The 1700 and 1800 Block of Van Ness Ave. consists of residences of several styles. The two early houses date from around 1906. Most of the rest of the block develops between 1913 and 1923. The block has several stylea from this period, the Mediterranean houses, symmetrical, more vertical than the Craftsman homes, tend to dominate the block. Most of the Craftsmnn homes were built after 1912, these homes are of two varieties-the horizontal styles-, and the Swiss Chalet style-vertical in emphasis. A small numbzr of Colonial Revival stractures dot the neighborhood, providing for a good contrast. The neighborhood ie tied together by massing, setbacks and some palms.

SIGNIFICANCE

20. Briefly state historical andlor architectural inlportance linclude dates, events, and persons associaled with the site when known): This neighborhood, south of Franklin is one-of the few streets, along with Canyon and Taft that is still intact. Surrounding areas have been eroded by large apartment structures due to the cities zoning policies. The north end of Van Ness Ave has a good collection of early Hollywood apartment buildings. As a grouping this neighborhood not only has good examples of the variety of styles which predominated during the early years, but is one of the few intact areas which indicate the lifestyle of Hollywood residonts before 1920. The tall palms ,on this street are a strong visual focus qnd create a "Hollywood' atmoebhere to. the street.

SIGNIFICANCE 19. Briefly state historical and/or architectural importance (indude dates. events, and persons associated with the site.)

Noted Church Architect Robert Orr, Hollywood Christian Church,(Wilshire Blvd. Chirstian, 9th Church of Christ Scientist) designed the religious structure for the Fdrst Methodist Church, South, of Hollywood in 1923. The congregation was a well-established and influential one, and could afford the $75,000 building. The Hollywood comrpunity had particularly strong religious commitments during the -early decades of the century. Religious institutions of all denominations played .a large role in the social and cultural events in the community. Within 'the last decade the changing population of Hollywood forced th; closure of the Methodist church. The Armenian Orthodox diocese purchased the structure and the building continues to serve the religious needs of the Hollywood community.

SIGNIFICANCE 19. Briefly state historical andlor architectural importance (include dates. events. and persons associated with fhe site.)

Architect Claude Beelman (MGM Administration Bldg., Eastern Bldg., Hollyvood b i n Post office) designed the building in 1947 as the Mutual-Don Lee Broadcasting Studio. Automobile dealer Don Lee bought radio station WU in 1927, and became a CBS affiliate. In 1936. the station joined the mutual network. As early as 1931. Lee was dabbling in television. Beelman, vho had designed large spaces for the entertainment media before, created the building as production facilities for Lee's varied interests.

The buildingpermi.~:deS~ribeS the purpose of the building as a market, although the design seems unusual. It was built for owner Jess Willard of Glendale by Arthur Rouda in 1930. The late twenties had seen a decided effort by developers with interest near Hollywood and Vine to connect Vine to Rossmore and thus to Wilshire Blvd.. The resulting increase in traffic from Los Angeles made the southern part of vine comercially profitable, and several imposing structures were built in the corridor during the Thirties. 4 visual landmark on Vine St. this bvilding is one of only a few a t Deco buildings on Vine St.

%e Huntington-Hartford Theater is .a simple, unadorned box-lj.;te .structure, almost devoid of exterior ornamentation. The massing of the facade is broken by a 'simple marquee spanning the length of the building. A band of three windows in the center of the facade gives an illusion of 'verticality,, although the overall structure is of a more horizontal, emphasis. The building has been extensively altered, beginning in 1954, at which time the simple classical detailing of the facade was removed.

IGNIFICANCE ' 20. Briefly srate historical andlor architectural importance (includedates, events, and persons associated with the site when known):

Hollywood supported four legitimate theaters in the Twenties; of the four, the Huntington-Hartford (then knonn as the Vine Street Theater) is tine only one still engaged in live theater. Designed by noted California architect Myron Hunt, whose contributions to this region's architecture.include the Wattles estate in Hollywood and many prestigious residences in Pasadena, the building has been a contributing contributor to the artistic and cultural life of the community. The property, originally owned by the Stern family, was leased by Frank Strong, Elwood Reggs, and Walter Wheat, who commissioned tte building. Opened in 1926 as Wilkes Vine Street Theater, it was noted in the reviews of the day for its simple, yet dramatic interior by Dickson Korgan and its advanced technica1,equiprnent. In 1931, the Vine Street Theater ceased legitimate production and became the 6irror movie theater. Later it .was used as a television and radio facility until 2954, when it was reclaimed as a legitimate theater.

20. Brief ly state historical andlor architectyral importance (include dates, events, and persons associated w i t h the site when known): An unusual structure in the Art Deco style, this edifice stnnds out for its

delicate grillwork and above al.1 its c~~rved corner. Designed by X.L. :>o,yerty in 1930, it is oqp of the several structures conceptionalized by this local architect for the Hollywood area. Gogerty in alliance with Carl Jules Yeyl, designed such Hollywood buildings as the Uaine Building and the :iollywood Ibyhouse. Gogerty later desiped the Vine/Yucca Tower. This structure is unusual for its curved corner which appears to be a sensitive res:?onse to the shape of the lot rather than a precursor to Moderne stream- lining. This edifice is :especially of interest because i f . L. Goqerty's Vine/Yucca Tower and his Hollywood Palace are located on the same block. This trio depicts the changes of style in the architect's development.
