Yo no he bebido nunca en otro vasoAsí pequeño.
Ancestral BurdenOnce you told me my father never wept; Once you told me his father never wept; The men of my line have never wept; They were made of steel.
As you were saying this you cried a tearThat dropped into my mouth…I have neverdrunk more of poison than I didfrom that little cup.
Vulnerable woman, poor and comprehending woman,
When I tasted it I knew the pain of centuries.Oh, my soul cannot endureAll of its burden.
(Translation: Andrew Rosing)
Y si fuera tamboritoCurrucutearía bajito, bajito, pero bien bajito,pa que bailaras pa mí.
Pa mí, mi negra, pa mí,Pa mí, na má que pa mí
Close to MeLittlefleeceofmyflesh, that I wove in my womb, littleshiveringfleece, sleep close to me!
The partridge sleeps in the cloverhearing its heart beat.My breathing will not wake you.Sleep close to me!
Little trembling blade of grassastonished to be alive, don’t leave my breast.Sleep close to me!
I who have lost everythingam now afraid to sleep.Don’t slip away from my arms. Sleep close to me!
(Translation: Doris Dana)
Here’s to LifeThanks to life that has given me so muchIt has given me two eyes, when I open themI can tell black and white clearly apartThe star-covered depth of the lofty skyThe man I love among all the crowd.
Thanks to life that has given me so muchIt has given me sound and the alphabet. And with it the words I think and speakMother, friend, brother, and light that brightens the way of the soul of the one I love.
Thanks to life that has given me so muchIt has given me hearing that in all its breadthNight and day records crickets and canariesHammers, turbines, barking, squallsAnd the soft voice of my beloved.
Thanks to life that has given me so muchIt has given me the step of my tired feetWith them I walked around cities and puddlesBeaches and deserts, mountains and plainsAnd your house, your street, and your courtyard.
Thanks to life that has given me so muchIt has given me laughter and it has given me tearsSo I can tell happiness from griefThe two things my song is made ofAnd the song of you all that is my own song.
Thanks to life that has given me so much!
(Translation: Joan Baez and John Upton)

TRANSLATIONS
I stood in darkened daydreamsI stood in darkened daydreamsand stared at her portrait longas that beloved face wassecretly coming to life.
Around her lips there blossomeda wondrous laughing smile, and melancholy teardrops -they glittered in her fair eyes.
Likewise my teardrops welled upandfloweddownmournfulcheeksalas, I can’t believe it,that I am deprived of you!
They once loved each otherThey once loved each other, but neither would to the other confess;they saw each other as hostile, yet wanted to perish from love.
Theyfinallypartedand sometimes sighted the other in
dreams;they had been dead so long nowand hardly known it themselves.
Love’s magicNow Love once like a nightingalein rosebush perched and sang;withsweetestwonderflewthesoundalong the woodland green.
And as it rang, there rose a scentfrom ring of thousand buds,and all the treetops rustled soft,and softer blew the air;
the brooklets silenced, scarcely comeby splashing from the heights, the fawns stood still as if in dreamand listened to the tone.
Andbrightandeverbrighterflowedthe sunbeams down inside,’round blossoms, wood and gorge it
gushedwith golden red sunshine.
I walked along the path that dayand also heard that sound.Alas! what ever since I’ve sungwas just its echo faint.
TRANSLATIONS (continued)
The moon so peaceful risesThe moon so peaceful riseswith all its golden shine, there sleeps in lovely glitterthe weary earth below.
And on the breezes waft downfrom many faithful heartstrue loving thoughts by the thousandupon the sleeping ones.
And down in the valley, there twinklethe lights from my lover’s house;but I in darkness still look out -silent - into the world.
I once into your eyes lookedI once into your eyes looked, theflashofunfadingloveIbeheldthere,I once upon your cheeks sawthe bloom of roses from heaven fair.
Andthoughtheflashofeyemayfadeand though the roses may wither, their splendor ever new refreshed,is how my heart will remember.
and never will I behold your checksand in your eyes ne’er be gazing, without those roses that I saw bloomandwiththatflashbeblazing.
The quiet lotus blossomThe quiet lotus blossomsprouts from the pond so blue, its leaves all glimmer and sparkle, its bud is white as snow.
The moon pours down from heavenall of its golden shine, pours all its golden moonbeamsinto her blossom heart.
In water ’round the blossomcircles the whitest swanit sings so sweet, so softlyand gazes on the bloom.
It sings so sweet, so softlyand would but perish in song.O blossom, whitest blossom, can you conceive the song?

About the UE Choral ProgramThe choral program at UE is one of the most distinctive choral programs in the state of Indiana. The UE University Choir has received multiple invitations to perform for the Indiana Music Education Association annual conventions and for the regional American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conference in Chicago. In 2017, University of Evansville was the only college/university in Indiana chosen to partici-pate in the National ACDA Collegiate Honor Choir held at the ACDA National Confer-ence in Minneapolis, MN. Over the years, the choral program has worked with such internationally recognized artists as The King’s Singers, Anonymous 4, and, upcom-ing in 2020, Bobby McFerrin. The University Choir’s 2019 recording of world-renowned composer Dominick DiOrio’s You Do Not Walk Alone can be heard on the composer’s website as the model performance of his work.
The choral program at UE is made up of four choirs including the University Choir, the UE Choral Society, and the UE Women’s Chorus. During certain semesters, a select number of students are drawn from the choral program to form the small chamber ensemble Kantorei. The choral program’s most recently formed ensemble, the UE Choral Society is open to both UE students as well as area community members. In addition to regular concerts, UE choirs can be heard at annual campus events including Candlelight Vespers, Founders Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement.
All students are welcome into the UE choral program, regardless of major. Students interested in joining the choral program as well as community members interested in joining the UE Choral Society are welcome to contact Director of Choral Activities, Dennis Malfatti at [email protected].

SERIES
Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture SeriesMade possible through an endowment from the late Patricia H. Snyder, trustee and longtime friend of the University of Evansville, the Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series was created in 1997 to bring speakers or performers of national or international renown to Evansville at no cost to the public. The concerts and lectures in this series span a wide range of topics, and are aimed at both the Evansville and campus communities.
Department of MusicThe University of Evansville’s Department of Music is a community of students and artist-teachers working together to achieve artistic excellence and professional results. Five music degrees and a comprehensive curriculum, combined with an emphasis on active learning, give our students extensive experience in the chosen field of study. Faculty mentors nurture each student’s creativity, develop their talents, and guide them to professional success. Our commit-ment to a strong tradition of performing excellence and outstand-ing musicianship is evidenced by the more than 90 concerts presented each year by music majors, music students majoring in other disciplines, faculty, and guest artists.

Circle Singing with Bobby McFerrin, Gimme5, and Members of the UE Choral Program
For decades Bobby McFerrin has broken all the rules. The 10-time Grammy winner has blurred the distinction between pop music and fine art, goofing around bare-foot in the world’s finest concert halls, exploring uncharted vocal territory, inspiring a whole new generation of a cappella singers and the beatbox movement. His latest album, spirityouall, is a
bluesy, feel-good recording, an unexpected move from the music-industry rebel who singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philhar-monic, his improvising choir Voicestra, and his legendary solo vocal performances.
It’s been the quietest and most polite of revolutions. Bobby McFer-rin was always an unlikely pop star. He created a lasting ear-worm of a #1 hit early in his career. Then he calmly went back to pursuing his own iconoclastic musical journey, improvising on national tele-vision, singing melodies without words, spontaneously inventing parts for 60,000 choral singers in a stadium in Germany, ignoring boundaries of genre, defying all expectations.
Bobby’s history as an instrumentalist and bandleader is key to understanding his innovative approach to mapping harmony and rhythm (as well as melody) with his voice. “I can’t sing everything at once,” he says, “but I can hint at it so the audience hears even what I don’t sing.” All that pioneer spirit and virtuosity has opened up a great big sky full of new options for singers; so have Bobby’s exper-iments in multi-tracking his voice (Don’t Worry, Be Happy has seven separate, over-dubbed vocal tracks; Bobby’s choral album VOCAb-uLarieS [with Roger Treece] has thousands). But virtuosity isn’t the point. “I try not to ‘perform’ onstage,” says Bobby. “I try to sing the way I sing in my kitchen, because I just can’t help myself. I want audiences to leave the theatre and sing in their own kitchens the next morning. I want to bring audiences into the incredible feeling of joy and freedom I get when I sing.”

Mezzo-soprano Lori Bade, Nell S. and Boyd H. McMullan Distinguished Professor of Music and associate dean for graduate studies in the College of Music and Dramatic Arts began teaching at the LSU School of Music in 1993. In 2007, Bade received the LSU Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award for outstanding teaching and research and/or service. In addition, she has twice received the “Tiger Excellence in Teaching Award” by Louisiana State University. As a performing artist, Lori Bade brings a history of great successes from throughout the South, Southwest, Washington state and Europe. She has achieved critical
acclaim for her “fine voice, well produced with even tone and vibrato…” as well as “pure vocal beauty, who has a resplendent, coppery instrument whose ripe ‘Earth Mother’ low register has no hint of growly chest tones.” Lori Bade has performed leading roles with numerous opera companies and, as mezzo soprano soloist, sung major concert works of J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Duruflé, Handel, Haydn, Mahler, Mozart, Rutter, Tippett and Vaughan Williams.
Bade’s voice students have won at the District, Regional, and National Metropolitan Opera competitions; at the National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions (stateandregionallevels);haveheldprofessionalsingingengagementsand/orbeenplaced in multiple apprentice programs including but not limited to the Merola Program with San Francisco Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Utah Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, Minnesota Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Glimmerglass. Dr. Bade holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance from The University of Texas at Austin, the Master of Arts in Vocal Pedagogy from The Ohio State University, and the Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Church Music from Texas Lutheran University.
TarantelleIn the heavens the moon rises and shines. It turns midnight into the light of day.“Come with me,” she said to me,“Come onto the sizzling sandWhere, wriggling, jumps and slidesThe tarantella...”
Come on, dancers! Here are two of them;A crowd on the water, a crowd around them; The man is well-built, the girl is beautiful; But watch out! Without thinking about it,It is the game of love being danced,The tarantella...
Sweet is the sound of the tambourine!“If I were the daughter of the seaAndyouafisher,”shesaidtome,“Every night with gleeWe would love each other while we danceThe tarantella...”

Puisqu’ici bas toute âmeAs each soul here belowSomeone has lent,Its music or its glowOr its own scent; As all things here belowTo true love giveA thorn, or else a rose,As they do live;As April gives the oaksA charming sound;Night pain in kind sleep soaks,Our cares to drown. As when dark waves reach landTo take their rest,They leave upon the strandA sweet caress;I give thee, at this hour,Bent over thee,The best that’s in my power,The best in me!I give my thoughts so true,Though sad they be,Like glistening drops of dewThey fall on thee.My vows uncounted claimMy love, always.ReceivetheshadeorflameOf all my days.My wildest transports greet,Suspicions gone,And each caress so sweetOf this my song.My spirit which, afar,Drifts on the sea,Its only gliding starThe sight of thee.Take, heavenly creature,O, my beauty,My heart - its only featureMy love for thee.
The maiden speaks, the maiden says:“Our love will not be sundered!Steel is strong, and iron is very strong; Our love is even stronger.Iron and steel can be reforged,But our love - who could alter it?Iron and steel can be melted down,But our love will exist forever!”
ViolonLoving couple of misapprehended soundsViolin and player please me.Ah! I love these long wailingsStretched on the string of disquiet. To the sound of strung-up chordsAt the hour when Justice is silentThe heart shaped like a strawberryGives itself to love like an unknown fruit.
FleursPromisedflowers, flowersheldinyourarms,Flowers from a step’s parentheses,WhobroughtyoutheseflowersinwinterSprinkled with the sea’s sand?Sandofyourkisses, flowersoffadedlovesYour lovely eyes are ashes and in the hearthA moan-beribboned heartBurns with its sacred images.
Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amourBeautiful night, oh night of love, Rouse to our drunkenness, Night softer than the day, O beautiful night of love! Timefleesanddoesnotreturn Takes away our tenderness! Far from this happy place, Timefleeswithoutreturning! Burning Zephyrs, Pour out your caresses; Burning Zephyrs Give us your kisses. O beautiful night of love!
Immer leiser wird mein SchlummerMy slumber grows ever more peaceful;and only like a thin veil now does my anxietylie trembling upon me.Often in my dreams I hear youcalling outside my door;no one is awake to let you in,and I wake up and weep bitterly.
Yes, I will have to die;another will you kiss, when I am pale and cold. Before the May breezes blow, before the thrush sings in the forest:if you wish to see me once more, come, o come soon!
Meine Liebe ist grünMy love’s as green as the lilac bush,And my sweetheart’s as fair as the sun;The sun shines down on the lilac bush,Fills it with delight and fragrance. My soul has a nightingale’s wingsAnd sways in the blossoming lilac,And, drunk with fragrance, exults and singsMany a love-drunk song.
Von ewiger LiebeDark, howdarkinwoodandfield!Evening has already fallen, and now the world is silent.Nowhere is there light and nowhere is there smoke,Yes, and even the lark is now silent as well.Out of the village there comes a young lad,Taking his sweetheart home,He leads her past the willow bushes,Talking so much and about so many things:“If you suffer disgrace and feel dejected,If others shame you about me, Then let our love be sundered as swiftly,As quickly as we were united before. It will go with the rain, it will go with the wind,As quickly as we were united before.”

Auf dem Hügel sitz ich spähend I sit on the hill, gazingInto the misty blue countryside,Towards the distant meadowsWhere, mylove,Ifirstfoundyou. Now I’m far away from you,Mountain and valley interveneBetween us and our peace,Our happiness and our pain.Ah,youcannotseethefierygazeThat wings its way towards you,And my sighs are lostIn the space that comes between us.Will nothing ever reach you again? Will nothing be love’s messenger?I shall sing, sing songsThat speak to you of my distress!ForsoundsofsingingputtoflightAll space and all time; And a loving heart is reachedBy what a loving heart has hallowed!
II. Wo die Berge so blauWhere the blue mountainsFrom the misty greyLook out towards me,Where the sun’s glow fades,Where the clouds scud by –There would I be!There, in the peaceful valley,Pain and torment cease.Where among the rocksThe primrose meditates in silence,And the wind blows so softly –There would I be!I am driven to the musing woodBy the power of love,Inner pain.Ah, nothing could tempt me from here,If I were able, my love,To be with you eternally!
III. Leichte Segler in den HöhenLight clouds sailing on high,And you, narrow little brook,If you catch sight of my love,Greet her a thousand times. If, clouds, you see her walkingThoughtful in the silent valley,Let my image loom before herIn the airy vaults of heaven. If she be standing by the bushesAutumn has turned fallow and bare,Pour out to her my fate,Pour out, you birds, my torment.Soft west winds, waft my sighsTo her my heart has chosen –Sighs that fade awayLike the sun’s last ray.Whisper to her my entreaties,Let her, narrow little brook,Truly see in your ripplesMy never-ending tears!
IV. Diese Wolken in den HöhenThese clouds on high,ThischeerfulflightofbirdsWill see you, O gracious one.Take me lightly winging too! These west winds will playfullyBlow about your cheeks and breast,Willruffleyoursilkentresses.–Would I might share that joy! This brooklet hastens eagerlyTo you from those hills.Ifshe’sreflectedinyou,Flows directly back to me!
TRANSLATIONS (continued)
V. Es kehret der Maien, es blühet die AuMay returns,The meadow blooms. The breezes blowSo gentle, so mild,Thebabblingbrooksflowagain,The swallow returnsTo its rooftop home,And eagerly buildsHer bridal chamber,Where love shall dwell. She busily bringsFrom every directionMany soft scrapsFor the bridal bed,Many warm scraps for her young. Now the pair livesFaithfully together,What winter parted,May has joined,For May can unite all who love.May returns,The meadow blooms. The breezes blowSo gentle, so mild;I alone cannot move on.When spring unitesAll lovers,Our love aloneKnows no spring,And tears are its only gain.
VI. Nimm sie hin den, diese LiederAccept, then, these songsI sang for you, beloved;Sing them again at eveningTo the lute’s sweet sound! As the red light of evening drawsTowards the calm blue lake,And its last rays fadeBehind those mountain heights; And you sing what I sangFrom a full heartWith no display of art,Aware only of longing:Then, at these songs,The distance that parted us shall recede,And a loving heart be reachedBy what a loving heart has hallowed!

Rachel Barton PineA leading interpreter of the great classical masterworks, violinist Rachel Barton Pine thrills audiences with her dazzling technique, lustrous tone, and emotional honesty. With an infectious joy in music-making and a passion for connecting historical research to performance, Pine transforms audiences’ experiences of classical music.
Pine’s2019-20seasonincludesaresidencywiththeSinga-pore Symphony, as well as performances with the Royal Scottish National and Seattle Baroque Orchestras, and
the Tel Aviv Soloists. In recital she will appear at Lincoln Center with Matthew Hagle, and Pine and harpsichordist Jory Vinikour will perform in concerts presented by theNationalGalleryinWashingtonD.C.andtheSanFranciscoEarlyMusicSociety.

Pine’s past chart-topping albums include Mozart: Complete Violin Concerto, Sinfonia Concertante with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner con-ducting; Bel Canto Paganini, and Elgar & Bruch Violin Concertos with the BBC Sym-phony, Andrew Litton conducting.
Pine has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s most prestigious ensembles, including the Chicago and Vienna Symphonies, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Phil-harmonic, and Camerata Salzburg.
Galvanized by the fact that young people learning classical music seldom have the opportunitytostudyandperformmusicwrittenbyBlackcomposers,in2018Pine’sRBP Foundation released Music by Black Composers (MBC) Violin Volume I,thefirstin a series of pedagogical books of music exclusively by global Black classical com-posers, as well the MBC Coloring Book of Black Composers.

TEXTSbyWaltWhitman(1819-1892)
By the Bivouac's Fitful FlameBythebivouac'sfitfulflame,
Aprocessionwindingaroundme,solemnandsweetandslow-butfirstInote,Thetentsofthesleepingarmy,thefields'andwoods'dimoutline,
Thedarknesslitbyspotsofkindledfire,thesilence,Likeaphantomfarornearanoccasionalfiguremoving,
Theshrubsandtrees,(asIliftmyeyestheyseemtobestealthilywatchingme,)While wind in procession thoughts, O tender and wondrous thoughts,
Of life and death, of home and the past and loved, and of those that are far away;A solemn and slow procession there as I sit on the ground,
Bythebivouac'sfitfulflame.
Beat! Beat! Drums! Beat! beat! drums! - blow! bugles! blow!
Through the windows - through doors - burst like a ruthless force,Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation,
Into the school where the scholar is studying;Leave not the bridegroom quiet - no happiness must he have now with his bride,
Northepeacefulfarmeranypeace,ploughinghisfieldorgatheringhisgrain,Sofierceyouwhirrandpound,youdrums-soshrillyoubuglesblow.
Beat! beat! drums! - blow! bugles! blow!Overthetrafficofcities-overtherumbleofwheelsinthestreets;
Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? No sleepers must sleep in those beds --
No bargainers bargains by day - no brokers or speculators - would they continue?Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing?
Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the judge? Then rattle quicker, heavier drums -- you bugles wilder blow.
Beat! beat! drums! - blow! bugles! blow!Make no parley - stop for no expostulation,
Mind not the timid - mind not the weeper or prayer,Mind not the old man beseeching the young man,
Let not the child's voice be heard, nor the mother's entreaties,Make even the trestles to shake the dead where they lie awaiting the hearses,
So strong you thump O terrible drums - so loud you bugles blow.
Look Down, Fair Moon Look down, fair moon and bathe this scene,
Poursoftlydownnight'snimbusfloods, onfacesghastly, swollen, purple; On the dead, on their backs, with their arms toss'd wide,
Pour down your unstinted nimbus, sacred moon.
ReconciliationWord over all, beautiful as the sky!
Beautiful that war, and all its deeds of carnage, must in time be utterly lost;
That the hands of the sisters Death and Night, incessantly softly wash again, and ever again, this soil'd world:
For my enemy is dead -- a man divine as myself is dead;Ilookwherehelies,white-facedandstill,inthecoffin--Idrawnear;
Ibenddown,andtouchlightlywithmylipsthewhitefaceinthecoffin
