The syllabi was revised in 2007 and papers which are contemporary, like -

Environmental Economics, Infrastructure Economics and Computer applications and

research methods are introduced. The Faculty members have framed different

modules in the syllabi based on their specialized knowledge.

4. Trend in the success rate and drop out of students during the last five

years.

The success rate of the students is about 90 to 95% during the last 5 years.

The dropout rate of students is increasing in recent years due to late admissions

made to B.Ed. Course.

5. Learning resources of the department like library, computers, laboratories

and other such resources.

The Department Council has recommended standard books in adequate number to

the Library and has facilitated the students to utilize the Computer facility from the

Computer Center of the University. The Department has OHP to use it during

lectures.

6. Enhancement of the learning resources during the past five years.

Computers, OHP have been added to the Department. LCD is also available.

7. Modern Teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method.

Other than the lecture method, the Faculty conducts class/general seminars every

week in which the students participate very enthusiastically. In addition, methods like

quiz discussions, tutorials etc. are also used by the faculty to benefit the students.

Remedial teaching is arranged for the needy students after the regular class hours.

Guest lectures by visiting faculty are also arranged. Teachers also guide the students

to prepare for competitive examinations.

8. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students.

The students are given freedom to consult their teachers to clarify their doubts or

seek extra explanation from them. Counseling of the student is undertaken by

teachers to solve their personal problems also. Orientation programme is organised

for the freshers to provide all the necessary information at the entry point.

9. Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who benefited

during the past five years.

One of the faculty members has attended the Orientation Course and Refresher Course and

he was able to complete his Ph.D., under Faculty Development Programme.

10. Participation of teachers in academic activities other than teaching and research.

Faculty members are active in their academic activities; as they are invited to deliver

Key Note and Inaugural Addresses and for Chairing Sessions at National level

Seminars and Conferences. One of the faculty member chaired a Session in National

Conference of Indian Economic Association at Vishakapatnam, in 2005. Teachers are

also presenting papers in National Seminars/Conferences regularly. Another Staff

member presented a paper at 17th International Conference on Modern South Asian

Studies, at University of Heidelberg, Germany. Two staff members have attended and

presented papers at international seminars organized in India at New Delhi, Chennai,

Pondicherry and Hyderabad.

Faculty members work as consultants to the Karnataka Government, Zilla Panchayat and

NGOs. They are involved in Planning-, Monitoring and Evaluation of Government

programmes.

Research is a significant activity in the Department. Major research work is carried

out on agriculture, and rural development, Regional Development, small industries,

taxation, fiscal policy and gender issues. The focus of many studies is on burning and

current problems of this region.

The Faculty has completed three major projects and three major projects are ‘on-going’.

One is in the pipe-line. The Department has generated about Rs.28 lakhs during the last five

years.

14. ‘Programmes by research’ offered by the university.

The department offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees through research.

15. Publications of the faculty, for the past five years. Details regarding

citation index and impact factor analysis.

The faculty in the last five years has published 64 papers in different journals,

magazines and newspapers. Publications widely cover the current issues like impact

of globalization on various sectors of the economy, backward regions, dry land

farming, women empowerment, entrepreneurship development etc. The citation

index is not available.

16. Participation of the department in the extension activities of the university.

Faculty has been actively participating in the extension activities of the University.

They have delivered several lectures under the auspicious of Prasaranga and in NSS

Camps. Dr. Vasudev Sedam served as Student welfare officer of the University.

Students also participate in NSS and NCC activities of the University.

17. Method of continuous student assessment.

Students are assessed through continuous internal tests and assignments, along with

the Seminars and group discussions.

department to the student placements.

Sixty percent of past students are employed in various institutions as Lecturers,

Officers in Banks and in Excise Department. The Department has good rapport with

various affiliated colleges of the University and with other Universities and it assists

students through providing information and guidance about the job opportunities.

The students are also trained as field investigators in various projects.

19. Significant achievements of the department or faculty or students during past

five years.

Prof. M.S. Kallur, served as Member of Academic Council of Central University,

Pondicherry. He worked as a member of State Level Committee in selection of the

departments as ‘Center of Advanced Studies.’ He is working as a Executive Body

member of Indian Economic Association, which is an internationally acclaimed

Academic Body. Prof M.S. Kallur and Prof. C.K. Degaonkar are serving as the

members in State level Technical Teams. Prof. C.K. Degaonkar is a member of the

State level Team of UNDP for preparation of Human Development Report. She is a

member of District Planning Committee. She is involved in Planning Monitoring and

Evaluation of World Bank Assistance to Backward districts of Bidar and Gulbarga in

Karnataka. She is also a consultant to NGOs. Miss Maline Tantri a student is warded

JRF and is placed at Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore.

Mr. Krishna, a past student, was selected to participate in the national level Inter-

University Chess Competition. Mr. Arvind, a student has won the first prize at the

State Level Debate Competition held by Department of Cooperation, Karnataka in

2007.

21. Plan of action of the University Department for the next five years.

It is proposed to establish a Centre for Rural Development and a Center for

Hyderabad Karnataka Development which will serve as research and consultancy

center as well as promote outreach activities to help the people of this backward

Region. The Department along with Commerce and Management Faculty has plans to

collaborate with Sunderland University, UK for the establishment of School of

Business Studies. Many research projects have been planned for overall development

and to bring changes in this backward region.

22. Any other highlights.

The Department prepared a Development Plan for this Backward Region. Faculty visits other

university libraries and research centers for upgrading their knowledge and collecting relevant

information required for students. The U.G. C. Expert Committee of Tenth Five Year Plan,

appreciated the research work done in the Department and sanctioned a lecturer’s post

under X plan. The department is currently involved in Minority Survey of Bidar and Gulbarga

Districts sponsored by Government of India – Ministry of Minority Affairs. Prof. M.S. Kallur has

received two awards.

The staff is competent to take up the existing PG and research courses in the

department. The programmes are managed with three guest faculty.

The students of different castes representing the five districts of Gulbarga University,

seek admissions for studies in History for M.A., M. Phil. and Ph.D. courses. Girls are

44% of the total at P.G. level but their representation at research level is only 10

percent. The students from Gulbarga and Raichur district constitute 50 % of students

of History Department.

The department of History has undertaken adequate steps to update M.A. Syllabus

and restructured it twice in the last five years latest in 2003 of Non-Semester and

Semester courses respectively and has introduced four new programmers paper of

study i.e.,

1. Indian Renaissance and Reformation.

2. Freedom Movement in Karnataka

3. The Contemporary History of India

4. The History of Bahamani Kingdom.

The faculty members have actively contributed to frame the syllabi of these papers

as per UGC guidelines. Besides, the Dept of History has ventured to introduce

Museology and Archaeology at the Degree level at Gangavati First Grade College and

Diploma Course in Tourism at Veerashiva College to promote tourism in this historical

region.

The success rate of students is 98-100 percent. The average dropout rate is

10 percent, during last five years.

The department is well equipped with teaching learning materials like, OHP, Maps,

Charts, Museum relics Documented records, Rare collection of Coins and photo

documents.

6. Enhancement of the learning resources during the past five years.

The department has enhanced its learning resources by way of collecting Archival,

Photo documentation and Monuments of the area and also collecting rare specimen

of Roman coins.

Other than lecture method, the teachers have adopted modern methods like Group

Discussion, Seminars, Workshops Study tours Audio- Video Visuals and the Tests

etc., to impart the learning skills to the students.

Through interaction, conduct of Seminars engaging extra coaching classes etc., the

teachers promote academic excellence of the students. They also guide the students

in their personal difficulties.

Two of the teachers working in the Dept. have attended the Orientation and

Refresher Courses in different Universities.

Other than teaching and research, the teachers of History Dept have been actively

participating in Conferences, Workshops and History Congress Sessions and

NSS/SWO activities. They are also serving in various committees formed by the

University for Academic Excellence.

The faculty members have completed two projects. Fresh project proposals have

been submitted for approval to Govt. of Karnataka. The Dept of History has

submitted a Project at the instruction of the University to the Government of

Karnataka to institute the Chair for Studies on the Freedom Fighters of Hyderabad –

Karnataka. Besides, the following research Projects have been submitted:

1. Quit India Movement in Isoor by Prof. B. C. Mahabaleswarappa 2. Feudal System

of Europe and Nayakara System of Vijayanagara. A Comparative Study by

Dr. Smt. Z. K. Ansaari and 3. Fairs and Festivals in Karnataka by Dr. Smt. Manjula B.

Chincholi.

The University has contemplated the idea of instituting the Chair for Gandhian and

Buddhist Studies to encourage research for peace and progress.

the University. The students actively participate in NSS and sports and other student

Faculty profile, adequacy and competency of faculty

The University has started Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC) from

the academic year 2007-08. The Department has four faculty members. All are guest

faculty. Two Professors in Library and Information Science have expertise in ICT’s

applications and other two members of the faculty are from Journalism and Mass

Communication. The university has given a proposal for creation of teaching posts under

UGC XI Plan Proposal. In addition, local journalists’ expertise is being utilized for teaching

and practical purpose.

The staff is competent to handle the course.

Student profile according to programmes of study, gender, region etc. 2.

The intake for MJMC is ten seats under merit cum reservation. Besides this the

department admits five students under Self-Supporting Scheme and eligible candidates

under Special Category (Defense/ Freedom fighters, physically handicapped, Sports/ NCC/

NSS, Other University in the State and Out-of-State). Out of twenty students admitted

three are girls. The students’ come from all the five districts of University jurisdiction and

the percentage of rural students is more. Most of the students are Arts graduates with

Kannada as medium of instruction at under graduate level. SC/ST and OBC students form

more than 99% of the intake.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past five years

and the contribution of the faculty to those changes.

The MJMC Two Years Course (Semester Scheme) being offered by the Department

is introduced from the academic year 2007-08. Each semester consists of six papers

(Four theory and Two Practicals), out of which one theory and one practical is on

ICT. The course has been designed keeping in view the present requirements of the

profession with an emphasis on ICT applications in Journalism and Mass

Communication.

4. Trend in the success rate and drop out of students during the last five

years.

The course has been started from the academic year 2007-08. Out of twenty students

admitted to the course, eight are not coming to the classes regularly. This being the

first year, and the medium of instruction is in English, though the students can write

either in English or Kannada, there has been drop out rate of 40%. May be in coming

years as the students realize the importance of the course, the drop out rate will

definitely will come down.

5. Learning resources of the department like library, computers, laboratories

and other such resources.

The University has a well equipped library, which has added the books on Journalism

and Mass Communication worth of approximately one lakh during the academic year

2007-08. Though, the Department has no independent computer laboratory of its own,

it uses the University Central Computer Facility for conducting ICT Practicals.

The University is making effort to develop laboratories required to conduct practical

classes and has plans to have an MOU with AIR, Gulbarga and Doordarshan Kendra,

Gulbarga and with Private TV Channels in Gulbarga. It also has plans to have an MOU

with all the major Newspaper agencies, whose regional offices are located in Gulbarga.

The process has already been initiated in this direction.

6. Enhancement of the learning resources during the past five years.

The courses offered by the Department require various learning tools such as

General Purpose Softwares – MS-Office, PageMaker, Special Softwares used in

Newspapers establishments, TV Centers and Radio stations. The Department

requires two OHPs, two LCDs, Digital Cameras and Computers with multimedia

facilities. The efforts are being made to acquire them on a phased basis.

Other than the lecture method, faculty members are using OHP and LCD for

presentation (ICT Practicals), in addition to giving hands on assignments. Group

discussion, seminar presentation, internship, study tour, one-to-one interactions are

also being used.

The members of the faculty are regularly engaging two hours per week, in academic

and personal counseling of students. Three students are allotted to each teacher.

The Department intends to develop the infrastructure – human resources, laboratory

facilities – Design and Development of TV and Radio programs, a full fledged

laboratory for design, development and production of Print and Electronic Versions

of Newspapers. To make the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of

the University as a Training Center and a Resource Center on all aspects of

Journalism and Mass Communication in Hyderabad-Karnataka Region.

The Department is also planning to introduce certificate and diploma courses in

Journalism and Mass Communication under self-supporting scheme.

The Department wants to create a database of Journalists and Mass Media

Professionals and Newspapers in Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

Faculty profile, adequacy and competency of faculty

The Department has six faculty members (Two Professors and Three Readers, but

one Lecturer (Sr. Scale) was relived from his duty from the university recently. The

faculty has qualifications as per UGC guidelines. The Department has full-fledged

faculty, which has consistent academic record and competency to impart education

and training in LIS including ICT applications.

The intake for MLISc First semester is twenty. In addition to this, the department

admits six students under Self Supporting Scheme and eligible candidates under

Special Category (Defense / Freedom fighters, Physically handicapped,

Sports/NCC/NSS, Other University in the state and Out of state). Over a period of

time, the percentage of girls seeking admission to the course is increasing. The

students hail from all the five districts of University jurisdiction and the percentage

of rural students is also increasing. Majority of the students are Arts graduates with

Kannada as medium of instruction at under graduate level. SC/ST and OBC students

constitute more than 99% of the intake. During the period, 09 (Nine) students

have obtained M. Phil and 05 (Five) Ph.D. from the Department. The demographic

characteristics applicable to MLISc course holds well with M. Phil and Ph.D.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past five years

and the contribution of the faculty to those changes.

MLISc Course of two years under semester scheme was introduced in the year

2003-04. The major change was made in response to UGC recommendations and

as per NAAC requirements. While restructuring the course under semester scheme,

the present-day needs of the employers, contemporary developments in the field,

UGC-NET, feedback from the past students and the future requirements of the

profession are considered. Each semester consists of six papers (Four theory and

Two Practicals), out of which one theory and one practical is on ICT. All the

members of the faculty of the Department and the members of Board of Studies in

Library and Information Science GUG have significantly contributed in design and

development of the course.

4. Trend in the success rate and drop out of students during the last five

years.

The success rate ranges from 98-100% and the drop out rate has declined as a

function of time, though there are stray incidents of one or two drop outs in a year.

5. Learning resources of the department like library, computers,

laboratories and other such resources.

The University has a well equipped library, which over the years has developed the

information resources, facilities and services keeping in view the requirements of

various programs offered by the Department. The Department uses the University

Central Computer Facility for conducting ICT Practicals. The department has

9 computers.

6. Enhancement of the learning resources during the past five years.

The courses offered by the Department require various learning tools such as

Classification Schedules, Manuals, Handbooks, Catalogue Codes, General Purpose

Softwares – MS-Office, WINSIS, PageMaker, Library Softwares – SOUL, EasyLib and

LibSys. The Department has an informal agreement with EasyLib Pvt. Ltd.,

Bangalore, and has acquired the software free of cost for academic purpose. Demo

version SOUL – Software for University Libraries developed by INFLIBNET, has been

acquired. One OHP, one LCD and Nine Computers (P4) have been added to the

Department under X Five Year Plan.

7. Modern Teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method.

Other than the lecture method, faculty members are also using OHP and LCD for

presentation, giving hands on assignments. Group discussion, seminar presentation,

internship, study tour, one-to-one interactions are also being used.

students.

The members of the faculty are regularly participating two hours per week in

academic and personal counseling of students. Five – Six students are allotted to

each teacher.

during the past five years.

Two members of the faculty Dr. V.T. Kamble, and Dr. D.B. Patil have attended

Refresher Course organized by Kuvempu University, Shankarghatta, B.R. Project

and this has helped them to update their knowledge.

research.

All the members of the faculty are members of Department Council, BOS in Lib &

Inf. Sc., Ph.D. Review Committee/Doctoral Committee, and BOE and actively

involved in academic activities.

and International level and their outcome during the past five years.

The Department faculty is involved in teaching of some of the courses, which are

interdisciplinary in nature on the University campus such as Master of Business

Administration and Master of Journalism and Mass Communication. One faculty

member of the Department has a project in collaboration with one of the central

universities in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

12. If research is a significant activity, the thrust areas of the Department.

The thrust areas of research are: User Studies, Informetrics/ ICT Applications,

Academic Libraries, Special Libraries, Rural Libraries, Community Information

Services, and Collection Development.

five years.

Dr. N. Parvathamma, Professor in the Department has completed one major project

of UGC on “Creation of Database of Faculty of Gulbarga University and Its

Affiliated Colleges” worth Rs. 90,000/-. Dr. Lalitha K Sami, Reader in the

Department has a project on “Role of Universities in Digitizing Rural Areas”

jointly with Dr. Shahida of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad worth

of Rs. 8.35 Lakhs.

During the period, the faculty has published quite a good number of papers in

national (18) and international (02) journals including pre-conference volumes (30).

The national journals in which the faculty published are reputed and many of them

are refereed as well. To name a few: Annals of Library and Information Studies,

SRELS Journal of Information Management, ILA Bulletin. Herald of Library and

Malaysian Journal of Library and Information Science are the two foreign journals in

which the faculty has published. The papers published by the faculty in professional

journals are not covered by Citation Indexes. Hence the mean impact factor cannot

be calculated. However, these publications are abstracted/indexed in major

abstracting and indexing services like LISA, ILISA, ISA, LISTA, INSPEC,

www.emeraldinsight.com, Guide to Indian Periodical Literature, and Index India

etc.

16. Participation of the department in the extension activities of the

university.

The members of the faculty and students are actively involved in extension

activities of the university.

17. Method of continuous student assessment.

As part of MLISc program under Semester Scheme, the Department has introduced

continuous assessment of students as part of internal assessment since 2003-04.

Two internal assessment tests are conducted in each semester.

18. Placement record of the past students and the contribution of the

department to the student placements.

Each student of the Department is placed in reputed institutions all over India. To

the best of our knowledge, no student who has completed MLISc degree is

unemployed. In this regard, the Department has contacts with the various

institutions in the state and out side the state and monitors the placement of

students every year.

19. Significant achievements of the department or faculty or students during

past five years.

Dr. P.G. Tadasad, Lecturer Sr. Scale, has received two national awards for

contributing research papers by RRRLF, Kolkatta and ILA, New Delhi. Ten students

during this period have successfully qualified UGC-NET Lectureship. Out of which

one has qualified for JRF.

21. Plan of action of the University Department for the next five years.

The Department intends to introduce certificate and diploma courses under self

supporting programs on the following areas: Information Literacy Skills, Technical

Writing Skills, Data Processing, Soft Skills such as Listening, Reading, Writing, Time

Management and Presentation Skills, Web Page Designing, Library Automation,

Digital Library, Database Design and Development.

In view of the discussions held in High Power Committee constituted by the

Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, to make the program more intensive, in-depth and

to educate and train the human resources required to serve in cyber age, the

Department intends to introduce Five Year Integrated program leading to MLISc

degree after PUC.

During the next five years the Department intends to seek support from UGC’s

“Departmental Research Scheme (DRS) under SAP Program.

The department also intends to have few outreach programs to create awareness

of LIS courses among undergraduate students, faculty and parents of Hyderabad-

Karnataka region to attract best students of LIS course. Also it plans to establish

linkages with department of other universities Public Libraries, Govt. of Karnataka

with a view to promote public library movement in this region and start few

programs particularly for Gram Panchayat Library Supervisors. Bringing out a

monograph on “Libraries in Hyderabad-Karnataka region, compiling a database of

LIS professions and Libraries in Hyderabad-Karnataka region” are the other

activities the Department intends to take up.

Modern teaching methods are practiced, Department has one OHP and

The strength of faculty is not adequate to cover the existing core papers and

The department has sufficient strength of students for the programs like M.A.,

M.Phil. and Ph.D. Girl students constitute about 45% to 50%. The students

represent all the five districts of the University jurisdiction. Thus, the balance

across the region is maintained.

and the contribution of the faculty to those changes.

The department has been continuously updating the syllabus as per the regulations

of the University. Certain papers of the syllabi were replaced with new areas of the

field keeping in view their relevance. The specialization papers like Counseling

Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Psychopathology and Clinical Assessment which

constitute group of specializations were introduced recently to meet the changing

needs.

4. Trend in the success rate and drop out of students during the last five

years.

The success rate of the students is always more than 95% during the last seven

years. The dropout rate of students is relatively very less because the job

opportunities for the psychology graduates are more. This is evident in the

appointment made by the Government recently. For the position of Lecturers,

Counselors and Psychologists, more than 50% of Gulbarga University graduates

were appointed. Thus, the profession of Psychology is attracting many students in

the recent past.

5. Learning resources of the department like library, computers,

laboratories and other such resources.

The department has recommended the sufficient relevant books to the library

keeping in view the changes made in the syllabus and specialization. The students

would avail the facilities of computers of the department, as well as the computer

center of the University. The department has adequate laboratory equipments and

test materials for smooth conduct of practicals in the laboratory. The department

has OHP, Film projector to be used during lectures and seminars organized

periodically. Students are encouraged to use e-learning material, internet in central

library and central computer centre.

The department has procured the necessary laboratory equipments and test

materials of the laboratory of the department. One OHP, has been added recently

to the department. Internet connectivity helps in accessing e-resources.

7. Modern Teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method.

In addition to the lecture method, the faculty follows group discussion method in which

students actively participate. Innovative methods, like quiz, unannounced quiz, etc., are

used by teachers to make teaching more effective. Remedial teaching is also done for

the needy students.

students.

Counseling is heart of psychology profession. Keeping in view the needs of

students both personal and academic, a Center for Psychological Counseling has

been established in the department to help students in solving their problems.

Counseling is done by the faculty to solve not only academic problems but also

personal problems of the students. The department is contemplating to widen vista

of counseling center to counsel the students of University and also the students’

population of Gulbarga as a whole. This will be achieved when center is sufficiently

strengthened.

during the past five years.

The department has under taken the task of regularization of common psychology

practical in which faculty members of under graduate courses participated, to draw

common procedure for the conduct of practical course. This would help teachers to

maintain uniformity to conduct practicals in the field of psychology.

10. Participation of teachers in academic activities other than teaching and

research.

The teachers of the department are academically very active. They are invited to

chair the sessions at National level conference organized in S.V. University, Tirupati

in the year 2007 and in Manipal University in the year 2006. The teachers were

also involved in the programs organized to eradicate superstitious beliefs

(Witchcraft, Bhanamati) that are prevalent in this backward region. The

department is always ahead in implementing psychological principles in the

community and Lab-to-Land programme. Such outreach programmes are done by

the department periodically.

11. Collaborations with other Departments and Institutions at the National

and International level and their outcome during the past five years.

The faculty members worked as honorary consultants for improving morale of

employees through counseling. It is planned to collaborate with certain NGOs and

Health departments to make psychological counseling more popular and a weapon

for change.

The major research work is carried out on Health, Organizational Behavior, Social

Changes and Modernization, Sports Performance, Self-Help-Groups, Deprivation

and Several current issues of this region. Indeed, research is a significant activity of

the department.

The department had already completed minor research projects funded by

Gulbarga University on very important aspects that have relevance to the present

living of the people of this backward region. It is now planning to under take major

research projects.

research.

The faculty has published eleven papers in Journals, Magazines and Newspapers.

The faculty members have always participated in the extension activities of the

University. They have delivered lectures organized by the Prasaranga and N.S.S.

One of the faculty members has served as co-coordinator of Dr. Ambedkar chair of

the University and is serving as Director for student counselling. The students also

participate in N.S.S. activities.

The students are assessed through Continuous Internal Test, Assignment, Seminar

Presentations and Group Discussion.

department to the student placements.

Majority of psychology students are employed as Lecturers, Counselors, Clinical

Psychologists, Jailors, etc. The Department provides information and guidance

about job opportunities. The department places its students for training during

their course requirements as a result of which students come across with many job

opportunities and ultimately enter the world of work.

19. Significant achievements of the department or faculty or students during

past five years.

The Department is always ahead in serving the community at large and addressing

the students problems in particular. In laboratory-to-land programmes, the

outreach activities involve creation of awareness about current issues, development

of scientific temperament and positive attitudes in the public, removal of false and

traditional beliefs and superstitions etc. The faculty visited the Bhanamati

(witchcraft) affected villages and counseled the victims. The knowledge of mental

disorders is disseminated through Jatas (movement/rally), interfaces and

demonstrations/ exhibitions, since health psychology and organizational behavior

are the major branches taught in this department. The department has taken up

task of assessing the health status of the people of this area and improving the

morale and performance of employees of the industries located in this area.

Youth unrest, depression, suicidal tendency are the areas on which the department

is planning to work, since these are current social issues.

The past students of the department are successfully placed in important positions.

For the position of clinical psychologists recruited recently, more than 50% of the

positions are secured by the psychology students of this department. Similarly, for

the position of lecturers recruited (by KPSC) recently, again 50% of the positions

are bagged by our students. Further, a student has received award for his NSS

activities.

The faculty of the department are actively engaged in research programmes. So

far, the department has produced more than 21 Ph.D. candidates and an equal

number of M. Phil. candidates also. The topic for the research programmes were

more relevant representing the current issues.

21. Plan of action of the University Department for the next five years.

The Department has established a Center for Psychological Counseling.

The activities of the center are limited and therefore it has been planned to

strengthen the center to make it much more effective not only in the campus but

also in the city at large. Through this the students will be benefited in improving

academic motivation, concentration, learning ability, decision making, social and

communication skills, good study habits, healthy inter personal relations,

improvement in examinations etc. The counseling center will also aid the general

population in managing stress, anxiety, fear of failure, frustration, aggression, and

the freedom from the most common undesired habits like smoking, drug and

alcohol dependence.

The department plans to help farmers to combat any negative eventualities and

develop higher self-confidence and avoid suicides. To achieve this, the department

is contemplating for intervention modules and action plans to face such issues and

would send the students for field investigation. The department also adopts certain

villages for this purpose.

Keeping in view, the recent trends in job openings to psychology graduates, the

department proposes to start new job oriented courses, short-term certificate

courses and diploma. These courses would equip the students with adequate

training and in-depth knowledge which would enable them to appreciate and

articulate their career. The department is planning to start a Center for

Development of Personality (C-DOP) for strengthening the positive attributes and

traits of personality in the students. In order to serve the elder and aged persons

who constitute a major chunk of population of India, the department plans to

under take programmes related to health and several aspects of the elderly.

22. Any other highlights.

The department is operating in the propagation of psychological principles to the

people of this backward region. Exhibitions were conducted in main campus of the

University and there was a heavy rush to see psychology exhibition.

The experiments displayed in the exhibition were exciting and capable of capturing

the interest of the public and the public was highly delighted with the exhibition.

The department has participated in the eradication programmes of Bhanamati

(witchcrafts) and delivered lectures and highlighted the essence of scientific

understanding. The department has participated in the health camps organized by

certain agencies in the Gulbarga district. Thus department psychology vibrated the

pulse of the community whenever required.

The students are drawn from across the universities in the State and the

Department has a healthy gender composition with almost the equal number of the

students being women. It has been observed that over the years the number of

female students seeking admission to the course is on rise.

Several significant changes have been incorporated in the course, with revision of

course content based on UGC curriculum report for Social Work. Rural camp for

two weeks in first semester, study tour in second semester, project report in third

Success rate and the increased scope of Social Work has lead to the large number

of admission seekers. The dropout rate is almost nil in the last seven years.

The Department has good learning resources. In addition journals subscribed by

the faculty being made available to the students. Several publishers send

complimentary subscription to the Department, contributing to the enrichment of

learning resources available to the students. The Department has computer facility

with internet connection that greatly enhances the effectiveness of teaching-

learning process. The Department has kept the field work reports, project reports,

block placement reports, camp reports etc. of all the past students for reference by

the successive batches of students, to provide link to the previous research and

lead as well as orient to the future research.

The Department has acquired nearly 5000 books on relevant topics and has

subscribed to various journals.

7. Modern Teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method.

The Department conducts group discussions, seminars, and tutorials for the benefit

of students and arranges field visits to expose the students to ground realities and

to enable them to develop academic and empirical insights into the issues that

would be discussed in the class rooms. The faculty make use of OHP and slide

projectors as teaching aids.

students.

All the students are divided into batches based on their area of interest for field

work. The students are allotted to different faculty members for personal

supervision. The faculty members closely monitor the field work and guide them to

apply the methods of Social Work in the field.

The teachers are deputed to attend workshops/seminars to several universities to

update and upgrade their knowledge and skills of research and recent trends in the field.

The Department has close links with the Departments of Social Work of various

universities in India. Further, the Department has established good rapport with various

NGOs, Govt. Departments such as KSAPS, ICHAP, NIPCCD, National Human Rights

Commissions, Women’s Commission etc.

Organisation (NACO).

• A Refresher Training for VCTC/PPTCT Counsellors has been conducted in

collaboration with National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences

The Department has a unit of National Service Scheme. The Department through

NSS has been involving itself in the extension activities, by taking up projects and

activities aimed at gender empowerment, environment protection and enrichment,

national integration and communal harmony, rural development and rural

reconstruction, creating community assets, watershed management and wasteland

development, functional literacy and adult education. Adoption of villages and

slums are the part of these extension activities.

The Department has continuous internal assessment scheme to evaluate the

students’ progress.

The placement record of students is quite encouraging with several foundations,

trusts, research organizations, government agencies and NGOs dealing with social

department have established many NGOs providing employment to their juniors.

NGOs i.e., Azim Premji Foundation, Bangalore; Naandi Foundation, Hyderabad;

The faculty of the department have been called upon to take up responsibilities of

evaluating, advising and monitoring several on going governmental schemes,

There is a high demand for the course, with large number of students applying for

admission. Further, it is gratifying to note that, more than 50% of the students are

girls. Students come from poor as well as rural and backward backgrounds.

The Department is planning to introduce choice based Credit System. The M.Phil

course is offered with background papers focusing on the issues and problems

concerning the region for which syllabus is prepared every year. Teachers

The success rate has been consistently and constantly high and 95 to 100 percent

and the drop out rate is on the decline with only few students discontinuing the

course in between to join B.Ed. course. The dropout rate is about 5 percent.

There is no departmental library. However, the journals are subscribed by the

Faculty on their own and are made available to the students and research scholars.

There is one computer lab which needs to be renovated and refurnished.

04 computers have been procured in the Department and several books have been
