LIVING IN BEAUFORT & SKIPTON
Beaufort is located midway between Ballarat and Ararat on the Western Highway, 163km north‐
west of Melbourne.
Skipton is close to the same distance from Melbourne, but almost directly west of the city, situated
on the Glenelg Highway around 32 km south of Beaufort.
ATTRACTIONS, CULTURE AND CLIMATE:
Climate
Beaufort & Skipton have similar temperate climates to that of Ballarat, with hot summers and cold,
frosty winters. Average summer maximum temperatures are around 26◦C
Beaufort
Beaufort is situated in a district noted for its merino wool production. Gold was first discovered in
1852, causing the usual large increase in population and building works, but it was short‐lived and
most of the easy to mine gold was depleted 10 years later.
Historical buildings still remain today, such as the post office (below), railway station, a lovely
octagonal band rotunda topped with an ornate clock, and several churches.
Camp Hill Reserve is located on the north side of Beaufort, which includes areas of native forest, picnic
and BBQ areas, and a lookout which provides scenic views of the town and surrounding countryside.
Beaufort Lake is on the southern edge of town near the sports oval. There are walking tracks around
the lake, picnic areas, and a jetty.
Lake Goldsmith is around 10‐15 km south of Beaufort, which boasts a wildlife reserve, native
grasslands and trees, and is a habitat for local duck and bird life.

Skipton
Skipton is an agricultural town known for fine wool production, located in Victoria’s western district.
It is known as ‘the home of the platypus’. Mount Emu Creek has a healthy population of redfin and
platypuses. Recent trapping surveys have shown that the platypus is breeding successfully right in
the heart of the township. The best place to view these beautiful animals is in Stewart Park.
One of Skipton’s claim to fame was the Hollywood actress who moved to the town in 1918. The
wealthiest farmer in the district returned from an extended trip overseas with a Hollywood bride –
the silent movie star Claire Adams.
