There are but slight prospects that any sprint records will be broken in this year's Intercollegiates. For many years past the Eastern colleges have furnished each season one or two re- markably fast sprinters, but this year there does not seem to be In all the collegia of the Intercollegiate Associa- tion a man of real championship calibre.
In Saturday's meet at Annapolis, Brown did the 100 In 10 seconds for Pennsylvania, time which has been equalled this season only by Spiegel of Lafayette. It is believed, however, that, although ten seconds was given out as the time for the Lafayette man. it was due to a mistake of the timer as Spiegel had not previously shown himself capable of making even sec- onds.
The best men to date are Marshall, Brown and Mercer, of Pennsylvania | Harland and Thomas, of Princeton Jacobs, of Columbia: Robertson, of Syracuse, and Oleson, of Dartmouth. Should Marshall recover his form he la undoubtedly the fastest of thSM men. If Marshall should not get over his injury in time, Brown will increase Pennsylvania's chances, for he has shown form superior to that of tin Princeton men. Harland and Thomas "Mike" Murphy has unearthed Mother sprinter In Aldridge. who has made but two appearances this season, and he seems to be improving every day. With tint ■ little more Improvement he is likely to score in the sprints at ihe coming championships. Jacobs, of Columbia; Robertson, of lyracus*, and Oleaon, of Dartmouth, are all capa- ble of doing 10 1-5 seconds, but have never been known to make faster time
Although the sprints are below the usual standard of the Intercollegiate* ■ his roar, the meet as a whole will probably be the best that has VTSf been held. Athletic critics are looking for remarkable times and records In several of the events, notably the two- mile, the pole -vault, the shot-put. the hammer throw, the quarter-mile and the half-mile.

Dr. TalCOtt Williams. IMd of the MS Polltaer School of Journalism, In addressing tin Cornell "Sun" Ho;inl
annual banquet, gave expression \ to his views of the duty of college newspapers. He said, in part:
"Tli.'ii' is nothing in a university on watch its reputation so much depends as the newspaper which It publishes It emulates all over-the country, to other universities, to high schools, and any faults it makes are Immedi- ately taken up by the press. The de- sire of the indivdual to express hini- gtlf sometimes gets the better of him and he forgets his trust. If an un- tortnnate paragraph appears, it is clipped and passes under the eyes of millions of readers. This one trivial act is taken by the public as repre- senting the university and leaves the impression that the university Is trivial in common sense.
"A college newspaper represents a University as nothing else does. The nsWSpSD«C man has a great responsi- bility laid upon him He must have exact and accurate knowledge, he must study unremittingly, he must write a message powerful anil convinc- ing—a mere felicitous facility is the b Ml important part of his work."
