Message from Antonia Romeo, Permanent Secretary

The Department for International Trade (DIT) have overall responsibility for

developing, coordinating and delivering trade and investment policy for the UK,

including preparing for and negotiating global Free Trade Agreements and

market access, and promoting UK trade and investment across the world.

We are a department for the whole of the UK, and we work with business

partners at home and globally in 108 different countries. In our engagement, we

strive to understand businesses’ needs for the international trading environment

and support their ambitions to export and invest across borders.

We are also collaborative in how we work with each other, supporting one

another and sharing our successes and challenges. All our staff are continually

building expertise which will be critical to all areas of DIT’s work.

About the Department for International Trade

The Department for International Trade (DIT) was created three and a half years ago,

with responsibility for promoting British trade and investment around the world, as well

as coordinating and delivering a new trade policy for the UK outside the EU.

DIT helps UK businesses to export, secures inward and outward investment,

negotiates market access and trade agreements and champions free trade. The work

of the department has never been more crucial. For the first time in over 40 years we

have an independent trade policy, with our department responsible for building the

capability to use this to take advantage of the opportunities presented through leaving

the EU.

Trade and investment have been central to the success of the UK economy and will

be important to delivering on the government’s levelling up agenda. By using our

range of tools to reduce barriers to trade and investment we can encourage flows of

goods, services and capital between countries; make it easier for firms to export,

import and invest; stimulate innovation, competition and productivity gains; and help

address regional imbalances by improving living standards through offering

consumers a wider and more affordable range of products. By securing global

prosperity, international trade and investment activities also contribute to global

stability and security, support economic development and poverty reduction in

developing countries and enhance the UK’s global influence.

Through our work at posts, we aim to support UK companies exporting internationally

by utilising our expertise of overseas markets, drive growth by opening new markets

for UK companies, and attract more FDI into the UK.

DIT delivers our priorities through a wide range of activities, products and digital

services designed to help businesses take full advantage of global opportunities,

helping them to succeed internationally as the UK shapes its own trade agenda and

takes its place on the world stage as a great, global trading nation.

The Deputy Director will lead the promotion of the UK to the world, shaping it’s brand strategy and

partnerships approach.

The GREAT campaign is the UK government’s largest single campaign, promoting the UK to the rest of

the world. It showcases the amazing assets of our country has and is live in 144 countries worldwide.

Over 20 different government departments use it, ranging from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media

and Sport to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The campaign is the widely regarded as the finest example of country branding anywhere in the world,

and it’s easy to see why. From taking the Red Arrows on a tour of North America, bespoke events with

the James Bond movie franchise, to partnerships with iconic British brands like Aston Martin, McLaren,

the Premier League, Burberry and Wimbledon. The campaign also enjoys committed support from a

number of high profile British citizens, including Kelly Hoppen, Jo Malone, Ken Hom, David Bailey,

Katherine Jenkins, and many more.

Salary: £70,000 - £80,000 per annum

The Role

• This is a significant role in government communications that will suit an experienced

leader.

Key responsibilities include:

• Owning and developing the brand strategy for the campaign, from gathering appropriate

insight, setting the strategic direction of the value proposition and proof points, to

directing the creative output.

• Identifying and delivering iconic campaigns that promote British excellence to the world.

From advertising campaigns to large scale events at embassies.

• Leading relationships with partners in high profile British organisations (including CEO of

The Selection Process

The panel will be chaired by Dan Ramsay, and will include:

Full details of the panel will be confirmed if you are invited to

interview.

Assessments

If you are shortlisted, you will be asked to take part in a series of

assessments which could include psychometric tests and a staff engagement

exercise. These assessments will not result in a pass or fail decision. Rather,

they are designed to support the panel’s decision making and highlight areas

for the panel to explore further at interview.

You will also have the opportunity to speak to Dan Ramsay prior to the final

interview to learn more about the role and the organisation. Please note this

is not part of the formal assessment process.

You will be asked to attend a panel interview in order to

have a more in-depth discussion of your previous

experience and professional competence in relation to the

criteria set out in the Person Specification.

The Civil Service Commission has three primary functions:

• To provide assurance that selection for appointment to the Civil Service is on merit on the

basis of fair and open competition as outlined in the Civil Service Commission’s Recruitment

Principles. For the most senior posts in the Civil Service, the Commission discharges its

responsibilities directly by overseeing the recruitment process and by a Commissioner

chairing the selection panel.

• To hear and determine appeals made by civil servants under the Civil Service Code which

sets out the Civil Service values – Honesty, Integrity, Impartiality and Objectivity – and forms

part of the relationship between civil servants and their employer.

• Civil Service Commissioners chair selection panels for all external recruitment competitions

at Senior Civil Service Pay Band 2 (Directors), Pay Band 3 (Director General) and

Permanent Secretary levels. An external competition is one that is advertised outside the

Civil Service and candidates who are not existing civil servants may apply.
