th July, students will move around the school in their roll classes and will hear from subject teachers across all KLAs. The aim of these sessions is to provide an insight into what one might expect in each particular course.

COACHING - Weeks 2-3, Term 3 – Monday 27th July to Wednesday 5th August • Students will meet with a staff member, who will lead a 20 minute coaching session. All students are expected to engage in this step. Feedback from past students tells us that this is a valued step in the process. PARENT AND STUDENT INFORMATION EVENING - Week 2, Term 3 – Thursday 30th July, 6:30-7:30pm in the School Hall The evening will cover:

What are the options when choosing my pattern of study?

What should I keep in mind when choosing my courses?

What tips can be passed on from two of our current Year 12 students?

What questions do I have for our Heads of Department?

Should I consider a TAFE/school pathway? This evening will be zoomed and we will follow the health advice at the time. Thus, it may be possible for parents to be in attendance.

Week 3, Term 3 – Wednesday 5th August to Friday 7th August • Students will make their course selections in week 3, term 3.

What will term 3 look like? Assuming NSW continues on the current trajectory, there will be increased opportunities for students to return to extra curricular activities. Below you will find an outline of some of the activities planned to resume in term 3.

Inter-school student events and competitions (choirs, grade sport, debating, public speaking, performing arts). Special Religious Education activities. Parent/teacher meetings – strong preference for on-line where possible unless involving serious matters that require face to face discussion. Parent/carer school pick up and drop off – current arrangements will continue. Parents/carers should not be on school grounds or at school events without permission. Work experience for students (with appropriate risk assessment). Practicum teaching for tertiary education students. VET work placements can proceed subject to the availability of placement and appropriate risk assessments. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships can recommence once the relevant workplaces are back in opera-tion.

Activities under consideration from Term 3 The following events will be reconsidered in Term 3. For now these events must remain on hold.

School camps. Excursions (other than field trips explained above). Parent attendance at assemblies and other school events (e.g. graduation ceremonies or student speech events). Interstate excursions. School-based activities that involve large gathering of adults are not permitted at this time. These include parent/community gatherings such as parent functions, working bees, fundraisers, school BBQs, large parent information evenings, and large on-site cultural events. These large gatherings and the following activities will continue to be reviewed and assessed based on AHPPC and NSW Health advice and may be permitted at a later date. Year 12 Holiday lessons During the break there will be holiday tutorials for the following courses. Students have been sent a link to their school email addresses that requests them to register for each of the workshops they will be attending. This will assist our teachers when planning each session. Many thanks to our staff for delivering these workshops.

Physics Chemistry Biology Business Studies Geography Design and Technology History Extension Textiles PDHPE Food Technology English (EALD) English Standard Standard Mathematics Mathematics (Advanced) Mathematics Ext 1 and Ext 2 Visual Arts Music IPT Spanish Hospitality (Yr 11 and Yr 12 classes) Earth and Environmental Science

JAPANESE NEWS

It's been a great term for 7T Japanese with students producing a video of themselves as a Japanese celebrity. There were chefs, athletes, film stars, politicians, samurai and singers. The videos were extremely well done. I am amazed by how far they have come, even with a period of several weeks learning online. Not only were their lan-

guage skills evident but so were their video editing skills. All Year 7 students completed this task in the language they are studying this year and there were some extremely entertaining videos.

The last few weeks have had a cultural focus in 7T. Students have watched documentaries, tried on Japa-nese yukata (a cotton kimono) and learned about The Star Festival or TANABATA in Japanese. It is common to write a wish on a colourful strip of paper and tie it to bamboo for Tanabata and 7T students did this in class.

We have also farewelled our Year 11 German ex-change student Ann-Katrin Klewer today with a sayo-nara party. We enjoyed a range of snacks and food including rice, miso soup, umeboshi (sour plums) and Japanese tea. Anne was grateful to be able to study Japanese as she would not have had the opportunity to do so in Germany. Anne san, kore kara mo Nihongo o ganbatte kudasai ne. Keep trying with Japanese in the future. We will miss Anne. She has been a wonder-ful student in our class.

FROM THE P&C REGARDING EMAIL COMMUNICATIONS

Some people are still reporting that they are not receiving emails from the P&C either regarding Meeting notices or the resultant minutes of the meeting. As part of the investigation into why this might be happening, it has been sug-gested that these emails might be landing in the Promotions folder of a gmail account. If you use gmail to get your emails, the default view looks something like that below with the three headings (highlighted in Yellow) for Primary, Social and Promotions. Google uses algorithms to sort emails it thinks you might not want to see. So, for example, anything from Facebook would go into Social, but emails sent directly to you got to Primary and email blasts (like our emails) could go to Promotions. If you use this format, Google is automatically sorting the emails from different sources into Primary, Social and Promotions. The mailchimp emails go into the Promotions folder. The default view you see when you open your email is "Primary" and you might not be checking "Promotions". You have two options: 1. Change the email view: You can change the way your email displays so that everything is in one list (if you want to) or you can remem-ber to look in Promotions. Here's the link if you want to change the default view ... https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3094499?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en 2. Change just these emails:

Right Click on the email message in the Promotions folder, click Move to tab, click Primary

You will see a message telling you the conversation has been moved and asking if you want all future messages

from this address to be moved as well. Click Yes All future messages from this address (the mailchimp address) will be moved to your Primary folder. Hopefully this will help our communications going forward.

If you gave any problems or queries. Please contact us on secretary@stivespandc,com

Lifeline has opened a pop-up book shop at 21 Hill St Roseville. We are unable to hold our very popular Annual book fair in July this year because of COVID-19 constraints and will instead be selling our books in Roseville for the next few months. The shop has a great range of cheaply priced pre-loved books including children's books in all age rang-es and will be regularly restocked. There are also many fiction and non-fiction books for adult readers. The shop will be open between 10am and 4pm from Tuesday to Saturday each week. All funds raised go to support the vital life-saving services provided by Lifeline. There is a fantastic range of books available at the Roseville shop. All books are in excel-lent condition, are individually cleaned by our volunteers and are attractively priced.
